Visit here virtually every week despite a twenty minute journey each way, rarely go anywhere else for our fish and chips now. By far the best ones in the region from my experience. Staff are always extremely friendly and the service comes with a guaranteed smile, whether eating in or using the takeaway. Chips are excellent and the fish (of which there is a good selection including cod, haddock, plaice and lemon sole) is always cooked fresh and to perfection, in a delightfully crunchy batter. Big thumbs up for the menu being almost entirely gluten free too.

Once upon a time, this "Chippy" produced and served probably the best fish and chips in the area, however ….. On the last two visits recently, the food has left much more than a little to be desired ! The fish was over battered and not fully cooked and the chips looked and tasted as if they had been 'warmed up' or kept warm for too long...… We had experienced this earlier but thought it was a "one off", but, sadly, after the second disappointing event, we have now called it a day. Like other reviewers, we also experienced a "gruff" waitress who did absolutely nothing to inspire another visit. Sorry, but this place has just gone downhill in our estimation and that is a real shame !

This chippy is simply fantastic, from all who work there, the owners, and the excellent fish! We visit this brilliant place regularly and the fact that you can eat gluten and dairy free with total confidence makes it unbeatable. Their fish is always top quality and fresher than we’ve tasted by the sea. Their battered onion rings are perfect and they have lovely staff who are attentive and professional! Carly is a credit to this business, the owners clearly care about their staff and customers and I feel they could run courses in teaching customer service to others. Top marks, go and try this world class chippy, you’ll dream about it!

Always busy in the evenings, this restaurant is popular with locals. Offers a well priced fish and chips dinner including pickles , bread and butter all washed down with a cuppa. There is a selection of fish options. You are able to have as many extra servings as of chips as you want , however the portions are generally big. The staff are friendly. Intreating little place with lots of character. Safe for celiac customers, with gluten free fish batter and chips are also Gf. Ask staff if unsure. They even have home made Gf fish cakes.

Amazing, quirky and the best fish and chips not on the coast!👍 This quaint little gem is in the Leicestershire village of Rothley. We have eaten here on a few occasions and the consistant high level of excellent quality of food and service has never faulted. But this particular visit just proved what a wonderful establishment this is.We were on our way back from Leicester to Nottingham and had not had any luck finding somewhere to eat as it was 6pm on a Saturday night. My husband suggested I give Time & Plaice a call. Not expecting to get a table I still gave it a go.The Girl was fab and said that if we could get there by 6.30pm they would saueeze us in.Fab..foot down Ray..go go go!!!😂 However ,we then hit a series of traffic incedents which added time onto our journey.😣I called back and explained we would probably not make it but thanks for trying. She asked me to hold on and to my surprise came back on the phone and said to still come ,they would sort it! Amazing! We eventually got there and were welcomed and shown to our table. As we had pre ordered over the phone our meal was there within a few minutes. We once again were not disappointed. My husband had the traditional fish & chips as seen in pic 1. I always have the flour battered fish which is amazing and light.Perfect if you are watching the waist line👍😜Pic 2. Also to top it all a pot of tea and granary bread and butter is included!Result.👍☺ Thanks to an incredibley accommodating team we got a great meal(Again)👍☺☺Thank you guys outstanding👍👍😘xxx

We regularly buy fish and chips from the shop, and we're delighted to visit the restaurant for a meal. We were served promptly, and proprietor, Mandy, is a great character. The batter was wonderfully crisp, which Mandy explained is because they are not wrapped in paper the way takeaways are. Generous portions and the fish was a lovely white colour and beautifully succulent. This went down a treat with the local wine, King Richard, a delicate dry white in the Sauvignon bland style. Ice cream for desert, and we left with very full tummies feeling that we had had a great evening with value for money.

Food is good but tiny fish by any standards. If you're not a local you will treated differently by the owner who fusses over locals & is uninterested or pretty rude to other customers. Waitresses are very slow & don't listen properly to your order so you are likely to get coffee when you order tea & white bread when you ask for brown. They have a stupid system of 2 sittings either 12 noon or 1 pm at lunchtime. Which leaves the cafe busy from 12- 12.30 & then again at 1 pm which is like going back to school dinners. Evenings are very expensive for fish and chips. We won't be going again.

