Upstairs at The Grill in Cheshire West and Chester

This was a great place to eat. Lovely ambience and staff, excellent service. We both tried the steak frites and shared sides of onion rings and macaroni and cheese. We followed up with sticky toffee pudding, tea and coffee. The quality of the food and standard of presentation was excellent. Would definitely eat here again. Highly recommended.

Upstairs at the grill, downstairs seating. Beautiful food, great atmosphere and lovely staff. We have been here before with some friends so came back with our daughter for a weekend away. We were not disappointed. Would go again if we lived close by

I guess you could say “ it’s your own fault “ I saw the website whilst looking for somewhere special to eat and couldn’t resist. I knew going in it was pricey, but if the meal matches the hype I truly don’t mind. On arrival you get taken upstairs and then go through a process of having the menu explained and specials offered. The staff are friendly and attentive and extremely helpful, can’t praise them enough. Over your drink you also get shown a couple of cuts of meat. I get it, but personally don’t see the need. Choices made you then get to choose sides. I again don’t understand why these places can’t include a portion of sides but I guess the chance to make even more profit can’t be resisted. £5 for a small bowl of chips is impressive though! Wine is pricey as well, and tbh it was in my opinion disappointing. No Malbec, which has to be one of the best pairings with steak. The wine we selected was £40 a bottle, out interest I saw you can buy it for £5.81 online….. and it wasn’t a great pairing. The meal was…ok, my wife chose a slightly smaller steak than me and it only just qualified as “ medium rare”. Both our steaks were slightly too charred but ok overall. The fries come with chicken salt which is very salty but tbf the triple fried chips are very good. Given that by now we had spent close to £200 on 2 pre-dinner drinks and 2 steaks and chips with a bottle of wine and a shared sauce, we didn’t order anything else. Oh, and they add a discretionary surcharge, I don’t mind as long as I know because the service was very good and it’s what I would tip in any case but…. I liked a lot of things about this place but ultimately for me the food didn’t deliver and that was a shame. Charging high prices only works if the experience lives up to the £…..

We visited Here yesterday 2 March 2024. and from the moment we arrived we Knew we had picked a winner, our Party was twenty-four people, we all had different meals and starters, the feedback I got from my family was 5-star rating for Food, Drink, Service, & atmosphere, we all would recommend this Fine dining experience, hope to be back soon. An amazing evening, with amazing food and service. Having lived in Chester for years I have to admit that Upstairs at the Grill has never been on my radar, what have I been missing! Our evening started being ushered to a high table in the bar area for drinks, this has a French Brasserie feel with an influence of South America and a vast selection of beverages. With a glass of Champagne in hand, we carefully studied the Wine List looking for a bold red to accompany our impending steak selection, we found a rich Amarone from Veneto which was lovingly decanted and taken straight to our table. Next, food...... as you'd expect the menu has an extensive selection of steaks, and plenty of sides to choose from. To start I took the French Onion Soup, which is more like a rich gravy topped with grilled cheese, I accompanied this with a glass of sweet Gewurztraminer what a pairing, my dinner date had the fire-kissed King Scallops, laverbread, tarragon butter & sea herbs. For main course it had to be USDA Prime Delmonico, I love a Ribeye and how often do you get to sample the highest grade of steak with such a great marbling. We accompanied that with bone marrow, triple cooked chips, Heirloom tomatoes and the most amazing Iceberg lettuce with blue cheese espuma and Stilton crumbs, not to be missed. Now you may think this is all about the food, but the service was the crowning glory, since our return from Covid-19 I've struggled with the half hearted shipment of plates we now accept as service. At The Grill my faith has been restored that there are still some bastions left who value the impact of great service - Thank You 10/10

Everything from the booking process right through to leaving the restaurant was perfect. Dined there for my wife’s birthday and restaurant left a personal birthday card for her. Lovely touch. Staff are fantastic. Genuine, knowledgeable (and have passion for what they do). Nothing too much trouble. Cocktails to start were fabulous, and made us one especially (even though not on menu). This is a steak restaurant and as expected the food was brilliant. Cooked to perfection. Wine recommendation was spot on as well (recommend the Georgian Red). An absolute gem of a place, and looking forward to going back when next in Chester.

