Disappointing lunch treat with my daughter :( definitely not to the standard I was expecting and I left a large proportion on the plate. Chips were not homemade as advertised and the chicken burger was placed directly onto bun before resting so base of bun was steamed soggy. Food arrived surprisingly quickly which made me think it was precooked then microwaved. All in all a very stodgy unappetising meal.

We were on holiday nearby and ate in the Talbot on our last night. We had our dog with us and were shown to a room where we remained the only diners. When we asked for a local beer the staff member who we saw on reception was very knowledgeable, asked us what type of beer we liked and came back with samples for us to try. A young waitress took our order, we opted for the lamb and the duck main course and we both enjoyed our meal. We also had desserts and again they were good. The service was attentive but not overly so and all in all it was a good experience.

Overall slightly disappointed as it was clear that a few of the staff were new and had a lot to learn. I think it was Tracey who was trying to keep it all together , she was amazing. I had the sirloin of beef which was so so good ,super creamy potatoes and a great sauce made the whole thing outstanding. Unfortunately it went down hill a bit from there as I ordered the cheese selection only to be presented with the cheesecake ! After watching my wife eat her dessert for 5 mins the cheese arrived. Serving local produce is always a good idea if the quality is right but the Brie type cheese served was so bland and not creamy at all...the local blue cheese on the platter I thought was anonymous. On the plus side the Malbec we ordered was very good and my wife thought the Brecon gin was so good.

We visited on 10June 2021.A very young girl ( masked, so not sure if a schoolgirl or older) showed us to an empty table in a small empty room. Covid rules obviously affect the use of rooms at the moment, and there were 2-3 couples in the room next door. We were then abandoned for at least 10 minutes- no drinks offered, no menus brought. Eventually we requested menus, and the food menu appeared. Girl appeared after another 10-12 minutes, stood poised with pencil on pad for food orders. Rather embarrassedly, we said we’d quite like a drink . Girl disappeared to get drinks menu. Husband requested one of the local ales mentioned. Girl said she’d have to go away and ask. Returned to say only one was available. To her credit, she offered him a sample of it, and he then ordered a pint. I requested a white wine spritzer, which the waitress asked me how to make . Delicious when it arrived.Food ordering- waitress did not know what the soup of the day was, “ i’ll have to go and ask”.Table still empty. No cutlery, mats, salt and pepper, candle, flowers- just wood.OK, it’s a simple place, but they delivered the starter and, later, the main course, without thinking to bring cutlery. Food getting cold while they scurried off to find cutlery wrapped in a paper napkin. Just awful.FOOD- this was very good indeed, and we felt our spirits lifting.Cost of visit- reasonable.Slight ( well, major) boo- boo with food-I had ordered roast cod on a bed of vegetables. The fish was lovely, but did seem quite light in texture. On the receipt it was listed as hake! No- one had thought to ask if that was ok with us.I hope it all improves! But we will give them some benefit of the doubt with the restrictions and undoubted staff shortages still an issue.

As a single traveller, it can sometimes be a bit hit and miss as to where you are seated in a restaurant. It’s not as bad as the old days when you’d probably end up on some minuscule table by the toilets or once, hidden behind a curtain that was purposefully drawn after every course! When I arrived at Y Talbot, I was shown to the cavernous function room where I seemed to be the only diner! Hmm. However, they soon realised their mistake and I was ushered into the bright and airy restaurant, all socially spaced tables and extremely good hygiene. It all added to the slightly quirky fun of the place. It took me all of thirty second to choose from the wonderfully short menu (always a good sign) as the crab starter sounded great, as did the halibut main. Let’s go fish! I had a long distance chat with a couple on the other side of the room and then my starter arrived. Stunningly presented and I couldn’t wait to dive into it. Bliss! Perfect white crab meat in a shallow pond of the clearest consommé. I’m going to need a spoon for this I thought, just as the waitress arrived unbidden, with a spoon for me. There was a decent pause between courses and then the star of the show appeared. Well I thought that until the dessert arrived! Actually you couldn’t fit a fag paper between any of the courses in terms of presentation and execution. The halibut sat, perfectly cooked, on a bed of the silkiest potato puree and gently wilted spinach. Dappled about were the sort of delightful brown shrimps you only ever get in France. Bloody hell this chef knows what he is doing! It was utterly wonderful from start to finish. Balance. It all comes down to balance. If you were to force me into a critique, then then a micro gram more salt would have raised it to heaven. Was I tempted by a dessert? If the quality of the first two course was anything to go by, YES I WAS! I went for the creme brûlée with peach sorbet. I can sometimes feel a bit let down by an ill chosen dessert at the end of a really good meal but this sang! Like all three tenors on a plate with a countertenor for the sorbet. Perfect micron thick crunch on the top of wobbly vanilla heaven and a sweet and cleansing sorbet. Now, if you look at my previous reviews you may come to the conclusion that I am easily pleased as most of them have five stars but this is far from the truth. I do a lot of research and plan carefully. Y Talbot exceeded all of my expectations and if I could give more stars I could. The standard of the food and the service was worthy of a Michelin star (perhaps they’ve been offered and declined) and I am inordinately pleased that I had a three course lunch, a rarity for me. In fact, I’m going to book it for supper on Thursday, my last full day in this beautiful land. Thank you. P.S. I really really want the warm chocolate mousse. Really.

