As always, lovely venue, lovely staff and great food, they never fail to please. Thoroughly recommended.

My first visit was for lunch with friends. As always the service and staff were excellent and the tables were beautifully laid with linen table cloths and napkins and the whole restaurant is in a class of its own. We chose from the set lunch menu which had plenty of choices and very good value for money. I had the fish and chips which, to be totally honest, was slightly disappointing as the home made chips were not particularly crisp and the fish batter was very hard. The dessert trolley was divine with unusual choices.My second visit in the same week was on a Saturday evening with different friends and everything was absolutely first class. It is my favourite restaurant by far and I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough.

As always the food was so tasty and well presented on both my visits in June and July. The staff are always friendly and polite. Excellent hygiene levels and tables well spaced out. Great ambience. Can't wait for my next visit! Already planning to hold my 60th there in a year and a half!

A wonderful dining experience - as always! The food was excellent, in generous quantities, beautifully cooked, the wine was sensational - handpicked for us and in line with our menu choices, the service warm and attentive yet not overly intrusive, the ambiance low key and lovely - a feeling of great contentment surrounded the place. Cant think of anywhere I'd rather go!!

Again visited this fine establishment to share a Chateaubriand and a fine bottle of Roija, and they did not let me down. This is a very professional establishment, and I will return in 2 weeks.

My wife and I have been to Toby Cottage MANY TIMES. In fact I proposed to my wife there. Why I hear you ask. It is simply due to the ambience, the owners and staff. We love everything about the restaurant especially the fact that there just aren't enough proper, independent restaurants around anymore. And to counter the nonsense reviews moaning about the desert trolly, old school, who cares, that is the point. Dining at Toby is exactly how dining was and in my mind still should be. There are to many plastic, bash through the covers as quick as you can restaurants out there with mediocre food at best. You may well think this is a review from an oldy, not so. I started going to Toby in my mid thirties and am only just 50 now. I haven't even touched on the food. Simply brilliant. Quality of produce simply can not be denied. Freshness, well cooked and stunning choices always. And then there is the desert Trolly. It is SERIOUSLY REFRESHING to actually be able to see what is on offer which is a massive plus. How many times have you ordered a desert that simply does not cut the mustard. Trust me people go to Toby. Relax, let the guys do there thing, serve you as well as you will ever have been served anywhere before and you will not be disappointed. That I can promise you.

We wanted to thank Toni and his team for looking after us wonderfully at our recent family gathering at the Toby Cottage. Everyone was very impressed with the menu and the food chosen, including the tailoring of the menu to the children. Those who were new to the Toby Cottage spoke highly of the meal, so could become new customers. Toni, thank you for an enjoyable, and relaxed, occasion. We will be back soon. Alan

We were staying at a nearby hotel where we were disappointed with the food and really wish we had known about this restaurant sooner. What great service and delicious quality food we had. So much on the menu and lovely dessert trolley, again with lots of choice. Would definitely return if we ever go back to Ripley. Highly recommended. First time eating here and it will not be the last. Honest restaurant which was clean and tidy with good service. The food all 5 of us had we all really enjoyed, it was nice to see a menu which had some good solid options which you do not seem to see nowadays. They offered a bread basket selection with freshly baked bread which was still hot !! Lovely ! Everyone had a starter I had the calamari which was fresh and came with a very tasty harrisa mayonnaise. We had a choice of daily specials which I like. The veal chop cooked with butter and sage was excellent. We had cauliflower in a cheese sauce browned on top I could have eaten all of it myself just delicious. Mange tout and spinach with saute potatoes. Yes, there is a sweet trolley how wonderful I can see just what I am going to get, again very good. I really do look forward to our return.

How funny to read the last review '1970 throwback' it seems the reviewer missed the point and the charm of this wonderful restaurant. Lovely old building with low beamed ceiling, for us the original sweet and drinks trolleys were simply charming and added to the experience. The menu was extensive with a choice of set menu or a la carte. All six of chose from the a la carte and enjoyed every course, the best food we have had for a while, so good we immediately booked in again. The team were amazing, so helpful and kept the drinks flowing. We had a thoroughly good time and look forward to retuning.

It felt like we had stepped back in time, very dated decor, music that was really annoying, a sweet trolley and chocolates with the bill! To be honest the menu was huge, overpriced, save for the set menu, and very mediocre...We would not return.

Selected this restaurant based on good reviews and convenience for meeting London relatives for a celebratory lunch. We were not disappointed, good value set menu or traditional a la carte. All our dishes were well prepared and served by friendly staff. One of our number ordered the beef wellington as this was available as a single item, rather than the usually "for two" offering. Reasonably priced for this quality, mains around £20-£25. Side vegetables charged separately, I prefer inclusive pricing. Will definitely visit again.

