Wetherspoon's Robert The Bruce in Dumfries & Galloway

Came in for a family meal. We ordered a curry, 5 bean chilli and steak and kidney pie along with drinks. For us it was great value and really friendly staff. Nice and quiet for a Sunday evening.

What an absolute ripoff. Went with a friend for lunch, paid £16.40 for a small fish fillet, a spoonful of mushy peas and a handful of lukewarm chips also a 6oz burger with 1 slice of gherkin and a splash of sauce and even less chips, about 9 or ten…. Normally I’m a fan of Wetherspoons but this must be the worst place I have ever eaten…. If you fancy a ‘spoons avoid this one..

Flat lifeless beer, I have never been served a more poor pint of Abbot, I tried two both the same, looked good when served then spatter a couple of mouth full just went dead. My son tried a Hawkshead and it went the same way.

One of the most basic meals that we have received from the Wetherspoons brand. The staff did their best but you could tell that there was a shortage of serving staff and the food whilst edible was one of the most basic meals that we have ever received in a Wetherspoons. More of a boozers bar than a restaurant bar!

So we arrived, and ordered our drinks and food through the app. We was sat upstairs near the kitchen and the amount of childish behaviour and shouting from the kitchen was very unacceptable. Myself and my partner ordered from the burger menu, burnt burgers and very dry, also whilst eating a table close by ordered drinks, we witnessed staff bringing them up and putting them in the table without any interaction whatsoever. Not very professional at all.

The worst spoons breakfast. Egg and beans were cold. Should have sent it back. No longer a cheap meal.

Took one look at the menu and headed for the door. It looked like an inviting watering-hole from a distance but turned out to be Wetherspoons. See further comments to the restaurant.

Monday lunchtime, and it was handy so my friend and I went there. Staff were lovely but table had not been wiped down. Food came. My burger was hard as rock and no flavour. Whisky sauce cold and congealed. Chips and onion rings were good, freshly cooked and hot. Disabled toilet was awful. Everyone was using it rather than go upstairs, which I can't being disabled. It was filthy and no water from tap. If it wasn't for the friendly, helpful staff it wouldn't have as many stars.

We chose main courses only and I have to mention my sirloin steak was the best I've tasted in a long time! Cooked to perfection! It was served with a good portion of fresh lettuce and quinoa salad. Service was prompt (although clearing of the tables was not so efficient!) Thank you!

Came through to visit family and took them out for lunch. My son suggested here as it’s affordable which yes like most Wetherspoons can’t really fault it for that like most Wetherspoons. Unfortunately had to go upstairs because downstairs was full. Tables upstairs are shoe horned in. Just no room. Really need to remove a couple of tables. Was the most uncomfortable experience ever but grandkids were sick of walking around so we decided to stay put. And had to sit at 2 separate tables. Food and drinks were ordered via the app and brought within about 15 mins which was good. Unfortunately one of the children’s drinks was wrong so I asked if it could be changed and was abruptly told I would have to go to the bar to sort it out incase there was a price difference. Before I had a chance to say anything else she just disappeared p. Very ignorant. I normally have good experiences at Wetherspoons but that’s 2 bad experiences in the last few weeks. Let’s hope there aren’t anymore. But at least I know the next time I’m visiting my family not to come here.

its a Thursday evening, not busy, staff too busy talking about their day at uni to serve. totally ignored, tables not cleaned, if they are looking for spoons to close," come on down to the Robert the Bruce Dumfries".. its a mess. food is awful, even the cheap price would not tempt me to come here again. Oh and by the way "All rite pal" is not the way to address a customer.

Me and my friend went in for food and a drink the food came out cold,not cooked I was very disappointed paying 12 for a meal you would expect for the food to be at a good standard within 2 seconds of me sitting down after ordering my food came out I knew almost straight away that it was not cooked from fresh very disappointed with the service the coke I ordered was very flat I will not going in here again when confronted the manager of the restaurant he admitted that the bacon that my friend ordered in here panini that it came pre cooked and they warmed it in the microwave the bacon was white also I ordered a hunters chicken the everything was cold and the peas were rock hard along with the chicken.

This was the perfect stop on our historic walkabout in Glasgow. Lots of locals enjoying their usuals, it seemed. The fish & chips were perfect and the pints were refreshing. Very friendly staff, nice clean joint in a great area.

