This is a brilliant place for an enjoyable dinner. The staff were so welcoming and offered complimentary green tea and smiles. The chicken katsu don was delicious. Food intolerances were immediately taken into account. Highly recommend!

Not sure how Tokyo gets 5 star reviews. Bang in the centre of town. Their food should be great. Saying that my worst meal ever was in Chinatown. The staff were very nice if a bit tired after the Chinese new year day. I’ve had many many superior bento boxes. Also the place really needs a revamp. It’s looking very tired. I like the printed eco tuna ethics etc but that’s not enough. I won’t be back there’s too much good competition for japanese near by.

Went for dinner here, the atmosphere was cosy and the service good, the food was good but I thought the rice could have been better, it was a little dry, overall lovely experience. Good spot for a casual meal.

I came here to try out their Gyudon and its probably the best Gyudon I have tried in London. They offer large portion size free of charge (Regular size and Large Size are the same prices). Unlike other Gyudons I tried in London, every pieces of beef in the Gyudon here are delicious and not over-chewy, the Gyudon here is not too wet too, which is good, hence 5 star for the food. The restaurant itself is built with a Japanese wooden construction theme, which stands out well in the middle of London, scoring 5/5 for atmosphere of the restaurant. Furthermore, they don't take tips or add service charge to the bill, thus 5 star for the service. They only open after 5pm on most of the weekdays and their website says they dont take online reservation, but their restaurant is quite big and I had no trouble getting a table walking in for dinner.

Good food quality, delightful sushi, friendly staff, and tipping is discouraged. We will definitely come back.

The food and interior are very authentic. We visited Tokyo Diner in 2020 and 2022, both times it was amazing. The staff is very polite.

Very good for gluten allergies, as they have a guide of gluten contents of the dishes in the back of the menu. Also very attentive staff and quick service. Rice is very nice.

I had a chicken Katsu curry &rice, However, it was very cold. I can not understand. I can still understand if it is lukewarm. WHY COLD? And even though they say “We do not take any tips”, their food is expensive. I mean their price is like included tips. I've never been to Japan so I can't comment on authenticity, but this is the best Japanese restaurant I've ever tried. Every dish I have tried so far has been splendid and I keep going back to the salmon nigiri. The staff is friendly and they all speak Japanese. It is very tight inside but food comes fairly quickly so you're never waiting for too long.

This place is wonderful. It's been open for years and years and it has good food in generous portions. Although I regret the absence of the onion don (gone for years now) it still has lots of good stuff, friendly staff and doesn't allow tipping. I heartily recommend it.

Lovely food, staff and experience! We had the tofu katsu, chicken katsu and the udon ramen. We are everything! The service was quick and everyone was so polite. I would definitely eat here again! 👌🏾

We had super high hopes for this place as it has super good reviews. The food was alright though. We had several bento boxes, the Udon soup and the tofu curry and it was all just very average.

Small, Japanese diner - it has a very cosy, warm atmosphere. The service was great - free Japanese green tea + refills. The waiter was very kind and helpful with the orders, we had specific dietary requirements which he tried his best to meet. The food was okay value for money, would recommend to try out. They also offer free larger portions of rice.

日本の方へ向けて 2階席は日本料理店のように静かな雰囲気でした。 海外なのにこれでいいのか！？と思うほどですが、こちらとしては落ち着いて食べられる空間だったかと思います。 ちなみに1階席はにぎわっていました。 日本の居酒屋より少し静かなレベルです。 ざるそばと親子丼を食べました。 親子丼は絶品です！ 安定の美味しさでまるで日本でご飯を食べているかのようでした。 ざるそばはコシもう少しあってほしい、つゆがあと少し濃かったらなと感じましたがイギリスでこれだけ美味しくあれば最高です。

Love coming here for lunch for sushi and udon noodles. Conveniently located near Leicester Square tube station. Small yet quaint and romantic. The toilet is upstairs.

I love this place and their food. I always have the chicken katsu curry (its so tasty- the best i have ever had), my partner always has the chicken teriyaki bento box (also amazing) and we also recently tried the chicken don katsu curry which did not disappoint, SO tasty!! They don't take reservations but you do not have to wait that long - even if you have to wait though, it is really worth it. We have been dining in this place for a very long time and i recommend it to everyone.