Second visit was just as good as the first a few years ago.

We went for my 18th birthday. The food was beyond good, everyone said it was delicious. The service was excellent, Elz created a special cocktail for my day and taught me how to make it afterwards. Lewis (our maître d’) showed us the special steak knives and their history. Overall would give 6 stars if possible.

Extremely expensive for mediocre steak £79.00 for T bone and fries I would describe as on the tough side and not what I would expect for the price.

Fantastic food fantastic atmosphere and great stuff. Connor the barman was great and made me a truffle cocktail which I will never forget! Even the toilets have style!

Top notch from start to finish. A real symphony of flavours. The presentation in the way everything is served is so nice. The service is brilliant, not too formal, just right. Special thanks to the team who made feel right at home. I even benefitted from a complimentary dessert as the team said I had to wait too long! Disappointing steak, I ordered ribeye medium rare , it looked cremated and dry when it arrived,I explained to the waiter but was told that it wasn’t burnt it’s the way it’s been specially cooked . I assumed the steak would be amazing when I read the menu and reviews , such a disappointment . Sides where nice and the sauce though

I do like a steak every so often, but more than not, when I've finished eating the most expensive thing on the menu (which a steak tends to be) I feel a little bit let down... well, I can now say this has changed having eaten here! I had the cheese soufflé for start, my wife the tempura oysters, and we both agreed mine was far superior. It was so soft and delicious. For main, we both had steak - ribeye for the ball-and-chain, and fillet for my good self - which we ordered with two types of butter, thrice cooked chips, salt n pepper onion rings, and creamy bacon and cabbage. My steak was smokey, which I dont recall reading it would be on the menu, but it probably did say it would be. Not that it was a surprise, I liked it, but the wife wasn't too keen. The chips were fantastic, the onion rings the best I've ever had, and the creamy cabbage and bacon... boy, I could have just eaten that all night and been satisfied. We never had desert as we were too full, although saying that, we did get a complimentary ice cream cone each at the end. It was very little, but tasted lovely, and was a nice touch for it to be free. All-in-all, the food was great, the staff were great, and the venue was great. Recommend it in a heartbeat. Yes, it is pricey, but you get what you pay for, and in this case it was well worth it.

I visited your fabulous restaurant with my 2 daughters on Saturday 3rd February and each of us was 100% ‘blown away’ with every aspect of our experience. Where do I start? Each and every member of staff was so welcoming and went the extra mile. A credit to themselves and your restaurant. And the food - totally and utterly delicious from start to finish. The venue too was so beautiful - we sat in the terrace - magical. To sum up, all 3 of us enjoyed every moment. Thank you so much.

Outstanding food in an intimate, if a little cramped, environment. Been here a few times now and am always stunned at how good the food is. Highly recommended. *First visit in 5 years. The decor has changed and they have expanded a little, but it's still seriously amazing food and a really special experience. Yes, there is no doubting its an expensive evening, but worth every penny for special occasions.

Having been to upstairs at they grill many times before they closed for a refurb/covid it was absolute favourite place to go. The service used to be next level , the food , it felt very personal years ago. However since expanding it’s lost that touch, it’s not just a very overpriced nice restaurant. The service isn’t the same as it used to be, ok it’s still ok but not how it was. You feel once you get down to the restaurant they aren’t as attentive. Yes food is still good but overall it’s not like it used to be (and not for the best) plus places that automatically put the tip onto the bill are kinda rude. I’m sure you can ask for it to be removed but how awkward is that especially when you’re sat so close to another table.

First visit. Food excellent. Every single item on the plate was excellent. If your looking for a special treat it ain't cheap. But this is the place.

When you call into a restaurant as you walk past and book a table for that same night you expect to just get a meal. We called into Upstairs At The Grill and got a whole lot more. The staff are so welcoming from the off, the food is excellent with hidden delights and the wine list is mind blowing. Connor served us all evening and he was brilliant. Thank you Connor, Richard, Milo, Jack and all the staff for a wonderful evening.