Not too friendly staff on arrival even though we had booked a table and kept waiting quite a while even though we could see plenty of free tables, so kept having to move as we were blocking the entrance/exit. Staff didn't really concentrate on us as kept looking at other tables, even when talking to you - quite rude. When asking if we would like any more chips they only looked at one of our party of 4 and when they said no the other 3 people didn't get asked as the staff just walked away! The food was very tasty and obviously freshly cooked but NO haddock which my father wanted and most peculiar to have a bowl full of pickles placed on the table. I would say the food is overpriced for what you get and the standard of service. The room was extremely noisy with a group of children on their own - parents further up the room (obviously getting some of the quiet that we would have liked) and a large group at the back of the room who were very noisy and didn't seem to be able to talk quietly - would have been nice if they had considered the other diners but the staff didn't say anything to them - very disappointing. The part of the room we were in was constantly being changed around and people asked to move tables. It was therefore very noisy and my father had to tale his hearing aid out as the noise was so loud it was hurting his ears. Another diner who we spoke to outside afterwards said that he had turned his hearing aid off due to the loud volume of noise around us. Not a pleasant atmosphere and we won't be returning, which is a shame as we had heard some good things about this restaurant.

The younger staff need a lesson in customer service I fear, the service is slow and they don't know the menu and have to ask! the drinks service was slow unless you wanted tea. As for the meal the chips were pretty good, mushy peas good and curry sauce decent but small portion. Now the fish, we asked for floured (not battered) and it seemed to be a little dry for me but the taste was ok. Even getting the bill was hard work we gave up waiting in the end and went up to the bar and asked for it, there's only so many trivial pursuit questions you can put up with.

I used to eat here quite often in the past. My father is a plain (no foreign muck) kind of an eater, so it made a trouble-free venue for birthdays and anniversary get-togethers. I remember the food being excellent, the cafe cramped and the service friendly but mad-cap. After a 7 year absence, I've just revisited with my own family. Being a party of 5 we booked a table, yet were delayed being seated while the staff debated where we could sit. The cafe has twice as many tables as is practical for the space, so there was nowhere for us to stand as staff began hefting tables around, even moving one into the disabled toilet at one point! The menu is out of date, with some items listed being unavailable. The staff are attentive and friendly but are so disorganised you just know are not going to get your order as you ordered it. Indeed it took two waitresses to take our order. The first committed everything to memory and walked away never to be seen again, the second, wrote everything down but clearly never referred to it as our order was completely messed up, leading to much, "I'll see your mushy peas and raise you a curry sauce", type bartering. The place was comfortably busy (75%) but the service was chaotic. How they cope when the cafe is at full capacity I dread to think. The portion sizes are drastically reduced (they were too large in the past, in my opinion), and they offer refills for tea and extra chips and bread. The food is not as good as I remember it. The fish was decidedly average, the chips pale and fairly bland and my baked beans were tepid. Everything was served onto cold plates and handed to you by the wait staff rather than placed before you (a pet peeve of mine!) I have eaten better fish and chips locally. Sadly, I do not think I will return to Time & Plaice.

I can't believe I have lived in Leicestershire all my life and have only just discovered this fantastic cafe. We were treated to lunch today by our son for our wedding anniversary, what a treat.!The service was very attentive, the fish and chips were spot on, just as I remember as a child. So fresh, hot and very tasty. I was even asked if I would like a light batter on my fish !Perfect. We had bread and butter and tea to compliment the meal. Again Perfect. We will be back very soon, thank you.x

I use this cafe for a quick meal before a meeting or evening events. And it is a cafe and to call it a restaurant gives a false hope that it is more sophisticated than it is. You get a choice of different fish (I always go for the breaded plaice) or the usual chip shop variants. . Unlimited chips, bread and tea! You can buy wine. But don't expect a sophisticated restaurant. It isn't one. Not a salad place nor fresh peas. Just a simple cafe attached to the fish and chip shop. Average evening cost is around £10 per head. Atmosphere is basic and admittedly service can be patchy - but normally very friendly. Everyone is hurried as the cafe is always full. You need to book!