La Chinatown di Londra è sicuramente uno dei quartieri che nonostante la sua popolarità tra i turisti regala ancora alcune chicche di cucina asiatica veramente autentica. Questo è il caso di questo ristorante giapponese che si trova proprio in uno degli incroci principali del quartiere. Abbiamo mangiato qui con alcuni amici appena tornati da un viaggio in Giappone e hanno confermato i sapori assolutamente autentici dei piatti. Atmosfera da locanda giapponese e piatti abbondanti e caldi. Sul menù si trovano principalmente portate non esattamente convenzionali per gli standard europei che la cotoletta Tonkatsu, i soba freddi e il curry di carne giapponese. Prezzi assolutamente nella media per essere a Londra(oserei dire quasi economici). La fila fuori e d'obbligo:)

Nice to discover an amazing authentic Japanese restaurant in the heart of Soho! Using Japanese ingredients to make delicious dishes with a very varied and appetising menu on offer. My favourite was 揚げ出し豆腐。The broth was incredible, just like I was back in Japan 🥹 No wait time needed for a table, and staff were very organised and quick with taking orders. Will definitely be visiting here again! 🫶🏻

Pretty authentic and delicious Japanese food. Somehow did not have the same footfall like some other places even though it is in a very busy Touristy area . Service was attentive and courteous. We had a bento box and a curry udon for mains and shared an appetizer of chicken karaage. Everything was fresh and scrumptious. The karaage chicken was very crunchy and delicious. They also don't add the optional service charge like other places in London. Would visit again if I return to the area.

A small place with a line at the door, no reservations accepted. Not a very comfortable place, tables are too close to each other, it is said that the best chicken katsu in London is here, which I disagree with. It is ok and fair, just that. One thing I don't like here though is that they charge the gratuity and to me to be charged that the service should be at least amazing

It's a hidden gem Japanese restaurant in Soho / China Town. The food was very nice & authentic. The atmosphere was great, quite similar to any Japanese restaurants in Shibuya or Shinjugu. Service was good too.

I stumbled upon this place on a Saturday night after a day of exploring the city and was craving Asian food. I got here around 6pm and was seated right away since I was a solo diner. They even had a table set up for parties of one, which I thought was cute.I ordered a Chicken Katsu Curry, which came out quite quickly. It was a huge portion that I couldn't finish by myself.The service is friendly and everyone speaks Japanese (even those not ethnically Japanese, which I thought was nice).I would definitely come here again but not as a large group or during peak hours, as there were so many parties waiting for a table by the time I left.

Let's start by saying that this restaurant offers truly Japanese dishes, it has not been Westernized at all including available methods of payment (cash only).They employ Japanese students in London to add to the authenticity of the experience so expect some challenges with their English, however, it should not really matter, just pretend you are in Japan and focus on the main reason you chose this restaurant.There is usually a line outside the restaurant yet it should not take longer than 20 minutes to get seated, just expect to queue up for a little and instead look forward to really good food.Final note: tuna is not served at this restaurant for some very well-grounded reasons.

Nuestra segunda visita y no cambiamos nuestro pedido porque estábamos muy impresionados la última vez. Frijoles Edamame, sopa de miso, un pollo y un cerdo al curry katsu (IMO cerdo katsu es el mejor) y una cerveza Asahi. Ofrecen té japonés de cortesía, se complace en ofrecer agua del grifo (figura en el menú de bebidas) y las porciones son generosas y abundantes. No, no está en un entorno moderno y elegante, pero, francamente, estaba demasiado ocupado disfrutando de mi comida como para notarlo.

Open until late, Tokyo Diner is a great venue for an improvised meal in the heart of China Town.The food, yet simple, is fresh and flavoursome, and tastes even better when accompanied with a small carafe of their cold sake.The staff is dedicated and friendly and the bill never goes through the roof. Definitely a nice experience for foodies.

A haven for eating well solo. Cozy atmosphere with kind service. Though busy on all occasions I have stepped in at dinner time, the liveliness has been delightful rather than disruptive.

This was the second visit for one in our group and this time he, and also all of us first-timers were very satisfied. Tea is brought to the table as soon as you arrive. And the food comes very quickly - even a bit too quickly as the place is nice and you could really enjoy tea and atmosphere longer! We had nagiri sets and chicken Katsu Don. Food is served in beautiful dishes. Nagiri sets all good, wasabi very very hot! Chicken was not crispy at all in Katsu Don, that was a disappointment. Mild taste but very good. The menu states that all staff speaks Japanese and no tips allowed.

At 11:00 pm when we walked through the door there was only one table vacant. This was on a weekday evening. We were offered tea as we sat down and the wait staff were patient as we read through the entire menu. We ordered a soba bowl and Maki. The food is light and fresh with good portions and at a reasonable cost.

