Very friendly welcome, great coffee and a fab sausage roll. Can’t fault it and. Wry glad to have walked around the town and found it.

Lovely cafe, lots of cakes, sandwiches, salads and other meals. Few veggie options, we asked for vegan and they made us a fresh falafel salad which was great! Also had a vegan cake.

Called in for lunch and were so pleased with the food we booked an evening meal. The lamb shank was delicious. So nice we booked again. It's only a small place but in this case small is very good.

We popped in for the first time today to collect the pizza kit for our child (local competition they are running) and to grab some food to take away. The steak pie is amazing and the cakes, coffee and hot chocolate have gone down a treat. Very friendly service and couldn't be more helpful. I've seen some reviews that say cash only but we were able to pay by card.Highly recommend and we'll be back. Thank you!

Having had a long drive as part of our NC500 route we were looking for a coffee and a quick snack. I happened to find this cafe recommended on Trip Advisor so we parked in the road opposite and went in. Initially we were really disappointed to see the takeaway only sign (due to Covid restrictions) as we had spent all day in the car and it was cold and wet outside. The owner gave us a huge smile and asked if he could help - I was honest and told him the truth. Without any pressure at all, he said that we would be welcome to sit on the sofa in the window and eat there if we wanted to. He was so friendly that we decided to do just that.He had a good selection of hot food (pasties, sausage rolls, etc), salad boxes, sandwiches, etc but we were far too taken by the display of home made cakes. What a wonderful choice! I eventually chose the chocolate cake and my husband the fruit cake. Both were totally delicious, as were the coffees. The owner was so friendly without being intrusive, and told us how difficult it was as the shape of cafe meant he couldn't safely have tables inside. Everything was very Covid safe.We enjoyed the food so much my husband ordered a sandwich for later to takeaway and this also was really good. I would certainly highly recommend this cafe - the owner deserves as much support as possible during these very difficult times.

Wow, def the place to go as we had two of the salad boxes also had freshly cooked home made chips or they certainly looked like it but would 100% recommend anyone to go there. Everything we had was amazing so thank you and great service

Had a takeaway for 4. All different dishes from an understandably limited menu but all really good and cooked to perfection. Good Covid measures too.

Nice little family owned place. Take away and social distancing in place. Had the tomato soup which was nice and earthy. Perfect for a drizzly day. Also had the steak pie - nice crust and big chunks of steak. Yummy. They were closing early today because it was his daughter’s birthday-I love that. Just the kind of place I seek out.

The only place open on a Wednesday morning in Helmsdale at the moment for takeaway coffee and cake - very welcoming and helpful and the cake was delicious, too!

When we visited this cafe back in december they had a limited menu as the chef was away but the atmosphre was great and they also allow dogs in but proberbly only when there not busy very friendly staff

As the title suggests, a brilliant roast beef dinner was had by all! Superb homemade Yorkshire puds and plentiful roast beef and veggies. Would have liked an extra roast spud, though.

I was here whilst on holiday in July 2019, after a recommendation from a local person. It was fantastic and they coped really well with all my intolerances, gluten, daily, shellfish, preservatives, pork, etc. The food was lovely, well cooked and presented and served with courtesy. Popped in yesterday on route to a meeting in Wick. Owner was just opening up and he welcomed us in. He got the heater on and hot drinks served whilst our breakfast rolls were being prepared. I asked for extra crispy bacon and hubbie had sausage and egg. They were both delicious. Owner was very chatty and friendly. Food was fabulous. My latte was perfect as was hubbie’s tea.Great little stop. Highly recommended ❤️

We had the dressed crab and a soup & sandwich for lunch. Really good value, fresh home made food and the owner is verh friendly - would definitely recommend!

Hiked the 4.4 mile Helmsdale Explorer hike, quite a fun variety hike. This lovely small cafe was the perfect icing on the cake. Home cooked baked goods, delicious mains. Stone oven pizza... very good.

Came off the Helmsdale bypass on the A9 to have a break and find a nice place for a coffee.Noticed Thyme & Place which had a village appearance and I thought this would be a good place to stop. On entering I noted the establishment which was not very busy,to be small and cosy and I approached the counter to place my order.There were two servers and I ordered a black coffee with cold milk and I asked if I could have a roll and sausage to which the reply was favourable.The black coffee arrived speedily for which I was grateful but the roll and sausage didn’t arrive at all. When I had finished my coffee it seems the roll had been forgotten about, no doubt it WAS forgotten about and I was extremely disappointed with the lack of customer care. I then received an apology for the oversight but I had by then decided to take my business elsewhere in Helmsdale. Entering this establishment was a big mistake and I will not be going back.

