Absolutely fab restaurant. Staff really helpful and friendly and the food is awesome! I can’t praise the restaurant enough - we had a really lovely evening - thank you.

We’ve eaten quite a lot of Mexican food in America but nothing compares to this place. It’s rustic and homely which adds to its the charm. The staff are lovely and the food is amazing. Worth visiting Bristol for and will definitely be back.

Booked a table, turned up and walked in, no staff anywhere to be seen, walked around for a few minutes, there were no other diners, Friday night 815pm…. Went to a place up the road, disappointed as was staying local.

Viva is always a treat to visit, the welcome and the food is always wonderful. Our first trip back since COVID was super, we felt safe, and they have an app to order and pay with.

The door was closed on arrival but we saw staff inside so gave the window a knock and they welcomed us in. Very glad we did as it was a pleasant experience with friends, with a few issues but overall good. The lighting in there wasn't the best, shadows made it hard to read the menu. There were no insects (for starters) because it wasn't season, when asked more information about this I wasn't given a very clear answer. The cheese on the nachos was "special cheese sauce", very gross American cheese, grated would be better. And rice dishes were very small. However the beans were super tasty, service was friendly and attentive. Great jalapeños on the nachos. Cocktails were good and lots of choice on the menu. And the salsa choices were interesting

Les llevó casi cuatro horas terminar de servir, tanto tiempo que uno de los nuestros se fue, tomó un tren de regreso a Londres y cenó, antes de que el hombrecito incompetente que se hacía pasar por un mesero terminara de sacar nuestros platos principales.Servimos nuestras propias bebidas y limpiamos la mesa nosotros mismos para ayudar sin el más mínimo reconocimiento o disculpa del restaurante.No había nadie más en el restaurante, así que Dios sabe cómo les tomó tanto tiempo. Reservamos una mesa para dieciocho personas. En ningún momento el gerente le aconsejó que esto fuera demasiado o recomendó un menú fijo. A su llegada, el restaurante no estaba muy ocupado y nuestro grupo hizo que el restaurante fuera bastante razonable.Llegamos a las 7 pm. Nuestras órdenes fueron tomadas poco a poco entre 8. 00 y 8. 30 pm. En este punto se nos informó que el horno solo tenía capacidad para cuatro enchiladas. No obstante, pedimos y todavía estábamos razonablemente alegres en este punto. Pero entonces. . .Durante las siguientes tres horas de la peor comida y servicio que habían tenido las dieciocho personas. La comida se traía un plato a la vez con al menos cinco minutos entre cada plato. El camarero no tenía idea de lo que habían ordenado e incluso tuvo que pedirle a la gente que volviera a pedir su comida. Muchas personas no recibieron ni su primer plato ni su plato principal. El camarero describió cinco platos como veganos que tenían huevos y productos lácteos y fueron comidos accidentalmente por miembros veganos del grupo. Numerosos miembros de nuestro grupo tuvieron que irse antes de comer porque les había llevado mucho tiempo. We went here for a meal this evening and it was incredible. The salsa verde and refried beans were the best I have ever had. Delicious food, extremely reasonable and fun, quirky decor! Super cute.

We had a family party of six for dinner.First impressions of this Mexican diner were a little unusual. Two tables had been pushed together so that we could all fit around but one was slightly higher than the other. The lighting was a bit bright and to begin with the general ambiance was like the party had just finished. But this was soon washed away with bottles of Sol, Corona, Modelo and Victoria beer plus a luscious jug of margarita well made, as good as any cocktail bar and spots better than Cuba where we went later.But forget all that, the food was the superstar here. Never mind Wahaca and all the other pseudo Tex Mex diners, this was the real deal. No chilli con carne, chimmi changas or burritos to be found here. Only authentic Mexican food cooked by a real mama Mexican chef. We all had different dishes too numerous to mention. I had Hurauchi which is pulled pork in a not too hot sauce on a grilled corn 'sandal'. Plenty on the plate. Everyone was happy. Excellent food.So forget the décor and go for the food and it wont break the bank either. Hurrah!

