Yak and Yeti Gurkha Restaurant in York

Lovely Nepaless food, I love my traditional food and the foods are to die for. I took two of my friends who never tried Nepaless food before, I recommended some chilli momos, chilli chips, rice and vegetables curry, chicken curry and my veggie friend had fish curry for her main. They all loved it especially momos! Would definitely recommend ❤️

Went as a family to experience the cuisine of Nepal. This is the real deal and is the best Nepali food in the North of England. Definitely recommend. The momo are the highlight of the menu. Portions are smaller than you’d get in an average restaurant but is more than made up for in quality. You get what you pay for which is authentic quality food. 10/10

We visited having read the good reviews, but left quite disappointed. Portion sizes were really small, and overall, we felt that the prices were high for what we had and didn't represent good value for money. The quality of ingredients was good, however with main dishes alone between £13 and £15 we expected much more food on our plates.

My husband has been to Nepal and loved the cuisine, so we wanted to go somewhere authentic. This Nepalese 🇳🇵 family run venue is authentic, the food is delicious (we had the daal) and the staff were lovely. Will return when we next visit York.

I have visited this restaurant before, this is my fourth time and again the food was exceptional. I was with a friend who had never tried Nepalese food before, he couldn't get over how the food tasted. He and I loved the chilli Mo Mo' s . The chicken meals we had were also lovely. Thankyou to the staff who were very professional and very welcoming. I obviously will visit again. I actually live 50 miles away and can't wait to go again. Thankyou R Emerson.

I really enjoyed my first visit to the Yak and Yeti. It was surprisingly quiet for a Friday evening with less than half the tables occupied, it was nice to have something similar but distinctly different to the usual "Indian". It was approximately £55 for 2 starters, 2 mains and beer. Really friendly staff and prompt service, we thought it could do with a bit of background music but overall a great place. I suspect the small doorway makes it a little hidden from those walking past.

Our company were carrying out some work in the restaurant during the day. I was approached by the chef who asked if I had ever tried Nepalese food. I replied “no, however I’d love to..” The polite chef said ok let me make u something.. After 15 mins or so he came out of the kitchen with 2 plates. Myself & one of our apprentices (Callum) sat at a table and he presented us with a starter to try. We had the Steamed Mo:Mo, which was absolutely fantastic. The chef was not only a lovely chatty guy but to offer us something to eat / try whilst working onsite was a kind offer. Thankyou very much for treating us. We had a great meal here. The curry was one of the best I’ve had. The main portions are on the small side, but with a starter you won’t leave hungry. If we visit York again, we’ll definitely visit again.

This place feels like home to me. The people that run it are warm, welcoming and offer yummy, home cooked meals that remind me of my mum’s dishes. And they’re reasonably priced. (A box of egg fried rice costs 3.75£). I’d recommend it to anyone from India/Nepal feeling homesick and looking for a casual dining experience.

I can not accurately describe the meals I just consumed. However divinity on a plate is a good start, I have never had a reaction to food more than the food I have had today. It has definitely caused me to happy dance while eating my food.

This is the first time I have ever eaten Gurkha food and its is totally different to any other national cuisine I’ve ever eaten, it was absolutely delicious loads of different flavours and plenty of meat within their dishes… Had a bottle of Gurkha beer also which was standalone also! The staff in this place are so friendly and tentative nothing is too much trouble. I would highly recommend booking before going as this restaurant was packed, plenty of room I’m not complaining at all. Will definitely be visiting again the next time we are in York…

This restaurant is amazing! The quality of the food is fantastic and it's so flavoursome. I've had the platter of dishes for £17.99 many times and it is delicious and filling. The service is great too - highly recommend this place!

I wanted to write another review for Yak and Yeti, having eaten there many times by now. It's still my favourite restaurant in York, but now I know where complaints about portion size were coming from. On one occasion I ordered a main dish and even with the sides and starter left feeling hungry, which was really confusing. However, their thali-like set meals are large in size and a feast both for the senses and the eyes. So unfortunately, depending on what you order you can leave with very different experiences. The noodle soups (which contain a full-sized portion of momo dumplings, I think) are also well-sized and otherwise delicious. Finally, I'd like to put in a good word for their homemade lemonade and lassi, both of which I love.

