£7.10 for a cappuccino, latte and a kitkat takeaway in the park! If it was good quality you could brush it off but it was foul.Asked for a dry cappuccino and a latte. The latte was Luke warm and so my son glugged it down before the first bench. My dry cappuccino is literally the worst I have ever been served. It was a Luke warm latte with chocolate on the top. Don’t ask for the top price for a coffee if you don’t know how to make one. Pay to train your staff

Do not visit if you are with children - you’ll be made to feel unwelcome. I tried to visit for lunch with my two children last week, and was told that unless we had a reservation they couldn’t fit us in. It was midday on a Monday, and there were two tables occupied. I understand that recent changes have forced restaurants to change their table layout but couldn’t believe it was even worth them opening if they could only take two bookings at a time. It was very apparent to me that they’re not family friendly, so go elsewhere if you’ve got kids with you. Shame really, with the playground and space in Clarence park I feel like they’d have much bigger market if they positioned themselves as a family restaurant!

Today for lunch we booked an outdoor table. The setting is beautiful but the service was terrible. We ordered but the wrong pasta dish arrived I said I would eat it as it looked lovely but just check it was for me because of Covid you won't be able to take it back. Another waiter came to the table and apologised that I had the wrong dish mine would now be cooked. I said I will have the other dish be said it's been thrown away already. We waited 20 mins everyone else had finished I had to leave and go back to work. My husband asked for the bill and they bought these dish. Totally pointless restaurant experience.

I hadn’t come here in a few years, after the change in management I was slightly disappointed by my pizza when visiting one evening. However my friend asked me to join her after she had visited a few times for pasta dishes and I’m so glad I accepted her invite! I was pleasantly surprised at my food. We ordered the porcini mushroom pasta and the sausage pasta dish and both were soooo full of flavour and absolutely delicious! Being Italian myself I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. The pasta was cooked fresh, just like they did years ago with the old management. It was a bit of a wait, there was only our table and another table yet we waited around 35 minutes for 2 pasta dishes but with it all being fresh and delicious it was worth the wait and can’t complain! The only thing I would say is that it’s a shame there’s not more pasta options! Will come back and hopefully have another pleasant experience :)

We had an excellent glass of cold draught Moretti and a lovely pizza from Verdi’s.We headed to Clarence Park early on a warm summer evening towards the end of the pandemic lockdown. There was about a twenty-minute (almost socially distanced) queue to order food and drinks. £5.50 (plus a £1 glass deposit) buys a pint of cold draught Moretti beer, but there were other alcoholic drinks (limit two per person), soft drinks, and teas / coffee available. Please note on the day we visited Verdi’s ran out of pizza dough before 7pm; on less busy days you can buy pizza dough for £2.50 to make a pizzas at home. All bottled beers were £3.

We are regular customers at Verdi’s (new management) and it is our favourite Italian restaurant in St Albans. The food, staff and ambience is all very Italian. You arrive at the restaurant and you immediately relax with the very welcoming and friendly staff and owner. The menu, apart from traditional dishes, includes little gems like ossobuco, pappardelle al cinghiale, gnocchi with pecorino cream or burrata with parma ham. When we ask for variations to the dishes, they are more than happy to oblige. The choice of wine is very good. Their house red is “Montepulciano”! and their choice of after meal liquors is also authentically Italian. That’s why for us Verdi is “home from home”. Fabio

My wife & I are visiting St Albans for the night, & being Italian myself, Ive always struggled to find a really good authentic Italian restaurant.. until tonight that is. Verdi’s is a little hidden gem of a restaurant that I would urge everyone to visit! From the moment we entered, we felt so welcome! The restaurant is cosy & small, but the atmosphere is everything you’d get from a family run Italian restaurant in Italy! Terry the owner sat with us & we chatted for ages, nothing is too much trouble for him & he is what makes this restaurant so perfect! The food is amazing, unlike anything you’d get from a typical chain restaurant. I had pasta, my wife had pizza. Terry gave us espresso’s on the house & we even had Ferraro rochers afterwards! I honestly can’t wait to come back here for our next visit. You won’t find better than this!