We went here as a last minute decision on a Saturday night. Having looked at the website we booked a table as they say if there is no bookings they may not open.Well the place was definitely open and by 8.30 was full.They were obviously not expecting so many people so they were a bit short of staff and there was a wait for drinks but once we had ordered we were not disappointed.Authentic genuine Mexican food that none of us could fault and we all said we would return.We loved the hats around the room that you could wear and the bunting made the restaurant feel such fun.Do give it a go.

After six years living in Texas we were missing authentic Mexican food. Everyone in the family loved it and the margaritas did not disappoint either! The staff were really friendly too. We will definitely return.

This is the place to go if you want to have true Mexican food. Not Texmex but real Mexican food. It is a family own restaurant, and owner are nicer people I have ever seen. They really take care about their customers. The food is fantastic and eating often in Mexican restaurant around the world this is one of the good ones.

I was looking for something a little different when I came across Viva La Mexicana. I wasn't sure at first as it was empty (Thursday at 7), but decided to stick with it. I was greeted by a lovely English gent (the owner?) who was friendly and helpful. Not being an expert I went for the set menu, which was quesilladas followed by enchiladas. The food was served by the Mexican chef and was tasty and well presented. Portions weren't huge (I was expecting more than a mouthful of rice), but freshly cooked and piping hot. Considering I was the only customer, service was a bit slow. I don't mind that between courses, but after I'd finished I had to approach the bar to settle the bill after 20 minutes waiting. But hey, it's laid back, and I wasn't in a rush. Will definitely return and try the cocktails.

Vine aquí para una comida y muy decepcionado considerando las buenas críticas, la comida de los socios fue muy seca y todo parecía estar en el microondas y sin sabor, buen guacamole y nachos, pero en general no está a la altura. No volveremos por desgracia. Carecía de especias y sabor fresco, y parecía un tío bens microondas, arroz y comida enlatada. Es una pena porque realmente queríamos disfrutarlo, ya que me encanta la comida mexicana. Servicio amable pero vino tinto servido con hielo frío.

This place continues to please, lovely dips to start at great price and then love the chicken and pork dishes. My husband likes chocolate one. This is run with very few staff so be patient and enjoy a cocktail first

Delicious Mexican food with the option to get an intense hit of spice. Reasonably priced and friendly service!! I would highly recommend the margarita cocktail. Already looking forward to my next visit.

Have walked past here loads of times but finally decided to pop in over the Christmas break. As someone who has been to Mexico and enjoyed the street food there, among other delights, the food here is delicious and very authentic. What a gem.

Great place to come for real authentic Mexican food. Prices are very reasonable and the portion sizes are more than enough. Food was very tasty, sides a little cool but overall, would happily eat here again.

We've been coming to Viva for 4+ years now and fell and the food NEVER disappoints - authentic Mexican food is WAY better than the standard tex mex we get in the UK! Do not expect anything like store bought or chain restaurant though - just switch your brain off if you haven't been here before and go with the flow.

After seeing the restaurant on 'Wriggle', we decided to take a visit and we had a wonderful time! I had a Magarita cocktail which was really lovely then me and my partner had nachos and both a dish off the traditional Mexican menu.

What a great find. Wonderful food, we shared the four starters/dips for £6 and they were great. Then the chocolaty wraps and the chicken tacos. Loved both main courses. The Mango alternative to ice cream also great. £45 for Two with half bottle of House red. Great value. Well worth a visit.

Food was incredibly tasty and the staff very friendly, would definitely recommend to anyone! We had meals from the Mexican streetfood section and both were delicious. Don’t miss out on the margaritas!

I booked viva la Mexicana for a surprise 30th birthday party. Had never been there before and couldn't have been more happy with my choice. Peter and his team are brilliant so welcoming and helpful. There ordering system for large groups is amazing! There were about 13 of us which can always be hard work when it comes to ordering and getting the food to the right person when it comes out there little check list of the menu worked a treat though. Food was delicious. Very tasty, big portions and low prices. Excellent venue with beautiful decor and nice music. Cannot recommend highly enough.

We had a fantastic meal there this evening, everything was great value, fresh and delicious. We ate from the street food menu as we were in a rush to go to a comedy show, and the staff were attentive - couldn’t fault them.

