We'd been here before, and were in the area on Sunday Nov 22nd so stopped to see if they were doing takeaway food. Not very busy due to lockdown, but absolutely no problem with getting roast dinners for four people, plus drinks including one takeaway pint of real ale. We waited outside and they brought it out when ready. All very nice food at a reasonable price, and it's good to be able to support places like this. It's only a pity we couldn't sit out in the garden at the back due to lockdown - we'll have to come back sometime.

Jake & Kirsty are not just hosts but a couple who go that extra mile. I rang to see if they could help with my mums funeral wake and they showed such care and support and made a difficult day the best it could be. The venue - beautiful room and garden, the food - Kirsty did a wonderful buffet with something for everyone. The attention to detail was amazing including background music put together from a list of artists provided to lighting a candle placed next to a picture of mum and favours as a lovely tribute. I have also been back for an anniversary meal since and again food was fantastic and the hosts just amazing. Would totally recommend.

Would agree with everything in previous post! Thanks to Jake and Kirsty for providing the perfect venue to host our son and daughter-in-law’s wedding reception. Not only wonderful food, but looking after us so well, allowing us to decorate the room the day before, and even taking photographs for us too on the day. Would definitely recommend to any couples not sure whether to go ahead and plan in the current situation - you can have a small-but-perfectly-formed sit-down reception in this lovely pub. Go for it!

We held our wedding reception at the Black Swan having had our plans restricted due Covid-19 regulations. This turned out to be the best decision we both made all year! We could not have felt more welcomed by the landlord and landlady and they guided and supported us through the process of planning the wedding reception. The food we were served was absolutely top class and nobody went hungry!! The service was impeccable the selection of drinks was ideal. They undoubtedly turned what could have been a disappointing afternoon into the perfect wedding experience in the circumstances. I would recommend the pub to anyone who wants a fantastic meal or a friendly drink, and I would certainly recommend couples affected by covid limitations consider The Black Swan as an option for a venue.

Front of house by Jake with the usual humour and interesting conversation. Great service from the waitress who’s name we didn’t catch - sorry! This team deserve all the support they can get for keeping a local business going right now. Good beer, wine and food with the right service. What’s not to like. See you soon.

A great plateful of 3 meats (beef, pork and gammon on our visit) plus loads of al dente veggies and A1 crispy roast potatoes and yorkshire pudding plus a thick flavoursome gravy at £8 (offer: normally £11) what more do you want of Sunday lunch? They also do a cheese based wellington for veggies and a carrot based one for vegans. No starters or the rest of the “other days” menu on Sunday: but why would you need them? If you have space, puds are highly recommended. Trad choice (Sticky Toffee Pudding, cheese cake, Eton Mess icecream sundae etc.) The delicious home made cheesecake is a real calorie buster but brilliant. Meats are all high welfare and local (nearby farmer by way of the butcher in Howden) and a short and interesting wine list has bottles at £16.50 - £21 plus fizz at a little more. (NOT from the supermarket!) The beer here is great; locally made guest ales well kept. Take Jake’s recommendation! All in all this is a charming little country pub well worth finding, run since last October by a young couple (Jake - front of house and Kirsty in the kitchen) as their first solo venture; service is quick, helpful, informal and charming. Children are welcome. Other days of the week they do a steak night, a fish & fizz night etc. At present they need you to book to eat. Suggest you do!

Was hunting for a place to eat after a day out at Bempton Cliffs, somewhere that was open for an early tea. When I booked this place I didn't appreciate what a gastronomic masterpiece of a meal I'll be encountering. The secret ingredients are: quality produce and a very talented chef. Husband and wife set up I believe, friendly, down to earth husband chap runs the bar, his wife is a former Ivy chef, creates the meals. They source their meat very locally, the quality really made the meal. Their alcohol is sourced from unique little family businesses too. I had a burger, the meat was beautiful. Good chips! Husband had the ribs, massive portion, the tender meat just fell off the bone, not too fatty as ribs can be at times. Pub is beautifully decorated too, modern but with a classic pub feel; pleasant, calm ambience. Wished I had room for dessert. One of the best pub meals I've ever had.

Full but tempted we devoured carrot cake and the cheesecake of the day.

Pub has undergone some refurbishment after new tenants. Still in need of some updating. Choice of two rooms to eat in, we were given a table to the rear of the bar area. Tables a little close together as all were taken. Good choice on the menu, mainly British pub food, but all very tasty and well presented. We all had a dessert too but comments about 'not enough custard' could be heard. Will be lovely once finished.

Having enjoyed the welcome and selection of ales here during the recent beer festival we decided to try out the Sunday lunch.this recently re-named pub offers off street parking and a decent sunny beer garden at the rear. Popular every Sunday we were offered a table as soon as one became available and this was fine for us as we were not short on time but we would probably book next time. The real ales on offer were kept very well and we spent a pleasant 30 minutes in the beer garden awaiting our table. We were then invited to take our seats and both of us couldn't resist the slow cooked lamb with mint gravy. Served in a generous portion with a whole host of vegetables and Yorkshire pudding this lamb really hit the spot. Melt in the mouth meat with a delicious gravy means we will return here regularly. Overall a small and friendly pub with a great selection of ale and fantastic food. Highly recommended.

