Travellers Friend in Redbridge

We were visiting friends over Easter weekend. Popped in for a quick drink. Really friendly bar staff with a nice atmosphere in general. We did not eat but the menu looked good.

We booked this lovely pub for my dad’s 83rd birthday meal. I won’t bore you with the details, but I had some concerns on arrival. Katy (asst manager) was an absolute angel. She pulled out all the stops to reposition our table, relocated the singer & kindly provided a heater (she noticed my elderly parents were a little cold). Would absolutely go back again. But special credit goes to Katy - she is fabulous & an absolutely amazing host!! Thank you Katy for going above & beyond to make my dad feel special on his birthday. Very much appreciated!! X

Well well well... what can be said about The Travellers Friend. Having often driven past the establishment, which is within walking distance from my home, we finally had an occasion to bring friends to the pub on a sunny Sunday afternoon and it's safe to say we were all blown away. A table of 9 is no small task, but the staff were incredibly attentive, nothing was too much to ask and we all felt completely comfortable to ask for anything we required. The food (or the Roast Dinners at least) is phenomenal - each of us had a different item from the menu and the meats were expertly cooked, plenty of vegetables/potatoes per plate and the sides were to die for - a choice of pigs in blankets, cauliflower cheese etc (all the good stuff) and *massive* yorkshire puddings - top drawer. Drinks selection is good, wine list covers all bases and the atmosphere is second to none. Without a doubt, the best Sunday Roast in the area local to Wanstead, South Woodford, Woodford etc. that I've experienced and I intend to bring as many friends and family here as possible! A true hidden gem to shout about.

Great dog-friendly spot for a Sunday lunch! I always appreciate when there are non-roast items available on a Sunday as I was able to get the sausages and mash while my partner got the pork roast. Both arrived quickly and piping hot - staff checked several times to make sure all was well and offered more gravy / Yorkshires which were again brought out quickly and steaming hot. All of the meat was high quality and well prepared and the seasonal greens were really tasty. All of the staff was so friendly and drinks were good - don’t hesitate to visit!

Attended the Traveller for a wake. The staff were very nice and helpful. The food that was served for the buffet was very nice

What a lovely place. We was looking for somewhere local that was dog friendly and this place did not fail to impress us. From the warm welcome to the bar on arrival to the service of the light bites we had with our drinks, everything was perfect. Food was great,atmosphere relaxed and plenty of space around the table in the bar. Everything was very well presented. This has now gone on or list of places to visit more often and we are looking forward to going back and eating in the restaurant section. 5⭐️ for us and a 🐾 up fro our Dixie Ted.

Good local pub. Friendly and well kept. They honestly couldn't be better with my 85 year old Mother-in'Law who is in a wheelchair. We are regulars for Sunday Lunch and they treat her like a Queen.

We went here for the Sunday roast and booked before hand. The pub itself looks lovely and is dog friendly but for the Sunday roast we were sat in an eating area in front of the kitchen. The food was lovely and service was very good as well. My only down side for me was the Roast Trio should come with crackling and mine didn’t. We did get extra roast potatoes and gravy though. Also I do think the coffee machine sounds like a jet engine and probably could be away from folk eating but that was only a noise towards the end of the meal.

Love this pub…. We often drink here and the staff are amazing, such genuine people who always greet you with a smile. The food is quality, it’s genuine food & not microwave food. Sourced locally and real food. Today we had bangers and mash and all I can say is OMG. It was simply divine. The best food in the area & the beer is also the best. These guys know how to run a pub. Love this place.

We are regulars to this pub and we decided to hire a room here for our engagement party in October. Staff were very accommodating and friendly. We had a great night and they even had a 80s band which was great fun too. Highly recommend. Thank you so much

Molly and the team were brilliant at helping my book my event here. They made a genuine difference and I highly recommend. One of the easiest booking experiences to date.

Cumberland sausages and mash are to die for, but not so much the vegan ice cream.

Food was ok, nothing special, seemed to be a lack of salt in the dishes.. and vegan ice cream, big no no for me, why is it that I live in a democracy, but vegans get special treatment over majority normal people, # give me proper ice cream please!

Have been here on a few occasions. The dining room at the rear has been designed to a high standard, very comfortable seating and restaurants standards. We came here for Sunday lunch which was a little over prices for what you get. However the burger and chips were very good. The rest of the pub is also well kept. Service has always been good and staff quite chatty and polite as well as drinks and food menu fitting for the style of place. There is a lovely outside seating area to the side of the building which is great for when the sun is out. They also have a good range of beers including a few craft beers, ales and wines.

