Tom Yum in Chiltern

I can’t believe it took us so long to visit! We enjoyed the informality and speed of service. But mostly, the food was very authentic especially the soup - so tasty and quite large! I will have that next time, rather than the satay. Lots to choose from though. Very friendly and cute. Will visit again

The decor and ambiance of this restaurant is not great but the food is definitely worth coming here . The restaurant is so small and they have a lot of people coming in for takeaways which is not so good if you’re seated by the door.

We have eaten at Thai restaurant many times and it never fails to serve delicious food. Cannot recommend it highly enough

I have eaten lunch and dinner at Tom Yum and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The noodle dishes are particularly well done. It is always busy so you do need to book.

The waitress seemed to be friendly with certain regular customers and took their orders first, in spite of the fact that some other customers arrived earlier and were waiting patiently to order. This did appear rude in the eyes of other customers. Word of mouth is important. It is crucial to let every customer feel that they are welcome and are treated equally. This is a constructive recommendation and hope it is taken on board.

My wife and I had our first meal here today... lovely experience... waitress was awesome and so friendly..food was fantastic...highly recommend to anyone wanting traditional Thai food at great prices

A wistful visit with a dear friend who lost his wife to cancer earlier this year. This was one of our favourite places as a foursome. It was heartening to see that it is still thriving. Wonderful food. We chose a mixed starter, then sweet and sour chicken, chicken with ginger sauce and crab with green curry, along with jasmine rice and vegetable phad thai. It was as busy as it always used to be, so we had to wait a little while. However, it was worth it. We weren’t in any great hurry. Our server Caesar was very sweet. Congratulations to everyone on bringing together a team effort to deliver great food and service.

We visited Tom Yum this evening for my Birthday where as per usual we had a truly wonderful thai meal. What is refreshing about Tom Yum is it is run and owned by full on authentic thai people and the food is just superb and it even has a photo of 'James Bond Island' of Phang Nga bay on the wall!!. To top if all off the charming waitress came from Laguna Phuket which is a place that has a very fond place in my heart. Tom Yum is truly awesome for an authentic thai meal in a traditional thai restaurant

called in on the off chance of a table which they said was fine, corn cake was delicious and curry was perfect. very friendly staff

This was the first time we ate at Tom Yum and we were very pleased indeed. Our meal was excellent, the service was friendly and quick and as it happened to be a Christmas celebration, I was thrilled to hear appropriate music in the background. Very good value indeed and highly recommend!

Tom Yum does everything a local restaurant should. Service is friendly and helpful with staff making time for a chat. The menu is extensive and food delicious. Spring rolls, tom yum, sticky rice and a small beer was more than enough for one person and only came to £18.50. Highly recommended :)

4 of us visited Tom Yum last night and were hugely impressed by the delicious food, attentive service, great ambience and value for money. Loved it. We normally have takeaways from here but we'll try to dine in more often. What lovely people!

This was our first trip to this local restaurant. The restaurant was run by a local family who were all of Thai origin. The foot and service were out of this world and it was like we were right back in Thailand. A wonderful meal!

Having been to Tom Yum on many occasions for dine in we were disappointed with our first take out. The food just didn’t come up the same standard. The noodles seemed more gooey and our curry more watery. Somehow it just wasn’t the same and the true Thai flavour was a little lacking. We’ll wait until they open for sit in before trying again.

Always great food and service. Very authentic Thai food served in a warm, friendly and homely setting.

I regularly visit eating in pre Covid and takeaways post Covid - they are always helpful and able to accommodate. Food is always tasty and a win win with my kids loving it too.

Just love the food and staff.....we have been coming here for years but felt a little uncomfortable due to COVID situation with people coming in to collect take a ways and standing very near to us seated at a table. There was no ventilation either, other than the door opening and closing all the time for take a ways and obviously we were not wearing masks as we were eating - it’s a tricky one for sure.

Mediocre. Have been to this restaurant pre lockdown, and was very happy. Post lockdown had a couple of take aways. A bit disappointed tonight. If you’re too busy to take my order tell me. No issue. But don’t give me sub standard food because that will just mean I am less likely to revisit

I've only given this 4 because I have had clearly better Thai food. Having said that the food was very good and I will happily frequent this eatery in the future.

We’d been looking forward to a meal here for a special occasion and had made a reservation in advance. I then rang up again to reconfirm the table and they read my contact number back to me, so no ambiguity, all confirmed. When we then turned up for the table they didn’t have any record of the reservation and denied that anyone has taken my phone call earlier that evening, despite me having the call log on my phone to show I had been speaking to someone. We were left without a table and had to go elsewhere.

