Tonnau Restaurant in Gwynedd

Had lovely starter Prawn with Chorizo and Duck pate with Brioche bread, mains had beef cheeks with vegetables, ok and my other half had the Moroccan lamb, lots of fat and not much flavour, found mains okish but nothing to write home about. I had an America coffee, okish and my husband had almond cake and poached pear sweet, nice but? Ok evening, restaurant quiet, staff good but felt food was average and not the type of food that sets your tastebuds on fire. Not as highend as the reviews suggest. Overpriced.

Food lovely, staff very friendly and accomdating, and ambience/music/decor just perfect. Wine is gorgeous 😍 shame trip advisor make me witter on longer than necessary!!!!!! Is this enough characters yet!!!!!! But seriously the first 94 were exactly 💯

Lovely calm and relaxing setting to enjoy a very pleasant evening. Food was well presented and very enjoyable. Good selection of vegetarian and vegan options. Service was friendly, professional and very attentive. Would definitely recommend and hope to return.

Really good experience in this hotel restaurant. Food is of an extremely high standard.Potted crab starter superb as was prawn/chorizo. Delicious main courses with very generous portions.Scrumptious desserts too. Staff make diners feel at home.

So disappointing the lamb was a poor cut and overcooked. The vegan kebab was pretty tasteless and the rustic chips looked and tasted like frozen. Service and wine lovely. A lot of money for not great food go to the goat inn it’s amazing no comparison to quality and price

A truly classy experience from beginning to end. Pre-dinner drinks and menu choices are made in the hotel lounge which has lovely sea and castle views. Once food is prepared you are led through to the beautifully appointed dining room. The exceptional staff, led by Laura, are so knowledgable and maximised our experience. The quality ingredients combined with an amazing chef are an absolute winner. This restaurant is not to be missed if you are in Gwynedd, whether you are a hotel guest or not!

We came here on our second night in Criccieth where we have been staying during the week of the National Eisteddfod. The restaurant appeared clean and stylish, the atmosphere was relaxed and the staff were welcoming and friendly. Our food was well-presented and tasted delicious and, overall, the service we received couldn't be faulted, so much so that we have decided we would like to return later in the year to stay for a night or two in the hotel (The Caerwylan) of which the restaurant is a part. I would definitely recommend eating here.

Fine dining without any of the pretentiousness. 😀👍 Such attentive, genuine, friendly staff that make you feel very welcome and relaxed. Oh and the food is very tasty too. 😀 Highly recommend the prawn and chorizo starter and the fillet steak. Deserts are also fabulous. We will definitely be back. Would love to stay in the hotel next time.

Took my parents for early supper, as I do every time I come to visit. Usually, both service and food are impeccable but last night wasn’t up to the usual high standard. Mum pronounced her belly pork main course to be tough and the crispy crumb coating “too salty” - something she remarked upon when the waitress cleared the largely uneaten meal. My dessert, the chocolate and coffee torte was ok but the last mouthful had the taste of something that had been uncovered in a fridge. Every restaurant can have an off night but I was disappointed that mum’s meal wasn’t acknowledged when the bill came.

Slightly more expensive than the norm but well worth the money. The staff were brilliant and the food was perfect. The restaurant is part of The Caerwylan Hotel and we are considering staying for a couple of nights the next time we visit Criccieth.

We had excellent fillet steaks beautifully cooked. The staff are friendly and helpful, the wine list is good. The atmosphere is peaceful and we had a table with a view of the castle and the sea. We'll be back the next time we're in town.