Meat expensive and tasteless. Side dishes small and average. Peppercorn sauce small and only warm. Price a rip off. Won't be going ever again.

This is a proper restaurant service really good the food was excellent, bit pricey but you get what you pay for. If your celebrating a special occasion this is the place

All I can say is Wow. I was brought here by my wife who has a dairy intolerance as a belated Christmas gift and the staff were really attentive and thorough with regards to her needs. To start i had the scallops which were extremely tender and full of flavour while my wife had the beetroot tartar which she loved. For mains I splashed out and had a porterhouse initially I thought it was expensive but when it arrived it was cooked perfectly and have never had steak as good in my life and definitely justified the price as sides I had dauphinous potatoes and creamed cabbage with bacon and they where perfect accompaniments to the steak while my wife had the halibut with a tomato salad with she really enjoyed. All in all we will most definitely be returning. What an amazing restaurant and experience

When you’ve tasted the French onion soup it’s difficult to choose anything else as a starter, so my husband tells me. Although the prawn cocktail and the beetroot are my personal favourites. The staff are attentive and always on hand to top up your drink, or advise you on the menu. Thank you. Sarah x

Visited Upstairs at the Grill today, having not been since pre-covid. I had awesome memories of this place, but left disappointed today unfortunately We ordered ribeye each, and both came overcooked. Medium rare was cooked medium well, and medium was cooked well done. There was not a bit of pink to be seen, not even the slightest gradient of colour, and fibres dry. The meat however was incredibly tasty, and beef jus was lovely. The haggis and dauphinoise sides were very good. The table next to us had the same feedback regarding overcooked steak, but great tasting. Hoping desserts would make up for it, but were very underwhelming.

Must admit I was disappointed...been going here over the years and have always loved it. However this time I was in the 'extension' which is not a patch on the original downstairs space!! Not to self....make sure I book downstairs only! I found it did not have the same vibe and was rather chilly. Secondly, I requested 'medium rare' and my steak arrived 'well done'....bizarre in a steak restaurant!! So my friend had finished her meal and I ate afterwards on my own....not quite the vibe I was looking for when I booked (however.... we were given the option to send both back so we could eat together...my friends steak was perfect so I think it was too good for her to chance it)... When mine was replaced it was good and the sides were perfect.....just a shame that there were a couple of situations from making it a perfect occasion.

Opted for the £90 tomahawk I've tasted better for half the price, the waiter was a bit ott and the service level fell when a large group came in. Shame really but I won't be returning

This was the first time I’d visited Upstairs at The Grill and it certainly won’t be the last time, I really enjoyed it. We booked an early evening meal at 6.30 with friends. We all enjoyed the great service. We were shown to seats in the bar and talked through the cocktails. After our drinks arrived a server explained the menu, we particularly liked seeing the various areas of the animal that the steak came from. We selected prawn cocktail, scallops, oysters and beetroot for starters followed by a steak platter, sirloin and haddock for our main courses. All the food was FANTASTIC, we were very impressed. The service was faultless, we had a lovely evening. We will be returning in the summer to enjoy another meal sitting outside on the terrace if not before!

We last came around 10yrs ago and my partner has raved about it since. So I booked a couple of nights in chester and a meal here as a birthday surprise. It went down a treat. We shared a porterhouse steak it was unreal ! Every detail from the pre cocktails to the wine in your carafe in your table and the beautiful food is top drawer. We've ate at the likes of Wolfgang puk steak restaurant and upstairs at the grill trumps the lot ❤️

I had the Christmas soup, and I wasn't a fan at all. Was like thick gravy, so for me, that wasn't soup I enjoy. My partner had the roast dinner which she enjoyed but for the price I didn't think it was worth it. Staff were lovely though so credit to them

From start to finish the whole evening was amazing. You are first seated at the bar area where the knowledgeable and attentive staff talk you through the wine and food menu. Once you have ordered you are taken down to the dining area. Owing to the size of the restraunt and number of tables there is a feeling of exclusivity. The food was out of this world! Without question the best steak we've ever had! And arguably, the best service we have ever had from a team. Highly recommended. We will most certainly be returning.