On arrival the team were very welcoming, made a great suggestion that we all go for a group menu (we were 15). They were perfectly attentive, anticipating pretty much everything so that we never had to ask. A very happy way to celebrate a big birthday. Thank you for a lovely time!The only thing they need to improve is to be clear about bookings, menu options and how definately they had accepted my booking 1 month earlier.

This is a great simple local restaurant that serves excellent authentic Thai cuisine at a good value and service.

We happened upon this place by chance today and it was some of the best Thai food I have eaten in the UK, will definitely make the trip back soon

A pleasant meal. Nothing I can really fault about the place, but TBH I am surprised the reviews are so amazing. It wasn't spectacular compared to Thai restaurants in big cities, but perhaps compared to local offerings it rates highly. As I say, nothing actually wrong with the place...only a very minor couple of things I could point out if I was being very picky...so I shalln't...it's just that it didn't have any particular 'Wow' factor either. The fish was delicious. In fact, the food was very good, it was just the atmostphere that was a little underwhelming. Some may prefer that though - an unpretentious atmostphere is easier to relax in perhaps.

Had a fabulous meal here last night. The Som Tom and squid starters were tasty and very generous portions. The restaurant was packed and there was a real buzz about the place. Our mains were also delicious chu prawn and a special main course. Haven't eaten here for a while and had forgotten just how authentic the food was and so full of flavours.

We went to Tom Yums to celebrate me passing my driving test. The food delicious as always and the waiter was very friendly. I would definitely recommend it.

I've eaten gere several times over the years. The service is always unfailingly pleasant. The food is consistently good and well-cooked. Children are welcome here and it makes for a good family meal at reasonable prices. There is only one drawback: it can get very noisy with the echoing bare walls. If they could put up some noise-absorbing wall-hangings, I'd give it another star! If you like Thai food, you should try this place.

I’ll say is the best Thai restaurant in the area. We go at least ones a month but due to not having access to a proper kitchen currently we’ve been regular customers.

We had a lovely meal with all of the family last week and ended up sharing much of the menu. Everyone agreed that both the food and the service was excellent and we will be returning for another birthday gathering soon.

My favourite Thai restaurant in the country. So authentic and freshly cooked. Service is always excellent and the staff do their best to recommend dishes to try. So reasonably priced (really cheap at lunch time!) and you get the same quality of food every single time. Would recommend every day of the week.

We love going to Tom Yum. We always have amazing food and enjoy chatting with the lovely staff. Best to book a table as so many people pop in but are turned away as they are just so popular - and rightly so.

Enjoyed a delicious meal here last week, as it was nice weather we asked if we could sit outside and this was quickly set up although we hadn't booked a table. The staff were all friendly and very professional and helpful and made a lovely atmosphere. All the food was beautifully presented, fresh and delicious. For starters the king prawns and sweetcorn fritters were great and the vegetarian curry and duck tamarind were delicious. It turned out to be an excellent choice of place for the vegetarian. We hadn't booked so were lucky to get a table as we could see how popular it was. Thank you for a great time.

Had a few take aways from here over the years but since the Blue Orchid (opposite) closed, they have dropped their standards.

went here for the first time with friends, luckily we had booked a table which i highly recommend to do. thursday night very very busy, fantastic atmosphere, very buzzy and lively. service was superb, we had a lovely mixture of starters, chicken satay, golden bag and fresh spring rolls, followed by excellent main courses, chicken noodle dish, beef matsaman curry with peanuts, and rice dish with chicken. it was really top notch. highly recommend, reasonable prices too. excellent night

Came here before having a few drinks in Old Amersham. Nice small restaurant. Food was very good and great service! They seems a little annoyed that we had booked a table of 3 but the third person was ill! but hey, didn't put a downer on the meal!

First visit to Tom Yum where we’ve been intending to go for ages. We were not disappointed. The food was exceptionally good, especially my special Green Curry Sea Bass which was about the best I’ve tasted. The staff are delightful, atmosphere lively and fun. Definitely worth a visit and we will definitely be back

This is a very popular restaurant so I would recommend you book in advance. There is a good selection of dishes with some nice 'specials' too. Wine selection is good. I like Thai food but I don't like too much chilli The waitress said all dishes on the menu could be changed as required, which was a plus. This is not a fancy place, it is quite basic and some of the tables are not square. I will definitely be going back.

As we were not too hungry we largely dined off starters (our favourites anyway). Our family loves seafood so calamari,prawns and soft shell crab are always favourites. I really like the plan noodles to accompany mains too, really light and fresh.