This is a nice little cafe style restaurant that does excellent local sourced food. We ate in there twice during 4 day visit. Certainly the best option for food in Helmsdale. It does not open late so it is best to plan for an early evening meal. It is not licenced but you can bring your own bottle, which we sourced from the Spar shop next door.

Came with a friend for lunch on our travels and really enjoyed it. Had the soup, sandwich and coffee deal and glad we did. Lovely quiet atmosphere, friendly staff and the food tasted fresh and great

We stopped for morning tea and it was a good find. Lovely little place in a good place to stop, even easy to park. We had a slice of fruit loaf and a coffee and it was both fresh and delicious.

Friendly cafe just off the NC500 route ideal for a break. They just take cash but there is a cash machine near by

En route vers John o'Groats nous avons fait étape au Thyme and Plaice pour déjeuner. Petits plats traditionnels chauds et délicieux, servis en portions généreuses , à petit prix et avec un grand sourire, bref parfait ! Mention speciale pour le sticky toffee pudding ultra gourmand (parfait pour 2 ! ).

Just called for a cuppa. Very nice tea. While we were there two other customers ordered fish and chips. When it arrived the restaurant stank of fish. This should not be. It could even be smelt walking passed. Tip - if you want f&c; go to the takeaway across the road.

Food was great with lots of Choice. Freshly prepared. Friendly owner. Cake was home made and fresh. Seems Popular with locals

Stopped in for a mid-morning coffee (Americano) and slice of lemon cake while my wife was shopping across the street. Wow! Best coffee I’ve had in a long time and maybe best lemon cake ever. Took away one of each to go for her, they were both so good! Hope to go back soon for dinner or lunch, strongly suspecting that everything they do is great. Yum.

We have stopped off here on our way north a couple of times. Initially drawn in by the name of the place we were met with a friendly welcome and had gorgeous soup and sandwiches. It looked like regulars came in for bigger meals. definitely a place to visit.

Parked in the car park, had a wonder round took some photos, really need to re-visit this lovely village. I went in on a whim as i liked the name ha ha. four of us chose different things and we were all more than happy. Smashing helpful staff that guided me through the gluten free offerings, delicious and hot and fresh. nice hot coffees as well. nice and clean everywhere.

This is a small but very good and friendly restaurant. The owner/chef is excellent friendly with a small but interesting menu.

We regularly eat here, a family of 6 with 4 children. Lovely food, great service all reasonably priced. Chef does a wide variety of gluten free choices for my daughter. Great for lunch, evening meals and coffee & cake.

Party of 14 adults and 2 children visited for lunch on Easter Saturday. Food and service were excellent and customer service exceeded expectations. The owner gave the two children in the party a large Easter Egg each. Outstanding.

Was looking for a business in Brora but what with roadworks, found myself through that village and double-backed already in Helmsdale. Lunchtime and I decided to walk about the village and found the simple but delightful Thyme and Plaice. Attentive service and a much better menu choice than I had expected to find in such a small place, excuse the pun. I had the soup, sandwich and coffee offer which was very good value. Next time I'm this far north, I shall make a point of popping in again.

Great food and service. Didn’t have the fish and chips but it looked amazing. Great coffees and cakes. Dog friendly.

Fantastic breakfast and service, would totally recommend this establishment highly. The fair is excellent and varied, and a hot chocolate on a cold day is highly recommended. You would be given a very warm welcome and the highest of service.

This small restaurant, situated on Helmsdale's main street is cosy and friendly. Food is of an average price for the location and freshly cooked to order. My wife was pleased with the Haddock and chips dish but I was not impressed by the "Butcher's Breakfast". My eggs were so overcooked they were like rubber, the sausages were similarly overcooked and the beans of catering quality and my bread was buttererd...in the centre only. Looking around me, it seemed like the food in general was nicely presented but I would not recommend the breakfast; otherwise it was a pleasant break in a relaxed atmosphere.

Small atmospheric place with some nice home cooking, everything is fresh and tastes quite good, sandwiches, pies, salat, cakes. Friendly service and very reasonable price. We were here for a quick small lunch and were very happy with our choice. Highly recommended.

Excellent choice on menu with local sea fish. Owner very helpful ensuring we had the warmest table for elderly parents. Home baking , by owner was really good. Good value for money; would happily return.

This unassuming place is run as a one man band by the owner who puts together a very thoughtful menu and is welcoming to all. In fact the word "welcome" is on the door in many languages giving an indication of his perspective. Good portion sizes, nicely cooked and great service.The best meal we had on our NC500 trip.