I really enjoy going to a Wetherspoons around the UK. Popped into Wetherspoons in Dumfries at 11:40 for a breakfast to be told they stop doing breakfasts at 11:30! Every Wetherspoons in the UK does breakfasts until 12 and I regular attend for a breakfast around 11:40-11:50. Dumfries Wetherspoons just doing their own thing! Not good at all!

No change at this Wetherspoons. They did'ent wipe the tables before the pandemic, and they are not wiping or sanatising the tables now. We went in 3 times and never seen any one wipe the tables (NOT ONCE).

Four of us went here for food whilst on a short break in Dumfries. The only real positive I could say about the place is that the service is quick. However, upon arrival we were told to go upstairs and find a table. We found one, however it was dirty (covered in sauce and crumbs). The service was pretty poor, barely any interaction with the staff and it took a good while for our used plates and cutlery to be taken away. The food was OK. We got chicken wings, chicken strips and chicken bites to share which were all good. However, the mains were horrible. The steak in the mixed grill was really tough and chewy and the sausages tasted cheap. The macaroni cheese was bland. The bangers and mash may as well have been called mash and peas because the plate was predominately peas. I know that the food is generally good value for money, however, I would just expect slightly better standards from a place like this.

Had the empire burger in here and as many other posts I've got tried many a burger giving places a top ten and the Bruce has made it to my 2nd fav for a burger now Cooked to perfection presented perfectly really was impressed, as didnt expect what I got handed to me Worth the money and didn't take long to be served either

Seated quickly. Standard Spoons food and enjoyed by us all. Staff need to clean the tables more. We had a lot of empty drinks and had to ask for them to be removed as there was no more room.

on arrival at your pub we were allocated a table order breakfast which arrived promptly, it looked lovely but the bacon and beans were cold , i reported this and it was removed and brought back, but it was the same food, the waitress even said who ate the hash brownie. It had the same eggs which i had dipped my toast in and by now the beans were hot but the rest of the food was cold. We just got up and left. I have work in my kitchens and i am sorry but a new meal has always been given as a replacement. I am sorry to say but you are the worst wetherspoons I have ever been too and i come from Newcastle and I have been to a few and everyone of them have served hot food. We have been to the Bruce a few times and every time its been disappointing so sorry we wont be back!!

it was a quiet saturday afternoon , and when we arrived its was quiet enough that we didnt need to ask for a table and seated ourselves at an available table. on walking in i noted that there was a staff member watching us all the way to our table and gave me the feeling that perhaps we should have waited to be seated or that she was waiting to see where we sat so she could wipe the table. the table we sat at was sticky with food residue and was wet. there were tables around that needed cleared and wiped and yet she stood and eventually went and wiped a table at the request of the patrons, then had to be asked by us and other tables to come and wipe which was alarming in todays new normal.ordered food and it arrived very quickly.ham egg and chips hit the spot as was exactly what i wanted and the bbq panini was nice. for the price the food is good, the venue is bright and airy and was nice and quiet but more attention needed by staff

I was disappointed with the breakfast order they got it wrong twice and it was cold. Every other time i have been in the breakfast has been okay.

When we entered was quite busy in bar area as rugby was on found a table up back table was sticky and had not been cleaned even though seemed to be plenty of staff on food was mediocre and Luke warm staff not very friendly very disappointing even by Wetherspoon standards

Tried this pub for the first time today as I have visited this chain before. Very disappointed with my sirloin steak lunch. It looked fine however when I took the first bite I tasted this awful coating on the meat. When asked if the steak had a coating on it and if I could have an unseasoned one a very helpful member of staff said he would ask the kitchen. I was told they came seasoned and that was it. It was pointed out that it stated this fact - may I say in very tiny script, that the steaks " are seasoned by us". Ended up with a fresh plate of chips and my peppercorn sauce. An expensive lunch at £12!

I visited one quiet Friday afternoon for lunch with my friend.Despite urging people to order via their app the WiFi didn’t appear to be working. However, the food was most disappointing. I had the BBQ Chicken the chicken was not cooked enough and cheese had certainly not melted. It looked as if our meals had just been chucked together. The table was also sticky. It had clearly not been wiped in some time.A disappointing experience.

Visited with business colleagues 16th Dec 2019 and left my fone. A colleague foned and they had it. I offered to drive the 3 hr journey back or pay for a courier but they said they'd send it to my lcoal wetherspoons in Sunderland via internal mail. After many messages, emails, fone calls 3 weeks later they're refusing to aknowledge the issue. I'm unable to keep in contact with my son who has autism or my 11yr old should an emergency arise. Absolutely appalling behaviour

Stayed in Dumfries one night breaking up a longer journey north. Called in hear for "cuury night" only one curry available everything else gone. Service was ok, meal was ok, pub was a bit rowdy but it was Thursday before xmas. For some reason called in the next morning and was pleasantly surprised Scottish breakfast was excellent, haggis superb. Coffee machine was broke, but instant was available from the bar. The young lad serving was clearly over worked because of this but coped in a friendly and efficient manner. So a bit of a mixed bag.