The resteraunt is a nice space. But. As we had already been asked what we wanted to drink while being handed a menue and asked for orange so we were committed. However were presented with a menu that was either a big breakfast but with not much variety on plate for about £9 or completely massive breakfast with everything for about £10. We went for large but ONLY because the combination on the on the half breakfast were not what we wanted. The two sausage were awful, 2 eggs fried, not poached the sauteed potatoes were anemic and the beans were just plain wierd(not normal baked beans). Even with beans felt dry and heavy. When will eaterys understand that a massive breakfast that cost more than an evening meal out is just too much to start the day with. It's just unnecessary. I would have preferred half that size breakfast for at most a ball park figure of £7. Not a massive one for over 10. This with a pot of tea for 2 comes in at a whopping £35. A huge spend before you have even started your day.

OK - so you don't always want to associate a restaurant with a toilet but a restaurant is not just about location. If you are interested in food then that is what a restaurant is all about. If you are interested in being seen or the "ambience" then photoshop yourself into some Michelin Star restaurants! So back to Verdi..... The food was lovely, the staff were friendly, helpful, funny and a little rushed but in a good way. If something wasn't right they wanted to make it right - if they forgot something they got it over with a smile and an apology. It didn't really happen to us but we saw it in the restaurant and everyone eating had a smile on their face. We could look into the kitchen which was very much on view through a large window. Clean, tidy, happy chefs working together. All good signs. The menu was a good mix of authentic Italian cuisine. Nothing ludicrously fancy and nothing ludicrously expensive. All the food came out at the right time and it all tasted fantastic. All four of us had fish and the two that had starters had really nicely prepared and presented dishes. Dessert was also nice - although the tiramisu was a little short of Madeira(!). Good coffee followed and a bill that did not leave us crying. all in all - a lovely evening (and a true Italian family experience - although our young waiter was not Italian as he pointed out!)

Back in the days of the old Verdi's (20 years ago), my ex and I ate there at least once a week, with never a complaint. The most obvious change is that they no longer serve pizzas - and they used to be the best pizzas in St Albans. But we quickly realised that one waitress (with very little English) and one chef struggled even to serve one course to one table - even when we made it clear that we didn't have all night (not that we expected fast food - we had well over an hour). The food was acceptable. The service was dreadful. I'm told there's a new pizza place in Fleetville. That's where we'll go next time.

She pulled out the spare chair, moved my bag to the floor and sat down with us to take our drinks order. When all 3 of us ordered soft drinks she made a comment ‘oh aren’t you the big drinkers’! We then waited over half an hour before the waiter came to take our order and we informed him that we hadn’t even had the menus, which we then brought to us. A further 15 minutes later the lady took our order, but the waiter came back to our table shortly after, placed my bag on the floor again and sat down with us to query who had ordered the carbonara which he then proceeded to tell me was made with raw egg, no cream and pigs cheek not bacon. This (and his closeness and bad breath) wasn’t selling it to me so i changed my order to the sausage pasta. Not sure if this was a good choice either as it was quite tasteless and bland. On another note the soap and hand cream in the ladies wc looked of a good quality in nice bottles but these had actually been refilled with cheap alternatives. That’s just a small point but not a good impression. Sadly having gone here for any years we will not be returning.

All six of us, 31 year old to a 92 year old, enjoyed every course. Beautifully cooked and flavoured Italian food. Excellent portions and value for money ahead of the Italian restaurants in the city center. Made to feel at home by all of the staff.

First time at Verdi's since new ownership. On arrival we were put onto a table which backed on to the ice cream unit. No room to manoeuvre between that and another table. Seating area was so dark that we had to raise the menu up to the light to read it. Waiter was lovely and very friendly. On a Saturday night at 7.30pm they had no bottled beer. Apparently had run out. Drinks were expensive. Menu was very poor. Quite a long time for food to arrive. Eventually brought some bread over and then starters arrived. Brushetta had a burnt bitter taste and minestrone soup no flavour at all. Risotto for mains was like a plate of stodge with empty shells of mussels. Ravioli had no sauce and was dry and hard. Carbonara was very bland with no bacon and inedible. When the waiter asked how food was, we told him. He said he would speak to manager. When she came over to speak to us, She only mentioned the carbonara being returned. Then in a patronising manner tried to explain to me that it was not an English carbonara but an Italian carbonara. I think going to an Italian restaurant it was clear I was expecting an Italian carbonara and not the stodge that was put in front if me. She took it off the bill but there was no apology. Dessert menu consisted of 3 desserts, but after the disaster mains we were reluctant to order anything else. When the bill arrived we had to question it as the we were charged £7.00 for salad instead of £4.50. It is really sad that Verdi's has chaged so much. Used to be a great Italian and we had so many lovely meals there over the years with family and friends. Horrible experience and will never go back again. Shame as with the right chef and a refurb it could be wonderful.