I went to this fast food caff, you could not describe it as a restaurant as it was managed/ the service was like a lorry drivers caff! I went there on 14 March (unfortunately) for an early Mother's day meal in the evening, with my daughter and her family. I asked for the salmon fillet and salad, Bad move. I was told, no barked, at that salad was only available if pre-ordered! What? You have to pre-order a salad, with a fish and chip shop next door serving salad??? I asked for no chips and just peas then,( thinking they were fresh peas heated up) as no salad available ( who thought salad was so hard to come by). The salmon turned up with, yes you guessed it chips and mushy peas which looked liked snot. The salmon was so overcooked, I could have stood my knife vertically in it. I was taking photos of my grandchildren when the old woman serving us put a large bottle of tomato sauce in front of me, obscuring my camera, such rudeness. Vile food and very cramped seating. This is one to miss if you are hungry in Rothley. Avoid big time. Frankly, I have had better fish cooked in McDonalds. The menu has approx 8 items but that's probably a good thing as it means the awful food they serve is limited. I think whoever owns this establishment needs to check out Trip Advisor pretty soon.

I have made a number of lunchtime visits to the Time and Plaice, located in a prime position right in the centre of Rothley. The restaurant is attached to a chip shop which supplies food to the restaurant. The restaurant seats around 50 persons and is very popular indeed - it is strongly recommended to book on pretty well most days. Whilst the interior is a little tired, the quality of the food and its very low price is very impressive. We usually have a small portion of fish and chips with mushy peas, which comes with bread and butter and a pot of tea. The plates are always hot, which I like. All this comes served at the table for a total cost of £4.95(Note that payment cards are not accepted and settlement is in cash only). I will definitely return when I have a run in the country and fancy great fish and chips at a really low price.

This is a chip shop with a restaurant attached; the food is therefore the same food as served in the take-away, so you pay a bit more to sit in & eat it. However you do get pickled veg (gherkins or onions) plus bread & butter & a cup of tea or coffee tossed in, so - not so bad. This is one of the best fish'n'chip shops in the area, although not the cheapest; there is general at least a small queue so there is always at least a little wait, hence also in the restaurant. The atmosphere is always convivial, & the food good. It is also licensed although not a great choice of wines.I can recommend this if you want fish'n'chips & want to eat out - may be prudent to book at peak times though or you'll get turned away if you just turn up.

With short of ten colleagues, we were on a training course from the continent, looking for a great fish & chips experience near Loborough... It all started there and ended up in this tiny place in Rothfield, following some local advice. Well. The place itself does not call for any other comment than being neat, clean, sober and authentic. We definitely landed in a classic place. But that was without counting on the "presence", mild description of the superlative encounter with our waitresses, two delicious characters which contributed to build the F&C momentum. You can see it as aggressive, or, as a fabulous experience at the table. So thanks to you ladies for your energy, and passion at serving us and turning that evening in a true experience. It was "only" F&C, but they were (truly and obviously) fantastic, fresh and battered to perfection. Great bundle of casual atmosphere, service on steroids and good raw. Loved it!

This restaurant is located in the centre of Rothley, and one of the few downsides to the place is the lack of plentiful parking. Many eating establishments have struggled to cope with all 14 of my extended family. We certainly aren't easy with so many changes of mind and forgetting what they ordered. I have to say that this fish and chip restaurant coped brilliantly with us. Every order was delivered, Everything was hot and they did it all with a friendly smile. So top marks to the staff! The food was also top notch. The chips were crisp on the outside and soft in the middle - perfect. The batter on the fish was light and crisp and as boneless and skinless as advertised. All accessories; beans, peas, curry sauce, bread and butter etcetera were excellent, everything cooked perfectly and extras of everything given freely. If you are looking to provide a tasty meal to a large party I can certainly recommend Time and Plaice. Unfortunately I can't comment on prices or value for money as I wasn't privy to the cost, so my valuations below are only estimates, I'm afraid.

This is our local chippy and they serve great fish and chips, we often have take away, and regularly go for a sit down lunch, the service can be quirky, as it is a often busy and it is best to book, especially on a Friday and Saturday, but I have never found the staff rude and I have going here for over 10 years! The food is great, really fresh fish, great chips, peas, tea and bread and butter. I personally have not found better fish and chips. I think it says something that the owners can go away on holiday, close for a week, then open again to a queue out of the door!

