No volveremos. Lo siento.

As far as I know, this is as close as you'll get to authentic jerk chicken in Belfast, delicious coconut and beans rice, with simple spicy jerk chicken. And £6 for a large lunch? What's not to like. Very friendly staff too.

What a great little restaurant almost hidden away in Belfast. The girl who seated us (two tables of 4) & took our orders was really pleasant & helpful when attending to us. She was very knowledgeable about all the options on the menu which was really good for us because all we recognised was the jerk chicken. Mutton curry, jerk chicken, chickpea curry & spiced vegetables where the order of the day. We shared our meals around to try a bit of everything & I have to say they were all fantastic. We sat on for quite a while had desert & enjoyed the background reggae music & atmosphere. Rasta brownies & banana cake were ordered & were delicious. A really pleasant surprise as I was at first a little hesitant. It is also BYO so that helps with the cost too. I'd like to think we'll be back soon.

Well, I have eaten lunch here before, but my partner wanted to try something different for an evening meal. It would be fair to describe the external impression as 'unpretentious', and even challenging, but this is quickly dispelled on entering. The decor follows the Caribbean 'Windrush' immigrant theme, apparently from the name of the first ship to bring immigrants from there to the UK over 50 years ago.

If you want a good heartsome, unpretentious meal this is the place to visit. We arrived at 4.50 on Saturday to find the cafe didn't open to 5. We waited and we're greeted warmly by Wendy ( I believe the chef/owner's name is) and told to come on in. The interior of the restaurant is bright and cheerful. We were told from the start that our food would take a while as they had just opened and everything was cooked freshly. This was fine, because at all the tables there were boxes of dominoes ☺ when the food did arrive it was delicious and plentisome. My boyfriend had jerk beef which he said was delicious. I had lentils curried in coconut milk with rice and peas which was also beautiful. For sides we had fried plantain and dumplings. The food was fresh and the atmosphere relaxed. We were stuffed, but bought brownie and banana cake to bring home. Again, massive portions and absolutely scummy. A good veggie/vegan selection was available with well informed friendly staff. Can't wait to return

I had no idea was a Caribbean restaurant/cafe in Belfast until i walked past it one day. We had tried Caribbean food before on holiday and loved it and we eager to try Windrush. We had a lovely dinner with our two children on sat evening when the restaurant was quiet. The food was delicious and exactly what we hoped for. Unlike the previous reviews we thought the mutton curry and chick jerk were fantastic and full of flavour and the Caribbean deserts were an unexpected bonus. The bill for 4, 1 starter, 2 childrens meals, 2 main courses and 2 deserts came in under £50 which was great for central Belfast.

This place on paper sounded like the perfect place for me. Lovely atmosphere, quirky restaurant and very helpful staff. The starter was nice the corn fritters were very tastey. If the starter was anything thing to go by I thought this was going to be an excellent meal. However the mains were such a disappointment. I ordered the mutton curry. The curry lacked depth and spice. My boyfriend ordered jerk chicken. Again bland, with very little taste of jerk and the chicken was a horrible texture. The rice side again was totally bland boiled rice with a sparce scattering of beans. We also ordered sweet potato chips and maybe this is just my own taste but I just don't enjoy soft chips with no crunch. all in all a big shame had been looking forward to trying this place for a long time .

I had never eaten Caribbean food before so took a chance on this little cafe across the road from Queen's university. It was a beautiful day and so I sat on the pleasant little terrace outside. I was pleasantly surprised by the meal and while the food was spicier than I had been led to expect by the waiter (it's all contextual I suppose, as I hardly ever eat spicy food), it was very tasty, nicely presented and there was plenty of it. I had the jerk chicken wrap, which is full of chicken, rice, peppers, veg and spices. The staff were friendly and there is plenty of seating inside too, for those rare days in Belfast when you can't eat outside :)

