Toucan Cafe Bistro in Mid Devon

What a gem. Wonderful food in a friendly atmosphere. Our hosts hospitable and welcoming including to our two Labs. In our short stay in this area we’ve visited for lunch and breakfast. Highly recommend.

Excellent breakfast, good sized portion of poached eggs and smoked salmon. Absolutely lovely Mocha! My partner had the veggie breakfast and was also really impressed. Lovely staff too. Nothing too much trouble. Thank you.

Wonderful, friendly service. Popped in for coffee and decided to have cake too! Normally this would just be a slice on a plate….. not here. Beautifully presented and tasted great too. Looking around at some of the other tables showed us that this is definitely a place to visit again!

At last we've managed to follow friends' advice to sample Jonny and Steph's cuisine ... and what good advice it was! Superb excellently prepared menu, a very warm welcome and exceptional value. Who needs to travel to a Michelin star restaurant when there is such quality available locally?

Invited by friends for a dinner and entertainment evening on a coronation theme. 2 choices of main and dessert £30 with a local singing duo who played a mix of popular songs. Food excellent and cooked to order. Good drinks menu with reasonable pricing. Wasn't sure what to expect as we live an hour from bampton but would make the journey again. Highly recommended and good to see such a small business so well supported in the town.

A super place. Recommended by a friend and wow what a find. Stopped for breakfast, which was just perfect and great value, whilst on a trip around Exmoor. The staff were superb and very friendly. Service was efficient and the meal of good quality.

We actually visited the Toucan twice, once for breakfast and a second time for cream tea. It was great both times. The tables are a bit close and I noticed I wasn't the only one moving the oversized pillows (didn't leave enough room to sit on the chair) but once we were settled both the food and service were good. I really appreciated the vegetarian option for breakfast and the conversation with the owner when we returned for cream tea a few days later. We were visitors to the area and the Toucan was recommended by our hosts who are locals, We will look forward to eating at the Toucan on a future visit.

An excellent lunch with generous portions. Easily one of the tastiest mealsI have eaten out. Great value for money, amazing hospitality and atmosphere. I would certainly reccomend to friends and family.

We called in here with two dogs just for coffee . Immediately made to feel very welcome , it was great listening to the banter between the owners and some older locals , so important to make people feel part of the community and it’s clear here these people care . Great coffee n tea cake , biscuits for the dogs and a chat about the fabulous black n white historical pictures on the wall The menu n food coming out looked great . 10/10 for us

We had a stop here to have a coffee or tea in this café. It is very cozy, lots of locals, very good service an very nice owners. They had time for a chat even while it was very busy. They make you feel at home and important.

Stopped for afternoon coffee and gluten free carrot cake - very nice! Was the end of a busy day for them and we were the last to leave...did not feel rushed to leave....

well how do i start , I was taken by my friends Stan and Shirley for what they stated was the happiest place to eat the best Sunday Roast in Devon, the weather was awful ice cold wind with the sting of rain , dark clouds skudded across the sky enen the birds were silent, but sunshine was just a few steps away in the guise of the Toucan Cafe/Bistro, this bright and sparkling little diamond of a eating house was warm and cosy ,the staff were warmer and it was packed to capasity with locals all ages but like me pensioners, wheel chairs no problem , service nothing to touch it ,food beautiful all really home made and fresh as the day it was picked,, this was great but the thing that most delighted me was the way the staff and owners treated their flock of diners, never seen such care and normality given to us all their children came down and joined in with all of us, the older folk really enjoyed this as much as i did as these youngsters were really gold star and full of fun and made the whole place shine, the waitress that served us was also on the same wavelength and no one in that fine place could be treated any better than they were, only the one sitting which made it feel like home from home, ive witnessed the treatment of the elderly and felt disgusted but the Toucan is oh so pro life ,what ever age you are , thank you Stan and Shirley for introducing me to this haven in the Devon hills

Went for a Sunday roast with a group of family and friends. Food was very good and the staff all friendly and helpful.

The food is great the staff really friendly and they allow dogs so ideal if you're on holiday. We went in for coffee and cake then again for breakfast and finally, on our last night in the area to their periodic curry and entertainment evening which we thoroughly enjoyed

Yes I did say my favourite place to eat. Eat here probably once a week and just love the place. Have eaten in lots of really nice restaurants in my life and this place makes me feel relaxed, happy and really well looked after.The food is cooked just how I like it and my husband loves going in for the Toucans delicious cooked breakfast. The owners Jon and Steph are just the nicest people you could ever meet and make you feel like you are coming to their house to eat.Everyone should try this lovely place for an all round wonderful experience, good food, good people and a taste of hospitality at its best.