Molly helped us arrange our christening party in the upstairs private room and it was so easy I'd do again. It was simple to book, easy to arrange food, and she was so helpful in the day. The food was delicious (mini burgers, sausage rolls, wings) and we had our own barman for the event with the private bar. Thanks for a great party!

i had a booking for 23 people on the 3rd September. I spoke to Molly via email and she was extremely helpful. the 2 girls servicing us were really attentive, we were all really impressed, the lady at the bar was also very good. the food was fantastic it was a 10/10 experience, i cant wait to come back.

Service was great and what they've managed to do considering the location is impressive. If this was my local I'd be happy enough. Ironically though, I'd probably say it's not worth travelling to. Good for a stop off AND dog treats on the bar!

An Attractive pub. Great features. Welcoming. The team here work very hard. Good selection of cask ales available and a decent pub menu. Dog friendly.

My girlfriend was meeting my parents for the first time so the pressure was on to book a good place and I'm so glad I booked here. From calling and making the booking to getting there the service was personable and friendly. I spoke to the manager when calling and booking and she wanted to make the day special. They have a beautiful outdoor area aswell as lovely interiors. On the day to my surprise a barmaid called Katie was briefed about the occasion and kindly showed us to our table which came with an unexpected surprise included. I love a baby Guinness and they had run out of the "correct" ingredients but Billy worked his magic and made it happen. We had a great time and all the staff were exceptional. Katie, Billy, and the rest of the staff were all amazing. We had a great afternoon and thank you much.

A great find, about 10 mins walk from the tube and an absolutely lovely welcome. Molly and her team make you feel at home and the Garden space is great too. A nice place unwind and try a Portobello beer or two!

Awesome food, awesome service. Jelous for anyone who's local it is. They have a nice beer garden and you can see the chefs making your food which speaks volumes. Highly recommended. The selection on tap wasn't really to my taste but that's a personal preference. Great place and I'd highly recommend to anyone.

What a shambles of a pub. Went for some nice after work drinks and then one of their employees decided to attempt to bottle one of us because ‘he can’t handle his drink’ and then we got asked to leave. As we was leaving the employee threatened to stab us with his ‘big shank (knife)’ and continued to aggravate the situation. How embarrassing?! What has the world come to.

Nice venue for dinner away from main bar area. Small menu but good choices available. Excellent food. Good wine list too.

We haven't been for a while, as fed up with loads of red cabbage and not much else. Went today,I declined the red cabbage. Two slices of beef (fatty and not much meat) one strip of carrot, four tiny roast potatoes, one Yorkshire and almost raw spring greens that were inedible. Very friendly people, but food has deteriorated badly and we were all very hungry when we left. Going to have a MacDonalds!!

We had our wedding reception at the Travellers Friend in late January. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. The food was excellent and very good value. The team really made our day feel special. Will definitely visit again if we're in the area. Great job guys!

Met friends for a meal here as we've done a handful of times in the past 3 years. I like the open kitchen and the chefs look professional. Food was excellent quality and the service provided by Katie was A*. They always have a good selection of ales which I like too. Bill came to around £50 a head but we did have quite a few drinks

As Gastro Pubs go, this one is in the top tier, well worth a visit.

Sunday roast is tasty and comes with all the trimmings. Buzzy open style kitchen and dining room and always good service. Small cosy pub front area is always nice to have a drink in before dining/if in the area/after a walk. Family and dog friendly place.

Fantastic food bettered only by the service. A lovely welcome from the bar staff, into a warm and well put-together interior. Great selection of beers and wines to suit a well thought of menu. We had the mushroom wellington and spaghetti vongole; both well sized meals and nothing to fault. Highly recommend a visit.

A nice place with bookable spaces for private events. Have not really tried pub itself but function room upstairs was small but decent. A nice bar and staff were accommodating. Steep stairs for elderly family members but a good occasion celebrated well in the space reserved.

Invited to a 50th bday party, held at the second floor, small but cosy with friendly bar staff serving drinks all night. Surprisingly some tasty food platers 👍

Great place and friendly staff..... not the management though (they weren't even there), they need to pull their socks up. How can you run a restaurant and not have any potatoes or sausages????!! Luckily we didn't want food anyway and only wanted a drink.

Went here for dinner tonight with 5 others. The pub has a lovely atmosphere. The food was amazing! Our waitress Lauren was an absolute star! She really look after us! Will definitely be returning. Highly recommend

You won't be disappointed eating here! Truly exceptional Sunday lunch in a lovely dog friendly pub. Renovations have transformed this pokey pub into a multi area restaurant with bar, dedicated dining and outside seating areas. Staff very friendly and attentive, worth a visit!

