Very slow service and sushi was mid

Food was nice flavour wise but ingredients lacked freshness particularly the seaweed which was quite chewy. Service was slow and not so friendly.

We were going to an event nearby and randomly walked past Umi and the menu looked nice from the outside. Menu was quite reasonable for sushi. We had the truffle ramen, salmon panko futomaki and avocado maki. All were delicious and we really enjoyed them. The ramen came very quickly too. Also the tables were quite unique and I think it would be nice to sit in one of the booths. One thing to note is that the food wasn’t served all at the same time. We didn’t mind this but just something to think about if that sort of thing bothers you.

Dived in here on my way to a gig, luckily they managed to squeeze us in, and I'm very glad they did. Fantastic food, great atmosphere. A genuine gem, so good I've already booked to go back.

Absolutely mind-blowing sushi, at incredibly reasonable prices. The staff, decor, service and food was all top-notch, couldn't fault any of it. We had 3 of the sushi rolls, and one of the maki sets. All the sushi was super fresh and extremely tasty - there were also some very unique combinations (the unagi and purple sweet potato roll was our favourite). Would highly recommend to anyone looking for sushi in Edinburgh, we will certainly be coming back if we're in the city again.

One of my favourite sushi experiences in Edinburgh. We've decided to visit UMI based on the positive reviews and interesting sushi selection, and we weren't disappointed. The sushi was delicious and well worth the price. We especially enjoyed the Unagi Ube Roll but everything we ordered was great. The staff was very friendly and forthcoming while the restaurant overall was cozy and well upkept.

Not happy with their food. The eel bowl I ordered as a main course which is almost £18 but only had 2 thin slices of eel. And the gyoza were obviously made from packaged frozen food, which costs almost £7, total rip off. No idea how they justify the price.

Expensive High Quality Sushi and relaxed and comfortable dining atmosphere, staffed with friendly waiters and waitresses. Had a good experience here - my wallet... not as much 😭

I am Japanese and love there! The quality of osushi, side dishes, the interior, and the hospitality of this restaurant remind me the real Japan :) Customers are elegant so you definitely can have a lovely time there. If possible, please don't use star anise with Chāshū;roasted pork. That makes it quite different from the Japanese flavour. Think ramen needs more supervision by Japanese.

HONESTLY- one of the best meals I ever had in my life. Started with a half bottle of sake. Spicy ramen, chefs cut of sashimi, and the home made wasabi- I felt like royalty. And it only cost £40. This must be heaven.

We had the best experience from this restaurant. The food was 10/10. The japanese ambience was amazing and of course the lovely and kind staff. If you are visiting Edinburgh soon, please do visit this place. You will really love it!

I had made a reservation at Umi for my girlfriend's birthday, but upon arrival, we discovered the restaurant was closed the whole day due to a power outage. We received no notification beforehand, despite driving 30 minutes and paying for parking. It was a major letdown and a significant inconvenience. Better communication from the restaurant could have saved us the trouble. Overall, a disappointing experience that tarnished what should have been a special occasion. Edit: I did not receive an SMS nor an email regarding this. I do see a missed single call from an unknown number 2h prior to the booking, which might be you, all you needed to do is draft a quick message, that's it.

Chicken broth ramen soup and their Chirashi don are definite must-tries here. While there can be slight variations in food quality at times, the service consistently remains excellent.

Came across this place while walking around, restaurant was busy but we managed to get a table. Food, service and atmosphere - 😍 Servers were absolutely lovely and their attention to detail (esp. on a busy night) was impressive.

The staff were so delightful and welcoming. The food was fantastic! Not often you get great quality and quantity of food. The Umi Signature Paitan Ramen is especially good! The California Cheese roll is also an exception starter.

10/10 experience. Booked for a romantic eve in Edinburgh and received a cosy private booth, service was fab and everyone was super friendly. Crudo, sashimi and sushi rolls were the best I’ve had in the UK. Thanks guys!

