Tuktuk in Cardiff

Very nice little place, food was exceptional and the staff couldn’t do enough for you. There’s so many great Thai places in south Wales but the food here was a cut above.

Fantastic little restaurant! Brilliant fresh food!

After anticipating trying this place out for so long I finally went with my friends, we all love Thai food places and usually go to Chilli Basil (which is so delicious and authentic), but we thought we’d try TukTuk. We booked our table and we’re told on the phone we only had it for 2 hours as there was another booking after us and we agreed that was fine. The service here was appalling. We booked a table in advance and I turned up first. I was not greeted and no one was at the counter so I walked in and then said I have a booking and the man told me to sit in the big table. I sat there for about 20 minutes and not once did he offer some water, a drink or anything. I thought that might just be the way they do things there until I saw him greeting and talking to other customers walked in, offering them drinks, talking and chatting away. Anyways then my friends came and we sat for another 15 minutes. We were also aware that our table wasn’t available for long so we wanted to order but this whole time not one person asked us if we’re ready to order even drinks. Then my friend calls a waiter over and he’s like “you do know you only have this table for another hour..so you should start ordering” and we said we are ready to order we’ve been waiting for someone to take our order. Then he took our order, I asked for a jug of water on the table three times, didn’t receive it. My friend ordered a roti and had to remind them three times before receiving it. The lady who served our food was asking who’s dish is who’s but then just giving dishes to the closest person and not even attempting to give it to the person who is claiming their food. Then the ENTIRE time we were told every 10 minutes that we don’t have long and to “be conscious of the time”. After their slow service they kept rushing us to eat and get out basically which was a shame as we wanted to order dessert and told the manager it was a birthday too. Granted if there was no time for dessert we would understand but the constant rushing was very unappealing and honestly ruined the experience for all of us which is a shame because some of the food was really delicious. From the reviews here everyone has mentioned the exact same problems and I spoke to the manager too but it clearly seems like they don’t care and haven’t changed a thing which is disappointing. The man who ignored me when we came in was supposedly the assistant manager and the actual manager was slightly better but still very defensive of their part.

Cracking food and very friendly service in a local independent. Dishes were fresh and clean in terms of flavours. There was a great selection of hot and cold drinks, including superb teas and also mocktail options on the cocktail menu. There were several dishes sold out due to how popular this place is, so we will definitely return and try the options we missed this time!

There's a reason this place was full whilst so many restaurants along the road were borderline empty. Delightfully enthusiastic staff, varied menu, good drinks choices. Ordered the Gai Med mamuang and it was absolutely delicious. Superb depth of flavour and the perfect serving size. Will definitely be returning

*EDIT (replying to the owners reply) : I hardly would call omissions of ingredients in dishes presented (hint: the actual Thai names of those dishes on your Menu) as they are meant to be, as a an issue of "catering to diverse tastes". It is beyond disappointing to know that Tuk Tuk misrepresents amazing dishes that are altered to such an extent they are unrecognisable from what they actually are. I am half Thai and am a local to this area, and do not find this okay at all, and very disappointed that this is the epitome of representation of "Thai food". Over priced at that, considering the missing key ingredients! (I very much am lenient towards different styles of Krapaos and Tom yums, and am by no means a purist) Don't get me wrong, the food was tasty enough, but just wasn't what it was labelled as! I also forgot to add to the original review that even though I added that it was my partner's 30th birthday meal to the booking, he was not made to feel special in any way. Which obviously added to the disappointment of a £90+ meal. *original review 👇 A bit bland, tom yum missing magrud, krapao missing garlic and krapao, panang very bland (was anything seasoned with fish sauce?). A shame because expectations were high with all the reviews being good. Wing zap was good though! Reviews feel misleading as there is a sign up in the toilet which states: 5 pound tip for staff for a 5 star review This feels disingenuous and also stops genuine feedback..

10/10 customer service. Ordered online to collect. The sticky rice seemed way too sticky, had to cut it with a knife in order to seperate it. Apart from that it was very tasty

In Cardiff for 1 night went here as reviews great wasn’t that impressed not run by Thai people dry much an English Thai experience not authentic ordered salt and pepper chips mc,Cain are better. Not sure we will come back Following on from this places reply we did order adult Thai food as well as chips not authentic and overpriced I could say more about what had happened to other guests on another table but didn’t err on the side of caution

Have been trying to get a table here for ages now and finally got the chance to go today. It was well worth the hype. Friendly staff, amazing food, great portions, we will be going back. Everything was incredible. We ordered the Penang Curry, Jasmine Rice, and Crab Claw Fried Rice. They were all beyond expectations, the fried rice especially. The curry was delicious, perfect balance of spicy, creamy, and sweet. We were very happy with the portion sizes as well, you felt truly satisfied after finishing your meal. On top of that, we tried the peach iced tea which was phenomenal. And the homemade coconut and mango cheesecake. Once again, the portion size was very generous, and the dessert itself was amazing. I don’t personally like mango or coconut but would happily polish this plate off.