I think I went to this restaurant when I was a student in Guildford back in the 1970s. It certainly looked familiar, as the decor seems very much from that time, as does the regular appearance of a foot long peppermill. Even the staff could have been around back then. We chose the Toby Cottage for a June lunch thanks to its convenient location, including proximity to Wisley gardens, to meet long established good friends now that indoor dining and meeting up is once again allowed in England. The decision taken over the Jovial Sailor was based on the many very positive reviews we found on Opentable and Tripadvisor. Sadly, not everything you read should be believed, or at least taken with a pinch of salt and viewed through the optics of who are your fellow diners. It seems the Toby Cottage attracts a certain type of regular local (confirmed by how they were greeted and welcomed back), for whom maybe the '70s was their heyday, too. Between the 4 of us and 8 different dishes consumed - 4 starters and 4 main courses, not one was as it should have been. The fried brie starter was all crust and very little unctious melted cheese. The pate didn't come with enough of their apparently popular melba toast (another blast from the past!). Two different lamb dishes, both ordered pink were over cooked. The liver and bacon was a huge plate of overcooked liver - a travesty when it was tender and pricey calves' liver - with a single bacon rasher that wasn't cooked crisp, as promised. We didn't bother with the multi tiered dessert trolley (need I say more!!!). One thing you cannot fault if you are a trencherman is the portion sizes, at least no harking back to nouvelle cuisine, from a different previous era. No dish was terrible, but nothing was quite perfect so overall very disappointing and regrettably unmemorable. Service was also comically hit and miss. We were left alone for long periods of time, frustrating when the tap water jug is placed well beyond arm's reach on a separate table and you need to don your mask each time you stand up, but great for our catch up chat with privacy. Yet at other times we had 3 members of the waitstaff attending and answering different questions. Sadly, this meal will not rate as a highlight of this so far difficult year when we were so looking forwarding to dining out again like we used to. I don't think I will be back for another 45 years.

Even allowing for all the restrictions of Covid, today’s visit to the Toby Cottage was very disappointing!.. So many minor issues that all add up to a poor experience:Initially we were not offered the wine list and then, when we asked for it, the wine we chose was not available.The fish dish was missing the mushy peas as described on the menu. When we asked, we were told they weren’t on the menu, so we re-read the menu.... and they were on it!The calves liver dish was also missing the crispy bacon as described on the menu.Neither our starters nor our main courses arrived together despite us only being a party of four people.‘Seasonal vegetables” in June consisted of swede cabbage and roast potatoes??!!The quality of the food could not be described as anything better than ‘acceptable’.Wine and water wasn’t poured for us.We didn’t stay for coffee and won’t be rushing back!Safety visors were being worn like hats, providing no protection to customers!

We visited Toby Cottage for a birthday celebration on 18 May 2021, and had a wonderful dinner. The staff are full of charm, and really make you smile during your time at Toby Cottage. The menu is full of variety, with influences from Spain, Italy and France. We particularly like the individual portions of beef wellington or salmon en croute available at Toby Cottage, which you don't usually find offered as a single portion in a lot of restaurants. I highly recommend Toby Cottage, the food is delicious and of a very high quality, and the staff are extremely friendly and attentive. We will most definitely be returning! Thank you to the wonderful staff at Toby Cottage for looking after us so well. We can't wait to revisit!

Went there for a nice dinner whilst visiting Ripley. A very charming unassuming little building, kept very true to its original features which made it very quaint. The staff were so friendly and attentive we could want for nothing, nothing was too much trouble - we were the first table of the evening but the restaurant soon filled and the service was still excellent. Food was simply amazing! Honestly could not recommend enough. Beautiful display of deserts but we were too stuffed to have any! Would love it return if we are in the area again.

We chose Toby Cottage for lunch, as some years have passed since we last paid a visit here. Tables are well spaced with doors and windows open to allow adequate air flow. Service was exemplary: friendly but not fussy, and our fish choices (whitebait starter and tuna main course) were tasty and satisfying with well sized portions. Seeing the dessert trolley trundling between tables brought back memories of the past as it tempts diners with its colourful and calorific selection. We settled instead for coffee to complete this highly enjoyable lunch experience. Recommended together with the benefit of parking spaces available at the rear of the building.

Lovely to be able to visit Toby Cottage again. Once again the food was exceptional, the staff all really friendly, welcoming and polite. Great value for money and love the ambience. Can't wait to return again for lunch in a month's time!

