Verrills Fish Shop in Hartlepool

We try to visit Verrills every time we go to visit relatives in Hartlepool. Last Friday we joined the queue at lunchtime. Once again we were not disappointed. Thick cod fillet in light crispy batter with chips to die for. Why can't all fish and chop shops be this good?

Due to shielding I've not had the chance to visit verrills for a while.Today's trip though more than made up for it.Fantastic service as always from the ladies, then freshly fried thick cod accompanied with the sweetest chips, the perfect combination.Strangely emotional, thanks to all at verrills, awesome as always

Fish and chips are lovely, and very good value. We got 2 half lots which consisted of two pieces of fish each and loads of chips. The fish was cooked to perfection with lovely thin crisp batter. Highly recommended!!

Always the best for a fish lunch or tea on the Headland and now doing coffees and ice creams and lollies for the little kids and big ones! Magic.

Just right for Friday night. As great as always. All the best to the lads and lasses. There’s a queue for a reason.

1/2 lot plenty for me. Tastiest fish and chips around. Take a slice of brown bread and small bottle of milk. Yum

My wife and I get fish and chips here once a week and they are always excellent. The staff are friendly and quick and the food is hot and tasty, properly fried just the way we like it.

1st and last!!! Never again in my life.... Would be canny if they actually give ya fish with ya batter

Well worth the 40 mile 'round trip. We've tried all the award winning fish shops in a 50 mile radius, but Verrils are outstanding and certainly the best.

Never disappointed massive queues tell it all. Always fresh and hot chip dinners. Best in the area by miles.

Great fish and chips as usual but sign on window says face covering must be worn. The bloke in front of us just walked in without one and was served. Why didn't staff just refuse to serve him. Please change your policy to help keep this virus in check.

This is fish and chips as I remember them. I closed my eyes and it was just like growing up in Lamcashire in the sixties. The plentiful supplie of chips taste just as they should and the pure white cod with the crispest of batters was the best I have had for years. Salt and vinegar from traditional dispensers was provided by the shop assistant. Walked outside and sat on the sea front with a friend for a good chat. He was visiting from Hull but was brought up on the headland. It doesn't get any better than this. Social distancing was operating very well, and it was well worth the trip from Newcastle. Plenty of free. Will happily repeat the experience very soon.

The Best cod and chips I’ve had in at least 12 years! Staff are very friendly too. All the family loved the food here.

Been twice lately after walk in the sun along the Headland. Doing everything correct for social distancing. My wife states "best fish & chips ever" Staff wearing protection well done.

Always great, but this time, I'd have to say these were the best fish and chips I've ever had.This is the most consistent chippy I know, it's a good half hour drive, but worth the effort as an occasional treat.Busy, but no no delay and perfect chips cooked in dripping and a lovely thick piece of freshly fried cod.Thank you all at verrills.

A queue at a chip shop is often a good sign. We were not disappointed, freshly cooked and wrapped in paper. The old ways are the best. Lovely tasting chips, fresh fish and crispy batter.

This used to be the best chippy in Hartlepool. I hadnt visited for a few years as I was working away. I was looking forward to a visit but the fish and chips are now a shadow of what they used to be. Very dissapointing.

Travel for an hour to get here not disappointed the fish & chips were delicious as usual.The fish was cooked perfectly lovely & moist.Living so far away we don’t come often but so far every time we have been they have been cooked to perfection.

Cooked fresh to order and as hot as. Fresh, big chunky fish and proper chips. Magic. Always a massive queue because it’s really really that good.

Have not been for a while but something is going wrong the chips are not as good as they used to be. This time they were very small and dry I don’t think they are doing their own potatoes but getting prepacked potatoes which are awful. We all agreed it’s definitely not like it used to be.

We have been using this fish shop the best in the area for a lot of years it is set in the heart of the old town .We love to buy our food rapped up and just a short drive through a few streets to the sea side .Park up and you can sit and look over towards tees port and enjoy your food in the sea air.