We called into Windrush for a spot of lunch on a voucher deal, having enjoyed a previous visit for dinner. The café had a pleasant atmosphere, helped by the sunny colour scheme and cool reggae music.I ordered the pork and jerk chicken sambo [sandwich], my partner ordered the corn fritters. I did question this with him as I felt perhaps it might have been more of a side order, but it was listed in the lunches along with curries and sandwiches so he went ahead anyway. My sandwich was delicious – plenty of juicy meat and very spicy, just how I like it. It was accompanied by a side salad and some pineapple and a splodge of their amazing hot sauce. Regrettably, there was no bottle of hot sauce on the table as there had been for dinner. My partner was miffed at the size of the portion of 3 corn fritters; indeed it was more of side order. It didn’t come with salad or anything extra. It made the deal less good value, in comparison to what I got. Saying that, they were very light and tasted great. Drinks are generally fresh juices – my mango juice was tasty enough but room temperature and didn’t come with ice. Service was reasonable enough, nothing to complain about but nothing outstanding. I feel the young girl serving should have explained what was included in the lunch deal instead of just pointing generally in the direction of the board. I’m not sure I would rush back for lunch but I will definitely return for dinner to sample the goat curry once more, especially since it’s BYO. The cakes look wonderful too!

I bought a Living Social voucher for this restaurant but they could not fit me in for lunch. I telephoned on a number of occasions to try to book a table but the phone was never answered. I also emailed and did not receive a reply. The final time I phoned I got an answer but on hearing I had a voucher the restaurant was full for lunch, only available at 2.50pm on the day of phoning. I suggested other times but these were also full. My voucher was then running out and I pointed this out and the lady suggested that I sort this out with Living Social. I did this and Living Social were very apologetic and offered me a refund. My sister actually telephoned Windrush on the day I was told it was full, to be told that there were tables available and to come straightaway - no voucher was mentioned. So surprise surprise!! To sum up - I never got to sample the food or the atmosphere and having been put off probably never will.

There are a few daily options to choose from but limiting menu means things are done well! I appreciate the worried look she gave me when I said yes to her offer of hot sauce and sure, it was hot but it was also delicious! I've happily returned a number of times since. We had noticed the Windrush some time ago and looked in a couple of evenings when it was, unfortunately, packed and unable to accommodate us. When an offer came up for lunch, we jumped at the opportunity to give them a go.We are familiar with the area and did not expect to walk into a boutique restaurant and the interior and decor is alternative, but funky and fun and we felt very comfortable. The host was very friendly and personable and willing to talk through the menu and what was on offer. Whilst we only had lunch, both our dishes were very appetising with real flavour and, at least according to the stereotype we would have, was a real flavour or the Caribbean. The alternative drinks options were nice as a change (no coke!) and the dessert we had was very enjoyable and we could easily have been tempted to another. All in all, a little gem of a spot and we will definitely follow up with dinner, at a later date.

Didn't know what to expect from this, not having spoken to anyone who's been previously but the smells coming from the kitchen alone told me I was in for a treat.Had the ackee and salt fish fritters to start and they were out of this world. Had to ask for a bit more of Wendy's own fantastic hot sauce which the waitress kindly got for me, explaining they were rationing it a bit at the moment as they were in the middle of making another batch. I'm a bit of spice fiend so probably took a bit more than most would, but be careful if you're not - it's hot! Slow roast jerk pork with rice and peas for the main which was excellent. Jerk pork was delicately spiced rather than hot and really really good. Would've like some coconut through the rice and peas but that's more personal taste than a complaint. All in all a fantastic dining experience in lovely relaxed surroundings, Toots and The Maytals playing in the background and......it's byo! My friend book a table for 3 of us on a Friday evening....none of us had ever been before. She gave us the address as she had read it online. None of us could find the place and it turned out that there were 2 different addresses listed in different sites. No-one would answer the phone either when we tried to call to clarify location. As such, we arrived late but were greeted warmly. My 2 friends ordered starters and they enjoyed these. I ordered my main and was disappointed to be told that this was not available. I was offered an alternative which I accepted. The beef curry that arrived was cold. I bit into a chunk of beef and it had clearly come from the fridge and been briefly, and inadequately, reheated. I asked for it to be warmed through and it arrived back inedible. The beef was rubberised, but hot. My friend ordered the pork belly and again she was not impressed but the quality of the food and the sauce. The saving grace was the gluten free coconut cake which I ordered for dessert. The waitress was friendly and the bring your own wine helped ease the pain. Overall, avoid for evening meal unless you really don't mind poor quality food. Very disappointing.