Have been to Time and Plaice on 3 occasions. Each time the abruptness and rudeness of the waiting staff in the restaurant has been straight from the "stuff you" school of service. The younger girl was alright, but the middle aged women were truly obnoxious. Each time it was a case of you can't sit here, you can't sit there, even though there were no reserved signs on any of the tables we chose. On the last occasion, after we had sat done, a blonde, middle aged, member of staff in blue started puling the table away from us and banging a chair into my leg as we were getting up to leave. It is clear this place gets a lot of custom from older people, which is probably why the staff can be rude and aggressive to customers at will. The treatment I have received there is the worst that I have experienced anywhere, ever. Its not as if the food is anything to shout about in the first place. The fish and chips were ordinary, at best. The place is little more than a glorified chippy.I do hope the owners or management read this feedback before their staff drive away all of their business. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy!

I had take away fish and chips. I deliberately asked for fish and chips. I got the standard size fish and medium chips - £4.50. Freshly cooked because there was a queue. The fish was very thin, discoloured, cooked in oil and the batter very thick. Not crisp and light but chewy. For £1.50 there wasn't many chips which were undercooked. My quest for good fish and chips in Leicester will continue.

Crowded, manic atmosphere with staff running around like headless chickens & the Mother hen standing around swinging her tea towel whilst clucking her orders at people, which only resulted in confusion. Chips were only just warm, fish was average, prices were perhapes over the top. Restaurant area is decorated with tat that needs a good dusting! Health and saftey a BIG issue regards locking the restaurant door, and insisting people exit via the fryers and into the take away area...!! Hmmm

Good chippy with a cafe style restaurant at the side. Nothing special but nothing bad about it. Okay for an alternative to cooking but not for a special evening. Staff chatty and friendly but not typcial waitress style you get in a restaurant. Not professional, more of a casual chat (hello me duck) ! Food same as you get in the chip shop and they are generous with refills on tea/ bread / chips. Food prices the same as the food in the local pub so considering its only a chip shop it could be cheaper.

We have eaten here before, but a long time ago and as we had something to celebrate we booked a table for early evening. When we arrived we were able to select our table. Our order was taken and the food arrived quickly.Food was fresh and nicely cooked, Prices, I expect to pay a premium as I am sitting in a restaurant, but £12+ for fish and chips, beats any local pub. Staff, a definite lack of smiles or pleasantries. Overall price for 4 meals and 3 drinks (I had the tea included in the price), it was just short of £50. In hindsight I would take my money to another restaurant. Judging by other reviews, there does appear to be a theme and I think the management really need to look at addressing some of the issues. I won't go again, but I wouldn't put anyone else off going as I think you would have to experience it for yourself.

This restaurant is attached to a takeaway chippy with a good reputation for honest -to-goodness fish in batter and chips. My daughter fancied this for her birthday and our party was Mum & Dad and both daughters. We had plenty to talk about so the fact that they were busy wasn't a problem and we ordered a pot of tea first and had had time to decide on our meals when the waitress came for our order. You don't go to eat in at The Time and Plaice if you're in a hurry. It is always packed and bustling in the evening. We had Cod or Scampi and chips with ample supplies of Bread and Butter , Mushy Peas and pickled onions and were offered plenty of top-ups. I had the Rothley Special which is huge so didn't need any extra chips.Good value, friendly, but busy , so if you're prepared to take your time and bear with the rushed but cheerful ambience it's well worth waiting for. Go somewhere else if you want to be the centre of attention and order the staff around !

We booked a week in advance for an early evening time slot for my family on a Saturday night. We have visted Time and Plaice on several occasions over recent years and take the service with a pinch of salt based upon the quality of the fish and chips served. In recent visits though we have found the service to be deteriorating. The last occasion though (and likely our last visit) was very disappointing. After arriving we were shown to our table. After 20 minutes waiting one of waitresses realised that we hadn't been asked if we wanted a drink. We ordered our drinks and immediately placed our order for food. The restaurant was about half full at this point with the takeaway fairly busy. After 50 minutes waiting I approached the bar and was asked if I wanted to pay. I replied that we hadn't even eaten and was wondering if we had to wait much longer (nice to know that the staff were on the ball regarding whether we'd been served). The waitress came back over to our table and said the delay was due to my wife's 'special order' which would be five more minutes to fry. The special order by the way was just lite-battered fish fried in flour. 5 minutes later our order eventually arrived with what appeared a normal battered fish for my wife. When we asked if this was the lite batter we were brusquely told that they didn't have time to prepare it as they were too busy. To us it was more of a 'take it or leave' attitude or even 'well you've got something so get on with it'. No apology was forthcoming and no explanaton had been given through the 50 minutes wait that this wasn't an option tonight. In fact after taking the order, being told that we had to wait for 5 minutes because it was just being prepared and then not receiving it, the table behind us were having their order taken and the lite batter was still an option and being explained in detail and recommended! We could have taken the 50 minute wait with some basic customer service at the start by managing the customer expectations regarding it being a busy night and gettng a drink early with a friendly smile and a pot of tea. To be told your meal was being prepared though and then to not get what you've ordered with a brush off whilst still offering the same option to others made us feel our custom was taken for granted. Wake up call Time and Plaice - it's not. Reputations are built over years but can disappear overnight. Sort the service in the restaurant, brusque staff are not amusing when you've waited 50 minutes.