This is a great little café. We received a warm and friendly welcome. We ordered breakfast items and were not disappointed. Quality, quantity and excellent value for money. The scrambled eggs were cooked to perfection. The staff were friendly, competent and really seemed to enjoy their work. The café was very clean and nicely decorated. Over the last weeks my family and I have frequented this little breakfast gem quite a few times, and still look forward to our next trip there. Good solid breakfast menu offering everything you want/need. Including a gluten free full English breakfast (and other GF combinations).The meat is locally sourced, eggs free range and the black pudding fantastic making a for great start to the day. The family also recommend Salmon and Scrambled eggs, although everything looks good! The espresso drinks (latte/cappuccino/ flat white) were all a little too milky/weak for my own personal taste, but the filter coffee/americano is more than adequate. Lunch didn’t disappoint either with sandwiches, jacket potatoes, omelettes and some homemade specials. I believe they have a side return where cyclists can safely store their bikes off the street, as some did on my last visit. Great value for money. Very warm and welcoming staff.

Julie and Stef are both quick to welcome you to this little gem of a cafe by day bistro later find in the lovely village of Bampton in Devon. This is a not to be missed delight. Great bacon sandwich - proper bacon and good quality bread - and fine coffee. Service was excellent with both partners fully attuned to the needs of gunning a small cafe dealing beautifully with locals and strangers alike. Thanks both!

A beautifully clean restaurant with first class staff/owners. I had the Full English Breakfast, all freshly cooked (no stewed beans here) and very filling, so filling in fact I skipped lunch. Best breakfast I’ve had for a while, certainly a 5 star breakfast.

Disappointing had expected it to be the same standard as the Toukan cafe Minehead we thought they were linked clearly not!which is fantastic for vegetarians and vegans. A very unappetizing salad served with fish and a barely warm baked potato . Slow service. Need to develop better options for dairy free and vegans. Lumps of lettuce with lumps of peppers us not what i expect when eating out. Sliced white bread served up with butter pats even after asking me if i had butter also careless.

We live locally so we dine here quite a lot...actually we dine here quite a lot not because it's local but because it's GOOD! and very good value for money. Brunch is brilliant and goes down well with people who stay with us. " Best brunch ever: said one. Always a delicious full plate, well cooked, well presented and served with a smile. Also best cappuccino for miles. Lunch menu is always excellent too. Menus change regularly, favourites include smoked haddock in cheese sauce and liver and bacon. Veggies are made welcome too. You can also have a simple omelette, toasted teacake, salad... there's lots of choice and John and Steph are very accommodating and welcoming. Check out the website for special evenings too. Tables with easy access and easy parking not far away.

We had a very good lunch at the toucan cafe on a quiet Friday lunchtime. Very friendly welcome and excellent service throughout.

We stopped at this cafe only for a coffee, but after reading the menu decided to have lunch. This was the best decision of the day, the freshly cooked meals were delicious and the dessert was to die for. We were made very welcome , even our dog. After talking to the proprietors it was clear that this cafe is integral part of the village life of Bampton.

Came for sunday lunch whilst visiting family and it was lovely. The chef made a mushroom bake for us as we are vegetarian and we could help ourselselves to veg. It was nice to be offered yorkshire puds and stuffing as some places asume you don't want them if you dont have meat. The staff were very kind and talkative and the desserts were amazing!

Varied menu to suit all tastes with options for those with any special dietary needs. Worthwhile spending some time chatting to the owner/chef if not too busy.

Had a lovely lunch with family. The food was fresh, generous portions and wholesome. Mum loved the Bean Hot Pot and said it was the best she had ever tasted. Two members had the prawn and egg salad which was a very generous portion with plenty of fresh ingredients. Th staff and Chef were very friendly and chatted the customers who were a mix of locals and tourists. Even the Dog was given a biscuit.

Stopped for coffee and light bite. The coffees arrived with loads of chocolate powder on them which had not been requested. The toast, which we opted for granary came up whole meal packet sliced and had been shown the toaster rather than put into it.

A lovely warm and friendly place. The food is constantly good and and the service is excellent. We could not believe the carvery, all you could eat and more plus sweet for less than many establishments charge just for one course. If you are ever anywhere close visit the Toucan, you will be impressed, I was !!!!

we went with two friends for a meal near christmas,fully booked.The place inside sits about 28 people to 32 people,very quaint and charming inside.service and food was really good.This was the first time we had had a meal in there since the new owners had taken over.we had been in there for a coffee,but first time we had a meal.Would recommend this place to any one who wants to go there for tea and cake ,or a nice meal.

We enjoyed an excellent Christmas Lunch, Turkey and all the trimmings, plenty of properly cooked vegetables and roast potatoes, followed by Christmas Pudding and Clotted Cream. What more could you wish for! Easily the best Christmas meal I have had in Bampton this year. Good service and pleasant staff and all at a very reasonable price.

Lovely atmosphere here when you walk in and the breakfast was very good! Nice big portions and the service was great as well. Will definitely be back!

