Beautiful looking pub, clean and tidy in the seating area. The service was extremely slow, what we thought would be a quick dinner was a 3 & 1/2 hour stint! No explanation or apologies from staff. We were just left to wait. 4 out of 9 food orders were wrong, 2 desserts were brought out and then it was a 30 minute wait for the rest. The food was on the expensive side and it arrived average at best. The toilets were dirty and overall we left unimpressed. I've never wrote a negative review before but I feel this place needs improving, it's has the potential to be nice but needs a lot of work.

We visited the Ty Mawr today (01/04/24) and sadly had a pretty negative experience. After going for a morning walk with some friends we decided we'd try for an early lunch around midday at the Ty Mawr before the lunch time rush arrived. When arriving we were greeted by the doorman/manager for that day and politely asked if there would be any room to squeeze a larger party in for a light bite to eat. We had anticipated it would be busy and planned to sit outside so the children could play. His initial response was that they were full and wouldn't be able to accommodate us, and when asked if we could eat outside he also said no. When walking through the restaurant to use the toilet it was clear they were far from busy. There were multiple empty tables, including a large one near the bar area. We enquired further whether it would be possible for us all to sit there if not reserved as that would fit us all, however his response was still no. His explanation was that it wasn't so much the seating that was the issue but that he didn't want the kitchen staff to manage a big order of food as they had lots of other bookings that day. In many ways I understand this, however my issue is more with the gentleman's demeanour and attitude towards us. When I tried to speak to him politely, he spoke over me, he was condescending and was generally quite rude. He persistently pushed the point that it was in fact, me that 'didn't understand', and was actually quite hostile in dealing with me. Additionally, the bar staff appeared miserable and the general atmosphere was dour. On the whole it was a very un-welcoming experience and we felt like an inconvenience. I understand that as a larger party with no booking it genuinely may have been too much to fit us in with other bookings planned. So I would advise any one in future to always book with this venue as they don't seem hugely adaptable. However, there's a way in which you can explain this that can be far more hospitable and generally nicer. (It doesn't hurt to be nice!) At the end of our interaction the manager told me to complain if I had any issues, so hence this review. I would welcome a response.

They've got a real problem with their drains, it smells in the whole restaurant and bar. They'll tell you it's the fields but it's been the same every time we've been and it's a sewage smell. The food is decent. They'd given our table to.someone else so we had to squish in around a table in the bar which was not really suitable.

Roughly fifteen years ago, when I was an idealistic twenty-something, I used to go here regularly with friends. It had an amazing atmosphere, stunning views, and a vast array of quality food and beer options. Today (April 1st), I was left feeling foolish. My wife and I recommended it to friends as we were in the area, and the taste the experience left in our mouths was as bitter as their once excellent selection of real ales. Firstly, at 12pm on a bank holiday, we had the audacity to go here for lunch. They seemed utterly indignant that we should want food and they flat-out refused to serve us. They had a large booking over an hour later, so declined on that basis even though it was a food order that would have gained them a few hundred pounds. Could they not turn around some fish and chips in that time? Anyway, we decided to at least stay for one drink… The staff were utterly miserable and when I asked the girl behind the bar for two drinks and some crisps, she looked at me like I’d put dog stool in her morning coffee. Is it that unreasonable to ask for a beer, a cider and two packs of crisps? Who knows?! Maybe she interpreted my order as micro-aggression or something. The manager was sneering and wildly defensive when my mild-mannered friend challenged his decision not to serve us. I’m still waiting for them to contact me to say it had all been an April fools gag, but alas, I don’t think that call will come any time soon.

We visited the Ty Mawr today for some refreshment after a good bank holiday walk with friends. We had booked for drinks, however the walk had taken a little longer than anticipated, so a few of our friends went to the bar to order a few light bites from the menu. However they were told that because we were a drinks only booking, we could not order any food. One of my friends, clearly quite taken aback explained she was pregnant and that she could really do with some food, to which the manager actually raised her voice and rudely refused once again. I could have understood if it had been explained that they were booked out for lunch and/or the kitchen did not have capacity for us, however no such explanation was offered. I have visited the Ty Mawr many times before and have had plenty of fantastic meals there and have always been well looked after, so this was hugely disappointing, and a really poor show of hospitality from the staff with a total lack of respect shown for their customers. Regrettably I will likely think twice before visiting with friends again.

Really yummy Sunday lunch in a nice, traditional setting. Lovely countryside views outside and a good amount of parking. Service was very good - friendly. And price was reasonable.

Excellent home cooked food, old school pub with fire, pets welcome. Great for families, never had a bad meal. Staff very friendly and remember regulars.

Disappointing experience at Ty Mawr. Upon arrival, we were informed they were short-staffed and couldn't seat us. Given the welcome from other patrons, it felt more like they weren't interested in serving non-locals. 2 stars.