This pub has a genuine kitchen and chef. The chef takes great pride in their food. Because they prepare the food themselves it means they can be very flexible. For example they had changed the menu from gluten free battered fish and chips to a breaded fish. They actually made some batter up just for us, and served us with gluten free fish and chips off menu. You don't get that level of service at most pubs!

Nice place to have drinks with friendly staff. We had to sit in the restaurant area because the pub area was busy and the outside was too cold, but that was fine.

We hired the Aviary Restaurant for a private function and I would wholeheartedly recommend the venue. Hayley and her team were absolutely fabulous. Hayley was great at communicating with us in the run up to the party and giving us sound and honest advice :-) On the night everything went really smoothly, we were really well looked after despite them juggling several functions on the same day. The food was delicious (we ordered from the canapé menu with a few extra dishes on Hayley's recommendation) and the service was excellent. Thank you all!

We was hired to supply sweetcart to a private function at rear of which the venue hire out, from what we saw the food looked excellent provided for party, in bar area food could be ordered with table service again this looked amazing. Staff were friendly and attentive, large beer garden to side of Travellers friend.

Tried this place around three years and didn't like the vibe. Tried it again last week for lunch and was happy to see the transformation from a dingy old pub to something a bit more inviting. There are a number of wooden benches outside on a grassed area with a large bright and airy restaurant inside. Staff were welcoming and professional but friendly. Between four of us we tried the Korean burger, fish and chips, Ceaser Salad and a broccoli and grapefruit salad (which was the best main course salad I've had for a while (see pic)) . All dishes were freshly prepared with care and tasty. Will definitely return.

Friendly staff, exceptional food and a nice garden area to sit and enjoy the sun. The pub is also cycle friendly (cycle can be left next to your table in the garden area) even though it does not advertised. This is a popular spot so make sure especially on a Sunday afternoon you go early.

Nice and friendly pub with a bit more upmarket dining at the back. You can bring your dog in at the front if it behaves well.

Lunch with friends & rellies. Good menu, good cooking, good service, good beers... ticked all the key boxes.

Food is pricey but good. Roast could have done with some green veg. Young bar staff need more training on greeting customers, maintaining the room by keeping menus, and kid menus out. Gents is a bit shabby with broken floor tiles, random screws in wall, broken taps and no hand soap. Food came out at different times.

Friendly and efficient service. Clean bar restaurant and facilities. Large well maintained and decorated outside garden area. The food vegetarian roast was very good and the vegetables very fresh as was my friends chicken roast. The only thing that was not so good was how many things werent available on the menu. We will definitely be going back.

Inviteded by my sister & family for lunch.I was more than pleasantly surprised. It was not an extensive menu but priced reasonably. The service was on point & the meal very nice. Infact no complaints from the family as they frequently come here & I can see why. They also had a lovely young lady singing live well known ballards' which complimented the atmosphere which seemed to be enjoyed by all. I hope I get another invite.

Nice on a Sunday when they have live music and a decent food menu. Especially on a nice day as they have an outside area. Ok for families and couples alike. I wouldn't expect to pull and girls here. Sorry chaps, bring one with you.

We only saw the outside as it was a sunny day and had table service due to restrictions but it there is a lovely outdoor area and they even had a live singer. Ordering was a little long winded as the app makes you jump through hoops. Also a fair wait but most places are the same due to Covid rules. Would go back again!

It took half an hour to download the app to order drinks from, by which time it used up most of my phone battery. When reserving the table it would have been helpful to be told about the app so that it could have been downloaded before arrival and not waste valuable drinking time. Then we found out we could just ask the barman? What about OAPs who can't use a mobile? Way over priced £10.20 for a large glass of Sauvignon Blanc, £5.70 for a pint! Really? We waited another half another for the 2nd drink to come, even though we asked three bar staff where our order was.

The food was lovely as always. I know that times are tough but the outside seating is freezing it’s like sitting in a wind tunnel. Wear your thermals take blankets and hot water bottles. The weather today was very sunny but we were in complete shade and the patio heaters had run out of gas!!!! Top tip sit at the front

We went for a Sunday roast and the experience was just great. Myself and my partner both went for the pork belly option. The portion size was good and the and the accompanied veg was very nice. The only disappointment being the crackling which was so hard it was impossible to eat. I went for the brownie with raspberry sorbet which is honestly the best dessert I’ve eaten anywhere. I’m not a huge fan of the pub itself but will definitely return to eat again.

I chose to eat here because of the outside garden in this weather. I actually had a vegan burger, which is not like me. It was wonderful! Even tasted meaty! And the side salad was great too, which very few are! Fresh, nice vinaigrette, no manky leaves! Burger was delicious and well presented.Would definitely eat here again. Staff were friendly and helpful. A true Traveller's Friend!
