Really nice pub, old character with fire, not many left like this. Sad to hear they don't do food, as the last time I visited 2 years ago it was fantastic place to eat.

Have been here a few times over the last couple weeks, and on my first visit, it did feel I walked into a very local only pub, but once in found it to be a nice quirky pub. Service was great and friendly, and nothing was any trouble. Food was lovely with a lovely piece of fish and chips that I struggled to finish.

Matt was a great host, really engaging, funny and great with kids keeping them entertained, thank you!

Lovely friendly pub. Wonderful curry night, great service (with a smile), really good value and the food is delicious. Curry Night is a regular treat for us!

A wonderful inviting pub with delicious food and very friendly atmosphere. Great to relax with a glass of wine or chat with mates over a beer. Excellent beer garden too. Also family friendly, what more could anyone ask.

We absolutely loved our dinner at the toad rock. Haven’t been since the change of management and WOW. Took my family (including my two under two year old children) and couldn’t recommend it enough. Food was insane. Atmosphere was lovely and welcoming. The manager even made an effort to help my crying toddler with some crayons and colouring. Such a great family pub. Highly recommend and will definitely be returning!

Reading all the wonderful comments, I was expecting something quite extraordinary. But it wasn't, and saying that I was disappointed of my visit is an understatement. The food was okay but not outstanding, the atmosphere was boring, the decoration corny, and nobody thought of cleaning the water that dogs had spilled all over the ground.

Bank holiday Monday quiz had to finish early doesn’t make sense when the pub has people willing to by drinks it’s crap .

Lovely family friendly pub, rocks next to it for great fun adults and kids! Could spend a good half day chilling in the pub garden and the rocks.

Went to see a band. First time at Toad Rock. Great atmosphere. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Didn’t try any food or need parking or wheelchair accessibility so can’t comment. The bar staff were fantastic, so friendly and speedy. When we arrived we saw a lot of families, there were outdoor activities. Will go back with children.

The Toadfest was great. Very helpful with wheelchair access and dog friendly. Everyone felt welcome especially as it was a very busy day for the staff. We will definitely return.

Friendly staff, good basic menu

Called in here a few times during my recent visit to Tunbridge Wells. One evening I enjoyed fish and chips for dinner. Other times I called in for a pint during the day. It’s a friendly, welcoming pub, attractive inside and set in a peaceful area. There’s a beer garden and patio and inside is nicely decorated. I found the staff and locals welcoming. The pub is dog friendly inside and out. Can definitely recommend the Toad Rock Retreat and hope to visit again before too long.

Great experience! Couldn’t fault it really, staff really friendly and happy to help. A member of my party was gluten free and the chef came out to explain our options and really put her mind at ease. Lovely pub garden - a real sun trap in the top garden - can’t wait to return with my girl friends!

Excellent traditional pub, named after the famous rocks, opposite. I probably had my first ever pint in this pub - the earlier incarnation before it was rebuilt after the fire - back in 1983. (Admittedly, I was only 16 🥺). We used to live in Bretland Road, only a short walk via Harmony Street, and Apsley Street. Back then, there was also the Toad Rock Tavern. For me, it's a short walk from the town centre, about 20 minutes. And you traverse the amazing Common.

The vegetarian fish was made with so much garlic that unless you want to keep vampires away I would not eat. The roast potatoes amd Yorkshire pudding was burnt. Not worth the price. Staff friendly and good choices of drinks but I would not ever eat there again. Nit worth the price.

The staff at The Toad Rock Retreat were fantastic in accommodating our walking group of 18 people last Saturday. They were so helpful and did brilliantly serving all our meals together. The food was delicious and excellent value. Megan was so helpful in dealing with our requirements and providing a gluten free option. Definitely recommend this great pub.

Fab afternoon in the toad rock retreat, lovely food, 5* service, lady behind the bar couldn’t be more helpful, great for dogs too, even got their own water bowl and treats! Not our first visit and certainly will visit again!! Highly recommend!

Went to the Toad for my birthday lunch. I was not disappointed. We arrived with 4 dogs in tow and was greeted by a very friendly lady whom we assume was Cath. We were shown to your table with menus. Our drinks order was taken very quickly, water for the dogs arrived along with biscuits for them. Our food order was taken and because 2 of us were not having buns with our food, a side of onion rings were added. The onion rings were delicious. The batter was so light and delicious that even the gluten intolerant one of us enjoyed one. All 4 of us had something different. The fish and chips should be renamed whale and chips. Again the fish was coated in the best batter we have ever tasted. The spicy vegan burger had just the right amount of spice, with fabulous chunky chips. The Toad burger went down well with the other half and the bunless Rocky Burger was enjoyed by the BIL... We didn't have room for desert!!! Thank you Toad Rock Retreat, great meal and exceptional host. Will definitely be back 😉

We (4 friends) on our way home from a weekend in the middle of the forest needed to have roast as it was sunday. We called sat and a lovely lady didnt mind that we have super bad reception and cut off and booked us....