I will admit me and the good lady didn't know what to expect as we have never experienced Caribbean style cooking. We went about 3.45pm and we were warmly greeted. We decided to place an order for food and the lady and we are assuming Wendy the owner said this wouldn't be a problem but she had to go to the bank for 4.30pm. We decided we would just have coffee and a piece of the mango and coconut cake and come back later in the evening for a meal. The cake arrived and hell almighty what a fantastic surprise. The cake was sponge being light and airy with a good hint of mango and plenty of coconut. This was smothered in a mango sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. If heaven is like this I will gladly become religious again. Her that has to be obeyed had a grin like a Cheshire cat and did nothing but groan with delight at every morsel she consumed. And I hasten to add we were so glad we booked to come back at 7.30 for dinner. We so looked forward to later and hung round like vultures in the university area, visiting the museum, sitting in Botanic Gardens and having a drink. That excited we couldn't wait to get through the door again. For starters the better 'alf had the yam fritters and I had the jerk chicken with sunshine salad. Both were great and a new experience. For mains she had the chicken stew and I had the jerk pork. Both were served with rice and peas and we ordered a portion of plantain. The pork was melt in the mouth and that soft I barely needed to chew. I added a tiny drop of the hot sauce on the table as from earlier in the day by tasting it I knew it was hot. Made no less with Scotch Bonnet chillis! The good lady said her chicken stew, the chicken being served on the bone was really tasty and I can voucher for that. To top it off like greedy pigs we had the mango and coconut cake, along with three glasses of juice. The service was great and friendly and as there were dominos on the table we played this too. The total bill a mere £42. The menu is small but a great treat and different. We will be back and it was a pity there was only another couple came in. We hope the business picks up and this wee gem becomes a must eat place in Belfast. A return visit is imminent and as a fun gesture Wendy gave the lady a piece of cake to take home for breakfast and by heck she won't sleep tonight dreaming about It! Check this place out and it's right beside Villa Italia on University Road.

Walked in at approximately 1.30 on Saturday afternoon (lunch service runs to 3 or 3.30 I think) to be greeted by a very polite and softly spoken (too softly) lady who provided us with menus. We loved the quirky decor in the restaurant and loved the carribean music playing in background. We have recently booked to go to Jamaica in November so came here for that reason.Once we looked at the already limited lunch menu the lady came back and explained that what we wanted to order was sold out. We wanted to order the starter of jerk chicken strips. We were very disappointed but went ahead and ordered the only starter that was left of corn fritters. Proceeded to order mains to be told there was only two chicken dishes left - only one portion of chicken stew left and also brown chicken stew so of course we had no option but to order one of each. To be honest it was all quite confusing because we couldn't understand the lady and had to ask her to repeat herself a few times so we didn't actually know what we had ordered till it arrived. Anyway... After a bit of a wait we received the corn fritters - they were very tasty indeed and worth the wait, they were obviously made fresh and you could tell. Very nice. After another good wait (there was only two other tables and ourselves) we received mains - the chicken in both stews was on the bone which can be off putting for my boyfriend but it was tasty and we enjoyed it. I was hoping for a bit of spice but the stews don't tend to be spicy. A lovely touch was the pineapple and cucumber salad garnish - very tasty! We tried the bottle of hot sauce that was on the table and it was a tad too spicy for me, in fact it blew my head off!!! Afterwards we decided to share a mango and coconut cake which was served with yummy ice cream. Very much enjoyed this too. When paying the bill we left a small tip and the waitress was surprised, it was quite sweet. I found the customer service to be lacking somewhat, a little bit confusing and the waitress lacked assertiveness I thought. She was shy and very very softly spoken making it difficult to have a conversation. Although there was only two or three tables at any one time, it took a while for plates etc to be cleared from tables. I really liked this place for it's quirkiness and it's food, I will definitely return to try the evening menu which had a lot more choice on it. The position of the restaurant is right next to the University so there's potential to be a great success however, I feel that they need to sharpen up on customer service and organisation in order to be successful in Belfast.