Wow ..!This restaurant is the very best .I have just moved in to the Ripley Village and always wanted a good restaurant within walking distance and I never believe I would be lucky enough to have the best !!I had the beef Wellington on Toni’s recommendation and cannot wait to have it again .Thank you Toby Cottage and I will see you again very soon.

This place is old-fashioned, not in a dated or tired way but in a way that is has a traditional style and attitude. The staff are exceptionally warm and welcoming, even it is for a first visit, and the main dining area (although a bit low in headroom!) isn't too stuffy but smart. We tried the festive menu and the food was great, the right size and tasty. The restaurant has a dessert trolley (long time since I've seen one of them!) which was also very welcomed! A very pleasant evening indeed.

This was our second visit to this restaurant in 2020 and it was very good . On arrival you are treated as a special customer even though we are not regulars. We had a nice table at the end of the restaurant.The meal was delicious. We started with scallops which are always favourite of ours. My Beef Wellington and my wife's venison main corses were superb and very filling in my case. This was rounded off nicely by a plentiful choice from the sweet trolley.We certainly hope to return in 2021 for another special occasion.

Amazing place, amazing service and amazing food! If your undecided on going then go here! The guys that work here are amazing, they are accommodating/ friendly and on hand to help whatever you want! I’m not from ripley but these little gems are very hard to find in this day an age, yes it may not be modern decor but the flavours make up for it. We stopped by Toby Cottage based on their positive reviews on Tripadvisor, and were not disappointed. The menu on the website was up to date and features a wide variety of starters and mains. They also have an extensive list of daily specials. The food was excellent; the fillet steak was cooked perfectly to medium (as requested)!! The portion sizes were good, which let us enjoy three courses without feeling overeaten.To top it off, the waiting staff are very friendly and attentive, which made the dining experience very enjoyable. Special mention must be given to Matthew, who did a great job serving us on his first week on the job.

A good variety of tapas for casual dinning with friends. Plenty of food choose and drinks. Good value for money.

First time back to the Toby since coming out of lockdown to celebrate my son’s birthday, as always food and service excellent , very good social distancing, plenty of hand sanitisers. We felt very relaxed and comfortable and enjoyed a lovely evening with our family, will be back very soon.

Father in law 84th birthday party. 8 of us had the private room upstairs. We did not order from the menu. Instead we had a selection of Tapas. Ham, cheese, octopus, squid, sardines, etc etc. The food was absolutely superb. I have been to Spain many times but I can rarely remember having better food. The wine was superb and the service was brilliant. Very friendly and efficient. I cannot recommend this place high enough 10/10.

I don't see why this restaurant gets any decent reviews. The food was poor to mediocre. Some of it had either been badly cooked or microwaved. The service was poor. We won't be back.

Our enforced absence from Toby Cottage made our visit on 26 July even more special. Social distancing was strictly observed throughout our meal. The Sunday lunch menu was as varied as ever and the quality of the good was fantastic as usual. Portions are always just right and of course the sweet trolley is always the absolute highlight for us! It was great to see them back in business and may this remain the case for the foreseeable future.

Our first visit since lockdown to our favourite restaurant and despite any reservations regarding safety measures we enjoyed a wonderful evening with good food, wine and service as usual.

We asked The Toby to accommodate us for a big birthday celebration. We asked for a specific menu ahead of the day. Social distancing was essential for our two couples. It was wonderfully done. As usual the food was fantastic. The service was great as always, staff friendly and courteous. Hygiene levels were high, everything was clean, automatic sanitiser available on the wall, waiters wearing visors and I noticed the waiter cleaned the menus after we handed them back. It was quiet being a Monday lunchtime but the tables were spaced out and we felt totally relaxed and confident in the safely measures they are taking. We will definitely be back again very soon!

Had a splendid evening last night (Saturday 29th February 2020) at The Toby Cottage, we shared an utterly superb Chateaubriand accompanied by a perfectly decanted Rioja. We started with Cornish scallops wrapped in Parma ham, amazing from start to finish.

Once again this restaurant gave us an evening to remember. Joined by our very best friends for a joint birthday celebration we decided on the Toby Cottage from a short list of one. Once again we were rewarded with a wonderful evening with mouth watering food and wine and excellent service. Our evening was rounded off with a lovely birthday cake and the staff joining together to sing happy birthday - such talent.