Fabulous evening at Umi. The food was exceptional - my daughter has lived in Japan and while no expert I've been lucky enough to eat in some big name and highly reputed Japanese restaurants in the US and UK and we agreed this was the best Japanese food we have ever had in the UK. My hot stone fried rice and mushroom bowl was enough for a whole meal, Miso was excellent, the teriyaki aubergine is delicious if very sweet, we also had Charsu Ramen and Karai chicken. The tempura banana desert dish was magnificent. Just as importantly the servers were charming and the booths were atmospheric and cute. Assuming this place may have moved as Castle street is in Newington not Stockbridge as Tripadvisor seems to think. Really not that expensive by Japanese food standards if you order selectively (note: Wagyu is not ordering selectively)

The food was absolutely delicious, me and my partner shared a few of the sushi dishes together which were more on the expensive side but so worth the price. If you’re looking to try wagyu i can recommend the wagyu sushi its really good, light and has an interesting texture to it. As a person who doesn’t like mushrooms the shitaki that comes on top just add so much flavour to the sushi its just a perfect bite of food. The service was great very friendly but i think the call buttons weren’t working for us for some reason, other than that i have no complaints. We got to sit down in the downstairs area which has fewer tables and is a bit more private and quiet, has a nice little walkway and seats are surprisingly comfortable too. Id definitely return here and try one of their hot pots another time because the smell was literally mouth watering

I live in london and ive gone to a few bottomless sushi places and this beats them all, in terms of presentation it was perfect, sashimi on ice, rolls with on there own plates, orders coming out within 5 minutes it was the beat, although we came late the service was 5* didn’t expect much abd was blown away, thank youe for the host and waitress for making me and my girlfriend feel so welcome

A Japanese Cuisine?.... unfortunately, probably only in name. I was there with my girlfriend, encouraged by the high rating and great reviews. After eating, we wonder who wrote these positive reviews, ghost writers? We really like Ramen soups... but not in this restaurant. The first and the last time. Spicy Karaage Ramen - if you want to have diarrhea and abdominal pain, order it. We are very disappointed and feel terrible. Give a wide berth. The only big plus is the service.

Good food, but not high-end. Several small faults combined to be annoying. Tuna sashimi was served way too cold and in large chunks. Completely flavourless. The iberico katsu didn't have the depth of flavour or nuttyness you'd expect, although it was perfectly cooked. Portions are generous. Top dishes for me were the wagyu beef roll (amazing flavour) and chicken gyoza. The restaurant has an authentic vibe and is kept very clean. The bathroom was a bit messy due to the volume and carelessness of customers. It was Saturday evening and this place is very popular (busy). Tables are far too close together for comfort. It wouldn't be a place to come for a romantic meal or a private conversation. Better for a group meal. Nowhere to hang your jackets. The staff were efficient but not particularly friendly. Did I mention how busy the place is ? If you had a seat within ten feet of the door (that's about 7 tables) you were blasted with cold air every 20 seconds as customers arrived or left or some poor hopefuls were told it would be an hour before a table was free. Overall a good experience but not relaxing.

Wonderful Japanese food! Chairs/benches could be more comfortable. Close at 10pm but they put some pressure on you to make you leave as soon as possible so not the best.

What a great place for Japanese cuisine! As we were not able to decide between sushi and ramen, we had veggie sushi as starters and different ramen as the main dish. It was so delicious! Can recommend this place if you are looking for authentic and good food!

I've worked in restaurants for over 15 years, have eaten sushi in 2 continents and many nations and I've realistically never been happier about a restaurant. Enter a different reality, made of wood, stone, amazingly nice people, wonderful service and just heavenly food. Even if you're not a sushi enthusiast it's an experience you need at least once in your life.

Solid place for Japanese food but a bit on the pricey side. Would recommend the karaage, ramen and sake if you do go.

Easily some of the best Japanese food I’ve had in Europe. The Katsu-Don was rich and flavourful and a particular highlight, along with the spicy ramen - both dishes couldn’t get much better. Doesn’t hurt that the atmosphere and decor of the place is nice as well!

Great wee spot, the inside is very cute, and they’ve decorated it really well. Staff are friendly, and the food is tasty. Felt £14 for chicken ramen was a bit high personally, but it tasted good.

