Wong's Fish & Chips in St Albans

Sadly this is no longer our go-to chippy after numerous appalling visits. We spent over £50 on a special birthday dinner for the family and were shocked to receive tiny portions of chips, sausages that were seemingly days old (very dry) and dry+tasteless egg fried rice that wasn't cooked properly. Very sad as for years we loved to visit Wong's... Unfortunately, with their increased prices and lowered standards, we can't justify spending money here and so we'll have to call somewhere else.

The house curry is to die for. Friendly family run business. Consistently give out top notch portions and food is always hot and fresh. I have no clue how people give negative reviews.

Straggly re heated chipd and hard crust. Gave a second chance but no improvement.

Chinese dishes very nice, fish and chips not so good.

The food this time was not good. The chips were dry as a rock. If I had a chance to go back, I would have taken back the food for an explanation.

Im telling thus is the best chinese chip shop around the chicken balls omg was in heaven i dont get chicken balls cos everywhere i go is just thick batter but these were out of this world no joke no much batter the tast omg and hot and fresh and ive travelled 20 miles just to eat there amazing food

Consistently wonderful fish and chips. I've tried all the fish and chips in St Albans and this is hands down the best.

Can’t beat Wongs for fish and chips. Good value in comparison to other places in St Albans. Quick and friendly service. Curry sauce is the best I’ve had from a chippy. Not tried the Chinese food but it’s on my list. Keep on fryin’.

Been going wongs for years, family run business. Very friendly staff. Quick service. Great range of menu. Haven't had it in a few years as moved away to Harpenden. But recently come up on delivery app. Food was lovely so much flavour, so much to pick from. Had a selection of food from Chinese food menu. Food was delivered hot. Parking out front of shop.

Disappointed with the soggy chips and curry with little flavour. Went off the reviews and came away disappointed.

But I honestly don't want too many people to know about the best fish and chip shop in this part of town.

Been a long time since my last visit to Wong's, but the food as always before Fantastic!

Rates no more than 3 stars owing to miserly portions of chips,not great Chinese food dishes and sometimes abrupt and rude counter staff.

Nice chips and curry sauce and they do battered pineapple rings Whahey! Although I think for me, Seaworld on Cell Barnes pips them to the post on chip quality.

Chips and curry sauce is the best in the area. Also had the rice and chicken satay meal box and it was the best tasting chinese I've had and the portion size was very generous. Food only took 10 minutes at opening time too! Highly recommended

We have used Wongs for years. Excellent fish and chip shop plus Chinese takeaway. Very friendly staff, they always ask after my Mum who is no longer able to get out and about as much.

I ended up at Wongs after a long bike ride. I had the chips, fried rice and I opted for BBQ sauce over curry sauce and was very happy with that decision. The chips at Wongs are really good, good chips shop chips, the BBQ sauce was an absolute delight, not too sweet but had that lovely smoky rib flavour and went really well with the rice and chips. Not bad for £4.80.

Food delicious and reasonable priced. However if your not fast enough you'll have to wait on a long que (which doesn't help if your hungry)

We had Fish and chips from Wongs tonight. After 12 weeks of shielding. The ONLY place I would eat from other than my kitchen at this time. It met every expectation. Outstanding service, huge portions and the best fish we’ve ever eaten. We would highly recommend a visit but make sure you’ve got plenty of room. We’re rolling around now! LOVE this place.

We visit wongs on a weekly basis and love to try the different Chinese options. No matter what we try the food is always of a great standard and good value for money. The customer service is brilliant. Excited to get straight to wongs after lockdown !

The staff are very friendly and the food is lovely . We have had Chinese food from here too. The chips,rice and curry sauce are really filling for a lunchtime meal. Not very easy to park outside but worth a walk.

We had two medium vegetable spring rolls, two chips and two curry sauce. Fantastic spring rolls, chips and curry sauce really good, I would prefer my curry sauce a bit hotter but the curry sauce was sweet impeccable Chinese best Chinese I have ever tasted.

Been ordering with them for 5 years. Just simply the best and it's reasonably priced. My fave is their chicken balls with chicken fried rice and bbq sauce.

Great food. Good portion sizes. Go here all the time. Love their curry and rice in a container it’s only about £6. Good fish and chips. The owners are lovely.

I use this convenient takeaway occasionally when passing, always found the Chinese dishes tasty and good size portions. recommend Singapore noodles (ask for Large).

I had to find a take away in St Albans on a Monday night. I tried Wongs as per the recommendations on this site. The fish was freshly cooked while I waited and was cooked well. I had to park down a side street but only about 100 yards away. It was worth the walk.....