We ate here after the Wales /Italy rugby match as the town restaurants were fully booked. Glad we did as the service was excellent, the meals hot, with good size portions, and the restaurant wasn't rammed. Furthermore, ( ideal for Bagabargain) there was 30% off main courses which was an added bonus. Although we couldn't see it at night, apparently the view across Cardiff from the Ty Mawr is something special.

First class reception on arrival. Excellent waiting staff and good service. The food was presented well, hot and tasty.

We came to a wedding and very disappointed with the food and service, while we were waiting for food to be served my husband attempted to get a drink was told very abruptly “to go and sit down you’ll have to wait for a drink we are short staffed “ Not very professional and it’s a pub you’d expect to get served this was in the public part of the pub no bar was open in the wedding room. The chicken was very dry and the beef very chewy.

The food is always good and having the voucher was welcome. Felt sorry for the staff as they were very understaffed and overworked. They coped professionally and the experience would have been helped by more staff. Ps great chunky chips

This is the single worst experience my family have ever had eating out. My daughter is suffering medical issues due to be given food she is intolerant to, as staff were so incompetent they brought out and delivered the wrong meal to the wrong person, even after being questioned about what the food contained . The management had total disregard for their duties as a food provider. We left having been shouted at, refusal to refund any of the cost of the meal, and having paid for food we never actually ate. e were then told that this was actually the ould tell us. We are raising this issue with Food Standards agency. But please be aware before eating here about serious implications for those who suffer from allergies or intolerances. This establishment did not care about the health implications for a child.

Love this place, haven't been for over a year but it's still as nice as ever, fish cake and steak was cooked perfect, just a chilling environment, great catch up with friends

Overall the meal was nice, the Ty Mawr setting is lovely. The reason I deducted 2 stars was for 2 reasons, the first which is minor but I feel is worth mentioning is we had a family of 5 with 2 small children and another family came in about 5-10 mins after us on the next table actually had their food order taken before us. In the grand scheme of things it's not a big issue but when you have restless 3 year old you are trying to keep entertained and it's been about 20 mins since you sat down, I found it quite annoying at the time. The waitress was quite quick to deliver the drinks but walked off without asking if we were ready to order food and then waited nearly 15 mins further to take the food order. This should have been asked as soon as the drinks were delivered. The 2nd reason was the overall speed of service, we got meals nearly an hour after our booking time which is just far too long, especially when you have young children waiting for food. This wasn't from the order time which was already delayed anyway as stated above but because it took so long for the food to come out, we deliberately didn't order dessert whereby had the food been a bit quicker then we probably would have. That's not to say we didn't enjoy our meal because we did, the food was nice and I would definitely come back again but not in a hurry. Thanks

Nice atmosphere, pleasant staff. Was made aware straight away of one dish not available and that service may be slow due to staff shortages. I wasn’t slow and I felt it was fine. I was very pleased with my food as were other members of my group. I had a steak Americano which was beautiful and a lovely caramel sundae. Definitely eat here again.

The welcome was warming Very friendly staff Nothing to much bother Had afternoon lunch, nice and quiet atmosphere fabulous surroundings fantastic views. We had the patea for starters stunning! Steak for the wife, I had the scampi Presentation outstanding Food tasted absolutely lovely They aslo do gluten free We will definitely go there again...... Great food, nice beer, friendly staff and a great view out over the city and Severn estuary. The open log fire is a lovely feature on a cold winter's night.

Haven’t eaten at the Ty Mawr in years and we live locally however we had a 30% off mains voucher to use so I decided to book a table for four for a Friday evening and how pleased I did! The food was delicious the staff were extremely attentive and very friendly and there was a wonderful atmosphere especially as we were sat near the open log fire. We will be returning 👍

We arrived just after 1pm. Our food came an hour and a half later. We pre ordered our food and were not given our starters. We were told that the reason was only 2 people ordered starters so they just went straight into the mains. We booked weeks before but you woukd have thought that we had just turned up out of the blue! The man that served us was so rude and one of the meals which he was refusing to do ( we had changed a meal by txting) was absolutely awful! A piece of burnt batter hardly any fish. To top it off there was hair in my food. Ive never had such bad service and even though we were given 30% off the bill the experience was awful. There were 18 of us and none of us will be returning!

Relaxing surroundings with a log fire. Janine looked after us with a lovely welcome, she served us quickly. Thursday night was busy and nothing was ever too much trouble for Janine. We brought our dog with us, which made our evening extra special for us.

Great new menu, The mixed grill I had was of a very good sized portion and very well cooked and presented. I did not ho home hungry!!! Will be back soon.

We went on a very busy Sunday Lunchtime. The service was very good and the young lady who served us was excellent, she was very friendly polite and knowledgeable. The Sunday roasts were delicious Turkey & Beef juicy and flavoursome with a varied selection of fresh vegetables. Portion size was generous so much so we decided to share a pudding. Panna Cotta and cookie were perfect and the textures and flavours complemented each other. Will definitely be returning 👍🏻

Went for sunday lunch with family. A real old country pub atmosphere and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The food is very good and the service excellent. We have been on a number of occasions and i am sure we will be returning in the summer.