Stopped for late lunch. Could tell by the menu this was something special. Which was then backed up by great local produce. The Baked Camembert was delicious and a bacon melt with Brie a nice touch

We saw the reviews and weren’t disappointed. Wonderful chicken and haggis with pepper sauce. Quite small so might get full sometimes. Cash only. Worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Stopped in here on my way back from a work trip. Great wee spot, delicious food at a great price. Good to know they use locally sourced food where possible. Extra points for the punny name. 10/10

Being creatures of habit we initially wanted to eat at La Mirage but they couldnt fit us in so recommended this eaterie, well we certainly will be going back, we had the beef and chicken skewers with chilli sauce and handmade chips, my mum cant eat alot and asked for a small portion of haddock and chips, the chef really understood and gave her less chips but a fair portion of haddock, she loved it, never seen her enjoy her meal as much, unfortunately we were in a rush so couldnt enjoy dessert, but will be back, my only criticism sorry guys I really wanted a glass of wine and being in the licensed trade would have happiy paid 5.00 for that.

I was in for a late lunch last week, and Robert never fails to please! I asked him to make me something healthy as I am on a diet, and he whipped me up something delicious and healthy in a few minutes. I don't know how he does it, but the food is always fresh, and he is a true chef. We are so lucky to have him here.

Took my sister in law for dinner along with rest of the family. She was very impressed. She had one of the specials on the menu. There is plenty of choice as well as the old favourites and the quality is always good. Rarely have room for dessert though as the portions are so generous!

A friendly stop off in the Far East. The service was swift and the homemade cakes were fresh and delicious. I would warmly recommend this cafe.

I recently visited on the 26th July 2018. My family is originally from Helmsdale, so I have always went up for wee holidays from the age of 2weeks old.

Stopped for lunch - the dressed crab was excellent. Needed to ask for one or two obvious things but the service was friendly.

Robert recently catered for our wedding evening party. We opted for a street food style buffet and it was perfect. Everyone agreed that the food was amazing and Robert was so relaxed and easy to work, which helped us to be relaxed. We chose Robert as our caterer after trying to food in the restaurant. We would highly recommend both the restaurant and Robert as a caterer for a private function.

Was lunchtime when we arrived and very busy, always a good sign. We were looked after immediately and invited to wait for a table on the comfy sofa. Food was clearly freshly prepared, hot and very tasty. Couldn’t ask for more!

We visited this restaurant as the menu looked very appealing and it did not let us down. The food tasted fantastic and there was a wide range available. The lady who served us was very friendly. Overall a great experience and would highly recommend!!

We had Pizza and a Steak Burger, and were very impressed. There's an extensive menu to cater for all and the owner is welcoming and exceptionally helpful. Definitely give Thyme and Place a visit!

Stopped for a bite of lunch on our trip to Northern Scotland. What a relaxing, tasty meal we had! Soup of the day was tomato ... hot, fresh, sopped up last bits with the wonderful bread. Choice of baked goods for dessert ... can't go wrong with any of them. Highly encourage you to plan your trip around this hidden gem.

Went into this restaurant last night for the first time but it certainly won't be my last. I am coeliac. The food was cooked fresh and made gluten free. The chef was helpful and was well versed in my dietary needs. Excellent food. Nice restaurant. And reasonably priced.

Great place ! Excellent tea, very tasty food (delicious mash), you won’t even need a knife to eat the meat.

We ate at Thyme and Plaice again this past week and were not let down. Robert continues to make big flavours in that little kitchen of his. I had fish this time and it was perfectly cooked. Finished with one of his excellent coffees.

Thyme and Plaice is a cafe open at the weekends for evening meals. I ate there on a Friday evening and my fish and chips were excellent, the battered fish fresh and the best I have had for a long time. Bring your own bottle

My family and wheel chair bound mother where made to feel welcome and accommodated for very well. Great pictures on the wall of local sights and lots literature to read. Service was prompt and very friendly. Food arrived quickly, hot and was delicious!

Arrived cold and hungry to a warm welcome. Left after roast beef dinner very happy. Coffee was the best I have had in a long while. Good value. We're here a week so no doubt will be back to sample more of the menu. A must vist place just along from the Spar.

Came upon this place by accident when we stopped for lunch whilst doing the NC500. Most impressed as they do soup, sandwich and hot drink deal for £7.95. It was delicious. Great coffee, home made pumpkin soup and huge sandwich. Lovely setting with delightful staff. The cakes looked amazing although we resisted the temptation.

Called here for an evening meal. I had the chicken and steak skewers, my wife had the chicken and haggis meal. Both meals were gorgeous and excellent value for money. Owner very friendly and service very good. Would recommend to anyone to eat here.