The bar rooms are superbly decorated and comfortable. A great gin selection and real ale, too. A well priced, superbly presented and delicious meal. The cheese plate is a particular delight. Service was attentive but not overbearing. A lovely evening

Hotel based restaurants are all pretty similar in my experience. They cater for the hotel guests, within a mostly acceptable set of parameters. Usually, they’ll get breakfast about right, and offer a predictable menu for the evening. And then there’s Tonnau. What an incredible hidden gem of a restaurant this is! First off all, it’s absolutely spotlessly clean, tidy and organised. The decor is super contemporary with a very high-end feel to it. Clearly, the owners of the Caergwylan Hotel (within which the restaurant is located) have a fine eye for design and detail. The restaurant makes an outstanding first impression before you’ve even been shown to your table. Unbelievably, things get better from there! We were looked after by Laura for dinner and breakfast, and her enthusiasm for the restaurant and indeed for the whole hotel is uplifting and joyous. She was incredibly professional, and at the same time friendly, knowledgeable, courteous, and efficient. I’m very tempted to suggest that the quality of the service is the stand out feature of the restaurant, but even that is surpassed by what comes out of the kitchen!! The food at Tonnau is in a class of its own. The menus are imaginative, with locally sourced produce featuring throughout the dishes. Presentation on the plate is of a very high standard, demonstrating the chef’s attention to detail, and everything we ate was cooked to perfection and served piping hot on hot plates. I ordered a fillet steak cooked medium rare. It was easily one of the best steaks I have ever enjoyed, and cooked absolutely to perfection. EXACTLY medium rare, and left to rest for sufficient time before serving. If you’re lucky enough to stay at the Caergwylan Hotel (also highly recommended), don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy an evening at Tonnau. Even if you’re not staying at Caergwylan but are in reach of Criccieth, an evening at Tonnau should be on your list of priorities. You’ll need to book in advance though! One final point, on a Tuesday in mid-November, Tonnau’s breakfast menu includes Croissants, freshly baked to order. I have never been offered “freshly baked to order” in any hotel restaurant anywhere in the World! It goes without saying that they are the star of the breakfast menu! Or was it the Eggs Royale…..?

Stayed at the Caerwylan Hotel recently and dined in the restaurant 3 nights. There was a good choice on the menu and the food was excellent. I am gluten free and was well catered for, particularly at breakfast each morning. A special mention to Laura and Haf, who looked after us superbly, with very friendly quick and efficient service. There is a nice atmosphere in the restaurant and it’s a lovely place to dine.

We stayed I the Caerwylan Hotel for two nights and dined at their Tonnau restaurant whist there. Laura looked after the restaurant and along with several other waiting staff provided a relaxed welcoming atmosphere. The menu was excellent with a balanced choice a starters, mains and desserts.Clearly the chef considers presentation important and it shows. Helpings we’re not too big and we had room for desserts which certainly did not disappoint.Would certainly recommend and we hope to return in the future.

This was our 4th night on our current visit to Wales, easily the best meal by far!I had the terriene to start followed by the lamb, my wife had the duck salad followed by the cod. All were delicious. Service and atmosphere were fantastic, all the staff were efficient and friendly, particularly impressed by Laura who ran things beautifully. She was engaged with all guests and was very aware as to what was going on around the restaurant. We finished our evening relaxing in the lounge with a nightcap and were very pleasantly surprised by the bill. Would definitely eat here again and highly recommend.

We had a very enjoyable meal at this restaurant which overlooks the seafront. The hotel has been refurbished to a high standard with a large lounge and bar for drinks and coffee. The food was well prepared and presented and we particularly liked the cod loin and the wide range of cheeses to select from. We felt that a third king prawn should have been added to the prawn and cous cous starter given the price - but the taste was great. Note that there are limited taxis in Criccieth on Sunday evening.

This is a great place to come and have a meal even if you’re not staying there. We had duck to start, followed by pork belly on noodles and wild mushroom tagliatelle, all with a delicious wine. The staff were friendly and efficient.

This restaurant and the hotel it is part of, made a lovely holiday into a very special one. The extensive menu exceeds what is usually offered in hotels, and the standard of the food was amazing. The flavours and presentation were superb and consistent over three evenings. The ambiance is relaxing helped by lovely staff who obviously knew their jobs , always smiling. A real gem.

My wife and I enjoyed a beautifully prepared and served meal in the Tonnau Restaurant.The service was excellent and the food even better.Good variety of choice on the menu and it was nice to see half bottles of wine offered.After 18months of lockdowns and limited menus it was a treat to enjoy such a fabulous meal.