Have been a couple of times and always felt welcomed and looked after. Food is excellent and the Mexican beers very tasty. It's like visiting a friend's house for food. Such a little gem in East Street.

Me and my partner go here whenever we have a special occasion. It is our favourite place and we have been so many times. I always get the enchiladas which are amazing and my partner always has the emoladas, which is also amazing. The nachos are so good we get one each every time we go (too good to share haha) Proper authentic food! The staff are so friendly and welcoming. I’m sure we will be back again very shortly!

Having visited a couple of times now, it’s my go to place for Mexican food in Bristol. Great food, friendly, helpful staff, cosy atmosphere, and great margaritas. Reasonably priced to boot. Perfect place to spend quality time with friends and family.

A funny little place, not massively busy when we went, but was a nice evening. The food was great and the Margaritas were nice.

El menú hace una gran oferta de autenticidad de la comida y fue fantástico y muy diferente tanto desde el estereotipado "burritos y chili con carne"- como mole con una base de chocolate y vigilando las enchiladas. El menú era una mezcla de estilo tapas y platos principales - mixta y juego. Las dos principales sorpresas: el restaurante estaba muy tranquila (tan sólo otro par cuando visitamos) y la salsa caliente era excepcionalmente calientes a mi tolerancia relativamente alto chili. Ve por el más suave si no me convence!

Vegetarian tacos came with no cheese and mushrooms smelt and tasted horrible, in ripped taco shells so you couldn't eat them. Enchiladas were nice but definitely not worth £12.50. Won't be ordering again.

Love love love this place! Ignore the negative reviews - this is not a tex-mex restaurant, it's actual mex-mex so the dishes aren't what you'd expect but the flavours are just so good. Also some of the dishes are street food style so aren't meant to be piping hot. The enchiladas are a cheesy delight. Delivery time was as indicated no problems there.

Like being back in Mexico. A charming restaurant with a relaxed intimate vibe. The tacos al pastor took me right back to the streets of mexico :-) A great explanation of the Mex-Mex food in the front of the menu to ensue people aren't expecting Tex-Mex.

Really enjoyed trying Mex-Mex food rather than Tex-Mex. Generous portions and tasty food. Also recommend the specialist soft drinks, especially the Mexican Cola. We even bought some to take home with us. The staff were lovely and nothing was too much trouble - opening specially on a Sunday for us, wrapping up food to take home, getting us sombreros for a group photo and entertaining the only child in the group. Lovely atmosphere. We will be back!

We made a reservation for a Monday night when the restaurant would normally be closed and they opened their doors especially for our party of three.Ambience, food & Mexican wine were all simply excellent provided by cheery waiter and Columbian chef.Would recommend Viva La Mexicana and will definitely revisit.

An enjoyable meal at a different type of Mexican restaurant ( authentic "Mex Mex" cuisine apparently as opposed to the American-derived "Tex Mex" with which we are more familiar in the U.K.).Atmosphere (particularly the Mexican music!) was fun and the food was excellent. Service was a little slow but the waitresses were charming and all the staff were clearly working hard to make sure that everyone had a good time.

Went for dinner with another couple and had a lovely time. Food (all traditional Mexican, no Tex Mex allowed!) was cooked to perfection, a great selection of drinks including some great Mexican beers and a lovely atmosphere. Only sad point was it was very quiet with only a couple of other tables filled - this place deserves to be so much busier!

I went there last night with friends. Our food was delicious with only a couple of exceptions. The mocktails were tasty and fun. The waiter was lovely but has some slight difficulties with English. Overall it was a brilliant experience that makes me sad I'm moving away.

I open my speciality dish...Caluaco Al Tequila (£14.95!!) and I get 6/7 pieces of small burnt ribs with nothing else. The guacamole which was replacing the cheese didn't turn up nor did the olives. Finally we call them up to tell them and they HANG UP ON US and DO NOT answer our calls after trying about 30 times. Will NOT be ordering again, very poor all round.

This place is worth visiting Bristol for on it's own. Hell, it makes me want to visit Mexico!The food is exceptional, the service is great, and the margaritas are wonderful and served by the jug.My only complaint is that I'm always too full to try the deserts.