Had a wonderful time. Great service from very friendly staff. The food was delicious. Especially enjoyed the duck (Ped Makarm) and the duck spring rolls (Por Pia Ped). Will definitely visit again.

Yesterday visited the store with my colleagues in evening. Food was delicious and atmosphere of restaurant is amazing. I gave one star less because it wasn’t spicy. Otherwise great Thai food.

The place was really nice and cozy. The service was impeccable. My girlfriend is celiac and the person who took the order paid a lot of attention to explaining us the allergens of all the dishes. He also took great care of any gluten contaminations. The food was delicious and the price really good.

The only thing that spoiled it was the server trying to take our plates (when we clearly were not finished) and rush us as we only had 10 minutes left on our table. he actually stood there and waited for a bit then realised we were not impressed and walked away about 4 minutes later he came back. made us feel rushed and harassed a little

Thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to Tuk Tuk, cosy atmosphere, welcoming attentive staff and delicious food, well worth a visit. Will definitely be going back when we’re next in Cardiff. Booking is a must if you want to guarantee a table.

My partner and I are here with his parents when they came up to visit. We were warmly greeted warmly by one of the gents and sat down. The menu itself is quite small, but there is definitely more than enough to find something to suit you and the option to swap out the protein in the stir fry depending on what you fancy. I had the marinated beef starter which was beautifully tender. For the main I had prawns with red Thai curry which was incredible and the prawns themselves were so soft. The mango cheesecake as well was silky smooth and tasted incredible. The food was worth every penny. The staff were all wonderful as well, they were attentive but not overbearing which was perfect. It was one of the best meals I’ve had recently and the service was wonderful. I can’t recommend this restaurant enough

After reading all the glowing reviews here on Google my husband and I were excited to try TukTuk for the first time. We were left highly disappointed. The two dishes we ordered had chicken which was dry and chewy, not enjoyable at all. We also had a side order of sticky rice, half of which was hard. Not sure if this is due to over cooking or having just been left to dry out?? The only reason this review is getting 2 stars instead of 1 is because of the Tom Yum soup, which was, admittedly, delicious. Portions are very small for the price. Would not recommend and will definitely not be coming back.

Very disappointing. Wont be returning or recommending. On arrival we was told of many items was not available. One being sticky rice. What Thai place runs out of rice to start with. We had to ask on more than 2 occasions for cutlery and napkins whilst food was already sat infront of us. The chicken in the curry was very chewy like defrosted and then heated up to suit what dish you ordered. We sent our pad Thais back as the noodles was just a grease taste, very bland. There was no apology from the staff, was made to feel like we was wrong in saying what we did. When they eventually acknowledged us for the bill, the 3 mains we sent back was still being charged for. We questioned as to why and said we wasn’t going pay for it as we didn’t eat it. To then have the response off them…….out of respect you should pay! Honestly, so rude! Out of respect 😂😂 no respect for your paying customers. I’ve had much better pad Thais from a supermarket packet

Front of house staff 10 Ambience and decor 10 Food 7 (just) We had numerous dishes. The food presentation was lovely. The fresh vegetables were crisp and bright, cooked well. But. The beef was obviously a bought in frozen product. It had a thick gelatinous coating that wasn't appetising 'or' tastey. This beef was in all of the dishes we ordered. Chewy, not a nice texture at all. Shame. The Tom Yum soup was on the bland side. No real umami tang or flavour to speak of. Quite thin in flavour profile. There was plenty of chicken in the soup. But. It was very chewy indeed. No chicken flavour at all. It was obvious that it was defrosted to quickly in a microwave or a water bath... It had that texture to it. I wasn't going to write a review. But due to the proprietor not acknowledging me with a reply to thier questionnaire. I thought it best to advise others of our experience... Such a let down. As it wasn't the best experience due to the problems with the meat in every dish. If they rectify this problem. Then it will be a great restaurant indeed.

Went here on 16/02/2024. Made a reservation, it's a small restaurant, popular so best to book. Lovely place, nicely decorated. The 2 members of staff were very sweet and helpful but we felt a bit rushed when we finished especially from the male server.. So, to the food and drinks. All was explained, some items were unavailable but that did not detract. Drinks arrived promptly as did the Thai shrimp crackers, shortly followed by our other 3 starters, Wings, Calamari and Prawns, all delicious, crispy and extremely fresh. Be warned the food has a good chilli kick. We ordered the Chicken Masaman, Prawn Pad Thai, Gai Med Mamuang, and some jasmine rice. All were divine, and the aromatics and flavours were spectacular however, there was one issue. While the prawns were succulent and tender, we all 3 agreed on the 2 dishes with chicken, the texture was overcooked, chewy and dry. I assume they cook the protein separately beforehand and combine with the sauces and coatings, rather than cook it fresh which would make these dishes sensational. It is a pity. I also note that some beef, pork or lamb options would be helpful. Now this is the only negative, we would return but not choose chicken mains unless they change. We came from London for the weekend. They would get five stars across the board except for the rushing at the end and the way the chicken was prepared. Oh! One other thing, the fries are yummy, but the seasoning is definitely not.