Stayed at the The Caerwylan Hotel to finally meet up with family in Wales after 2 years of lockdowns . The food and friendly service at The Tonnau restaurant was the icing on the cake . Beautifully presented, delicious home cooked evening meal and breakfast , a real hidden gem !

We booked here after reading some positive reviews. Would not normally book a restaurant in a hotel but was not disappointed. Every mouthful was delicious, fresh and balanced. Don’t normally go for a dessert but went for three courses and glad we did. The service was fantastic too with everyone very good at their job.

Had a lovely meal last week at Tonnau, which was a pleasant surprise as booked on reviews from TA. I had curried vegetable roll with Butternut Squash puree to start, it was so tasty and I didn't want it to finish it (could quite happily have had another one). I then had Cous cous with Halloumi with yoghurt which again was very tasty, husband had Lamb and said it was beautifully cooked and very tender - he really enjoyed it. Staff were friendly and attentive in a good way and all in all had a top notch dinner.

We stayed at the hotel for 5 nights and eat at the restaurant once but could have eat here a lot more. Great menu and fantastic value for money. Food was beautifully presented. You can have something quite simple or something more a la carte depending on how you feel. Loved it.

This is a restaurant within an hotel. Superb location and great garden for pre or after drinks. Overall the food was good but service delivery needs attention. Normally this means you wait ages between courses however it’s the opposite here. Ordered some drinks and within minutes asked if we had chosen our dishes. We did order but starters arrived in 5 mins so we took our time to eat this. Plates cleared as soon as they were finished. Mains arrived again within 5 minutes which is not the sign of a good restaurant. Restaurant was virtually empty by 9 pm so very little ambiance even at this early hour. So nice place but got a long way to go to beat the best place in the area which is the Y Sgwar

We just couldn't fault this restaurant. The staff were welcoming, competent, and attentive. The food was excellent, and the portion size spot on for us. Definitely one to go back to. Stand out as well as the food was the wine.

Checked in to the hotel after a later than expected arrival so for convenience booked into the Tonnau restaurant what a brilliant decision. Food was excellent, we can definitely recommend the lamb or the squid main courses. Service was first class, breakfast both mornings was everything you could have wanted, and dinner on day 2 was again great, and again lamb!! Highly recommended and thanks to everyone who looked after us

Enjoyed a delicious gin and tonic from the extensive choice of over 40 gins in the garden overlooking the sea. The restaurant has recently been refurbished and is stunning. The food as always, was perfect. Attention to detail is faultless and the service efficient and friendly, led by the likeable Laura. Can’t wait to return

An excellent find on the seafront of Criccieth. We received a lovely welcome and were really looked after by Laura throughout our meal. The decor is lovely and the food is wonderful. The spring rolls for starters are a must! We will definitely be returning when we next visit the area.

We booked on Tuesday 13th in the restaurant and the food was beautiful. It was so nice the 7 of us rebooked for the Thursday. This is a lovely hotel and whilst we did not stay there, you can tell it is well run. The restaurant and lounge area are nicely decorated and well presented. The food was of a very high quality and all the staff were first rate. Thanks to Francis, Laura from Lincolnshire and the rest of the team for their top class service!We would fully recommend booking here if you are in the Criccieth area.

We weer staying in the hotel and, as with last year, opted for the Tonnau for dinner. It is simply exceptional and I won't say any more. If you are in the area, try it. It is brilliant.

A great typical seaside hotel restaurant. The menu was interesting and varied, the food was good as you would expect from a place like this, but the service was the thing that stood out the most for me. Expecially in these difficult times. Something that not many places have managed to achieve.

Restaurant has had a great makeover since we last stopped at the Hotel. Laura and her staff are excellent, attentive and really helpful when asked about the menu and choices.We just love the attention to detail and high standards that run through the whole team. Excellent food from brilliant staff. Good wine list - not overpriced. We were there for nine nights and ate in every night. Plenty of variety on the menu.

We were guests in the hotel and enjoyed an evening meal at the Tonnau. It has a good atmosphere and a very interesting varied menu. The fish dishes were really well presented with very tasty. The Welsh cheeseboard was first class with excellent choice of cheeses and really good quality biscuits and other trimmings.