Went for dinner on a Friday night and came out happily satisfied! This is proper Mexican food as served in Mexico.Started off with tacos al pastor, followed by Pellizcada for me and Enmolada for my other half and we definitely felt like we'd been transported back to Mexico.This is isn't fine dining but rather hearty, family cooking experience which leaves you feel happy and content.

Food arrived in crushed boxes and luke warm. Not appetising.

Whoever made what I got clearly has never been near an actual taco in their life. I get that the British have no clue about Mexican food but this was disappointing even given low expectations.

For how authentic the mexican food is from viva la mexicana, I would spend the extra money if you think it's a bit pricey. Delivery time was good as restaurant is in Bedminster but they forgot my mexican cheese. :(

The first time me and my boyfriend visited Viva La Mexicana was last year around August. The food was great then but the service a bit poor and the atmosphere seemed somehow tense. (our mains were brought out before we finished our starters or before plates had been cleared) The second time around was really improved, we were a table of three this time so a different experience as well. We made a reservation in case it was crowded and got put at a table in a cozy corner. We ordered a cocktail pitcher and plenty of food. The Nachos were really beautiful because the chips are real corn chips- but it also makes them extremely filling. My friend ordered the Chicken with Chocolate Sauce and the manager was really nice by bringing out a sample as some people find the dish too rich. Overall, Viva La Mexicana is one of my favorite restaurants in Bristol for its authenticity and homely feeling.

There were some items missing. Chicken enchiladas were cold in the middle. Wrong dips served without warning. No bag at delivery as it was soaked with sauce due to the dishes being badly sealed. Horrible ! The restaurant did not even offer a part refund.

I'm sorry that Viva La Mexicana have had some iffy reviews from some clearly deluded or eclectic fuss pots... Perhaps those people are used to gourmet or the commercially known tex-mex food? MY experience of this restaurant was DELIGHTFUL!It really felt like I'd stepped into Mexico. With its simplistic, unpretentious layout, it's classic mexican dishes and real mexican drinks... it was a slice of true Mexico. The staff couldn't be better in my opinion. They had so much time for their customers and were so helpful in explaining the dishes on the menu, which in itself was an experience and a chance to learn more about Mexican culture. The food was unlike anything I have eaten in the UK. It can only be described as real traditional Mex-mex food. Which in my opinion makes this restaurant a city gem. The nachos were like none I've tasted before, a real treat. The mains were generous and delicious, good enough to take what I couldn't finish home!This is a family restaurant who are clearly passionate about their business and want to provide something special to the streets of Bristol.It's a 10 out of 10 from me!

Me and my first lady visited this restaurant in the second week of Jan '16 and it was absolutely amazingFor starters we had the 4 for £4 starters and the sharer for £8 and by the end we were pretty full. Pedro (Peter) helped us choose our meals and he clearly loves the food and believes in the restaurant, he was so sweet and helpful it was a breath of fresh air.I can't remember what the mains were called but one was £12 and the other was £8 and we couldn't finish them so had to take a doggy bag with us :)We stayed past 10 and were the last people in the restaurant but Pedro was insistent that we enjoyed our time there and not to rush.The atmosphere is great and I had such a great time and will definitely be coming back in future.

The meal was late and when it turned up it was not edible!! I am not sure what it was but it was not an enchilada. And for the price (which is too expensive) I was expecting something amazing!

The enchilada comes in a portion the size of a lasagne for 2 and is £12.50, I would pay £9 for that. There are no sides, no rice and the desserts are small as well. I wouldn't order again based on these prices.

Real authentic Mexican. Arrived quickly delivered by a friendly driver. Was all well packaged and hot. Recommended.

The worst food and service I have ever experienced. Ignored for over 5 minutes on arrival, took half an hour to get drinks, courses arrived in random order, one person's starter arrived and was finished before the rest turned up. A request for a fork was ignored, had to go and fetch it herself. Food was inedible and looked like a plate of vomit. Two hours after arrival one of us still didn't have a main course, then the wrong dish was delivered which caused further delay. This was supposed to be a birthday treat but turned out to be an ordeal we never want to repeat,

excellent food! good music, you feel in mexico and service Candela, one of the waitresses, not always could be better aware of what we needed and with a big smile, I recommend it! I will repeat !!!

