Fantastic food and friendly staff

We had dinner in the restaurant. Delicious food, both my wife and I were really impressed. I had three courses and got a second dessert it was so good. Very highly recommended.

Great experience. Called in with the kids on the off chance of a meal at 5.30pm on Good Friday. Despite obviously being busy the staff were so welcoming and went out of their way to accommodate us. The food was fantastic - the Great Mell Fell burger and homemade steak and ale pie were recommended and both absolutely delicious. Kids devoured their chicken chips and beans. Five stars - thank you!

Really nice stay... Rooms nice and staff were great.. I think the lady owner served us mostly and she is lovely. Food... fantastic recommend everything:) if I was really being picky.. hiden cleanliness could be a fraction better... couple of things were broken and set up a little awkward like mirror and electrical sockets. HIGHLY Recommend! As a solo female traveller using this as a stopping point on a long journey, I was SO impressed with this little Inn. The staff are incredible - accommodating and friendly - the food is delicious (well worth booking a table to make sure you can enjoy a lovely dinner), and the Inn itself is the perfect combination of quaint and modern. My single room was super clean with a gorgeous view out the window. I was comfortable, safe, and well taken care of. My only regret is that I didn't stay longer!

Stayed for a night with our dog, and can honestly say we will be back. Our room had obviously been recently refurbished and was amazing. Nice and warm, with heating adjustable. Lovely bathroom with shower. Tea and coffee facilities (with biscuits). Decent size TV. Bed was comfortable and even had a lovely faux fur throw on it. We didn't make use of the bar or restaurant when we arrived but we did have a breakfast - one Full English and one just toast (GF available) which was superb (7hrs later, I'm still full!) - I say one just toast, it was really 2 as there was enough toast for the dog to snaffle a couple of slices too. The owners are absolutely lovely (really sorry, I can't remember your names as I'm useless), and are currently refurbishing the main restaurant, but the bar is available for breakfasts and meals - and it is a lovely bar too. We've just been looking at the cottages online and are thinking of booking one for later in the year. Really can't rate it highly enough and can't wait to go back

Booked a celebratory family meal for 9 people, however the table layout was arranged for two adjacent tables rather than one, a bit disappointing, but this was at the request of the very bubbly waitress to make it easier for serving the meals. The service was excellent, and the food was fabulous. You would need to be very hungry to tackle the fish & chips, no-one quite managed it. I tried the homemade steak pie, which was very good apart from part of the crust being extremely overdone in parts. This was all washed down with a good selection of drinks, including a very nice real ale called Wainwright's. Overall, it was a lovely night, and I would definitely recommend it.

Only went gor food on two nights towards the end of our holiday.Food was great and staff very friendly.

Booked a table last minute on a Sunday with 2 hungry kids. Accomadated us no problem. Menu is choice is small but there is something for everyone including vegans. Friendly staff, nice beers and a cosy pub.

We had a fabulous meal here. We'd had a long day hiking and called to check availability we were unable to give them an exact time of arrival but they were so helpful and accommodating on the phone. When we arrived we were seated at our table the staff were lovely and welcoming and the food was really good.

Very enjoyable 3 day stay in a clean comfortable room. Great value accommodation in a very convenient spot for exploring the north-east Lakes -particularly good food, nicely presented and very tasty. Good chats with our hosts. We'll be coming again.

Stayed here 2 years ago on our way up to Scotland and as it was so good that time stopped here again doing the same journey. Great room, evening meal excellent, definitely recommend the steak and ale pie, breakfast perfect. We will definitely be back

Found this inn at the end of our holiday .Everything fitted in pleasant staff nice room even liked diesel the dog .Had evening meal which was very good . Breakfast next morning was a good English breakfast . Our only request would some toiletries .

Wouldn't let us eat outside so we went to the white horse. Why couldn't we eat outside? What a way to lose money. View and service was good otherwise. Nice place.

A decidedly average meal, poor customer service, bar shuts at 9pm and the bill is placed on your table, making you feel like it's time to go.

Called in this week one evening to see if we could order food to sit outside, got a resounding no! Went on to The Mill at Mungrisdale, no problem, food served outside. Went back for a second meal next day. Sorry Troutbeck but you are missing trade if that is your attitude!