This Thai restaurant sits at one end of Amersham high st. The food is typically Thai [there seem to be a number of similar establishments in the area] and is good value. The place was busy but not noisy and service was prompt and with a smile. Due to the size booking is a must Thurs to Sat.

Went for dinner with a group of primary school mums. Very impressed with the service but even more impressed with the food which was very tasty. Delicious mushroom with coconut milk soup for starters which I would highly recommend followed by a seafood phanaeng curry. Their food is spicy and I had been warned so stuck to a 1 chilli curry dish which was beautifully spicy but a 2 chilli dish might have been a bit much for me. Only slight gripe is that we were seated near to the door so felt a bit cold but other than that a great Thai restaurant. It isn't very big so you might need to book.

The food is flawless and the staff are great, you get as close as possible to the authentic Thai freshness. Definitely try the green curry and pad Thai. Best affordable restaurant in Amersham.

Service poor compared to normal and food clearly lacking it normal vibrancy and exciting flavours Normally a good 8 or 9/10 but tonight a poor 3/10. A real shame.

Returned once again and found it still as warm and welcoming as before, good home cooked food, selective menu along with "Specials", No Luxury surrounds but authentic Thi home comfort and atmosphere.

Having checked several restaurants in London all of which were both over booked and expensive we returned to Amersham and were warmly invited to Tom Yum, at short notice. The starters and mains were both hot, fresh and very tasty. The meal cost was about 1/3 less than London, which made me happy. We will definitely be returning.

Visited here for lunch due to the reviews. The food was ok, the starters were better than the mains. We found the chicken rubbery/chewy and didn't finish our meals. It's obviously a well known place given the amount of customers however we didn't enjoy the food. The ambience and service was great.

This is the real thing, the Tom Yum soup with prawns (after which the restaurant is named?) was eye-wateringly good! Go for the coconut soup if you can't stand the heat, but I really enjoyed mine, also the Penang curry with duck I had for my main. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere and the staff are helpful and friendly. Very good value all round, though I was a bit disappointed they didn't have the fresh spring rolls. An excuse to go back? I would, gladly.

I’ve been intending to visit Tom Yum for quite a while but never quite managed it. So last week a spur of the moment takeaway. Place was heaving (thurs night) but was warmly welcomed and provided food as promised 30 mins later. Food was fine but I always think Thai loses something via takeaway. I intend to return and eat in.

I really do not want to write a review as it is difficult to get a table at Tom Yum already but I really have to! This has to be the best Thai restaurant around. We have been here many many times and never ever been disappointed. We are all vegetarian and get all our dishes without fish sauce and their oblige without a fuss. The food is the tastiest ever and service is always brilliant. Well done to you guys but get a bigger place now!!!

What a great find! I live in Berkhamsted but was told about the Tom Yum and wanted to give it a go. Unlike some Thai restaurants in the area the food tasted freshly cooked and the sauces homemade rather than bought from a supermarket! Also some of the dishes have a real kick! My 2 chilli rated (1 to 3) basil, ginger and beef stir fry packed a punch. Great service too. The other nice thing is the restaurant interior isn't laden with tacky adornments such as shiny buddhas and lanterns. Looking forward to returning soon.

First visit here and loved it. Quite rustic and cafe feel so rather noisy if you want a quiet meal out. Service prompt and all food was excellent and freshly cooked.

Tom Yum is always good value. The staff are lovely. The set lunch is excellent value but the a la Carte isn’t expensive.

We frequent this place quite often and can confidently say that I have never had a bad meal or bad service at this restaurant. The family owners are cheerful and accommodating and the food is freshly cooked with top quality ingredients. The simple, homely interior is relaxing and informal and all are welcome here. The Pad Thai is amazing and my daughter had the Beef Massaman curry which was so delicious she is already planning her next trip to Tom Yum so she can have it again. Although we normally come for the fabulous value lunch specials, dinner was very reasonable and we left very full after four meals for under £50 (tap water to drink from bottle and a jug that were conscientiously refilled throughout the meal without needing to request more).

Had a meal here with my partner on a weekday evening. The restaurant was slightly busy downstairs but we just seemed to be forgotten about. Food was tasty but took a long time to come out. Tried to get waitresses attention many time but was ignored. In the end I went up to the bar/serving area to pay.

One of the best restaurants in Bucks. Well decorated, helpful and friendly staff. Fantastic food, great choice on the menu., been many times, always had a great meal, lunch or dinner. Would highly recommend.

The food here is lovely but it is definitely not cheap but I have tended to find that most Thai restaurants seem to work out to be quite an expensive night out. The Pad Thai is excellent. the restaurant itself is also quite small so on a busy night it can be quite cramped so I would not recommend it for a cosy couples evening unless you want an excuse to get closer.