We travel from Durham for the best fish and chips ever.Excellent service and friendly staff. Always a queue but never long to wait.

Have been to Verrill's many times as I live in Hartlepool, but the other day my wife and I had a visit to the headland and got a small fish and chips, it looked a bit brown in the shop but thought nothing of it. Sat in the gardens opposite to eat them and was very disappointed, the batter and the chips were dark brown and dripping with grease, looked like really old oil! The fish was greasy but dry as sticks and the flesh was more grey than whit, really awful. As a comparison we were at fish face yesterday in Seaton Carew, golden crispy batter with white soft flakey cod, chips golden and crispy. Go to Seaton if you are looking for fish and chips, avoid Verrill's!

I've been visiting this fish shop on and off for over 50 years and the standard of the product has never failed to deliver. The portion size is good. The quality of the fish is excellent with decent chunky sized cod. Chips always brilliant. Worth waiting in the queue.

Discovered Verrills after a friend mentioned how good this chippy is and we were not

I used to have fish and chips at Verrills at least once a week when I lived in Hartlepool over 25 years ago, and there really was no competition. I rarely get to go these days - just occasionally when visiting the town - but nothing about the quality has changed. The only downside is the queues can be long, which is a testament to how good it is, but there are plenty of friendly staff who work hard and efficiently to serve everyone quickly.

Went down the "Pan" last year so stopped going, Tried them again recently, back to their yummy best.

Called here twice in two weeks, and I travel from Darlington to get fish and chips here, absolutely superb fish and chips. As good as, if not better than any I have ever had. Will be back soon.

Verrills has been trading for years, I can see why !! It's situated just around the corner from the Cosmopolitan, so perfect !

We’ve been coming here for the last 18 years and it’s still the best but the last two visits the chips were not like they used to be. They seemed like pre packed potatoes small and bitty. The fish wasn’t as meaty like it used to be. If they are like that next time we go we won’t be doing the 30 mile round trip to get there.

Couldn't fault them. Best in Hartlepool. Have them once per month. Very tasty and nice batter. Chips are really nice.

My mouths watering just thinking about this review - its definitely the Headlands Top Class Verrills Fish and Chip Shop - I'm like most - I love fish & chips with salt & vinegar and a few scraps with a tub of curry and a tub of mushy peas to go with them - a 1/2 lot is top value here - and now its September somehow the chips are the star of this wonderful gut busting meal - top marks 10/10 - the shop is immaculately clean plenty of meal choices from the blackboard on show - your served with friendly hard working chatty staff to make sure your not waiting to long in the queue - now's the right time to pay Verrills Fish and Chip Shop a visit

I’m not a regular visitor as I don’t live that part of town but visited today & absolutely loved the chip buttie I got & the quick service of the staff. I intend to visit more regular & will be recomnding to my family & friends.

have been many times over the years, always had great fish and chips but today was a bit of a let down.

We tried to get into verrills at easter and just laughed at the crazy queue and made a massive mistake and went somewhere else ( not saying, but waited ages for a big bag of grease)

Often come here when popping through to Hartlepool for the day when visiting family. Quality of food is usually very good and very tasty never had a bad meal from here. Will definitely be coming back.

My grandparents have come here from Sunderland every year on good Friday for fish and chips for decades and I can see why! Absolutely unreal fish and chips. We had to wait forty minutes but that’s fine we knew that would be the case. Inside the four women running Verrills were non stop busy but efficient and still chatting to customers and having a laugh. Ordering system is very organised. Prices are very reasonable with a huge portion of fish and chips being £5.70 and a “half lot” being around £3.80. Delicious. Everything was so tasty and cooked well. I’ll be back next good Friday!

Good Friday and the queue was down the street, but it was recommended so waited for 40 mins which normally I wouldn’t do for a chippy. Fish and chips was bang on and worth the wait, the shop looks a bit of a dump and could do with updating and have a proper menu sign instead of paper and pen but the food itself was spot on.

The only fish shop we ever go to in Hartlepool. Never disappointed. There’s always a queue outside, which shows how good it is.

