Thyme to Eat in Chesterfield

Very disappointing. Had about a 40 minute wait for food. Jacket potato very disappointing couldn't eat it. Overall a very poor experience.

Nice friendly place to eat vegetarian food, not my normal choice. Had the soup, which was nice and a salad waldo nice. It's not cheap but nice food. Nice change would go again, but maybe not rush back. But overall would recommend

It's tucked away down a side street and a bit hard to find, but this is a lovely homely independent of the kind we don't see enough of nowadays. The staff seem slightly stressed and off their feet and no wonder... it's deservedly popular. I had a lovely all day vegetarian breakfast (vegan also available, but I fancied an egg) with choices offered as to tomatoes (fresh or tinned) and bread (white of granary). My first visit to Chesterfield (and I got to see the famous crooked spire) but I hope to come again.

I was stood ages waiting for a table, then shown to a table that needed clearing, foods not bad though, but they are busy

What a lovely place to eat, nice and peaceful, vegan and vegetarian food is delicious and great prices, clean and tidy. They have toilets and are in the centre of Chesterfield in the shambles, staff are always polite and friendly. Breakfast is amazing.

Great food, I had the celeriac and parsnip bake - it was delicious. My wife really enjoyed her vegetable lasagna.

Absolutely popping! I had the peanut butter sandwich with carrot, cinnamon and raisins and it was the best P Butter sandwich I ever had. Soup of the day was vibes as well. Seriously glad I gave this place a go today. Loved it! 🖤 Service was good vibes too.

This was not a great experience for our family. We has hoping great things from probably the o ly available vegetarian eatery. We were served a burnt egg sandwich, and it was cremated not burnt. The jack fruit tacos were stale, and despite being tasty the tacos were clearly stale or out of date. The male toilets was disgusting with no basic toiletries available. I would not allow my child to go into this room. To follow it up an elderly gentleman got stuck in here awaiting toilet paper for an excessive amount of time. The food order took a long time to arrive and was cleary all microwaved. Very disapointing over all.

I love this place. The actual first one vegetarian and vegan place that has taste in food been in many restaurants and non of the i could compare even close enough. Food is beyond very tasty. It's not bland like other places I would definitely work here as a chef too to give my heart to this skills xxx

I just had lunch here, I found the place looking for gluten free places in Chesterfield. Great! Nice place and the food delicious, I had a goat cheese tart with salad. Places like this are great. Good luck!

A lovely cosy little cafe, with friendly staff that made us all feel so welcome. Food was brilliant and the cakes were even better.

Hands down my favourite place to eat lunch or grab a coffee in Chesterfield. The food is always really tasty, the staff are lovely, and the environment is calm and welcoming. Nowhere in the town centre compares for me.

A wonderfully cosy and friendly cafe in The Shambles. I went in for a pot of their green tea and was given such a friendly welcome. Popped in this morning for a takeaway coffee and again a lovely, friendly welcome. Looking forward to visiting again soon. If you’re visiting Chesterfield be sure to pop in.

Warm welcome, lovely fresh food and I was warned that as they were busy I might have to wait 10-15 mins for my food. A good lunch and recommend.

Been here for years. Good solid well prepared vegetarian and vegan food. Lovely cakes and coffee. Very friendly and helpful staff. Dog friendly.

My wife and I always call in here when we visit Chesterfield. We only have snacks like soup, sandwiches etc. Their menu is quite extensive. The staff are always friendly and soon come round to clear the tables. It is a vegetarian cafe, but we are not vegetarian or even bothered about gluten free food, we just like their food. They do sell vitamins and supplements etc. It does get quite busy at times, and because everything is freshly made there can be a bit of a wait. But there is free WiFi so that can help to while away the time. We'll worth a visit. However, the toilets do let the place down. They do not seemed to be cleaned regularly enough.