Wow....food, service and atmosphere was incredible. I will be returning again very soon with a lot more friends to show them this absolutely amazing hidden gem....

Tom Yum is just the kind of eating place our family love. We've been here as a couple, with family, for Mothers Day and most recently to introduce two sets of friends to our favourite Thai restaurant.

Slightly expensive its till worth it for the quality. Typical Thai menu with a few specials and definitely worth visit. Service was okay with some friendlier than others!

What’s not to like. Charming staff. Delicious food. The yellow curry is the best you will ever taste. I defy you to find better. Lunches are amazing value. You better book else you won’t get in.

Can't speak too highly of this place. Very busy but attentive service none the less. Excellent Thai food at reasonable prices. Unpretentious but wonderful menu of spicy delicacies. Recommend the jungle carry. I had the vegetarian version. Also the seabass was absolutely superb.

This restaurant has been fully booked when we have tried to get a table before. I can see why - the food was delicious and we particularly like the Tom yum soup. Booked in advance to ensure a table and took an early sitting. We will definitely be going again.

We were a party of 4 out for dinner on Saturday evening, we had booked a table fortunately. The place was really buzzing with all of the downstairs tables full. We were quickly taken upstairs to our table, most of the tables here were also full. Our waitress quickly took our drinks order and in a friendly manner. Our food order was taken in good time and service throughout was very efficient and friendly. Our starters came quickly and were delicious. The main meal followed in good time and again was excellent, with good size portions. None of us could find anything at fault throughout the evening, well done to all of the staff for making our evening so pleasant, we will be coming back again soon.

We've been going to Tom Yum for a few years now and it's deserving of a positive review. We normally go at lunch time when they have a less expensive menu, however the food has always been some of the best we have had anywhere, and certainly the best in south Bucks. Highly recommended, and very friendly service.

So pleased you have had one bad recent review from one obviously unreasonable customer (Eleven bills for eleven seats.... Are they serious?) . It makes the other reviews so much more believable and enjoyable. We love this family restaurant. Shut your eyes, turn the heat up and you're back in Thailand. Top marks !

We , family of 5 , visited this lovely restaurant for the first time last week and were very impressed with quality of food and level of service we received . Everything was freshly cooked , light and absolutely delicious ! I can’t believe we...

Took 15 mins to get drinks, the last plate of food (simple pad Thai) arrived just in time to see half the party finished their meals. Waiter managed to spill a whole bottle of sprite on my mobile and down my top and trousers.

Greeted by a warm welcome. Food is so fresh and beautifully presented. Fantastic value for money and the portions are just right. Head and shoulders above the other Thai places in the area. Can't wait to come again.

Very close family friends who lives local took me & my eight years old son there. Restaurant was crowded little simple but clean place staff were polite Thai owner was there and actively taking part from attending to serving her customers. About the food what can I say from starter to dessert everything were perfect taste still lingering in my mouth and made my mouth watery. Had tom yum gong soup for starter my son had fried calamari amazing, had ginger & chilli prawn with sticky rice and pad Thai excellent taste so light and freshly made. Banana fritter with vanilla ice cream in dessert and my son has lemon sorbet both were heavenly delicious. One of our friend had Raspberry sorbet and I could smell the Raspberries a crossed the table. Can’t wait to go back again even if I have drive from Manchester just to visit the restaurant I wouldn’t mind worth it

We get takeaway from here once every couple of months - definitely one of the best Thai restaurants in the area. Everything tastes fresh and properly cooked.

Great lunch on Sunday. Family of 2 adults and 2 teens we had a starter and a main each with rinks, Bill came to just over £50. Nice quality meal at reasonable price for authentic Thai meal. Will be back 3rd time

We popped into Tom Yum for lunch. The food was exceptional, and it included the standard Thai dishes plus some fantastic specials which we tried and loved. I'd thoroughly recommend eating here, but best to book a table!

Best pad thai i have had in a long time, my favourite dish! Friendly service, I've always had a good experience here.

We booked in advance for a table for 4 for Mother’s Day and were given the option of seating at 12 o’clock or 2 o’clock so opted for the 12. It’s understandable for these strict booking times on such a popular day but it was sad to see so many people without bookings being turned away despite us finishing our meal and leaving by 1.15pm with the reserved tables remaining empty. Maybe they should have a 15 min leeway of reservation time and then give the table away. Anyway, as always, the meal and service was impeccable and this is my favourite restaurant, serving the best Thai food in Bucks and I am reluctant to share this find for fear of it always being fully booked!