One of the best pubs around this part of Cardiff North with amazing staff. It benefits from amazing views of the Afon Hafren across to Bristol.

I attended a friend's Birthday party on the weekend. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The buffet food was freshly cooked and I have to give a special mention about the chips which were especially nice!

Wonderful food, atmosphere and service. My partner and I had sirloin steaks, fries, onion rings, peppercorn sauce and beef dripping sauce, all of which were delicious. Overall 10/10 experience - Thank you! We can’t wait to come back.

The bar man/waiter was so rude the way he spoke to the manager about my request really upset me. My husband had paid the bill however he never received the 30% discount that was on offer. I explained to the bar man and he spoke across me to the manager saying 'they've paid the bill and NOW they want 30% discount' I explained my husband was unaware and that we visit most Saturdays for food and drinks, either as a party of 3 of 5. He was abrupt, rude and very ignorant. My daughter hasn't eaten meat in 27yrs and was served the chicken pie and myself her veggie pie, even though she was mortified after eating a mouthful, we never complained as we love (no longer) the place. His attitude and reluctance to do anything about our request tells me that this person is in the wrong job, certainly should not be in hospitality. Such a shame that this has now finished our love affair with this lovely venue.

A fabulously tasty lunch out with the family. Fancied a day off cooking, and the roast was super - perfectly cooked pork, crispy roasties, yorkies ajd crackling plus lots of veg and a great cauliflower side dish. All demolished with big smiles, though we all left room for dessert! Despite a busy lunch service, we didn’t wait long for drinks, ordering or food. The waitress Marta (?) was really attentive, and great in suggesting kids food came first to keep them occupied. Luckily for us the sun came out, so we’ve literally just ended a lovely afternoon with a play on the climbing frame out front. The big folk enjoying 10mins peace ocerlooking the city as they played. A great way to end the Christmas break.

All 4 of us each had an excellent meal. The ham hock fell off the bone and was very tasty. Also excellent service. Our waitress had a lovely smile and was very polite.

Had a catch up with a friend who was visiting from New Zealand here, visited for some drinks and didn’t catch the name of the waitress however she had straight brown hair and was a younger woman, she came over promptly to ask if we needed anything and wanted to order and anything she wasn’t sure of she went to check straight away. Lovely girl! Will be returning :)

The food and service were good. Unfortunately our order came in 2 parts so one of the party was eating on her own. The restaurant did apologise and took the cost of that meal odd or final bill.

What a lovely spot for Lunch. My husband and I hadn’t booked but called in on our day out. We didn’t wait long to be seated in the meantime had a drink at the bar. Lovely homely relaxed atmosphere and seems very popular. The menu was extensive and they had specials and offers on as well. The food arrived promptly and was ample portions and piping hot. We both really enjoyed our lunch nice and tasty and reasonable prices. You must leave room for the delicious desserts ! We will most certainly be returning.

The atmosphere and the actual pub are great. Food is pretty lacklustre not bad but not amazing. Also I was given my food about 20 minutes before everyone else, thought that was pretty bizzare to be honest. 3/5: come for the atmosphere but probably not the food.

My son booked a table for four of us and paid a £20 deposit. When we arrived there was no record of him booking so we couldn't have a Christmas dinner.

Expensive but you get what you pay for!

The Ty Mawr, has an excellent selection of drinks to suit any customer. The beer on tap is very good and tastes fresh. The food is excellent and the service is great. The menu has plenty of options, food arrives at your table hot.

Another first time visit, immaculately kept old country pub on the outskirts of Cardiff , warm welcome by the waiting team , stunning Xmas tree and log fire made it more welcoming. The food was excellent . Huge beer garden for hot summer days with an outside bar and plenty of facilities for the kids in the play area . We both ordered the sausage and mash with streaky bacon and caramelised onion gravy 😋👍

Been three times in the last few weeks - consistently good! Large portions of good food; cask ales in great condition; excellent service from Ellie, John, Ronan (apologies for any misspellings) and the team. Lovely friendly atmosphere for locals or visitors alike. Only suggestion for improvement is more variety (a “specials menu” for food; and a guest cask ale - Brains Dark was popular as a guest a year or so ago; or how about Calennig for Christmas?)

Wonderful festive menu food last night, in warm inviting surroundings, with helpful, friendly staff

When we arrived out table wasn't ready and had to wait 10 minutes or so, which was fine because the bar had space and warmth from the fire. The quality of the food (Sunday roast) was very good. However, 2 ordered the trio of roast and the quantity of meat was small (especially for an adult portion) and one of the guests was missing carrots. Apart from that all the other guests were very happy with their choices.