A visit to this establishment on Friday 4th October has prompted me to write a review. We have been having meals here regularly over the last 15 – 16 years and have 99% of the time had a good meal at a reasonable price (lunchtimes)We normally visit on a Friday or Saturday lunch time.We know all the staff and of course they know us and our likes and dislikes. They know our order of by heart because we come so often on average 3 or 4 times a month. We like to be seated in the front part of the restaurant or if necessary part way down and the staff know this.I would like to say that there are other regulars that choose where they sit and they are always given their choice. On Friday on arrival we were told we had to sit at the furthest table in the back of the restaurant, you couldn’t get any further back!! I asked a member of staff why we couldn’t sit at one of the two vacant tables at the front, she said I have fours coming in and I’m putting them there. I replied that you could sit four on the table at the back and you know our preference is to sit here at the front. No, she said, the back table was our only option. When my husband came in (after parking the car) he was shocked to see where I was seated. I relayed what I had been told and when the member of staff came to take our order we said it was far too cold to sit here can’t we move, No she said this was all that was available, I’ll turn off the air con but it will get too hot!!!!She then said “well” after we had looked at each other at her more than usual abruptness (but we were used to her manner) “are you having lunch here or not”?We said if the air con was turned off we would stay. She zoomed off to get the remote and duly switched it off.Where we sat was dull, cold at first and you could smell some kind of disinfectant but as you are right near the toilet it was probably that.We didn’t get a pot of tea and we didn’t get a plate of bread and butter until the meal came and it all came at once!!! And the sugar was slammed down on the table by the member of staff who seated us (very rude)This is not normally how they serve you, you get tea and bread first enabling you to have a cup of tea before you eat.Anyway we started to eat our meal, it wasn’t very hot, the peas and chips were only luke warm but where we were seated you can’t get the staffs attention very easily, so we carried on and ate 3 quarters of the meal I left the last part of my fish as I didn’t think it was cooked enough. We got up and walked out to pay and leave. My husband went to pay and the member of staff already mentioned looked at my husband and said “your not very happy are you”? As she had asked the question he answered her and told her that no we had had terrible service and the meal wasn’t up too standard. One of the owners then came over and my husband put the money on the counter.I had gone outside and then the waitress came outside and started to real off how she had lost someone close to her 9 years ago and there are more important things in her life than our fish and chip lunch!!!Well excuse me but if you are in a customer facing business, and providing food, you look after the customer and at that precise moment in time it was quite important to us that we got what we were paying for!! thank you!!! The other owner then came outside and said he would give us our money back as he was sorry we felt we had had a bad meal, we said no its ok we don’t want our money back, that’s not why we had complained it had been off today but we will be back.He said again no let me give you your money back, we said no we don’t want it we wanted you to know what our experience had been like so you could have our feed back about our meal and service. He said again I’ll give you your money back and I don’t want you back, I don’t want you in my restaurant ever again. My god how drastic, it is clear they can’t take any critiscm about their fish and chip shop which is a great shame as all businesses need feedback from customers but no not here. So to sum up the food they serve can go off, the staff can go slightly bonkers and regular customers get treated very badly and their answer is (if you complain about it) is your banned!!!Well we will never frequent the place again and neither will any of our friends and neighbours as they too were horrified at our treatment. So after 15 years we are banned, they obviously don’t care about feedback, can’t stand some one to criticise their establishment in any way, well tough on this occasion it was needed. So beware!!! if you want to keep going, don’t dare say something was wrong you’ll be banned.I hope Rothley Fisheries read this they need too!!!!!