Covid is a difficult period for everyone and many places have temporary Covid-complainant measures in place. I wandered into the main hotel, and around the bar area looking for someone from whom to order food. Eventually I was directed to a side door that lead to a function room that was operating as a temporary restaurant/bar meal area. After this it all went well - friendly staff, quick and efficient service - but more importantly nice beer and tasty food. There was good social distancing in the room, the staff wore masks and payment was contact-less. Well worth a visit.

We stayed in Tregaron for a week and ate twice at the Talbot. We like good food and wine and frankly were surprised at the quality of the food and wine. The chef knows how to cook. Having worked at the Ritz and at Marco Pierre White restaurants he has been taught well. He has a flair for presentation and flavour combinations. Food was cooked well, down to the home cut chips. The waiting staff are well trained and it felt very relaxed. Allergies are well catered for and our dog was welcomed. The menu is changed every few days which is a bonus. We'll certainly eat there again if we return and highly recommend.

After all the good things we have been told about the Talbot, it was a little underwhelming. The matradee was not there to seat us we had to find her, the other two couples that arrived had to do the same so it was not the best of starts. A young girl sat us at our table and offered us the menus and asked if we would like drinks. We then ordered starters duck rillettes and a scotch egg, for mains Lemon sole and this was repeated as there was other fish dishes and a steak with a sauce. The starters arrived and the duck with the piccalilli was to my taste excellent! The Scotch egg was a little dry could have done with some salad and perhaps piccalilli. The mains was next the steak arrived for the wife and it was very good the fish arrived and I looked and thought this is not correct but I had a prod from the wife to say its ok eat it!! So when it comes time for desert I checked on the menu and said to the young girl the fish I had was the plaice not the sole to which she replied I am sorry so we ordered a desert between the two of us and we asked the matradee to come over to see what had happened and she apologized and offered to give us a desert and coffee in the price but it did not detract from the fact I did not get what I asked for and there was obviously a lack of training and she was a little too familiar not as professional as I would expect! However it was not a bad evening it was just not what we aspired to.We will return soon and hopefully it was just one of them days.

Y Talbot is on the edge of Tregaron in Mid-Wales, with parking outside the front door in the main square, or just around the corner. If staying, the rooms are well-maintained and comfortable. The bar area is lively and traditional in its atmosphere, whereas the restaurant is quieter. The food is the same high quality in both. Local ingredients feature prominently on the menu, with the local lamb and beef a particular feature. The atmosphere is relaxed. We booked this as a mother’s day meal but for a Saturday night, well in advance. On arriving we were shown to dinning area and then taken back to reception area and asked to sit down, no drinks offered. After a few minutes a waitress comes in saying there is a wait on the table (which we had booked) would we like to look at menus and wait or she could set up a table in the meeting room! We looked at menus and waited, still no drinks offered. After around 10mins she comes back and says the table is going to be a while and we’re probably better to eat in the meeting room. At this point I complained that this wasn’t really acceptable as we had booked well in advance and what were they going to offer as compensation. She disappeared again to talk to the manager and returned with the compensation of free starters or deserts. She then took us to the meeting room and laid up the table in front of us, still no drinks offered. At this point two of us just decided to go to the bar and get out own. Following this terrible start I actually can’t fault the food, I had scallops, followed by lamb and I can honestly say it was one of the nicest lamb dishes I’ve ever had. We did get offered drinks once our first round was finished and our starters were taken off the bill without complaint. Staff were polite following this but I really feel that the whole situation was handled badly and I think we should have been offered something as compensation rather than having to ask.