Had a lovely 3 course meal here with my wife and daughter (and family dog!). Warm welcome from the owners, seated in the bar with all the other dogs who all got on well (most of the time!). All the food was fantastic, pate starters were really tasty with a nice sweet chutney, my wife had the falafels. Huge fish and chips (lots of them!) which was really well cooked with a proper tangy tartare sauce, no complaints about the steak and my daughter enjoyed her haloumi burger. Desserts were ordered after being given time to digest our huge main courses, my cheesecake was really creamy with a sharp mango sauce, sorbet was a bit unnecessary but I ate it anyway! We are annual visitors to the lakes but often find the food options disappointing, not here though so we'll definitely be back!

This was our first time visiting the Troutbeck Inn last night and it won’t be our last. The food was delicious , would definitely recommend the steak and ale pie, it’s the husbands favourite and he said it was one of the nicest he’s had. The desserts were great too. Could not fault the service, very efficient and attentive. Everyone was really friendly especially the owners who we got chatting to at the end of the night. Thanks for a lovely evening.

Overnight stay here was fantastic. Owner/couple running the inn were lovely, unfazed by my rescue having an accident. I was mortified they were reassurring and kind. We had fish and chips and were beaten by the size of the whale served up. Breakfast just as lovely. This will be our new stop off to Scotland. I will be recommending the Troutbeck to anyone and everyone. Thank you so much. PS rooms and beds lovely and comfy.

I’ll stick only to the facts here and leave my feelings about this experience for you to imagine. I booked a night here at very short notice on booking.com. I guess I booked at 9.30pm and got there just after 10pm. The booking was accepted and the details said I had to check in after 4pm with no mention of a latest check in. I was, after all, going to a pub. When I got there just after 10pm all the lights were off and I couldn’t get in so I didn’t really know what do to. I wandered round in the dark outside for a bit then called the pub number. A man answered the phone and I explained that I had booked half an hour ago and was there. He said something like - it’s very late. We close the doors at ten. Well how was I to know? No apology for me getting to a dark pub. No welcome. He gruffly told me he’d be there in a few minutes. He turned up five minutes later. Again no apology or welcome or explanation or smile. He just looked and sounded gruff and fed up. I told him I too had a property on booking.com and explained that if he didn’t want late bookings he could set his property to not accept bookings within a 24 hour period. He was grumpy again so I said - look I’m tired. The booking was accepted but I don’t feel very welcome here. He said. You’ve just got me out of bed. Well how did I know I’d got him out of bed? I explained that I thought it was ok as booking.com had accepted the booking. He said if I didn’t like it I could go somewhere else as I was having a go at him - and repeated that I’d got him out of bed. I said I’ll stay here but I don’t feel welcome. He said so stay somewhere else then. I said ok but how do I know you’ll give me a refund. He said. I’ll give you your refund. So I said ok I’ll go then. Imagine saying that to a solo female traveller who’s had her booking accepted - at 10.15pm at night. In the dark! The whole interaction took about three minutes and I then sat in the car and wrote the conversation down so I didn’t forget the details. I immediately called booking.com to let them know what had happened. You can tell how good a business is by how they deal with things when they go a bit wrong - and this was terrible. Oh and I haven’t had the refund or a reply from the business from an email I sent. You make your mind up as to wether you want to stay somewhere like this.

Stayed one night, dinner in the evening and breakfast in the morning. Couldn't fault the dinner, a tasty, meaty pie, lovely chips and veg. Delicious pudding. Food cooked and presented very nicely. Helpfull, cheerful staff. Breakfast was also plentifull. Would defo eat here again. Upstairs the room was large and well equipped, bathroom clean and tidy. It was quiet and peacefull. The only thing which spoilt our stay /sleep, was the knacked bed - very low to the ground which made it difficult for 2 old fogies to get up from, and, a mattress with a dip in the middle, so even laying on the edge once the other person gets in, you both roll down to the middle of the sunken dip. Apart from the bed, we had a most pleasent stay. Would eat here again, food most excellent

Customer service was poor, no eye contact, no friendly face. Evening meal was good and breakfast was good, although asked for a glass of water as diabetic and can’t have fruit juice, you would think I had asked for a pot of gold. Rooms were clean , not impressed the TV didn’t work, no shower gel in container in shower. Over the Last few months we have needed to stay overnight in a pub/ hotel to break our journey up ,back from Carlisle, we didn’t feel welcome and wouldn’t stay again!