Good ambience, perhaps too loud as frequented by local Spanish/Mexican peoples. Off-putting for those who are not from Mexico or Spain.Food was delivered as a starter and main, so was not warm/hot for the second course.Staff didn't really understand simple questions.

Absolutely incredible. Nothing else needs to be said really. Go immediately and make sure at least one of your party has the chicken enchiladas so you can try them. Creamy heaven. The margaritas are fantastic too. This is not tex mex. It is so so much better. Prepare to have every other Mexican restaurant you know ruined. I know where I'm booking my next holiday.

As the title suggests, that was all it was...A large group of us had the groupon offer for the cocktail and street food for £7. We all knew it was a limited menu for both food and cocktails, so no complaints there. A few of our group were late because of the bad traffic, and again, the staff were happy for us to wait. However, when we booked, they said we had to do 6 as they were busy at 6:30. At 6:30 there was only one other table in the Restaurant, and they only had a total of 4 other tables over the night, so I'm not sure why that was a problem?When our group was completed we ordered the drinks and the food. Some of us had nachos to start and they were...average...it look like they had used supermarket plastic cheese, but the jalapeno salasa was nice. But by the end the nacho's were swimming in liquid, making them soggy, and it was't pleasant.We then waited for our main courses. Two of us who had ordered the same dish were presented with ours, and then there was a wait of at least 10 minutes before everyone had their dishes! I understand that we were a big group, but 10 minutes is a long time to be staring at a plate of food! It is a good thing they warned us that the dishes were served semi-warm to semi-cold when we ordered or I would have been much more annoyed (although mine was stone cold my the time everyone else had theirs). Service was polite and done with a smile, but it didn't totally excuse the wait.The food was...average. I don't know much about traditional Mexican food, and it wasn't bad enough to send back, but I'm not sure I would chose it again. My pulled chicken didn't appear to have any seasoning on, and my Flautas (fried maize cones stuffed with the chicken) were so crispy I couldn't eat them with a fork. The last one was so over fried that the chicken inside was also deep fried and I couldn't eat it. The green salsa was different from the one on the nachos, which was a shame, but it had some flavour, whilst the rest of the dish I just found to be flavourless. The addition of cream (which I thought would be sour cream) was strange - it didn't add any flavour and in the end just left everything a bit soggy, I didn't enjoy it. Again, this was my expectations over the actual dish.Some of the group had desserts any enjoyed them, although they had run out of all but two slices of the Chocolate Torte - strange when we were the first in that evening and it was a fairly quiet night.So in conclusion - it was an experience. My knowledge of the cuisine probably didn't help, but I have to say it isn't something I would try again, or go back to. Average.

Don't go if you expect chain food and atmosphere. Lovely little family restaurant, lovely food and perfect service and waitress. All Mexican traditional food and drinks. Highly recommended!

Went with another couple that had bought us an Amazon Voucher.We had a few choices as it was a voucher deal but the food was really good and slightly different from the normal Mexican meals that we have had.The portions were huge and we all enjoyed.The only issue we had was the service was a little slow and we were asked three times after we had ordered if we would like to order !That said we all got what we ordered and thoroughly enjoyed it, we have already said that we will go back again to sample the full menu. Can't wait .

Waited an hour and a half for my food to be delivered, I called them at the 45 minute delivery time and they said they would be 5 mins, after 5 mins called again and they said they didn't know when it would be ready. When the food finally did arrive, it was awful, soggy tacos, dry chicken, plain hard nachos and very over priced for small portions. The Enchiladas that cost £12.50 consisted of 3 soggy miniture rolls. Very disappointing all round.

Amazing food, great value and friendly, knowledgeable service into the bargain - and for an experience of this quality, it really is a bargain. The best Margharitas in Bristol and utterly yummy food offering an authentic taste of Mexico. No Tex-Mex here - just the real thing. You simply have to go if you like good food! I don't live in Bristol but I'm definitely going back.