My husband and I were staying in Bampton and popped into the Toucan Cafe for breakfast - what a brilliant find! I had the gluten free full breakfast and it was delicious - 2 eggs, gluten free bread, 3 gluten free hash browns, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms and baked beans all for £5.95 it was amazing. The staff were very helpful and friendly nothing was too much trouble. If we are ever back in Bampton we will definitely be returning for breakfast and lunch!

Went to the Toucan for Sunday roast on 23/7/17, shhhh!!! don't want the wife to see this as she is a good cook but this meal was one of the best I have ever eaten. the meat was cooked to perfection and all the vegetables the same, exceptional attention to our requirements and you could not ask for more, oh and it's very reasonably priced too.Clifford Manning

We arranged to visit a relative and take her out for lunch and invited her to choose a venue. As she lives in the village but had not dined here before she suggested we try it. As we had booked the table was ready for us and the owner showed us to our seats and took us through the menu. There was a good selection of snacks and main meals for what is a relatively small restaurant. The three of us chose from the specials board and also ordered wine and beer. The drinks arrived very quickly and not too long after the food arrived. It was nicely presented and whilst my fish was not the biggest portion I had ever had it was , when combined with the very generous dish of vegetables, more than adequate. The food was tasty, hot and well cooked, it is absolutely impossible to find any fault what so ever. Whilst eating the meal the owner came to make sure everything was to our satisfaction and after we had finished the main meal the chef/owner came to ask whether we had enjoyed the meal. We felt as if we were important and valued as customers, not something that happens everywhere. We then decided to have a sweet each from a selection of about 5 choices. We choose sticky toffee pudding and apple tart.they were every bit as delicious as the main course. All in all a very, very good meal coupled with friendly owners and staff who made us feel very welcome. There is little doubt that we will return in the near future.

I seem to be out of kilter with most reviewers but I was very disappointied with my breakfast at the Toucan. My companion and myself both ordered smoked salmon and scrambled eggs with toast (£5.95), plus a Miles breakfast tea and a green tea. Toast was like an economy supermarket own brand bread, salmon was mean in portion size, eggs were tasteless - no seasoning and not cooked with butter I suspect. Had to add a fair bit of salt and pepper to get some flavour. Texture was as if the eggs had been left under a heat lamp for some time and set hard. The tea was very weak - one bag only in the pot. The place was however busy and seemed to be a popular stop off point with cyclists, but food just wasn't of an appropriate standard for me I'm afraid.

Visited on Father's Day for Sunday roast, and what a roast everything was piping hot, fresh and cooked to perfection the meat melted in your mouth.Best Sunday roast I've had in a long time. Jon and Steph and their staff were fantastic.Can't wait to go back for more.

We were searching for a late light lunch at about 2.45pm. visited 3 pubs in Bampton but all had stopped serving lunchtime food. We wanted a Beer and were overjoyed to find The Toucan which was licensed and serving lunch. I had an excellent smoked haddock dish and the atmosphere was very friendly and dog friendly too. The owners were welcoming and helpful as we enquired about life in Bampton. A really good atmosphere and lovely meals.

I had my parents visiting for the day and was walking through the main street when we spotted the Toucan. We decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed! The menu was just what we were after, I had the ploughman's which was lovely, crusty bread, fresh salad, pickles and good helping of proper ham plus a double yolker egg (bonus) . For my 4 year old daughter we could pick anything off the menu and they would create a child's portion for half the menu price, an excellent idea. Not stuck with something and chips like so many other places. Really friendly atmosphere and nothing too much trouble. Will return shortly :-)

I have eaten here five times on visits to the area and every time it's been excellent.You receive a genuinely warm welcome no matter how busy they are, and the Chef usually asks if everything is to your liking. I have to avoid food containing gluten and they understand the problem well. Items on offer have been a lovely carrot cake, gf hot cross buns and they always have gf bread.The food is nicely presented and nothing is too much trouble, definitely worth a visit, the new owners' will give you a warm welcome.

This is an excellent place for lunch, with a good variety of food making it more than just a cafe. There is seating in the garden at the back if the weather is warm enough, and the service is very friendly and efficient.

We had to wait for a table at 1230 on a Wednesday lunch time which gives a clue to the popularity of this pleasant little place - it was no problem to go for a stroll and return some twenty minutes later. Attentive, friendly service with a chef who emerges from the kitchen to check you are happy with your meal make this an even better experience. We both enjoyed omelettes with lovely fresh salad - it was a nice change not to be presented with wiry mixed leaves from a bag, but instead a colourful and crispy mix including red onion and pepper, with a tasty vinaigrette. We look forward to return visits and would recommend the Toucan.

We called in with our dogs for a cup of tea and cake. The owner was welcoming and the service friendly and helpful.