Fine real ales always on point. Had a steak and ale pie that was freshly made that day with homemade chips and garden peas, plenty of gravy, delicious. My other half had lasagne, again homemade, with chips and garlic bread, delicious. 4 drinks, 2 meals, 1 pudding all for £30! Can't go wrong! Also had beef baguette with chips on a Sunday before, again delicious!

My family and I have eaten here regularly. The menu consists of everything you'd expect from a country pub and there are a number of frequently changing specials available. The food is nicely cooked (the chef understands that steaks don't necessarily need to be cremated) excellent value and very tasty, including real, crispy chips. The service is always very friendly and efficient. And then there's the selection of real ales. Marvellous. I highly recommend a visit.

Decided to try this place for the first time with a friend and we were pleasantly surprised. They were quite busy us managed to fit us in. I chose the the Old Smokie off the specials board which was poached smoked haddock topped with a poached egg and with a dill sauce , mash and veg, My fried chose the pan fried chicken breast with salad, we both enjoyed our dishes. Whilst waiting for them to clear our plates and offer us dessert we were saying to one another wouldn"t it be nice to have some of the more traditional old fashioned desserts on offer instead of the ubiquitous chocolate brownie which seems to be offered everywhere. And lo and behold the dessert menu must have had at least half a dozen of the traditional type puddings on offer with not a chocolate brownie in sight!! We were now spoilt for choice with bread and butter pudding , Fruit crumbles and several types of sponge pudding. In the end we both plumped for the Jam Roly Poly. Would deffinately come here again By the way this Is Real Ale Pub too!

We have been 5 times here, 3 lovely 1 not so good and the last one terrible we will not be going here again. The original chef has gone and it is the landlord who is cooking now, Had a black pudding tower with chips as starter, no salad or anything, A nut roast, chips and salad for other main meal, nut roast ,burnt at edges, chips tasted of scampi ( people b 4 us had scampi) informed chef, were told that he never cooks chips in fish pan, but hubbi also tasted scampi on his chips. He was not interested that the nut roast was like cardboard, just walked away, Left all my meal and got charged for the whole lot.

Close to the River Ouse, this is a small pub that has good beer, good food and is friendly and cosy.It has three cask ales, usually form Yorkshire Breweries, and has a dedicated vegetarian section on the menu - still not common in smaller pubs - so, well done. The food was very good - there was a hitch with a side dish that delayed its arrival, but the team were very apologetic, so the problem forgotten by us diners. We used the coy lounge with an good fire and a mixture of dining tables and settles. An unsettled filled pint was topped up without a quibble. This pub is recommended.

Dropped in by chance and so pleased we did,the lounge bar is decorated as a very traditional pub with what looks like the oriiginal roof beams there was a wonderful atmosphere. While the eating area is small it was more than ample for our needs service was great with no waiting time for a table and it was proper Sunday dinner big slabs of roast beef mash and roast potatoes with plenty of fresh veg,I cannot review the dessert menu as far to full from the main and what I thought was very reasonable price £29.60 for three Sunday dinners and three drinks look foward to my next visit.

Looked at the website which showed a nicely decorated dining room with tables set with tablecloths, napkins, wine glasses etc and two smartly dressed waitresses. So decided to book a table for Saturday night. We were very disappointed to find that the dining room was closed and the dining area was actually three tables in the bar. Our table was two round tables that they just pushed together, no tablecloths or wine glasses etc. There was only one waitress who was having to take all the orders and serve tables by herself. The starters were ok apart from the 70's style garnish of shredded iceberg lettuce and tomato quarters! The mains were not so good, the duck had hardly any meat on it all and what bit there was was overcooked and tough. The cottage pie appeared to have been thrown on the plate and it didn't look very appealing although it did taste slightly better than it looked!, the mixed grill was very disappointing with just a piece of rare steak (did ask for medium), a piece of gammon, a sausage and a piece of black pudding not much for £12.95. The presentation of the food was not good at all and lacked flair. Also the food could have been hotter. The dishes that the chips and vegetables were served in didn't match in fact they looked like dishes that had been at the bottom of the kitchen cupboard for the past 20 years. This is not a restaurant it is just a country pub serving very below average food and should not describe itself has anything other than that. It should also make it clear when you book a table that you will not be in a dining room but in the bar. Will not be returning.

Decided to try another "off the beaten track" pub that served food, checked trip advisor(as you do) and decided on Whelans at Asselby...Says Main street Howden but in reality its second village along from howden, about two miles.Plenty parking, lovely smallish pub, lounge & bar.Lovely real ales-i had mild and very tasty..Ordered two main courses only, partner had chicken with bacon & stilton with a creamy sauce,i have medallions of pork and peppercorn sauce,my pork was marginally over cooked but sauce made up for it-proper sauce, yummy.Partner commented sauce was warm but enjoyed the meal also.Chatted to landlord who said he had recently taken over the pub as it used to be advertised as a "Irish" pub,to which i can confirm is NO longer a irish hostelry.......

Had a meal with some friends. The starters we're ok but the black pudding tower was only 2 rings high and the spicy meatballs although tasty weren't spicy. Mains were good, the vegetables were quite bland but this was made up for by the home cooked chips. The puddings were great. Very surprised that when we asked for the bill we were only given the total verbally and not written bill was provided. I'm sure the amount was right but would have liked to have checked for myself