First time eating at this cafe, have to say I was disappointed with my sandwich. I had peanut butter and grated carrot, on gluten free granary. The bread was dry, there wasn't enough peanut butter on it and the carrot was also dry, not moist like you'd expect freshly grated carrot to be. I also had a chocolate milkshake, which didn't taste if chocolate at all, or look chocolatey. However, my partner enjoyed her toastie, which was brie and mushroom. Maybe I just picked the wrong sandwich today. I'm gutted, as although I'm not vegan, I do cook lots of meat free meals at home, as vegan is always tasty. The cafe was busy, and seems really popular, so maybe I'll give it another go some time. The young man that served us was very polite and friendly.

Always go here when we're in town. Beautiful veggie breakfast and plenty of options all veggie or vegan.

Travel around 35 miles about every other week just to come here 🤣 the best veggie lasagne,garlic bread and salad ever. Huge portions and friendly staff!

We have visited this place a few times and so have given it a fair chance. The food is unimaginative and poorly prepared. A 'Greek Salad' consists of lots of lettuce, diced courgette and red pepper, with grapes and a couple of slices of orange. The concession to the Greek aspect is one small quartered tomato, some small tinned olives sliced into rings, and a small amount of feta cheese crumbled over the surface. Bread is extra. The All Day Breakfast consists of an egg, a fritter, some tinned baked beans and deep fried mushrooms. The coffee was lukewarm, stewed and disgusting. There is no sense of people who know about vegetarian food preparing tasty dishes, just of thrown-together items which happen not to contain meat. The service was a bit shambolic, but I guess they tried. They need a visit from Gordon Ramsey to point out just how unacceptable it is. It should also be mentioned that the place is like a sound box. A squealing kid or the hot water geyser made conversation impossible.

If you're veggie or vegan and need a cooked breakfast, this is a good choice in Chesterfield

Great vegetarian/ vegan cafe. Portion sizes were nice and generous, and the side salad was as delicious with the sandwich I had! Quick service and plenty of choice. The only issue is say is that the toilets need updating a little 😅

I met my friend at this vegetarian café for lunch. We both had veggie lasagne, mine being gluten free. It arrived on a huge plate, with a fantastic salad and a gluten free herby scone on the side. My friend had a cheese scone. I can heartily recommend the scones! My friend commented that she'd never had a salad with so many different things in it. To me, that's a perfect salad. There's nothing worse to me than a side salad that consists of a couple of slices of tomato and cucumber and a limp lettuce leaf! Salad vegetables are pretty cheap and can make a good meal into a great one. I couldn't finish my meal, although I tried really hard to. My friend finished hers. We each had lovely, flavoured lattes to accompany our meals. The service was great, and the premises clean and tidy. This was probably my 3rd or 4th visit to this café and there will be many more. An excellent place for a filling, healthy meal. Highly recommended.

A day trip to Chesterfield was made special by the fantastic lunch, and wonderful service. We visit family in the area, found this cafe over 10 years ago and always look forward to visiting- there's plenty of choice, the portions are generous & the food is thoughtfully made. Mum thought the veg lasagne was the best ever! And dog friendly too :)

Excellent selection of vegetarian and vegan food, and cater well for gluten free requirements too. Staff are friendly, prices very fair, and food is lovely. Feel very lucky to have such a fab place in Chesterfield. The only difficulty can be choosing what to have when everything on the menu is both vegetarian and delicious!

Wow! We have visited this place several times over the years and always been impressed, but we visited again and were overwhelmed by the fantastic service. We have always loved the food here, and it didn't fail to impress this time,the salads are incredible! We brought our dog and sat outside this time, and the waitress very kindly brought him some water and dog treats, very kind! We had excellent food and service, I really could not fault the experience. The best veggie cafe for miles, easily!

Worst coffee I've ever had. I couldn't even drink it. The "chilli" had no seasoning or spices as would be expected and was more of a watery veg soup. Sadly I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

I love this place! I am vegan with allergies so feel safe to order without knowing I'm going to get ill. Staff have always been friendly to me and my daughter's. To be honest we travel miles down the motorway just to visit this cafe, the food is always delicious. The vegan breakfasts are amazing!! I'm going to get ready and go today 🤣😂. Really missed it during lockdown.