Always have a friendly welcome, lovely fresh food and great prices. Have visited with my family as well as on a business lunch and really enjoyed the food, love the choices on the menu, something for everyone. Nice that dogs are welcome too :)

Six of us working in Bampton for the day had a late breakfast here. Clean and comfortable. Friendly, helpful waitress. Very good full English breakfast and fairly priced. No complaints at all.

Very disappointed. Called in for coffee and a bacon sandwich on a Saturday morning.With 2 assistants alongside the owner and with only about 25 covers it took 15 minutes for the drinks to arrive. I ordered a cappuccino but got a latte in a mug. The bacon in the granary sandwich (the white bread had run out by 11am) had clearly been microwaved and was a flabby, pale and unappetising pink. Offered ketchup it was just plonked on the table in a 1 litre plastic catering bottle. Standards, Standards!! Sadly not a patch on what was previously on offer before the Toucan was taken over. And I have no idea what the chef in full 'whites' was doing clearing tables in such a tiny place. Its early days and I hope the new owners survive. I wish them well. It can and must raise its standards. If it does I'll be very pleased to report back in a years time.

Stopped for lunch I had one of the specials lamb. It was superb. We both had one of the homemade sweets. Reasonably priced. Great food great service we will return.

We were a party of 9 people for a Birthday party and we had a fabulous meal with really excellent food which was all freshly cooked, home-made and very tasty.The service was also very good and we were made to feel really welcome.I would advise anyone who is in the area to check this Bistro out as it is really worth a visit and very good value for money.

I called in with a friend during the Bampton Charter Fair at the end of October. Home made, piping hot soup and a brie, bacon and cranberry sandwich were just the ticket for an autumn lunch. The food was very good indeed altough I thought my friend's coffee was served in a rather unappetising way. All staff members were very friendly and efficient. Decor is quite nice and complements the country setting of this lovely town.

I go here regularly, on my own, with the kids or friends. It is my favourite café ever. There is always a warm welcome, it's relaxed, the food is excellent. Julia makes the best soups, and the lunch time meals are very good value. The decor and music lends a chilled ambience and you can get lost with a coffee and a book. Equally, bigger gatherings here are fun and easy. Consistently excellent service, I'm a massive fan.

My wife and I love the village of Bampton and were delighted to find Toucan Cafe. The service is very welcoming and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The cake selection is delicious and difficult to resist and the lunch menu looks tempting, which I'm sure we'll try on another visit. We will definitely be back when next in Bampton.

An excellent evening with friends at one of the regular Toucan Sausage and Mash nights. They are always oversubscribed and it is easy to see why. A choice of sausages, all delicious and several different mashes, equally delicious followed by scrumptious deserts. We all had a lovely evening - thank you.

I live about half an hour's drive from here and call in on occasion, most recently with friends before Christmas. The home-cooked food is excellent, good coffee (and a selection of beer, wine and cider), and the atmosphere is cosy and welcoming. Plus if you don't know it Bampton is a very attractive little market town with a few shops, wide main street and river. Well worth a visit - or a diversion for a few miles off the North Devon link road.

Delicious menu - and for veggies! A range of alcohol served too. A great atmosphere and very cosy. My party hire the whole cafe for a private party every year and always have such an enjoyable event here - dishes were piping hot and so tasty. They couldn't be more accommodating for us.A definite visit if you're in the area!! A little gem in Bampton!

We were lucky to be diverted because of a road closure and ended up looking for breakfast in Brampton. The bacon & egg sandwiches are excellent. The service is extremely friendly. Would definitely come back if I'm in the area.

Nothing beats a hot chocolate on a very rainy day for cold cyclists. Especially with welcoming hosts for dripping wet customers. Able to park the bikes leaning against the shop so in view, though a little narrow for other passers by. Sensational Devonshire Tea and chicken Caesar salad as well as storybooks for our 3 yr old son to read. And a toilet, porcelain always welcome after a long ride! Cosy atmosphere, a little tight on seating space with lively clientele to chat with. Highly recommend.

I was visiting a friend of mind in Musgrove Hospital Taunton from North Devon and on a whim decided to take the old road passing through Bampton. I stopped initially at the Toucan for coffee but decided to take an early lunch of toast, scrambled egg & bacon it was superb, the staff were friendly and the price more than reasonable. I will certainly stop by again & have already told several of my friends to consider doing the same.

a wonderful welcome and undoubtedly the best scones we have ever tasted . reasonable priced and dog friendly . attentive staff with offers of top ups but we were too full from the delicious scones .

Visited for lunch on a cold day and made very welcome with good food. Quite full but service acceptable and friendly. My first visit to Bampton - I will visit again

They made a party of 13 family members very welcome on the evening of Bampton Fair, even though they had been rushed off their feet all day. The food was delicious and the service everything you could wish for.