The bar was busy so we had the restaurant to ourselves. The waitress was very attentive....so thanks to her, and also the manageress. Our meals were delicious and piping hot - shepherd's pie and fish and chips. My dessert was most refreshing - elderflower jelly, summer fruits and sorbet We had an interesting conversation with the manageress about the famous first and limited edition book about the history of Tregaron. Sadly, at the moment, it is not available online to purchase. It's like looking for gold dust to try to find a copy. I hope that the manageress is able to buy a copy soon as it will add to her knowledge of Tregaron of which The Talbot has been part of the history for so many years.

Going to be brutal here. The Welsh are not always great at putting on a good show (and before readers rise in revolt, I am Welsh myself). So it is with great pleasure that I can report a fantastic venue in Wales that takes advantage of a lovely town with a market for passers through like us. Unlike its big neighbour Aberystwyth (which frankly is grimy) this is a nice place with "The Talbot" right in its main square.

This was a pub brimming with people and we nearly had to opt for a takeaway! We managed to get a table. The Camra ale was great as always. We had tomato soup for starters which had a bit too much olive oil finish for our liking. However the mains were lovely:We both had lamb, the cottage pie was filled with big chunks of lamb. I have the lamb rump with a crispy breast on the side. Service was really good.Would return.

Scallop starter very mean, as cut up into thin slices on an overwhelming pea purée. So difficult to taste scallop as not much of it. Steak was good, but price was high. The ambience with the fluorescent lighting and then two big bowl ceiling lights in the centre of the room was awful. Couldn't wait to leave as like being in a retirement home. It didn't make for an intimate comfortable setting in any way . The waitress was very young and untrained and unhelpful. Quite robotic. So disappointing! Especially as we had driven over 35 mins to get there. Shame

We have eaten Sunday lunch here quite a few times but it has been a while since we have been able to visit. There is now no dedicated Sunday lunch menu at a set price but an à la carte menu which we feel leads to a more expensive lunch. The starters range from £7- £12.50, the à la carte mains from £16.50 - £27.50 & desserts at £6.50 There is also a vegetarian & pub food section with prices from £9.50 to £13.50. All the meals we had were very very good, well presented and well cooked. The Cardigan Bay crab with tomato jelly was stunning. Our only criticism is that when you pay nearly £110 for 3 people including a bottle of wine you do expect some of the staff to be a little more "clued up" with the service. They were all extremely friendly but one or two need some training, not remembering to put a soup spoon on the table and us having to ask for one - page one stuff! Everytime we have visited The Talbot the restaurant has been quiet and we can't understand why it isn't busier, it should be as the food is very very good.

Well..... whilst on holiday, we were recommended the Talbot as a place to get a decent meal. Looking at the menu on line, we decided this was the place for our final meal of the holiday. A hotel, pub and restaurant under one roof, the prices were above what I would expect for 'pub' food. There is a reason why you pay a bit more.... it's fantastic! All three courses for all four of the family were stunning, making this a great experience and great value. The mains in particular (lamb, pork belly, salmon and steak) were completely cleared! The restaurant was fairly quiet but the service was excellent. Charlotte (who looked after us) was attentive, friendly but unobtrusive. Great work!If you want to keep the price down, the 'pub classics' on the menu also looked great (although I would encourage you to push the boat out a little)! A great way to end our holiday!

When The Talbot was taken over by new management, it was a breath of fresh air. Its still a lot better than it was; but it has now become very over-priced for what it offers. It only gets away with the prices because there is no choice in this area.

Food served to a common menu in the front bar or the restaurant. Excellent range of light, well finished and well prepared meals. I had the lamb and it was superb, tasty, balanced, beautifully presented. Followed by warm chocolate mouse with ice cream. Courteous service from the bar and waiting staff make this a super place to eat and much much better than you might expect from a small hotel in the centre of a large village. Fair prices for the good quality.

We ate in the pub rather than the restaurant. The pub is friendly and old and comfortable. The fishcake starter was amazing and the shepherds pie magnificent, although I don't like pies served in a separate bowl - such a faff to dig out. The burger was good too. The beer and the cider were excellent. All in all a really good dinner.

this place is steeped in history I believe it dates back to the 1300's. We went with friends for a meal which was excellent quality which was reflected in the price. The service was impeccable with happy staff. A good selection of beers are available at the bar. Definitely recommended be prepared for the check.