What a fantastic meal we had last night for Valentine's Day! We've tried several favourites over the years on special days and always been disappointed. Not so this time! The service, food and ambiance were to their usual high standard and we were delighted with our whole experience! Well Done Toby Cottage on not taking advantage of a special day and delivering such a delicious meal with such friendly waiters. Thank you.

in the main the service is excellent, drinks served promptly, food orders taken and delivered as you would expect for the price, i dont feel the food lived up to the price, starters were ok but not superb, mains were 50/50 two fine, one terrible, three ok, the vegetables accompanying three of the mains were brussels and swede very 70s, not for this decade, I was recommended but wont return

I have been going to the Toby cottage for along time, you get greeted like an old friend. The staff are exceptional and the service is just perfect. The food wonderful but make sure you leave room for the desert trolley. Looking forward to my next visit Carol

I’ always think about this as an Italian - but the staff all seem to be Spanish! Still it is a lovely room and usually has a very jolly atmosphere. The staff are great fun and a bit cheeky in a good way. This is ‘old fashioned’ Italian - white cloths, sweet trolley groaning with things like oranges in some boozy liquid and Black Forest gateaux. The set menu at lunch was a bargain. A bit hit and miss on quality but its all a hoot. About £50 a head for set menu and lots of wine. We go maybe once a year and I’ll be back!

Disappointing service and food. We had a really bad first experience here. Poor service from beginning to end. The restaurant is very cramped and noisy and despite a few cheery staff the service is very poor. The food is not great and definitely not worth the price. We eat out several times a week and this is not somewhere we would ever come back to. The menu looks great but the flavour and quality isn’t there at all. And definitely don’t expect to see a dessert trolley in this day and age. It’s lacking a lot of finesse for the price.

Despite a very busy period leading up to Christmas we managed to book our final visit to the Toby this year. This has been our favourite for many years and as usual we were not disappointed. We have always be rewarded with excellent service and coupled with delicious food and a very good wine list our evening was wonderful.

Never fails to deliver! Yet another wonderful evening spent here this time a small (4) group of ladies having a pre Christmas meal out. Great food, atmosphere and service. See you again soon! (Like Thursday)

Great food and service. The staff are always friendly, whilst remaining efficient but you never feel rushed.

This is a lovely old restaurant, shades of an old coaching inn, in a 16th century building. It has lots of charm and the staff and the food build on this charm. The menu is a 'blast from the past'. It was full of old favourites, which judging by how busy the restaurant was, goes down well with the customers. I had lobster soup and it was served with flaming brandy - a nice touch, followed by dover sole. Both were extremely good. The dessert trolley had many wonderful calorific desserts which made for a lovely end to the meal. The service is good and the staff are all very helpful. The bill is quite expensive, but for the quality of the food and service, it is good value. Definitely worth a visit.

Old oak beams, lovely ambience, friendly smiling waiters. A very extensive menu choice and extensive wine list categorized by country not red/white. We had soup and deep fried brie coated in breadcrumbs. The portion size was double what I would have expected but unfortunately the brie was cold and too hard in the centre, but the soup (carrot and coriander) which my husband had was good. We followed with Chateaubriand for two which was delicious. The mushrooms however were almost raw. We had side orders of carrots (exceptionally sweet) and chargrilled vegetables. The sweet trolley was very impressive but we were too full to eat any more! The waiters were attentive and humerous and we had a lovely evening despite the aforementioned.

Just returned from our first visit to this excellent restaurant. We had the Christmas 2 course set lunch which was delicious and very good value served by staff who were friendly and amazing. Will definitely return in the near future

The Toby Cottage is a wonderful restaurant and has been one of our favourites for many years. It has a lively charm about its structure and decor (low beams) but very warm and inviting. The food, wine and service are excellent and overall a wonderful dining experience.

Disgusting attitude! Very rude waiter! Didn’t know that can’t order pint without lunch ,just to wait for someone before order one...The waiter didn’t even say good afternoon and advice me to wait in my car...? I’m really shocked! No way to visit it again! It’s strange for small neighbourhood pub!

Had a lovely if pricey meal here. 2 of us, 2 courses each, one beer & 2 soft drinks & £100 with tip! However the food was lovely as were the staff.

My wife and I took some friends here for a 70th birthday treat. It is our favourite restaurant in the area and we usually dine here about 5/6 times a year. As usual the welcome, food, wine and service were excellent and capped of with a lovely cake.

I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant for Sunday Lunch, apart from the roast dinner there was a very good selection of other main courses as well as an excellent dessert trolley. The only downside was that the seating was rather cramped.

We went to celebrate a significant birthday and they were all one could ask. well looked after with good humour and full menu available for over 20 people!