Umi is close to the university‘s gs campus, which is convenient for me. It's my favorite ramen place in Edinburgh! I fancy spicy food so I always order the Spicy Fried Chicken Ramen! Highly recommended!

I have explored many Japanese restaurants in Edinburgh but this new restaurant is mindblowingly good. Despite higher price point, the quality and freshness of the food was impeccable and they were not stingy on the portion size. The sushi rolls were creative and different from all the other sushi places in Edinburgh. They have their own special rolls with unusual flavours that work really well. My favourite place so far for sushi and sashimi (I haven't tried their ramen yet but I've heard from friends that it's not as good). I will definitely return for special occasions :) Definitely give the scallops starter dish a go. It was a party in the mouth!!!

Staffs are nice and welcoming, environment is very lovely too. I had spicy pork ramen and dragon rolls in different days but they are both amazing!!! Its been a very long time since i had nice Japanese food. The value is definitely worth the price!! Definitely will go back if i ever visit Edinburgh in the future!

Beautiful place! The food is great too! We went for a dinner with friends and they took us to another dining area downstairs which is very cute! Like an onsen spa feeling. The ramen that I ordered was not too spicy and tastes very good! I also recommend the aubergine miso and the veggie tempura. Staff were great too! Fast and excellent service.

Excellent and authentic Japanese food with some creative enhancements. We had sushi, edomame, and also unagi in a stone bowl (unagi donburi). Everything was delicius!

We have had Japanese food from all over the world, and this place ranks right up there with excellent food and service. The ambiance is also very comfortable and fresh.

Oh my goodness. I have my favourite Japanese spots in Edinburgh but this may now be the top. Wagyu beef tataki? Epic Japanese mayo? Beautiful sashimi? A twist on many beautiful Japanese dishes - check! You won’t be disappointed and to top it the restaurant is gorgeous and the location SO central! Great for going pre/post gigs at the Queens hall or theatre trips to the Festival Theatre. We WILL be back and we can’t wait to try other menu items! Thanks for opening!

Delicious food in wonderful surroundings. We find it because our daughter's colleague, a serious foodie, had recommended it, and he was not wrong. Smooth, fast, attentive service and fabulous food. The aubergine was a particular stand out, and the sizzling rice bowl is definitely worth the experience

Food is high quality and tastes amazing, the staff are very friendly, especially the blonde lady. The decor is also somehow traditional, somehow modern and very cute. Even the plates are a thing of beauty. Such a good addition to the Newington area.

WOW! Absolutely amazing food. We just randomly came across this walking around from Old Town area in Edinburgh. It’s super nice inside with modern clean design. The food was incredibly fresh and delicious. So glad we stumbled upon this gem. Highly recommend!

Myself and friends. We had a lovely meal and waitresses were lovely. One of the waiters who attended to us when questioned about gratuity as they added it on automatically said are you just going to give us a fiver. Very cheeky and we got two wrong Bill's so we just gave around a fiver tip. He then came out into the street, outside the restaurant and challenged us, saying we were being disrespectful to him and staff. We said we did not tip him as he was rude. We had spend a good bit as well and he didnt know our circumstances. To be embarrassed and questioned like that is so unprofessional and it had put us going off again.

Sister restaurant of the nearby Kenji Sushi. Small place down some stairs in Stockbridge, easily missed if you don’t know to look for it. Not much room for larger parties but for smaller ones it’s okay. Traditional Japanese design in the restaurant with lanterns, sliding doors and wooden seating/tables. Staff were pleasant however there was a newer member of staff who was a bit slower in clearing away dishes and bringing us our bill. Thankfully we were not in a rush. Ramen and sushi were both good quality. Only small thing about the ramen was the egg hadn’t been cut in half so was more difficult to eat. Chirashi don was tasty and the fish was fresh. Average prices for sushi in Edinburgh with a wide range of choice of sushi as well as starters, hot food and other dishes.

It's not very authentic. Tried it twice, disappointed twice. I've eaten in a lot of Japanese restaurants in Asia and this does not measure up.

Delicious sushi and would happily return. Service was under pressure on a busy Saturday night so we received our items a little more spaced out than I would have liked and I was served very melted ice in my drink. But nothing that would put me off, food was great.