Enjoyed a 'half lot ' with the other members of the U3a gardening group. It only opens for a few hours daily (more or less )

This fish shop has always had an excellent reputation and I had been meaning to try it for a long time. I have now been two weeks in a row and have been very impressed. The fish is beautifully cooked with tasty batter and white flaky pieces of cod. I did not sample the chips but they looked fine. There was a queue outside the door but the service was very quick and efficient.

In the heart of the oldest part of Hartlepool this is a great chippy! You can tell how good by the fact that there is a queue from the moment it opens until it closes.

best fish and chips in Hartlepool without a doubt. Do not forget the scraps! I did give four stars because of the hours seems to vary greatly so it is hard to judge if it is opened or not. MUST EAT if in Hartlepool!!

No puedes superar la gente venga de verrills para pescado y patatas fritas. Hacer cola fuera es normal pero cae rápidamente. Siempre vale la pena la espera un gran "fish and chips".

Vivir en Seaton Carew, que dispone de 4 tiendas de pescado frito con patatas fritas, siempre viajamos al cabo de pescado y patatas fritas. Verrills muestra Pero en los últimos 2 viajes de repente me pareció que tienen por el Nick! ! Pequeños peces, con gran cantidad de patatas fritas. Fuimos el viernes pasado me di cuenta de que no, que en la puerta sorprendido? En 1 de la tarde? Nunca ha sido así antes.

Visited today and certainly won't be rushing back. No peas, no curry sauce and no bread buns left!We both had Fish and Chips which were edible but nothing spectacular. Too many other places providing far better quality in Seaton Carew.

This is a very popular fish shop and never fails to deliver great fish and chips,my wife and i do a twenty mile round trip to this fish shop as she thinks it's the best around and worth the distance travelled and I'm sure all the locals agree.

We called in for Fish & Chips on Saturday the 11th of March. There was a small queue which was a long queue when we came out. The food was nice and we were please we had stopped off here. Shame they do not open on an evening.

Fish & Chip Shop on the Headland in Hartlepool. No seating inside but you can sit in the square next door. The fish and chips are superb. Worth the queue on a Friday lunchtime.

Visited today (9th February).The restaraunt is on the headland at Hartlepool.Its located away from the main headland shops on the left.We had takeaway food,and my large sausage and large chips were lovely bar a very few chips which were a bit hard but 95% of them were lovely and my sausage was well fried.Very busy in there even at 1215,and having ate the food i can see why

Verrills is most definitely the best chip shop in Hartlepool and a must visit if you are in the area

We have been coming here for the last 16 years usually once a month from Middlesbrough. Always the best fish you can get. The last two visits the standards seem to have dropped e.g. Fish smaller size and chips small and scrappy with batter not up to the usual standard. If they keep it to this standard we won't be travelling all that way for fish& chips.

Title says it all really. Opening times are few and far between but fish and chips are divine. I often find fish repetitive but this place is sublime.

Tried this fish & chip shop for the first time, to sit and eat on the beach enjoying our spell of hot sunny weather but disappointed as the batter was well/overcooked and chips were dry and not very nice to eat. The only thing that was nice was the fish inside. Chips ended up in the bin along with the burnt overcooked batter. Won't be visiting again and cannot recommend based on our experience. Very disappointing!

Obviously this restaurant has a very high reputation, which I personally feel is unwarranted.The meal I was given was very greasy and wasn't the best fish and chips I have tasted. I threw most of my chips away, so hopefully the seagulls can enjoy.After a fair wait in the queue, and quite high priced for the area, I would of expected much much better.I have been on a previous occasion for lunch time, but be warned it sometimes closes early for no apparent reason, so if you are visiting after 4.45 pm it is hit and miss!I for one, will not be returning to this chip shop as there is better in the area and Seaton Carew in only a stone throw away.

although there is no seating, there are seats in the park opposite, and it is very close to seats with views over the sea.