8pm booking. Disappointed to be told when ordering. No tofu, no noodle soup, no sticky rice, no Thia green Curry, no somtum. Ran out of beer and ran out of white wine. The staff tried hard and were very apologetic and gave us 2 bottles of free wine. But food and service was very disappointing. No cutlery on the table and had to wait for it to arrive so food then cold due to how long the staff took to get us cutlery. The 4 men in our party ended up eating the starters with their fingers. I complained at the bar and the waitress said she was trying and that she was trying to do everything by herself. However saw 3 other staff in the restaurant. Service was very disorganised and we ended up feeling very sorry for the staff which isn’t really conducive for a night out. All in all such a shame some of the food was lovely but the 2 noodle dishes were greasy, overcooked and tasteless. This experience still cost £40 per person for starters main course and drinks. We wouldn’t go back.

I came here with my friend. The food was nice, we requested extra spice. We got it. There were two people attending to staff, the lady was friendly. The guy, not so friendly or helpful. When my friend showed a picture of a meal from IG (why she came), he said “when was that from? It’s been a whole year” dismissively. Didn’t bother to let us knowWiFi was available when we had network issues, but he was much friendlier to other customers. Explaining the menu and making suggestions without being asked. Service from him was not satisfactory, but the lady was sweet.

My girlfriend & I kept seeing video after video of this restaurant on social media. We both love Thai food & fancied a date night which made a visit to here a no brainer. Tucked away in a quiet corner of Cardiff, the minute you step through the door you feel welcomed. Small intimate venue with the music & lighting at just the right level. Friendly & polite staff, super helpful as my partner has an egg allergy & no question was too much. Generous portions of amazing tasting food is what you can expect. We arrived starving & left full without even having room for dessert. We were enjoying ourselves so much lost track of time & we almost missed our train. My girlfriend & I both agreed that it was the best Thai meal we’d ever had. We will definitely be back again in the near future.

Very nice food and cute restaurant. It is a small restaurant so must book & there are some bad tables (unfortunately we got one as a two)! It is very fast paced so not one for a slow catch up

First visit - really good food, nice atmosphere with friendly staff. The duck spring rolls were tasty and crispy. The Gai Med Mamuang was nicely balanced - spicy, but not overwhelmingly hot. Probably the most authentic Thai food we've had for a long time. All washed down with a couple of Chang beers. We will definitely return

Small venue, 28 covers, in a comfortable venue. All tour Thai favourites, £30 for starter, main, rice and a beer, so standard cardiff. I had deep fried large prawns (6), lightly crumbed and deep fried, along with a spicy chilli jam. Very tasty. Chicken Panang, nicely spiced, not too rich, worked well with jasmine rice. Lovely. My friend enjoyed both his dishes too. Service a little slow, but think a couple of new staff, so excused. Would recommend this for anyone wanting modern Thai food. On Crwys Road, just down from Death Junction.

Me and my colleagues had a fantastic meal here. Easily the favourite meal of the week we've been here. Great vibes, delicious food and a super reasonable price. The roti and spicy duck were my faves, but everything was so delicious. Wish I'd had room for pudding because that also looked spectacular (in a fridge on the counter).

We were very pleased with dining out here. I was on a waiting list that day as it’s clearly popular, I received a call later that day with the offer of a table. So definitely worth going on the waiting list. The service was really pleasant and the waitress and waiter were very attentive. The food came out very quickly and lived up to our expectations. This restaurant is for all occasions, I always bring my family here , celebrate birthdays. Service and food is second to none.atmosphere is fantastic.

Most tatsteless dosa I ever had in my life. It was such a big disappointment. There was no flavour to it and it was way too bland (and I don’t even eat a lot of spicy food but it was way too bland even for me ). The restaurant needs to cater to all needs they didn’t even ask if we wanted mild/medium/hot. By the time dosa was served it was cold as well. Chutneys served with it - 3 different types apparently all tasted same as they were tasteless too. Just they were of different colour. Also I felt dosa was made in ghee.. not everyone has a taste for ghee so if that’s what they are made in it should be clearly mentioned in menu. Overall I would rate it a big ZERO and had to pick one star as there is no option for zero stars 😂 There are so many better and cheaper places for dosa in Cardiff.

We visited on Saturday the 25th - we loved the experience! The friendliness of the staff was lovely and welcoming - happy to explain and make sure we were getting the cocktail we wanted. I ordered a Thai Basil Gimlet - and it was delicious! I had a side plate of battered squid to start which was hot and crispy, and then stir fried chicken with coconut rice which was sticky and the chicken was flavoursome. Due to how quickly my cocktail was drank, I moved onto a Singha which went down well. Loved Tuk Tuk and will definitely be coming back again!