Have just celebrated our daughter's graduation from Queens University Belfast with our friends. We had an excellent lunch time meal and enjoyed the 'Carribean' ambiance. Wendy is a lovely character with a beaming smile. We had heard much about the cafe from our friends in Belfast and it certainly lived up to our expectations. Thank you for helping us to have another memorable experience in Belfast.

The food was food. Really good. But in order to have a a good restaurant you need more than this. The whole place was smelling like fish, because there is no actual wall to seperate the kitchen from the tables. The waitress was polite, the food was tasteful but way too expensive for the size of the portions. If its prices were 20% lower I think I would recomend it. But now I don't.

The Windrush Island Cafe is, at least as far as I am aware, the only Caribbean restaurant in Belfast, maybe even in Northern Ireland, and as such is a very welcome addition to the available range of cuisines. We were not previously familiar with West Indian cooking but my wife and I very much enjoyed this introduction. We started by sharing a jerk chicken dipper, tasty and quite hot, followed by pork and chicken "stews", both delicious (we always cross-taste!), very different flavours and milder than the starter. Service was pleasant and helpful and the restaurant is BYO. Unfortunately we were not aware of this in advance and the closest off-licence is that attached to Lavery's pub in Bradbury Place which is not the cheapest (£10 for a bottle costing less than £7 in Sainsbury's!) so make sure you bring your wine from home! The only other criticism is that the toilet arrangements are slightly eccentric but not enough to put us off. We will certainly be back.

I had in mind Mexican food that night, but when arrived to the restaurant was closed and we decided to go somewhere else, and I found this place (thank god the other place was closed). We didn't know what to expect, the music and the decor were GREAT.The girl who was serving she was really polite and patient :-) The food arrived with perfect timing between starter and main, and was Very Tasty, fresh and great portion. Unfortunately I haven't had space for dessert after a half starter and main, but from what I could see they look really good :-) Price was very good too ;-) After all that good food and service the night couldn't had started in better way. This restaurant is BYO

If you want your meal to be served with clockwork precision, this is probably not the place for you. However should you want to chill out with great tasting food in an informal, friendly location it would be hard to find a better venue. The authentic Caribbean food makes Windrush Island Cafe a popular place, we had to book well in advance for a Friday night. The jerk chicken starter was fantastic, but watch out for the little blob of paste on the side, it will blow your head off!!!! If you do go have a great time and in true Caribbean spirit "be happy"

O dear! Was looking forward to visiting this place since the write ups are all good but was terribly disapointed. Starters were poor and not served at the same time. Corn fritters were cold and greasy, saltfish and akee was tasteless. After a long wait, the main courses were floating in oil and the meat, pork, was fatty and tough. This restaurant is not clean! Cutlery and glasses were dirty, the floors had obviously not been mopped in ages and the bathroom was a disgrace! You couldn't even shut the door! We paid over £25 per head to eat poor food in not very hygenic conditions. Best bit was the byo wine!

I firstly happened upon Windrush Island cafe before it had officially opened. I popped in and was given a great welcome even though they were still in the process of decorating the restaurant. The restaurant opened without little fanfare and isn't very well known. I was doing some contracting work for a company that is just a few buildings away on the same street and they didn't know the place existed. This is possibly a good thing for the consumer as the place would be very busy otherwise. The restaurant has a fairly relaxed casual atmosphere. A lot of the tables are upcycled from old wooden cable reels and she is currently in the process of converting a pool table into a dining table. There are photos of Caribbean scenes on the wall and the owner Wendy who is of Jamacian extraction loves promoting the culture and food of the region. As others have pointed out, the menu can be quite limited. The main reason for this is that she likes to use fresh ingredients and focuses on doing a few dishes very well. Everything I've eaten has been fantastic though. She also makes some really nice cakes and her hot chocolate made with coconut milk is an especially great way to finish off a meal.I'd fully recommend a visit to Windrush. The food is of fantastic quality and is great value. It is BYO too, so makes for a great inexpensive night out.