Stopped in here yesterday for a quick cup of coffee but were quickly convinced to try something for breakfast by the engaging and welcoming host (Jo). So glad I did. The restaurant was empty sadly but that did not hinder the atmosphere or the experience. We were entertained with meaningful discussion and the food was excellent and very reasonable priced. We went with the eggs Benedict. Egg superbly cooked. Good coffee. Great location tucked into the corner of Clarence park within a few minutes from. St. Albans Station and well worth that walk. Made a rainy hour into a memorable experience and will go back to try the evening menu.

Went there for dinner with some friends. we hadn't been for a while and the menu and place seemed different. Turns out they had changed hands. I think it is a work in progress. The food was hearty and in generous portions but the flavourings were not that great. The service needs a little help as well as one of party did not get his starter. To their credit, they whipped it up quickly and did not charge for it but it's not hard to get 6 starters right. The pricing is fair and it's not overly expensive. Visit and make your own mind up.

We went for a late dinner, first time we went since Verdi's changed ownership. Menu was much shorter, service very pleasant and fast. Veal and pasta were delicious, generous portions, and a decent amount of salad as well. I will definitley come back!

This had been a family favourite for many years. I say had because it has changed hands and re-opened under new ownership fairly recently.First impression was that we had walked into a doctor's surgery. The new owners have changed the lighting but it is now so bright inside that it borders on being unpleasant. The brightness kills any atmosphere that there might have been, and if you're looking for a romantic corner you're probably best off going outside to the park!!Still, we were warmly welcomed and quickly presented with menus. The first thing that we noticed was how much it has been shortened and then I realised that the reason was partly because pizzas no longer appear on the menu. I gather this is because there is no dedicated pizza chef. Time will tell whether a pizza chef can be found and the menu expanded. My other half had Vitello alla Milanese and asked for it to come with pasta which was not as on the menu but this request didn't prove a problem. The new owner (I think) explained in detail why they were serving veal as an escalope but not as it usually comes ie beaten to death. When she had finished the meal, my wife commented on how much nicer it had been than the usual pulverised version. One up to le patron! I went for Fettucine alla Pescatore. Nothing special but it was tasty. Service was good without too long a wait for the food after ordering. Staff were all pleasant. We ended up with coffee and limoncello on the house which went down well. The restaurant isn't anywhere near perfect yet and a lot of past patrons will not like it - as some have already remarked. But I say give the chap a chance before you write the place off.If the owner does get to read this, you MUST do something about the lighting. And also PLEASE ask your son not to stick his fingers in the ice cream in the cabinet by the entrance. If he must do it, wait until the customers have all gone home!!

I loved the old Verdis. They were great for every occasion, be it kid friendly lunches or romantic dinners. The staff were attentive, the food was great. There was nothing not to like.Conversely, there is little to like about the recently reopened restaurant under new ownership. On the plus, the staff were pleasant. But that's where the positives end. We waited 20 minutes before we were so much as offered a menu. And nearly as long again before taking our order. With hindsight, I wish they hadn't.My veal was inedible. Greasy and gristley with an oily after taste. At £16 it wasn't a budget option. The parmesan had a long black curly hair sticking out of the jar.I really wanted to like Verdis - the second coming - But the sad truth is, we won't be coming back.

This is a great place to shelter from the rain. No-one will bother you. You can sit there for a long time, no-one will serve you, and you can watch the two other diners waiting for their food. The staff prefer to empty the dishwasher, customers just get in the way of the work.We left after 20 minutes. No idea what the food is like, never even got the chance to order it.

Pleased to see Verdi's reopened after refurbishment. Even more pleased to see totally revamped menu. Smaller menu, but different. Disappointed as there are no plans to introduce pizzas due to absence of dedicated pizza chef. Remonstrated with new Manager about this but there are still lovely new choices on the menu! Recommend the soup, steak and fish. It will take time to get up to speed but a promising visit.