Quite simply the best fish and chips around, we've been coming here for at least 5 years since all the good fish and chip shops closed around our area, we can honestly say we've never had a bad meal from here. You don't get a massive portion but it's enough (quality not qauntity) and on a nice day there's plenty places around the shop outside to sit and eat them, we even took my dad down to try them and he'll always find something to twist about but even in his words they were BLOODY LOVELY!!! Give them a try!!!

We have been coming here once a week for some years & it really is the best fish & chips ever. We travel a round trip of 32 miles just for the fish & chips & they never cease to impress. Expect a queue as it is a really busy place. It is usually closed on Monday lunchtimes although it often opens then during summer holidays. Try t - you won't be disappointed.

After travelling from Canada and wanting to taste proper fish 'n' chips, we were told about Verrill's. What an absolute treat. Fresh, tasty, crispy, absolutely perfect. Even non-fish eaters in the family were thrilled. An absolute must.

Having heard so much about the Verrills and always seeming to miss them being open, I was happy to call in while taking the kids to the carnival. There was a line of people but the staff were working quickly. We only ordered 3x chips 1 with curry sauce. I was very disappointed the chips tasted like they had been cooked the night before and the curry sauce was weak with no real flavour. I think I will stick with the Fish and chips from Seaton.

Visiting friends in Middlesborough, we were asked if we would like some fish and chips for lunch. After saying yes please, they took us to old Hartlepool and Verills. The fish and chips were huge and absolutely delicious. Plenty of parking, really friendly staff and two minutes away, a sea front to sit and enjoy your meal. Absolutely perfect.

Locally clean shop and in a great location.great views and historic places to go to.plenty of parking.

disregard the fact there may be a queue, this is a fantastic chippy, staff are warm and welcoming, great menu, nothing to grumble about, I'm definitely coming back.

Friday 8th April. Lunchtime. The place was busy with a queue outside so we thought it really must be good. Fish and chips were ordered. Staff and service: quick and efficient. Couldn't fault. Size of portions: not generous at all. Quality: nothing special. Quite ordinary. Certainly nothing above average in the slightest. Stodgy chips and overcooked fish. Would we return? Possibly, for a bag of chips if we happened to be passing and were hungry. But nothing more. This place possibly gets its trade based on an ill founded reputation for being good. Based on our visit on Friday, £5.30 for a small portion of nondescript fish and chips is a waste of money.

Delicious fish and chips the traditional yummy taste. Great value , good size and loads of taste . Be warned this place is popular and not open all day. They open only over lunch and tea times. They close at 5.45pm so don't be disappointed. Go earlier if you don't want to queue but queue and appreciate some fine fayre anyway. They serve haddock and cod . They do serve half lots.

I'm sure we all know about Peter Mandelson and the guacamole! But Verrill's is one of the best fish and chip shops in the UK and well worth a trip out for.

This has become a weekly treat for me! As an occasional visitor I have often been to Verrills. I sampled fish and chips all over the country, but have to confess that Verrills is the tastiest as well as best value.Chips are perfection and the cod is thick cut and cooked to perfection!Just to clarify - this is a fish and chip take away. Not a restaurant

As a former resident, revisiting the town, I found myself at Verrill's on a Friday lunchtime. On the Headland on a windy day in December it can be pretty bleak, but . . . What a marvellous experience! Fifteen people in the queue, five smartly uniformed, switched-on staff, fantastic fish and chips. A memorable experience, and I would recommend it to any visitor looking for a taste of the real essence of Hartlepool!

I have visited the shop on a number of occasions and the majority of time greeted to the shop being shut. I return different times of the day and still yet to understand their timings! When i finally manage to get myself some fish and chips I have to say the hype was such a let down! Definitely not the best fish and chips I have tasted and would say they need to really make some improvements to keep customers!

Shut during its advertised (ludicrously minimal) opening hours during the Folk Festival when there were hundreds of captive customers available. Dreadful advertisement for the Town. I have eaten here once in the past and it was very good but this place must be losing an absolute fortune. Its attitude, practices and economics are an utter mystery. Soon to go bust no doubt!