Authentic beautiful flavours.... Great location amazing choices

Food was top notch - so tasty and packed full of flavour. The buffalo was amazing - I’d also recommend the crushed rice (it’s not how it sounds but adds great texture). As some of the other reviews have mentioned the portions are a little small but provided you have a starter and main you won’t walk away hungry. The desserts look great too although I didn’t have one. The Gurkha beer is lovely - goes really well with any of the spicy dishes and great size bottle (660ml) The front of house staff are all lovely and very accommodating - the atmosphere is also really nice, can get a little loud due to the small size of venue. All in all one of my favourite places to eat in York.

Went without reservation and whilst small , busy restaurant got a table. Staff were great and explained ingredients in dishes and food better than described as tastes were superb. Couldn’t recommend enough

Visited Yak and Yeti recently and can not fault any aspect of the dining experience. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, great service and the food was delicious, especially the Everest Lamb (curry) that has a fusion of flavours that has to be tried to be believed! Keep up the great work - highly recommended!!!

Overhyped! Ridiculously small portions, they were more like starters rather than mains. Spent £60 and left the place HUNGRY. Felt scammed. No value for money!! Wouldn't recommend and I won't be coming back! Service was below average. Some people came after us but received food faster.

Authentic Nepalese food. Lovely decor.

The ribs we're poor quality, very fatty & chewy. Lamb curry was tasty but way overpriced for the amount. A lot of restaurants/food establishments are doing this now their prices are going up & portions are going down. It's very cheeky & annoying. If I pay £25 for a meal I expect to be full, a young child could of easily eaten it

Very nice food, friendly Staff Gr8 treat

Menu was a bit limited compared with other similar restaurants. Had Ghurkali Pork which was pleasant but lacking in definition. I think the other dishes were similar. Chilli mo mo were tasty. Service was good, as expected. If you want a variety of dishes there are better options but this place is very popular.

I really like the environmental settings in Gurkha Restaurant. It’s like an old traditional place where we get the unite with our friends and enjoy the delicious meals. I highly recommend to those who wishes to explore the old Asia Nepal and Bhutan culture to visit there.

Food was perfect. One of the best curries I’ve had in years. Staff were fine, we were served quickly and our orders were mostly correct. Unfortunately, the middle table in the room was incredibly noisy. Our table of five literally couldn’t talk to each other. My advice, ring and ask, and avoid large parties - there’s only one room so no getting away from it.

I had never tried Nepalese food before but it is my new favourite! The buffalo mo:mo & daal bhat masu were delicious. My son had vegetable pakoras & beef stir fry and he was equally impressed! It was very filling too…we didn’t have room for desserts, even though they looked very tempting! The staff were friendly and helpful, and the food presentation and decor was so good that it made us feel like we were in Nepal! We will definitely come again if we get the chance!

My first visit to a Gurkha restaurant and I wasn’t disappointed. The food was delicious as was the service. My two friends and I shared a starter of pork steamed MoMo and Kukhura Ko Pakhetta. For main we all ate Daal Bhat Masu with Lamb that melted in your mouth. I washed it down with a refreshing bottle of Gurkha beer.

We were in York for our wedding anniversary, I'm a trekker and Nepal is my dream place to visit but, alas present circumstance dictates I can't, I'd seen this place on previous visits mad promised to try it. Very friendly and pleasant ambience, the food was very good. We both went for the platter Daal Bhat Musa, I had mine with lamb curry which was superb. Very light compared to the richness of Kashmir curries I usually eat, very tasty. My wife had coconut ice-cream and I went for the Mustang Coffee, a small warm coffee made with honey, brandy and toasted rice, lovely winter warmer that coats the ribs. Very understated and relaxed place with lovely food

Such a pity that this little gem was almost empty Saturday lunchtime whilst there was a queue on the pavement at a bland chain restaurant down the street. The dumplings were excellent and the mains were very good, really well spiced, tasty and different from the normal Banglish fare. Service was friendly and efficient. Prices were reasonable and certainly competitive to anything on the high street.

Why go to the Yak and Yeti? 1. The food is excellent! It has the spicy flavour you would expect from Indian food, but it's light on the stomach. 2. The service is excellent with the natural politeness and kindness of the Nepalese. 3. The owner is a veteran of the British Army's Gurkha regiment. He came thousands of miles from his home to serve our country. Now he is sharing the best of his culture with us. His family are excellent ambassadors for the Nepalese culture cooking for and serving diners with politeness and friendliness.