I have been here a couple of times now and each time the food has been delicious! There is plenty of seating to accommodate many diners, without being packed in like sardines. You MUST try the carrot, peanut butter, raisin and cinnamon bagel! It tastes like dessert but is super healthy! Their variety of vegan foods is fantastic! It's not the same old boring vegan dishes that you'd most likely make at home, but rather introduces other options which you'll definitely make after trying it here. I recommend this place to all vegans, vegetarians and even meat eaters! Even if you just pop in for coffee and cake, their cake selection is amazing! Something for everyone. (Lots of gluten free options too!!) I'm so glad I found this place. Do give it a try for yourself.

Called in about 2.30 pm. It was quiet. Met with friendly greeting. I chose mushroom & cashew slice with vegetables. What turned up was a microwaved pastry slice containing mushroom & cashew. The pastry was thus soggy and horrible. The vegetables were plain and bland. This was accompanied by a small jug of green something. I ate the veg and left the mess of a slice. When table was cleared, no interest was shewn whether I enjoyed the meal. As I left, the counter staff disappeared to the kitchen. How will this place survive?

My husband called in here one Sunday for a lite bite. The place was busy but we managed to get a table and I thought it had quite a nice ‘feel’ to the place, although the wooden table needed a good clean as it felt sticky! After looking at the menu I went to the counter to be served by someone who looked like she didn’t want to be there, I ordered my food and drinks, she put the drinks on a tray, told me how much, I payed and left with no ‘thank you’ from her or any conversation at all. I got the feeling that they were very short staffed as there seemed to be one serving and one in the kitchen. I had to wait quite a long time for my bagel and when the girl brought it, again in her very unfriendly manner, I was surprised to find that it wasn’t toasted which could be just me but I’ve never had a I toasted bagel before. Anyway it tasted ok but then I found out the a quarter of the bread was so stale that I had to leave it. I decided to just leave, to have complained would have been a nightmare as the staff were so busy. I hope that this was an unusual case, but I have discovered that the place is up for sale so maybe the owners have just lost any interest in the place. I would be reluctant to visit again which is a shame being the only vegetarian and vegan cafe in chesterfield.

Had a vegan breakfast that was nice enough - and got it cheaper by going before 11am. However, the coffee left a lot to be desired. Not sure what coffee it was, but I don't want another! Went to Costa afterwards as had to leave the coffee here. Service was good but there was only my friend and I in when we arrived. I am not a vegan so I don't think I will be visiting again as I don't need to. Probably recommend to vegans though, as long as they don't have the coffee :)

Popped in for a wholesome treat for lunch, menu was good and specials board looked amazing. I had the hummus, avocado and cucumber bagel with the most impressive side salad I have seen for a whole. I was all very delicious and due to the nature of the filling I managed to benefit from the avocado as a face pack too (a tad messy). This cafe is a real gem and I didn't feel awkward as a single diner or rushed to leave. The mood was as wholesome as the food. Thank you I think I'll be back soon

Went to Chesterfield Motor Show, stumbled on this lovely magical place Excellent service, really friendly bunch of folk.Proper little café, clean and well presented.Step out of the rat race and relax, with a tasty panini and proper brew.Thank you for your wonderful friendly service. X

I had Sweet Potato Falafals which came in a Pitta bread with a bowl of Roast Potatoes and Salad💚 it was very tasty. I also had filter coffee with Soya milk .

I am not a vegetarian but I do like this little place for the delicious food. It's not cheap but reasonably priced. There is always 2 choices of homemade and the various toastees are really good. This cafe has good food and is great whether you are vegetarian or not

Stumbled on this ace veggie/vegan restaurant by chance while visiting and so glad went in and returned soon after. Wife and I had four different meals in total (not each!) and all were absolutely superb. I particularly enjoyed the jackfruit wrap/taco. You have to wait a little while freshly cooked but not too long and definitely worth it. Place had nice vibe with interesting music in background and all the staff were lovely. Cakes and scones were good and catered for different diets, they also make a great coffee and place spotlessly clean.We are returning to Chesterfield tomorrow and will head straight back there without considering anywhere else. We live in SE London and wish they would open near us!!

This has a good choice of food on the menu , but the cost of items are way to high.And the ginger cake was so dry, The elderly lady serving me took my order to another table and didn’t even notice she had done it, so much for a warm cheese scone.And those toilets,they need refurbish or a decent clean. Won’t be returning.