Visited here for lunch this week during a conference at Queen's University which is only a couple of minutes walk away. This is a very warm and welcoming spot, very informal and the owner was very hospitable indeed. I went for the creole stew, with rice and peas and fried plantain, and had rasta brownies with ice-cream to finish. The main in particular was just great and the ingredients had very obviously been sourced and cooked with care. Wow it was tasty! So tasty in fact that I returned for lunch the following day and had Trinidadian dhal, roti, rice and peas, and just superb side veggies (spring and white cabbage, scotch bonnets etc.). The food, and the welcome, were yet again top notch and I felt extremely comfortable tucking into the lovingly cooked food in such a relaxing cafe style environment. If I were based in Belfast I would have lunch here on a regular basis. Great value, wholesome caribbean home-cooking, with a warm genuine welcome!

This is a quirky, fun, very different restaurant. It is BYO, with a limited selection on the menu. Our waitress was very friendly. The food is a bit slow coming out of the kitchen, but it is worth the wait.We had the sharing platter of starters. The pork ragout and escoveitched fish mains were all delicious. This was a real find and worth a visit if you want something different.

My wife and I have just left this gem of a cafe after one of the best lunches we have ever had. To put it simply, with freshly prepared food and a daily changing menu how can it be anything other than fantastic. I had the jerk turkey and it was excellent. My wife had the chicken and prawn rice and it too was spot on. However, it got better. Over coffee we had the mango and coconut cake. It was light and full of flavour. Then the chocolate tart got noticed by my wife and we were given a sample 'just to taste' as we were told. It too was outstanding. I cannot wait until we return.

Went for lunch and had a veggie dish named "aubergine rundown", meaning aubergine and carrots cooked in a coconut sauce, with rice and a salad with pineapple and lime dressing. It was really tasty and filling and only costed a fiver. I loved the concept, the decor has a Caribbean feel to it and the dinner menu is authentic Caribbean food. Service is casual and friendly. Great place for a lunch or casual dinner! I'll be back to taste more! Small minor point: it was pretty chilly inside.

This restaurant is a favourite of the family member who organised this dinner, and I can see why! The service was friendly, setting trendy and food delicious. It was also very relaxed, perfect for dining with baby and little man. We had two courses and there were clean plates all round, including the little man’s - he even said it was “the best dinner [he had] ever had”! Would definitely visit again if I was in the area.

I didn't get much this place, mostly if I need to order at a bar, of if I should wait for someone to come to the table. When I was at the place with my boyfriend, information about waiting was not mentioned anywhere, or at least we didn't see it written anywhere. We waited about 30 minutes at the table, then we went to ask to the bar and made the order there. We learned that it's one of those places where you need to order at the bar. And since it was not written anywhere, I don't know if it's a general concept in Dublin or in bars in the country, or if it's just here. Or maybe here after some hour, I really don't know. Another thing were meals. There was a menu written at a board outside, so we thought we could order something. But when we got to that, we were informed that the kitchen had closed few minutes ago, the place is serving just nuts and similar snacks, and someone from the staff needs to hide that menu border. In the end, we had some drinks and went for dinner somewhere else. The drink were good and I liked that the place has some significant cocktails to try. Since there is ordering at the bar, you need to pay after every single order. The place becomes very crowded and noisy in the evening so it's hard to hear anyone or anything besides loud music and general noise of people talking. This is general Irish pub thing. If I ever personally went back to the place to hangout and talk to someone, I would visit it during a day.