The welcome from every staff member was warm and genuine. They proved to be knowledgeable about the menu and answered our questions with confidence. The food was tasty and well presented, we enjoyed every morsel. I couldn’t give 5 stars because the dining room was a big let down. We visited in March when lockdown restrictions were in place which may have had an effect on the ambiance. The dining room is a very large space but it was soulless and felt very much like we were eating in a care home. I understand that it helps staff monitor and attend to the room if there are no visual obstructions; but the addition of some architectural greenery/plants/screens would create a few more intimate spaces. After speaking with friends who had dined there before lockdown, we found they were of the same opinion regarding the excellent food and staff but felt the dining room was lacking in atmosphere.

We were on holiday in the area in October and came across the Caerwylan Hotel and their Tonnau Restaurant. We were glad we did. We dined on two different nights and the food,service and general ambience from all the staff were outstanding. We will need to go again.They were careful that we had the temperature check ( Covid 19 and all that) Better to be safe. Wales went into lock down after we left, so we were glad they did.A truly remarkable restaurant in such a small town.

Excellent food and service. It’s just a shame that the necessary Covid restrictions have affected the ambience a little rendering the restaurant a little soulless. But the food was superb and the service faultless.

We booked the Tonnau for a Sunday night meal with family and friends. It was excellent. Felt very safe with the COVID precautions they were taking but they somehow managed to maintain a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The menu was limited, often a good sign of quality, and the choices were all tempting. I loved the Baked halloumi with couscous and the Lamb rump was also very much liked. For dessert, the Raspberry & orange cheesecake was considered a bit special. Thoroughly recommended

Four of us have just returned from dining here and though we are away for a couple more nights in North Wales we know we will not eat as well as we did tonight. Food and service was just fantastic! Our lovely waitress Laura recommended spicy spring rolls, lamb and rice pudding. Separate dishes of course but all so delicious. Trust this lady should you find yourself here. Times are grim at the min, but for just a few hours we got to have a genuinely great time thanks to our experience here. I really can’t recommend it highly enough

Had a lovely dinner this evening. We were a family group of 6. Very friendly welcome & service from the staff. Relaxed and kindly atmosphere. All the food was delicious. Specific positive food feedback was for the halloumi, squid, arancini and the cheesecake. Would highly recommend Tonnau. Felt Covid safe without being intrusive.

Attached to the Caerwylan hotel, we ate here twice during our stay. We had to book a table at reception to ensure social distancing due to Covid.A good menu to choose from. We had the lightly curried spring roll followed by lamb rump. Excellent. The food was well prepared and efficiently served. Drinks were available by the glass as well as by the bottle.As a further recommendation, some diners were non-residents who, we later learned, were having to stay at a nearby hotel (as the Caerwylan was fully booked) and they preferred the meals in the Tonnau.

My partner and I had a superb meal in a wonderful location. We were shown to a table in the lounge and offered the wine and food menus to choose. My partner opted for the confit pulled pork starter and I had the smoked duck breast. Portion sizes were just right for a starter, and the presentation standard was very high. The duck was very tasty and my my partners starter was of an equally high standard.Mains were Salmon with a lemon and herb crumb crust for my partner and I had the Welsh lamb rump.The salmon and accompanying vegetables were cooked and seasoned to perfection, the Welsh lamb was probably the best lamb I've had and the accompanying minted mash and charred vegetables were tremendous.Desserts, cheesecake and a creme brulee rounded off a fantastic meal.We wouldn't hesitate to book again if in the area

Lovely setting overlooking the bay. I had the lamb and it just melted in the mouth, some of the best I've had, delicious!!

The food was of a high quality in terms of presentation and content. The staff were wonderful and contributed greatly to our enjoyment of the two evening meals we had at the hotel. I would have liked to have given this review five stars but for one issue. On both nights as soon as our starter had been cleared away within seconds of finishing it the main course arrived. This might seem a tad petty but i feel that there should be some space between courses. Thanks again to all who served our food on both nights.