It was an expensive meal but we were aware of this beforehand and feel the overall experience of enjoying the exquisite food so well presented makes it worthwhile. Looking forward to a re-visit!

I visited for the third time this year and it gets better every time... The drinks were served with such knowledge. The food was phenominal and im still talking about it today. The staff are so professional, yet so kind and considerate. I can't wait to return.

The atmosphere in this little restaurant is lovely, especially at this time of year. However I have to say that I felt thoroughly ripped off after our experience there. The prices are extortionate for food that is nice, but not nice enough to warrant these prices and we waited an hour to be seated at our table which had been pre booked weeks ago, meaning that it was 10pm by the time we got our starters. I have had nicer food for a fraction of the price in nearby restaurants in the last few weeks. The staff were arrogant and aloof and I have to say its very pretentious. I wouldn't recommend.

Fantastic first visit to this restaurant, food was beautiful, service was absolutely spot on and the venue is very nice. Beautiful Christmas decorations and a lovely atmosphere. We hadn’t booked but this was a Monday and was still busy. If visiting I recomend ask for a table upstairs on the terrace it’s beautiful.

First time here although I've walked past countless times previously. I really enjoyed the whole experience. The staff are first class and the food is delicious. We don't get out much these days but for special occasions this place will now be top of the list. A brilliant afternoon.

Was really excited to visit after reading the reviews. The service was good Tbf. We chose the Christmas lunch menu and was told the onion soup was the best and had been perfected over the years. For me it was like a gravy with cheese on top which had melted and left an oil floating, I did a swop with my husband who chose the ceaser salad, which was good. My chicken dish was odd it had a jus on the plate then a jug of sauce and a bucket of limp fries. Husband had the cauliflower which also came with a bucket of fries!!!?? Wine prices high and our bottle had been decanted so I've no idea if it was the actual one I chose or maybe something else??? I thought that to be very odd decanted wine should stand for around 2 hours, think it's more of a gimmick here. My cocktail before service was very good and the best part of the experience. I don't think I will return.

We celebrated our anniversary here and Omg.... Our dining experience was amazing from start to finish. The staff and service 100% and the food/cocktails were fabulous, we will definitely be back. What a gorgeous place to spend an evening celebrating 🎉

Booked for 3pm. Greeted warmly and shown to our table. Cold day but lovely and warm in the restaurant. Food was amazing - French onion soup amazing! Best French onion I’ve ever tasted! Shared chateaubriand cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. Quite pricey but we were aware of that so no issues. £169 incl bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. Staff were friendly and attentive. Fabulous meal highly recommend.

From greeting at reception by the wonderful Italian lady to pre meal drinks in the bar and then onto table service the whole experience was outstanding, table service in the reception area by a really knowledgeable Spanish gentleman who guided us through the wine and food menu. The experience continued with Davidson who was also very well versed in his knowledge of the food he was serving, then continued to prepare a cesar salad at the table which was superb, his attentiveness continued throughout the meal. Would urge others to try this exceptional restaurant for a food experience of a lifetime.

I'm a vegan but all my girl friends are meat eaters. I had the cauliflower meal. It was delicious. But I did have to ask if there was anything vegan as the menu had very little choice for me. In the end my food was delicious. A little over priced for what it was but us vegan always get screwed with the price so I'm used to it

We came tonight to celebrate my partners birthday, we had the sharing butchers block which was absolutely delicious and so tasty, the service was brilliant everyone was so attentive and friendly, then they came out out with complimentry ice cream cones which was such a lovely gesture, would highly recommend this place, the food was out of this world and the staff are so lovely and friendly, absolutely 5 stars from us x

The spectacle of being welcomed in, escorted upstairs by very polite staff to then have the different cuts of meat explained to you should theoretically imply you were on for one banging steak.. apparently not.. what a shame.. awful meat.. not cooked to my spec.....