Just spent a week in Helmsdale and it was great to call in for a tea/coffee and snack before heading back to the B&B.; Thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and my chats with Rob the owner/chef. Worth stopping off if doing the NC500 or staying in Helmsdale.

Passing by Helmsdale and decided to stop for a bite to eat. Welcomed by a nice waitress and the chef....

We stopped here on our way through to Inverness. The cafe has good coffee and a toilet. In particular, try their slices; they have a delicious one, the name of which escapes me, made from almond meal (I think gluten-free). The cafe owner was friendly and helpful.

Thyme and Plaice has not failed to impress with their friendliness and great coffee several times I've been there. The other evening I had dinner there for the first time, and it was excellent. I had the lamb shank from the specials board, which was tender and succulent, placed on a bed of mash and served next to perfectly steamed veg. And very good value at £12.95.

My partner and I stopped here on our way from Dornoch to the Orkneys. We were looking for somewhere to grab a late lunch and happened upon Thyme and Plaice. Lovely little cafe, great service and food. We both had sandwiches and remarked that they were the best we'd had in the U.K. Pretty decent coffee too! Free wifi and in a nice little town. Well worth a stop.

Stopped here for a late lunch when travelling south from Orkney, and had a really tasty cheese and bacon burger which really hit the spot. There was a large choice providing anything for sandwiches and cakes to a full meal. Something for everyone.

Stopped here for breakfast on our way out of Helmsdale. Was not disappointed. We opted for the butchers breakfast which was very tasty and good value. The guy serving and cooking was very helpful and cooked the food exactly as we asked. To note the coffee was really good too. Thank you for our breakfast.

Nice, clean restaurant, with large choice on menu and specials board. We had soup and sandwiches. Homemade mushroom soup and homemade tomato and basil soups were delicious and fresh. Sandwiches came with a side salad of peppers onions and lettuce. Pot of tea for two included. Very filling and great value. Free WiFi. Would return.

After the Tripadvisor reviews we wanted to try this place out for dinner but unfortunately it wasn't open that night. However we unexpectedly parked up just down the road around lunchtime and gave it a go. There was a small group of Spanish bikers sat down otherwise it was empty. It's an eclectic looking place but and received a warm welcome inside. One bloke was doing everything from a tiny kitchen.Mrs Vicar ordered the dressed crab, the last one, while I settled on a soup and a sandwich combo. Mrs Vicar said the crab was very good whilst my mushroom soup was delicious. There's various fishy specials depending on what's available on the day but we were told they go quickly once up on the specials board.All good and reasonably priced.

Delicious home made food and great, friendly service! (We had mushroom soup, jacket potatoes, fish & chips and raspberry cheesecake... all excellent). Worth going there if you are on a road trip in the north coast of Scotland.

Wenige Gerichte, aber frisch zubereitet, ausgezeichneter Geschmack, traditionelle Küche mit Lammhaxe aber auch Burger und Meerestiere, auch Ausgefalleneres, Koch zaubert in einer Miniküche, unterhällt sich zwischendurch mit Gästen. Sehr flotte Bedienung, sehr freundlich, preislich gut, sehr nettes Lokal! Achtung schließt schon um 21:00

Friendly, helpful staff and lovely food. BYOB and they give you glasses! Could perhaps do with seat pads for the wooden chairs, but there are cushioned seats, too, and a comfy couch for 2 at the window.

I only wish we had been hungrier to enjoy some of the meals on offer, but the sandwiches we had were delicious...with a lovely big pot of tea, always a winner for me! Staying nearby, this was recommended for something to eat. Lovely food, interesting menu, very enjoyable and satisfying. Nice atmosphere, too.

We have stopped here previously for a 'coffee and cake'. I had noticed a large pile of recipe books , which implied creative cooking. As it was convenient , we chose this for an early evening meal. It offers a short menu ; baked potatoes, pizza's, fish n chips, etc. Limited vegetarian options. Service is friendly.

We stopped in Helmsdale for lunch and having spotted this from the window I made my way back to eat there, and so glad I did. Cosy, friendly and with a great selection of food - I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch. The only downside is that some of the people I was with couldn't finish their meals - you get generous portions :) I would highly recommend stopping here.. and try the chips, they are the best I've ever eaten, anywhere :)

What a brilliant, warm and welcoming place. If this had not been a pit stop so close to breakfast, we would have either eaten a breakfast bap or wolfed some of the lovely cakes on offer. Awesome.....if you are in the area, you must go - even to get a takeaway coffee/tea!