Popped in on the way back after a weekend camping. Hadn't heard anything about it but gave it a go. Had a lovely warm homely feel to the place and the menu seemed like food pub grub. Went for the salmon and it was absolutely stunning! Presented beautifully, with al dente cauli and a side of carrots. Bar staff friendly and helpful. Will be back!

We was stopping in the hotel and booked dinner in the restaurant. We both went for the Scallops starter and both of us thought it was very tasty. My wife went for the safe bet of lamb done two ways and she loved it. I had the Ox cheek and enjoyed it, but not the mash. This may be down to me as I cannot stand the over worked mash variety? Staff excellent and not over pushy.

Meeting friends for lunch on a wet and windy Saturday afternoon, could not think of a better place. The restaurant has just had a mini make over, painted walls and new carpet all look very fresh. Waitresses were very helpful, and we're happy to leave us alone to decide on our choices, none of this rushing to make up your mind. I decided on the lemon sole with shrimps in butter sauce, wilted gem lettuce and potatoes, I added the braised red cabbage to the meal. Wow, this was so yummy, the sole was light and cooked to perfection the buttery shrimps added flavour and the cabbage was just delicious. My dessert was caramelised banana cheesecake, a crisp base with a deep creamy topping which had sliced fresh banana sprinkled with sugar which had been blowtorched until the sugar had changed to caramel which upon cooling had hardened to a crisp. A cafetiere of coffee followed, we were left alone to enjoy the coffee and our company, a splendid afternoon was had by all. Will certainly be dining here again.

Whilst holidaying we wanted somewhere "nice" (not pub fayre) for an evening meal for 4 ( including our 2 teens). We opted for the restaurant rather than the bar wanting to "dress up a bit"; not sure we need have bothered though! Disappointed upon entering a rather sparse characterless room and felt rather uncomfortable initially that every word uttered would be overheard by other diners..but all credit to the super "waitress/ maitre d'" who really worked the room with her gentle, open and friendly down to earth banter which was a delight to behold. Worth her weight in gold ; sadly didn't catch her name but she is utterly invaluable to the experience. Husband and I had stunning starters: slated beetroot ( never had before but absolutely delicious, fabulous balance with roasted hazelnuts, sharp balsamic and to die for blue cheese..Mmmm) and super fresh homecooked fishcakes with sweet chilli sauce not your normal offerng : crammed with fresh flakes salmon bursting with real fishiness. Our teens opted for burgers as their main but super succulent real beef with minimal binding bar egg and seasoning and home fries. My husband had the lamb which was beautifully pink, very moist but not running blood ( I'm not a fan and hence he doesn't get it at home often...(the lamb I mean!!??!!) but even I thought it was good!). Totally biased but none beat my salted cod with herb crust and fresh tomato salad. Admittedly not a particularly attractive dish...the herb crust looked rather like a piece of old carpet...discussions of the old foam mats used for gym classes ensued!!...but it tasted out of this world bursting with fresh herbs..tarragon...mmm. There was a distinct lack of carbs to soak up the very pleasant glass of sauvignon blanc but with no ill effects a side order of spinach and sugar snaps were appreciated by all. We had been warned by the lovely waitress to make sure that we left room for dessert ....so my daughter had the most amazing chocolate tart with milk ice cream, my son ( the citrus king!!)had a stunning lemon dessert ( can't recall the correct descripton) and my husband the creme brulee. Wow!! Just Wow!!some of the best desserts I/ we have ever tasted. The balance of the flavours was out of this world. Pastry crisp with a hint of sweetness, no hint of sogginess. The fillings...the chocolate was dark and rich but not over sweet nor heavy and cloying: the lemon was sharp, light, creamy and tangy and the creme brulee absolutely perfect...so often just an eggy custard with a burnt sugary top; but this was brilliant!!: more than a custard, a delicacy and subtle vanilla flavour nothing too heavy perfect balance and the sugar top again fine and delicate: crisp and sweet but not burnt or too hard: just perfect. We are very spoilt to have some super restaurants and eateries in our home town of Harrogate but this chef and his team are special. All the flavours are there but there is a delicacy and respect for the flavours in both prep and execution. An absolute delight to enjoy such brilliant food it is a shame that more has not been done with the eating "space" to enhance the experience. You could do with some tips on creating ambience and intimacy in your dining room!!! Wish I were closer to help you maximise what you have with lighting, colour, furniture etc a long roo ne not be a long room!! Loose the lines!!!