Today I went with my family to celebrate my grandpas birthday. The food was very good until I received a raw piece of cod. I sent it back to the waiters and they took it to the kitchen. I received a apology however I don’t know if anything was given complimentary or taken off the bill as I was not made aware of this. I didn’t want to say anything to the person paying as I would have been embarrassed. It was such a shame that I felt let down by this one occasion when we have come for so many lovely family meals before

We had a perfect meal as it always is. Love the fresh bread and the good choice of vegetables. The bacon wrapped scallops were cooked perfectly.

I hosted friends who had never been but had heard me talking of it. On arrival was given the normal lovely greeting, then shown to our seats with the special style that i onley see at the Toby. we were going to have the Sunday Lunch but friends still wished to peruse the menu and wine list which all agreed looked good and of course all had noticed the Sweet Trolley. The Toby's decor is rustic with beams and some are low, it has an old world of elegance and charm complimented by the friendly staff who nothing seems any trouble at all.to attend to your needs. Friends prior to being served were very interested in the differing foods that were passing our table and also remarked on the use of silver service but without it being pretentious.Yes we did wine and dine having the full three course Sunday Lunch, YES we were full but who could resist the famous Sweet Trolley, we could not. Succulent food, lovely atmosphere and impeccable service, friends did agree without being asked when are we coming back. I must also mention the bathrooms which also are of the high standard of the Toby. Thank you for a very enjoyable lunchtime event.

Went again recently with girlfriends. The food was as tasty as ever and such a huge choice of desserts on the trolley! The setting if lovely, always enjoy a quick drink in the cosy bar upstairs. The service is always excellent, staff are polite and efficient but also have a sense of humour and make it more enjoyable. The Sunday set meal is excellent value! Will be back again soon!

Whenever we visit the Toby Cottage we are greeted by staff and made welcome by all before being shown upstairs to have a drink etc. Which is always a pleasant experience while we read the menu, which always takes time due to the large menu and specials explained by staff. When our meal is ready we are shown dounstairs. The food is always well presented and delicious. Overall a great evening or lunch. The Toby is always the restaurant we recommend to everyone.

A group of 20+ WI ladies came for the set menu and were delighted with the food, service and ambience. It does matter whether it's a party of 2 or 22, everything is always great

Love this place it’s how restaurants should be. Drinks in the bar while perusing the great menu, also there is a good selection of specials. This restaurant is a favourite of ours and when the opportunity allowed us to dine with close friends for a very special birthday (70th) we had no hesitation in deciding where to go.

We have been to this restaurant many times, and it is simply the most engaging restaurant in our part of Surrey. Ambiance, staff, food, wine, making a perfectly balanced occasion.

We’ve eaten here once before and we’re taken back by friends. The reception was brilliant and throughout the whole evening we were entertained by the excellent banter and repartee of the staff - sadly lacking in so many establishments these days.

Our visit for a birthday celebration was very enjoyable . The staff were friendly, helpful and very entertaining and the menu was excellent. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. Well done everyone! We will be back!

As always, the staff this evening were fantastic. They are so welcoming and have a good sense of humour. They made a big fuss of my mother in law (it was her 85th bday). The ambience was good and our food was great. Everyone enjoyed their meal and despite the large portions we couldn’t resist the sweet trolley.

My husband and I booked a table for a Sunday lunch in June. What a lovely restaurant! It is not a typical English Inn type but a Spanish family run restaurant in a old English style environment with laid back + dry humour service. It reminds me of Fawlty Tower (it's a complement though) in a good way with a great homely cooking. Desert buffet is a must. We'll be back for an special occasion and try their crepe suzette!

....but quite high prices in this charming old fashioned restaurant. Waiters in bow ties and black waistcoats provide expert and knowledgeable service

Lovely restaurant. Four of us went for lunch and chose from the set menu. £22.50 for three courses. Excellent food, silver service which was neither rushed nor slow - just right. Whitebait and roast pork delicious and the dessert trolley has to be seen to be believed - there were more thn 10 options. Staff were friendy without being officious. Can't recommend it highly enough. However, it is very popular with good reason so do book in advance.

Charming and friendly service in a traditional setting to have a homely dishes. Desert trolley is a must - I hope they will do a dessert buffet in the future, we’ll be back with a heart beat.

Took the family to Toby Cottage for a special birthday celebration and the whole evening was an absolute delight. Couldn't fault the staff, and the food was very good. I asked them to supply us with a surprise birthday cake for dessert and they really came up trumps with a delicious chocolate and cream affair. Would recommend to anyone looking for a special celebration.

Went for our wedding reception on the 30 May with 29 people. Well what can I say yet again an amazing evening and welcome. Everyone that came thoroughly enjoyed the time the meal the atmosphere everything about the place is just amazing thank you Tony and team for another great night