Wed 13th Nov, we went into The Robert Bruce for a bite of supper as we have been in before and found it okay. The menus on the table were advertising their festive range so we decided to try them, simply because it sounded good. The food on the menus was not priced, it stated you had to ask a manager for prices, which seemed odd but you got the usual drink with it, so we went ahead. Over £18 for a completely non edible, partly frozen, mostly burnt offering that was returned right away and replaced with more of the same. Mash that was still the same shape as the container it came out of and stone cold, carrots, so small and blackened as to be barely recognisable, parsnips that were tiny perfectly formed cubes of burnt / blackened awfulness, sausages in bacon, burnt to the same standard, and the turkey with stuffing that was partly frozen, was perfectly cylindrical, i.e. it came out of a pack or a tin. My wife ordered pizza, again not priced and described as 11(eleven) inch, but this effort arrived at the table with a two inch border all the way round containing nothing but a scraping of tomato paste. A bloody con, if it is a 7(SEVEN) inch pizza, sell it as that and do not falsely claim it to be 4 inches bigger. The topping did not extend past the SEVEN inch boundary. After the second plate of festive awfulness was presented at our table, the non smiling and silent server offered no apology and looked as if we were way out of order to have the audacity to complain. Our local one in Fife got the same vote with the feet for charging 5 different prices for the same product over the course of 4 visits and I'm afraid this branch of Tim's chain has also had the last of our hard earned cash.

We waited for 35 mins to be served which was acceptable as the restaurant was very busy. However, when the food arrived some of it was severely overcooked and some severely under cooked, on the same plate!

I would say I am generally a Wetherspoons fan having been in around 70 different ones around the UK. However my local in Dumfries is one of the ones I think are poor. I regularly say I will not be back but it is handy for me, so I suppose I only have myself to blame for my recent venture. I did not think things could get worse but how wrong was I.

I used to love going here food usually great. Recently food not same comes luke warm. My friend ordered lamb shank costs over 10 pounds and first time is cold raw carrots. Sent it back same one came back microwaved but she said was dry. I had a funny shaped pizza which was doughy just warm and no more same with my apple crumble and custard. Staff used to come round ask if everything is OK they don't do that now probably as they know what answer will be I won't be back I don't think such a shame

This was my first time, but my sons had been in before. What a nice relaxing atmosphere. The service was excellent as was the food, and prices very reasonable.

Table 23 was disgusting. The whole table had been scored all over by a knife or similar sharp object and included a fairly accurate etching of a penis. Said table should have been removed if staff and management had been doing their jobs properly.

At least it’s had an internal clean up and repaint , this building has a fabulous ceiling

My daughter and i had been in before for breakfast and it was great but tonights dinner not great.

Went in for lunch, chose a table which was full of stains. Got the menus which were also dirty and grubby. So decided to leave carpets and furniture could do with a good scrub even better still replacing

I have previously rated this poorly but on some recent visits I think there has been some improvements but still think it should be better. The tables are still a bit sticky with it taking a bit of time to clear them. Service can be sloppy on one occasion I ordered via the App and the food came before the drinks. The girl that brought the food was very apologetic and went and got them personally. But why does this happen the bar was very quiet at the time and staff were just standing talking.

We have been to the Robert the Bruce a couple of times since I last reviewed it and the establishment has maintained it's rating for me. Yes, I know that this is not an up market "Town Centre Eatery", but you can get a very acceptable well cooked meal for such a reasonable price.

Popped in for lunch, unlike many other Wetherspoons it's not feeling tired and run down. Many other wetherspoons now suffer from being too dark, a combination of the wood colours and carpets but this feels a bit brighter.

Another good meal here. Good service and freshly cooked. Our meal arrived in good time and was nice and hot. We have been here a few times and not been disappointed.

We dined here while staying for a few days in Dumfiries. Having dined in various wotherspoons restaurants this was more or less like thew rest of them. Our food was delicious and we had no complaints regarding our meals or the staff who were attentive and asked us if everythng was all right.