Noticed on the menu blackboard that the word "Cod" had been replaced with "Fish" . And that just about sums it up!On our last few visits, the "fish" has been of very poor quality and the chips nowhere near as tasty as they used to be.Sadly, what used to be the best fish and chip shop in Hartlepool has rapidly gone downhill.

2nd visit this year and have once again come away very disappointed. Portions were very small and the fish was no where near as fresh/tasty as the half lots we had at the 'Almighty Cod' in nearby Seaton Carew. Don't know what's happened to Verrills as they used to be so good. Think it will be a long time before we try them again.

As a non native visitor to Hartlepool I had heard the legend of Verrills and had to try it, but I was told the opening hours were a bit of a mystery. Their reputation obviously ensures they survive! Chanced upon it when it was open and, even though we had to wait a while, oh my God it was fantastic and the portions huge. Better than anything we have had at other famous locations like Whitby etc. The queuing system was a bit bizarre, and later on we observed the staff seemed to take a pleasure in telling latecomers that they were closed (that mythical opening time thing again) but I can't wait to go back. Only a half portion next time though.

It was the most horrible fish and chips I ever hav under cook chip's and over cook fish didn't like it at all

Hand on heart, this is the best place to eat fish and chips... just delicious. So lucky to have this place on our doorstep, best opened eaten in the croft gardens and absorbing the beautiful history of the Headland. Highly recommended!!!!

A fantastic taste in Fish Cuisine, Frank and Elaine provide the tastiest Fish & Chip's in wonderful surroundings that can be found in Hartepool.

Lovely fish and chips, fish was chunky and very flavoursome, curry sauce average, good location to eat in park or on seafront. Check opening hours close sat at 1.15! And only open lunch time and early evening until 5.45 Mon to friday

I've lived in Hartlepool all my life and visited verrills fish and chip shop numerous times , it never fails to deliver , quite the best in the area by far , give yourself a well deserved treat and buy some , cross the road to Morrison gardens and eat them alfresco you won't be disappointed . Lovely chunky white cod & perfectly cooked chips! Has to be the best in town! Wouldn't go anywhere else. Usually has a long queue so be prepared for a short wait but worth it

A balmy , cool summers afternoon , walking along the sea wall the breeze coming in off Hartlepool Bay ; What could be better than Fish & chips if you are in Old Hartlepool a visit to this fish & Chip shop is a must : A decent sized Cod was freshly fried with an delicious batter , the chips OK . Absolutely ambrosial , delectable & appetizing. Verrills Fish & Chip shop deserves its admirable local reputation. Highly recommended.

Nothing compares to verrils in my eyes. My favourite ever meal. Half lots are just the right size. Not greasy at all like other fish shops. Love it! Never had better!

Having lived on the North East coast most of my life,but also well travelled,I have to say in my opinion Verrills are No 1. Fish shops nowadays only seem to fry to order as they are never sure they will sell all,this doesn't happen at Verrills which tells it's own story. Fish and chips by tradition is supposed to be a staple diet for us,after all we are an island ! so why is it so hard to find a quality fish shop,and why generally are the chips awful? Letters on a post card please. So the next time you are in the vacinity if the queues aren't too bad,order your F & C's and if the sun is shining get your salt & vinegar on,go and sit in the gardens by St Hilda's,and enjoy the tradition just as it should be. Not forgetting the immortal words of Bob to Terry in The Likely Lads and I quote " It's never not full this plaice It's never not full."

The experience in the shop during our latest visit was not as nice as it usually is. The staff were talking VERY loudly to colleagues and customers OVER the food when they were preparing it. This went on for our 15-20 minute wait and we come away with headaches and wondering if the servings had been accidental spat on. Not sure if we will be returning.

I'm sorry I don't like to put anybody's buisness down, but verrills is not what it was when I was a kid. The chips are greasy they don't do beans. When I was a kid it was probably the best chip shop in the country. Now it's well down the pecking order in the town. Come on sort it out get it to like it used to be