Came through as a walk in for late lunch, been excited to try this place for sometime so was chuffed to be able to get a table. Staff were very friendly and attentive. Unfortunately was really underwhelmed with the food and left feeling really disappointed especially with price I paid for the dishes. Scallops for starter, 1 and 1/2 to be exact. The dish cold and the whole thing was so salty. Ribeye steak was a bit tasteless as well cold as well. Was hoping to give a better review but unfortunately couldn't on the food :(( Update... Had a great time on Saturday night with friends. We had a wine tasting followed by a meal. Would recommend the soufflé to start, not something I would normally order but it was amazing. We attended Upstairs At The Grill for my husbands birthday. They made it so special and unforgettable. The whole experience from start to finish was excellent and there were so many special touches. Firstly the decor is beautiful. Staff are friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. On top of that they also arranged a birthday card, a complementary cocktail and a complementary sweet for my husband to mark his special day. We would definitely recommend this venue again especially for a special occasion.

Fantastic high end restaurant with great steaks: a true, beautiful, grill. The sort of place that elevates the whole town. The interior design is special, sumptuos and elegant. In the food dept, everything is delicious and I was positively surprised by the black forest gateaux, pictured. The service is excellent, from reception to waiting staff and make some time to visit the cocktail bar prior to your dinner! The drinks are very good and it has a great atmosphere. Tip: book in advance

I have worked in the restaurant industry for 8 years. This place is perfect. Genuinely can't fault it. Wine selection is brilliant. Food is sensational. Staff are what make a restaurant though and these guys know their stuff. Best place I have been to in a decade (and I have been to some places double the price!) 100% will be my top of list places to visit.

Excellent restaurant. Very meat-focussed, but that's no surprise from the name. Therefore, if that's what you're after then it's one of the best - but all options are tasty, well-prepared and presented. A top place to visit.

This restaurant is fantastic, excellent service, especially the maitre de, food is excellent, atmosphere perfect, background music brilliant and the correct level to still talk and be heard!! We will be returning every time we visit Chester!!!!

Beautifully designed place for real! Too bad they are not making as good all of their dishes! For me, this restaurant was a bit overprice for what it offered. I ordered The fish of the day, and it was salmon. It was a small and not better than what I could make in the airfryer at home.. The Sunday Lunch looked good though, but all the rest looked a bit overrated.

Food was amazing, and Richard, along with all the staff made this a most memorable experience for us. Cannot rate this restaurant too highly for food and service, looking forward to our return visit. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Very warm welcome and we were seated at a nice table on the terrace. We ordered 2 roast beef dinners and after 10-15 minutes our food arrived. Very nicely presented but looks can be deceiving. We both asked for our beef to be served pink and unfortunately mine was well done, I could tell they had over cooked mine as my Nans beef was beautifully pink. However the amount of fat for 2 slices of beef was not acceptable. The roast potatoes were dry and seemed like they’d been sitting for a while under lights however this wasn’t possible as it was only 1:20pm (ish) The Yorkshire pudding again were dry even with plenty of beef jus added. We both felt very disappointed especially as it had been recommended. When asked during our meal if everything was okay, I did mention about my disappointment and that the beef was served well done. The gentleman asked if I’d like a new meal but it was too far into our meal for this to be an option. We asked for the bill straight away after finishing and the lady brought us the bill and asked how everything was. I explained everything above and her response wasn’t as should be. She assured us the beef was the best quality and we should have mentioned our concerns during our meal. However I can assure you the beef was not the best quality and we did mention during our meal. Another gentleman then brought a second copy of our bill over and mentioned something had been taken off as an apology. We looked at the bill to find our 2 soft drinks that totalled £5 had been taken off. I’ll attach a photo and as you can see I hardly ate anything and I had to go Chester markets afterwards for more food! To top off the experience as we were leaving no members of staff apart from the younger lad from Wrexham said good-bye, thank you, sorry or anything similar. I work in hospitality and have done for many years so I know for £23 the quality of the food should be significantly better and the way we were dealt with should have been different. *Top left was the amount of fat* *Bottom right was my ‘pink beef*