Went along to This Pub / Restaurant last Tuesday to have a meal. I had The gammon which itself was ok but all the meal was half cold on arrival t the table, not at tall presented neatly, half the plate was covered in peas , just thrown on, tomato burned as was the mushroom. Tomato sauce bottle was empty so we caught the girl serving and she brought us another bottle but it was empty too, really poor service, staff just didnt give a damn. Will i be back ? definately no.

I ordered the fish and chips which I have had on numerous occasions. It turned up dry as a bone and tiny, I mentioned it to the member of staff and my response was it's the fish we always have. Needless to say I went to the ar with my food to ask for my money back, at that point I was offered an alternative.

Would have been an ok experience other than the lads sat at the next table. They were eating/drinking all the condiments at their table. They were actually sucking the bottles it was disgusting. After our food we moved downstairs as their language was appalling too. I reported what they had done to a member of staff explaining they would need to get rid of the condiments on that table. The next thing she is laughing with the lads about what they had done!!!! Needless to say we are disgusted and will recommend no one ever eats at this establishment again unless there happy to share germs

While on holiday in Dumfries I decided to go to the Robert the Bruce for steak night as I am a regular customer of Wetherspoons. I waited for 15 minutes at the bar to be served with drinks. There was only one barman to serve the whole place which was very busy. We sat at a table upstairs which was covered in dirtly glasses and dishes - all the vacant tables were the same. No one was clearing tables. We moved the dishes on to another table but the actual table was sticky as was the menus. We decided not to eat and just finished our drinks and left. I have been to many Wetherspoons all over the country and have never seen anything like this place. It appears that they want everyone to order through their app and the staff were dealing with these orders rather than having bar service. Obviously we didn't eat here but I certainly could not recommend it.

We recently stayed in Dumfries for 4 nights and called here on 2 nights. This was the only busy pub that we saw and when you consider the drink prices it's no wonder. Combine that with cheap and tasty food and its a great destination.

Went Sunday 4aug.lots of tables not cleared, had to ask for our table to be wiped. Staff member, girl with long hair in ponytail, so bored and dragging her feet. Take it there was no manager present as the place would not have been run by lazy unhelpful staff.

Okay I'm a big spoons fan and ive visited diff places up n down the country. called in my local spoons for curry night on Thursday had my best ever spoons meal chicken tikka masala with the trimmings and a stella for £7.15 was expecting some microwave crap this is not what i got at all i rec a gorgeous meal the spices and flavours were amazing a clean plate soon followed ....knock off the stella and about £4 for a meal this nice shows others how it should be done ... i eat at spoons at least once a week through my travels with work and this was by far my best ever meal ..well done Dumfries deffo be back soon

Visited this restaurant twice for breakfast, i had toasted bloomer with butter and jam couldnt finish all the toast as too much on plate for me. My husband had the cooked breakfast which was gluten free. Very pleasant visit. Then one evening decided to go for dinner I had haggis, turnip and mashed potatoes. the haggis and turnip was very tasty but the powdered dried potato mash was absolutely disgusting wet on outside but dried an flaky inside yuk.

Bar service is typical of Wetherspoon's with too few serving bar staff but that apart the mixed grill was terrific. I have never had a meal in any Wetherspoon's that wasn't top class - and the beer prices are terrific. But - oh dear the lack of bar staff- serving bar staff that is.

Havent got 100 characters to write. It is a good Wetherspoons, good beer, clean, competent staff. I knew what I wanted, what I would get and that it would be good value for money

We visited for an evening meal and found the place to have a good atmosphere, it was also busy for a Wednesday night. We found a table, which could have done with a good wipe-down, along with the menu's. That said, once we cleaned it ourselves, it was fine. The service was very good, the food arrived quickly. It was hot, well presented and good quality. The drinks were very well priced and again good quality. We gave it 3*s because of the sticky menu and table, which is a shame as everything else was great. If in the area we would visit again.

Dropped in for a coffee to break up our long journey. Coffee is self service from a machine which is pretty normal these day, but was barely hot. Didn’t try the food but plenty of people were eating

I encountered the most tasteful of Wetherspoons carpets. I didn't look like too much blood had been spilt on it, and it appeared clean.

a few people have mentioned this place in the past but from the outside didn't think it would be that good but since we have tried it a short while ago been there 3 times on our visits to Dumfries only tried the breakfasts at the moment but what a plate full you get for a fiver & then for £1.20 you are given a mug to have as many hot drinks as you want out of the machine, these breakfasts are so filling they set you up for the day, in a couple of weeks time going to try the lunch as they have offers on that include a drink.