5 star experience from the welcome received to the food we ate. Friendly couple that couldn’t have worked any harder, from serving the busy bar and restaurant to chatting to everyone, nothing was too much trouble. Odd that bar closed early 9.30 but it did mean we had a quiet early night. Hotel room was functional and clean, slept well. Food was extremely tasty from evening meal to a delicious breakfast (other than the veggie sausages- change the supplier- you know they are like cardboard 😂😂) other than that couldn’t fault it. Even down to decent size mugs in room for hot drinks and decent biscuits. Keep doing what you are doing - it works. Thank you for suggestion of Gin distillery 👍 spot on 👍👍 Negative reviews could be as only run by a couple not a team of a dozen and couldn’t possibly cope with tables of 20, we certainly saw tables of 6-8 people 🤷‍♀️and it worked.

Most enjoyable 3 night stay we found the staff and owners very friendly and comfortable, the rooms were clean and comfortable and we were able to take our little dog with us, would visit again.

Lovely beer garden, food is very nice, especially the chicken tikka curry. Not far from the camp site Gill Side Farm, so was handy to walk there.

I absolutely enjoyed the Steak and Ale Pie (packed with lots of meat), but the atmosphere and friendliness of the staff, made me feel very comfortable and landlord even picked me up from the local campsite. Above and beyond. Fantastic food and lovely surroundings.

Great Inn and a great location in the North Lakes, we stayed a couple of nights in a dog friendly room, it was very nicely presented, the food was excellent and Alan and Nicole are really nice and friendly hosts. A great location for Blencathra, Skiddaw, Mell Fells, Ulleswater. Just off the main A66 but we heard no traffic at all. We'll certainly be back when we need accommodation in the North Lakes. I stayed in little Mel for a week, I went in for food a few times, always great quality, the staff are helpful and friendly, highly recommend if your nearby but book to avoid as it gets busy

Visited here in May this year & it was brilliant- food, drinks, staff, atmosphere, everything. We were seated In the bar with our dogs who were given water & treats. Perfect! We visited again recently, in September & were sadly rather disappointed. My meal( sea trout) was beautifully cooked & delicious, as last visit. No complaints whatsoever. However, my partner had a very mediocre burger with fries which looked & tasted like microwave ones, surely not! He had loved his steak & ale pie last time & it was home cooking to perfection so was rather disappointed at the difference. We asked for passion fruit cheese cake from the menu, for dessert, as had it before & it was gorgeous to be told " We are not doing that now, as we can't get it!" Why not make it?! We asked if cheese & biscuits were available( not on the menu to be fair) told be told" We don't do that" & finally asked for coffee to be told " We are not doing coffees- machine broken!" The older lady who served us in the restaurant was very pleasant & friendly but completely unapologetic about the lack of certain things from the menu. Almost as though that was a good thing! Maybe it was a one off bad night & I have recommended this place to friends on the strength of our first visit which was faultless.

Quaint pub near the campsite at Gill Head Farm. They sell nice ales from very clean lines and have a great outside seating pods.

I stayed at the Troutbeck Inn for 2 nights in September 2021 and it was excellent. The location inbetween Ullswater and Keswick was absolutely perfect for me. The hosts are very welcoming and friendly. The rooms are exactly as depicted and very comfortable. The food and drink is of a high quality and well priced, I had dinner both evenings and the fabulous breakfast both mornings. This meant that I could settle down and relax for the evening with a well deserved glass of wine after walking all day!

On Tuesday, 7th September, I attempted to book this hotel through their on line portal for the Thursday, 9th September. However, I saw that it stated that I could phone the hotel to book. When I phoned, I was told that all bookings should be made online. So I attempted to book online. But the online information didn't state whether the available room was a twin or a double. At a cost off £135 per night, I wanted to make sure that the room was a twin as I was booking for two blokes. So I again phoned the hotel and spoke to the same woman who again tried to direct me to the online booking. I explained to her that the online information was that I could phone the hotel and book in this manner. With this this she stated that she was very busy and could I phone back in the morn ing when she would be able to check if the room was a double or twin. I said that I wanted to book now so as not to miss the last available room. She stated that she was by herself and was too busy, serving food to customers who were 'looking at her funny'. To me this attitude and customer service was unacceptable. Although I accept that she was probably busy, why didn't the member of staff say, 'Can I take your number and I will call you back when its a little less busy'? We turned up without a reservation and they were fully booked. The manager did a work around to fit us in. The food was amazing, never seen a piece of fish so big and fresh. Would definately reccomend and make sure you book, just in case.

We stayed here for two nights and ate in the restaurant for one of them. Rooms were clean and good value for money. The children's room was spacious. Food was good, but they are pushed for staff, so you need to book to avoid disappointment.