Popular with Japanese diners which must be a good sign, and very busy. Reservations not possible. Lots of people were turned away, but we were lucky enough to grab a table at this tiny restaurant. Katsu curry, salmon teriyaki box, and mixed maki all delicious, and amazing value for London - approx £50 for 3 people. Portions good. Tipping not allowed! Great for a quick, tasty meal, but don’t take too long as there will be plenty of others who want your table! Sign had changed to Japanese, which threw us initially, but very glad we found it.

From the moment I step in, I felt I was in Japan! The atmoshpere, the japanese staff, the matcha greent tea served at the table ... and, of course, the amazing food!

Horrible food, poor service. This is not Japanese food at all. I felt sick after having eaten here. It looks like tourists use here as it’s in a convenient location. I can’t believe someone gave them any stars. I don’t want to give even one star.

I went there in the afternoon. The food was moderately priced and decent, but the service left much to be desired. The waiters — most of whom seemed to be Chinese rather than Japanese — tended to saunter around and treat customers with a lackadaisical attitude. The way some of them engaged with customers (e.g. patting the customer on the arm, avoiding eye contact, and so on) was highly unpleasant and not to say unprofessional. After I made the payment, the waiter dashed off with the card machine without saying thank you.

I love Japanese food and someone recommended that I try this place, so I stopped for dinner with my partner. I had the Katsu Don. Service was friendly but I was disappointed by the food. The batter on the pork was soggy. The rice seemed too soft and wet (possibly overcooked?). Flavour wasn't great. I would not return.

Le restaurant est beau, on se retrouve véritablement au Japon. Décor et service minimaliste mais c'est ce qu'on demande. Les plats son magnifique et délicieux. Les menus expliquent quelques anecdotes culturelles. Seul bémol, le temps d'attente parfois un peu long et obligé de se faire en extérieur car manque de place.

This place is a little gem. We ate the most delicious pork katsu with a few extras as a pre theatre dinner. The staff were very friendly and the food was served speedily. We had allowed far too much time. Excellent. Highly recommend.

We take it granted that we will be charged 12.5% service charge automatically on top of our bill when we dine in London. This restaurant will not accept your tip in accordance with the Japan's custom. There was no hidden pirce hike or whasoever in the menu to substitute this charge in a different way.

We had a great meal at Tokyo Diner. The food came quickly and was some of the nicest Japanese food we had had in a while. It was also incredible value for money with the lunch selections having a great variety to choose from and perfect sizes. Would definitely be coming back next time we are around the area!

I've been to Tokyo Diner a couple of times while on trips to London, after it was recommended by a friend. It really reminds me of eating in izakayas in Japan, and has a great, basic menu with a good selection of sushi and hot dishes. I've had their sashimi and a salmon don as well as a few side dishes, and loved all of it.

I’ve been visiting here pretty well since it first opened about 25 years ago. It’s always been excellent and everybody I’ve taken there loves the place. The staff are wonderfully friendly, the food is fabulous and the prices are surprisingly affordable.

Pedí un oyakodon que estaba absolutamente delicioso y exactamente como recuerdo su sabor cuando visité Japón. Un tamaño de porción abundante para un 10 a un precio razonable. 20 (y la política de no propinas lo hace aún más barato). Realmente recomendado si quieres una comida japonesa rápida y asequible pero aún muy sabrosa.

The restaurant is homely, and the waitress was polite. Granted, she didn't talk much, but I prefer this way instead of the American style when they're in your face all the time (I came here to eat, not to talk about my life story). Free tea that can be refilled if you want, and nice views from the top floor.

After reading some of the reviews reporting the unfriendly staff, I was unsure whether it was worth visiting this restaurant. Our experience today was very good. We were immediately shown to our table and hot tea (for the adults) and cold water (for the children) followed swiftly. The delicious food arrived quickly and demolished by everyone. Even a mishap of spilt tea was dealt with efficiently by two waitresses who rushed to assist us and to ensure our daughter was not scalded by the hot drink. We would definitely return for a casual dining experience.

I would not recommend dining at Tokyo Diner to anyone. The food is heavily overpriced for what you receive. I was completely disgusted by the behavior of the staff, when we were dinning my partner accidentally had spilt some of her dinner and one by one the staff would pop out and laugh, completely unacceptable! When I raised this on leaving the staff member pretended to not understand what I was saying and ignored my compliant completely.