We were in Chesterfield and looking for somewhere to grab a sandwich and a drink. This was a lovely place that I would definitely go back to. Neither of us are vegetarian but we thoroughly enjoyed our yummy sandwiches.

I last reviewed Thyme to Eat in 2016. I still love visiting here, the food is some of the best in town. I don't see any problem with the interior, but then again I care most about food from a restaurant! The food and portions are lovely, perfect with plenty on the plate. I definitely recommend this café. The staff are helpful and kind, it's a nice relaxed atmosphere with brilliant food. I love that it is all made fresh, including the yummy cakes which are made in the café as well. I've never had a bad meal here!

We had a very tasty meal at a good price. There was a good selection, with plenty of vegan and other more specific options available. The meals came with a good salad - not too much lettuce or other "bulking items" and the portions were fairly generous. It had a nice vibe and was perfectly clean and tidy. They offer a selection of products to buy too. It's a nice little vegetarian cafe, in a town centre that hasn't got much else in that department. This was our second visit and wont be our last.

It's starting to look very old and shabby inside. Lots of nicks nacks that clutter the place.

The vegetarian breakfast is basic but pricey. Sometimes it is very poor, the mushrooms can be old and wizened , presentation lets it down, watery beans flooding the plate. Why dont you pad it out with saute potato on all breakfasts and not just as an alternative for an egg for vegans? This is the only place in the Town centre to get a veggie breakfast and its not good, if it wasnt for the granary toast it would be rubbish. Even a supermarket just out of Town offers a better offering for less cost. Voting with my feet sadly.

Called there this morning ordered . 25 min later decided to leave and get my money back to be told they had forgotten. there were two other couples in one of whom let before ordering. Staff more bothered about chatting than serving Another nice place spoiled through poor service I won't be going again!

Wont bother again . Ordered the special moussaka with salad. It was awful Moussaka was basically watery tinned tomatoes with onions and aubergines 3 thick slices of potato with a miniscule amount of grilled cheese on the potato so virtually no protein at all in the dish.The tomato base was bland , poorly seasoned and the whole thing was a wet and sloppy mess with no layered structure or the fluffy cheese sauce topping characteristic of moussaka. To make matters worse it was served with the most bland unimaginative salad. The sloppy watery tomato juice running into the iceberg lettuce and fruit bits making the whole thing taste disgusting. A vegetarian establishment should showcase tasty imaginitive and nutritionally balanced recipes ..this felt like it had been cooked by a non vegetarian who had just left the meat out .

I came here today with my mum for lunch, to cheer my mum up after a bad morning she had had. We both had the same thing which was Welsh rarebit.. when it came it was like slop on toast, and also didn’t come with the things described (onion relish was chopped onion and cucumber with mint sauce?) thought we’d save the day and get a scone (surely that can’t go wrong right? Wrong.) was super dry, the best thing about all this was the Diet Coke.. staff didn’t seem to care, out dated and no love put in.

£10:50 for beans on toast (2 slices of toast for myself with beans and a slice of toast with beans for my daughter) oo and a fruit shoot!!! Not a tight one when comes to eating out but WOW couldn’t believe how expensive it was just for what i ordered!

Food very nice service a little slow

Really poor . A Welsh rarebit that I've never seen the like of - a disgusting runny brown slop of what appeared to be some cheap processed cheese mixed with some French mustard. This was poured on top of a barely toasted slice of limp granary. It looked and tasted appaling and they've clearly not made it before. Even my coffee was cold. I left swiftly and got a decent bite elsewhere and would advise a wide berth here.

Food was fine, but a bit expensive for what it was.

sad to say it was disapointing the cafe is tatty and looks unclean had i not ordered i would have left having seen the fly corpses in the windows, lunch cost £18.20 for a salad and jacket potatoe pricey but hey if its good i dont mind , however it was not good the food felt unloved, piled high zero presentation the celery was brown round the edges lacked flavor we left pretty much all of it . give it a good clean and put some love into the food it looked like school dinners . i have never left a poor review before

Visited here for lunch with my daughter and our 2 dogs. Had a lovely mushroom risotto. Very impressed to find a vegetarian cafe and one who allowed us to bring our dogs along. Going on holiday with your pet can make life difficult, but the staff here were very welcoming. Will visit again before the end of our holiday. They even brought the dogs a bowl of water .Thank you.