Staff are lovely, friendly and helpful. Never had Nepalese food before and, to be fair, probably won't again. I had two starters which were OK without being special. The beer was good, though!

The first time in a while I’d had Nepalese (the first time for my better half). Delicious- I could have eaten it again. Take your time and savour every mouthful. I highly recommend this, and we will definitely be back.

Love the place, host were amazing and the food was really good, with value for money. Good quantity. Loved the ambiance too. We were served by Dibsan really sweet person and amazing server. Food was authentic Nepali dishes, not like fake taste at all. Really enjoyed. Definitely should visit.

Delicious food and a great variation of dishes for all diets. Service was excellent, and the restaurant itself was very nice. I would definitely recommend Yak and Yeti, and the homemade lemonade!

If you see that doorway, go through it and up the stairs, order as many different things with your company as you can, try a bit of everything and thank me later. The food was fantastic, flavours galore, cooked perfectly and the mains were very warming, couldn't fault the food or service at all, loved every bit. A true hidden gem.

Wonderful little gem in York. This was our first visit here But not my first meal with a Gurkha (Field Kitchen) before. As always I ordered far too much LOL but loved every mouthful. The service is wonderful and would recommend booking ahead. Please do NOT be put off by the small street level entrance door This is a Frist floor eatery.

An authentic Nepalese restaurant with excellent food, many varieties suitable for those who love spicy and those who not, nicely decorated environment and very nice staff. The owner is an Nepalese whose hospitality is very warm and cares for customers’ needs. Must try Mo:Mo (dumplings) in soup, curry and Yak & Yeti beef. Reasonable priced. Value for money. It’s on the first floor which may be easily missed in passing

Different, in a good way. A lot of things I have never seen before. Starters were grea. Good drinks and service to match. .

A wonderful little gem in the center of York. After our starters (steamed dumplings and papadum with chutney) we shared two main dishes: Ghurkhali Pork (£12,99) which is a curry, and Dharane Sungur Ko Masu ($13,99) which is dry cooked pork belly with spinach. Both dishes were served with rice and absolutely fantastic. We had coconut icecream and the chocolate fudge cake for our desserts and the latter was a hit (and quite a big piece may I add). I would come back for this chocolate cake had it not been the main dishes and simple yet colorful and friendly atmosphere that already convinced me. The price quality of the food is excellent too; if we visit York again this is the place where we’ll go for dinner!

One of the best meals we have ever eaten anywhere. One of us is vegan and the choice of vegan food was unbelievable. We started with some vegetable steamed Mo:Mos and some chilli Mo:Mos. Both vegan and totally delicious. Mains were Special Chow main and...

It's a shame because the reviews are very good and maybe we caught them on a bad day. The people who were front of house just didn't seem very happy which isn't a good start. The food came out quite quickly and the sauce for both dishes was very hot and tasty but the chicken didn't taste freshly cooked hence the speed. Its a shame because the food looked lovely.

The small entrance is not, at first sight, inviting but the upstairs dining room has an excellent ambience. The menue is limited but the food is delicious. Friendly staff.

We love Asian food but have never tried Nepalese before. There is lots of choice on the menu and every diet is catered for. The food was delicious with lots of flavour and well presented. The portion sizes were perfect for us.

Food was dreadful! We went there once and will not recommend it to anyone! Also it is considerably overpriced compared to other Nepalese restaurants. The man (owner) was a lovely man and he was very polite. His wife thought was not happy when we politely returned a meal due to being inedible… We got another meal instead of it, which you could tell was made out of the cheapest ingredients, the momos being stuffed with only what it tasted like semi-cooked onion. She was not very polite in the end when we were going and asked if we had paid, which made us think maybe other unhappy customers haven’t been paying. Later we came to know from local people that Yak and Yeti is the worst Nepalese restaurant in York (and if you ask us, in the world!)

Popped in because we fancied something different and we weren't disappointed. The restaurant is run by an army veteran and his son. The food was delicious and the red wine was on a par with what I would get at home in France. I was given a discount as an RAF veteran that I did not ask for which was very kind. We shall eat here again, if not this week, then on future visits to York.

Great atmosphere! We came in a big group and found seats easy. Never had Nepalese food, felt like it’s similar to Indian food. Highly recommend the meal seat Daal Baht Masu with black daal and lamb curry. Black daal compared to yellow daal has more earthy flavour. Chiya tea smell similar to chai tea, but has more depth to it, I prefer chiya over chai.