All takeaway food I've bought here has been excellent and tremendous value for money. Very low prices, yet big big portions and always top quality food.

El personal son los propietarios, que son muy agradables, rápido y paciente a aquellos que es lento a la hora de decidir desde un menú completo. He estado yendo a Wongs durante más de 15 años, y se puede afirmar con seguridad es el mejor fish and chips" que he estado con la única posible excepción de uno que fui a como un adolescente en Hale en Cheshire pero probablemente nostalgia que habla más que otra cosa.

truly the best fish and chip shop in st.albans

I wouldn't normally feel the need to review a chip shop but had to on this occasion. No rock so I went for the cod. It was one of the nicest pieces of fish I'd had from a chip shop in a long time. Batter was tasty but not loads of it as well as being crispy but not oily. All you'd want from a portion of fish and chips.Job done!

I am a big fan of Fish n chips and have been to hundreds in my life. This is right up there. Certainly best in St Albans. Chip portions are huge btw...get plenty of salt and vinegar!

Wongs is a great family run chip shop that my family and I have been going to for years. Always friendly service, perfect fish and chips and great Chinese food, and always at reasonable prices. I have never been disappointed! Best fish and chips in the area by far.

This must be the best fish and chips around. Always choose the Haddock which is freshly cooked for you. The large portion of chips is very large. Prices are very good too.

Ordering for 9 people is never easy, but Wong's made no mistake in our order at all. A mix of fish and chips and Chinese food everything was spot on, still warm and tasted great. A very fair price and great quality, with very helpful staff. Would definitely recommend.

This family run restaurant boasts some of the best fish and chips in St Albans. Service is super-friendly (and sometimes the children pop out for a chat too - it’s been great to watch them grow up over the years). Whilst Wong’s serve a limited Chinese menu we have never tried it, sticking, instead, to a standard order of: 2xHaddock, 1 Large Chips, Curry sauce and mushy peas. This is more than enough for a hungry couple.It’s best to telephone your order ahead to make sure you don’t have to queue for too long (they get busy towards the weekend). Credit cards are accepted for orders over £9. The fish is succulent (and rarely dry like so many places) and the chips have a great flavour and aren’t too greasy. Wong's has to be one of my favorite Chinese Take Aways. The food is good value for money with the portions being far larger than expected! It is all nice tasting and never greasy or oily. I have also tried the chips and they are also cooked fresh, never soggy or greasy! I would definitely recommend!

Due to inflation, it is hard to come by good quality food for a good price. The amount of food which you receive for the amount you pay for is very good. Since I work in a Fish and Chips shop myself, the price is cheaper for bigger proportions of food in comparison to where I work. Just for a comparison, where I work you would have to pay £6.70 for £5.30 worth of food (small cod and small chips) at Wongs Fish and Chips shop.

Last year my wife and I were driving home and I was hungry. I had never bought anything from Wongs before but as we were driving past we pulled in and I went in to order something. For some reason I ended up ordering the chow mein and Hong Kong style sweet & sour pork mix, and that was it, I was hooked, it is delicious. I pop in about every two - three weeks, and each time I intend to try something else, but always come out with the same meal, the chow mein and sweet & sour pork, I would love to tell you that the rest of the food is great, and I'm sure it is, but I don't know, I can't get past this one. Oh, and Mr & Mrs Wong are very nice people.

Always have the fish and chips which are lovely although you get a massive portion of chips so ask for small bag tonight tried the chinese food the singapore noodles where fine but the chicken curry was so bad.The chicken was the worse ive ever tasted doesnt even look like chicken could not tell you what it was never ate it wont have the chinese again just the fish and chips .

For 15 years (count them!) I have been getting fish and chips from Wongs St Albans. They are absolutely wonderful chips the fish too - especially the haddock always excellent ! The good people that work at Wongs are lovely and friendly .

I got a take away on friday night and it was very poor, the chow main came out in one big block and seemed to be days old, the chicken balls in batter were more batter and rock hard.The chips were full of grease. Not good and the next day 4 of us that had tried to eat it had a bad belly, it became wongs make ya bum pong.So i would say give it a miss and go elsewhere

I would say its a chinese restaurant hence when ordering something from wongs better stick to chinese dishes.I recently had chips and fried chicken and both were terrible and seemed like total waste of money. On the contrary their chinese dishes are good.

I have had many a portion of Fish and Chips (normally Haddock) from Wongs. The wait is not normally too long and the portion sizes are good. The fish and chips have always been OK: never soggy, but then never brilliant. However, this is probably one of the better Fish and Chip shops in St.Albans.