It's brilliant , the only down side is the size of the queue while waiting for the cafe. But that's only due to how good the food and coffee is.

I was at a loose end and saw a sign for the local landmark known as 'Toad Rock'. I didn't know there a pub local to the area and so I felt obliged to pop in 😁 What a gorgeous little find! Full of character, an open log fire and Harvey's ~ I wish I lived local to this pub. My first time of visiting but I will definitely return to sample the food

Had a lovely meal on 5 October with friends. Piping hot freshly cooked food. Refreshed menu, friendly service and enthusiastic chef. Massive fish and chips, great burgers, the BEST chips and homemade lasagne. Reasonable price. All went down well with some house Merlot. Definitely recommend.

Nice place, good selection of beverages, didn't stay long but the outside space was nice and locals seamed friendly, small question over the layout of the men's toilet where the urinals can be seen clearly from outside the room and a chair has been positioned in just the right place, but hay nothing a door being closed can't fix. Toad Rock Sunday roast is back!! Gorgeous roast lamb with all the trimmings and a bottle of wine. Excellent food and really attentive and responsive staff. Really good to have food back at the best “local” pub in Tunbridge Wells…really missed this.

Much improved in meal's excellent and staff very happy to serve . Menu becoming wider inchoice, especially at evening meals and weekend lunches, Sunday lunches more so , which begin on the 6th September Parking is the only problem, so best if you arrive early. Gold club members use this a great deal, more the reason to arrive as soon as possible. Will certainly be worth the effort to do so.

We visited here expecting to see Toads or at least some other amphibians. There was nothing! Not even a fish. My friend Al enjoys a drink and we left both thirsty and disappointed. I recommend it because we visited during Covid and maybe there are more terra-aqueous options when China is under control. On the plus side we met a nice African. We unfortunately saw a dog chasing a man with a moustache who was running. I hope he is okay. He looked like my Uncle who used to be in magazines.

This is the second time, we’ve been to The Toad Rock Retreat, despite living in the village. Usually we tend to eat out in the town. After finding that most of our first choices weren’t open we decided to eat closer to home. Last time we came was an evening excursion so it wasn’t somewhere we would necessarily think of for lunch. Boy are we glad we did! The landlord and the staff here are wonderful, full of character, and are so welcoming. The food is AMAZING!!! I had the prawn, crab and poached egg salad, and it was one of those meals that you just don’t want to stop eating! My birthday is next month and I had planned to have a (no more than six!) meal at my favourite wine bar in town. Not any more.....the table is booked at The Toad Rock Retreat!If you want great food, with fabulous staff and a really unique decor then give this place a try......you won’t be disappointed!

Really good food, very well priced - try the Toad Burger - truly delicious. Good puds too. Staff were cheerful and helpful. Good care to customers and staff during pandemic. Well worth a visit or two.

We stopped off here for an impromptu drink and lunch after a big walk on the common. We hadn’t booked and they were fully booked but we were accommodated and got a nice table in the garden. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Our lunch was delicious especially the Thai veggie burger. We will most certainly be returning soon!

Perfect place n people, great food n beer, lovely yet laid back atmosphere. The landlord is a brilliantly engaging and kind fella, he even gave my wife flowers and broad beans from his garden. I will definitely be returning. A proper pub.

Rusthall is approximately 2 miles west of Royal Tunbridge Wells. Whilst Toad Rock itself was a tourist attraction in the 1800s, it's hardly likely to have the same draw in 2020. Which is a shame. We were here as a result of a walk found on the Fancy Free Walks website which begins and ends by the rock. I'd called ahead to book a table and we were greeted by name on arrival. Covid preparations include hand gel at the door and a safe route to the toilet which avoids walking past other tables. There were also clear shower curtains creating cubicles and shielding the bar. Whilst it somewhat destroys the atmosphere (cosy, oak beams and a log fire), full marks for a great, temporary solution to get the pub safely open again. We had no concerns on that score.The staff were all friendly and happy to chat, but stepped up a gear when necessary to avoid queues at the bar. The menu is suitably varied and not just roasts; the waitress also knew precisely how many many portions were left. So often you spend ages deciding what to have only to find that it's run out; not here. The food arrived quickly. We had roast beef, roast lamb, steak and kidney pie (the last one!) and Toad Burger. The roasts were enormous and came with all the trimmings, the Toad Burger was all meat (no filler) and designed to look like the rock outside, whilst the pie was pronounced as the best he could recall. All in all a great success and highly recommended. It's a free house so there are a range of real ales, well kept.Visit without hesitation!