Had one of the burgers but it was a bit pink for me, I understand that some people would like that but I don't. Wife had the steak and ale pie and that looked brilliant, should have gone for that

We chanced our luck and cycled here without booking a table - big mistake! It looked quiet but apparently all tables inside were booked and it did get busier. We ordered from the bar and sat outside just as it started tipping it down with rain. We tried our best to shelter under a sun parasol. Got a little wooden booth when a family left and stayed for another beer, ordered a pizza too (outside snack menu). Beer 10/10, pizza very cheap and cheerful 4/10 (£12 each!!😲- captive audience as nowhere else near). Staff and service were great though.

Managed to get a meal by going early (5.30pm) otherwise the very popular pub was fully booked. Great food and great service plus cold lager! What's not to like?

Despite it being high season and the pub being pretty busy, we had really good service here and a lovely meal. Tasty three courses and resonably priced, a good selection of ales and all of the staff were chatty, helpful and keen to please.

post script I see the hotel responded to my review below with some extremely untruthful comments. In particular I note they say we caused a 15 year old girl to cry this is not only untrue but if you look at other reviews you will see this same accusation was made against another reviewer. This reviewer had however seen the girl in question laughing with the chef when she was meant to be in tears! In our case it was rather than take issue with the younger member of staff serving that I approached the manager to raise my concern. ( It is frankly shameful of them to use a minor in this way) Hate to have to write a bad review but we had a really awful time. Last minute booking for one night stay. Didn't read any reviews! Hotel is in a good location and the deluxe room we booked at £130 good size and clean. The stay became a catalogue of misinformation and unhelpful (poor) customer service given with a smile that was at odds with the actions and didn't seem genuine. Eventually enough was enough a final straw was reached and I raised a concern. We were accused of being rude reading 'the wrong' hotel reviews whilst at dinner. (We hadn't actually been reading them but admittedly had begun to discuss wishing we had! ) The lady who we understood was the owner said she wanted us to leave her home. ( Frankly we would probably happily have obliged but having had wine with our meal it really wasn't an option!) We retreated from the unpleasant restaurant atmosphere to our room and did then look at some of the reviews. The penny began to drop. Our quite bizarre experience followed a theme, if its all going well its all fine, if you have any concerns they don't seem able to address these in a professional manner. The response to our concern was the lady being very emotional and giving a completely inappropriate and quite aggressive response. Small independent hotels are usually very good with flexible and customer focussed service. responding to customer concerns is at the heart of customer service. In case of this hotel it seems any negative feedback is taken personally. This is very much the crux of other poor reviews and the comments we read very much reflected our experience. We paid to stay in a 'hotel' and had expectation of a reasonably professional level of service, we didn't book into the lady's home. We are like most people mindful of the particular circumstances that the hospitality sector has and continues to face including potential shortages; an occasional apology and a helpful approach normally gets everyone (staff and customers) through. A little honesty with and respect for customers would go a long way in improving the hotel, it costs nothing and doesn't need to be in short supply . We would never return here and suggest that potential travellers read a selection of reviews on different sites before booking.

Great service and great quality food

Nice place limited spaces need to book early, but they do a takeaway service and you can sit there grounds and eat.

DON’T BELIEVE WHAT THEY SAY ON THE PHONE!!!! I called in the morning before 12.00 to ask would it be necessary to book for this evening as we would be walking over a mile to have the food. The staff member advised that it wouldn’t be necessary at all to book and they will be lots of tables outsides. Unfortunately when we arrived we was told by other annoyed guests who’d done the same that pub were fully booked and couldn’t do food. I went inside to speak with a member of staff to explain that I have rang this morning to ask if I needed to book to be told it wasn’t necessary at all! I explained this and the women came out with the patronising statement of there’s nothing much I can do about that “sweet pea”, Wouldn’t offer to accommodate any other food option and didn’t give any empathy regarding the situation despite having already phoned this morning request did we need to book. 0/5. Won’t be returning and will recommend The White Horse down the road one mile who accommodate us to complete max after what we’d had to deal with.

Stopped here for a bite to eat yesterday (Sunday 22/8). I had the steak & ale pie and my wife had the mushroom risotto. The steak pie was quite probably the best steak pie I’ve ever eaten. It was crammed of beautifully tender steak that literally melted in your mouth. My wife claimed her meal was also fantastic. Would we go again - damn right we will

Lovely pub with friendly staff and good choice of food and beer. Well worth booking in advance for meals on weekend however they do a takeaway menu which isn't too bad. We opted for pizza which was a bit overpriced for what you got but not much choice within walking distance. Restaurant menu looked lovely. Would happily go again but book next time.