We stumbled upon this cafe by chance and optimistically asked the owner if they’d let dogs in - they do! Inside is relaxed with plenty of space and friendly staff. There is a fixed menu as well as daily specials and a risotto of your choice option. My mum and I went for the risotto which has a 30 minute waiting time posted (obviously fresh) and were not disappointed. As I had asked for soy milk with my tea then then checked whether I was vegan before processing the order. I’d strongly recommend this place. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is lovely and all dietary requirements are catered for - superb!

Me and my bf come in quite a bit as we're vegan and veggie, i had a breakfast and my bf had one of the speacials on board, on the menu the breakfast says it comes with tea,anyway my bf wanted a orange juice and when i ordered and payed and sat down, my bf noticed id not got a tea, so when i went back and said you forgot my tea. One of the staff said not very nice, you didnt ask for one and i said it comes with my breakfast i ordered and the staff said oh you have to ask for it (even though its included on the menu) and then charged me for orange juice. The breakfast seemed to been thrown on the plate and seemed alot smaller than previous time and my bf tart he ordered had been microwaved and bottom pastry was very hard to chew.

Very good food with a good selection of gluten free meals. Also has some gluten free cakes. Small selection of health foods available to buy in the shop area.

A great vegetarian restaurant, friendly staff and food range of food

Our first time at Thyme to Eat and our last I’m afraid. I agree with other reviewers about the decor, cleanliness and toilets - enough said. We ordered toasted sandwiches, not complicated and daily staples on the menu. We ordered 3 toasted sandwiches to be served with a side salad and ordered a pot of tea for two and a glass of water. The water and tea came quite quickly although I would have preferred ice in my water as some places do now. The toasted sandwiches (or toasties as they are described); took 40 minutes to arrive; not one but 2 cups of tea had been consumed and it had begun to stew. People who had arrived after us and ordered after us were already eating their meals. As with other reviewers we were not checked on or asked if everything was OK; so I had to stop someone who was clearing a table and ask where our ‘toasties’ were to be told that ‘there was a queue for toasties and there can only be one done at a time’. Shortly after this our meals were served; I ordered the mushroom and red pepper and I have to say I’ve never had a ‘toastie’ like it - it was a sandwich which had been toasted , the filling - if you can call it that was tasteless and there was hardly any mushroom or pepper on it. Very disappointing!! The salad was lack lustre and also tasteless. At no time at point of ordering to me stopping the member of staff were we told there was a wait or told at point of ordering that there will be a wait to give us a choice as to wether or not we wanted to choose say a sandwich or a jacket potato which is what the couple who come in after us were enjoying whilst we still waited for ours to arrive. This cafe has the potential, as others have said to be a wonderful place to eat for vegans and non-vegans alike but I wouldn’t go there again nor recommend it :(

Great vegan breakfast and range of vegan cakes.

I went in with my sister for a light lunch, we sat at a table and the waitress came to give us our menu, the atmosphere was very relaxed and the decor was different, it was a vegan cafe and we do not usually go in these but it was clean and friendly. I had cheese and scrambled egg on toast and it was very tasty. The only thing that let it down was the toilet it was very cramped and only room for one person at a time , also there was cleaning stuff where you had to wait and it was a bit smelly. otherwise quite good.

I had gone to Chesterfield for the day shopping and didt know eating places very well I found this little restaurant accidentally it had a good range of healthy foods including gluten free and vegetarian

I visited the Cafè last week. I ordered the Veggie breakfast & poached Eggs - it come out after about 20 minutes. The eggs were heard the toast was cold. Expensive for eggs, beans tomatoes mushrooms & toast!! Chucked on a plate! The table needed a good clean bits of food stuck to it. The whole place needs a good clean and face lift! Pretty basic. Won’t be back I’m sorry to say.
