Excellent , flexible dining time to suit most diners. Haddock & chips, smaller portion but Still big. Meal included bread & butter&a drink. I had a crab salad which was delicious. Menu had plenty of choice to include meat eaters& veggie .Restaurant very clean, the staff were lovely. Also do a takeaway menu from separate entrance. Would highly recommend.

Ate here last night as we were staying just up the Road. Well cooked, large portion of Fish and Chips with Mushy Peas and Bread and Butter. Save Room for the Puddings or they will be happy to box them for you to take away and enjoy later.

Stopped off here on way home from York. Clean CoVid safe restaurant, friendly staff and gorgeous fish & chips. We shall definitely return when we venture north again

The gluten free cod batter is absolutely delicious, lovely crispy batter and the best I've ever tasted. I had a take-away with chips and homemade Tartar sauce, all beautifully fresh. Thank you.

Not sure what's happened at Thompsons, always worth a run out from York to pick up a takeaway, but tonight-oh dear! Claggy hard chips, slimy batter on an extremely small fish and watery curry sauce that tasted powdery add that to the miserable staff and it doesn't make a great experience. Will be sticking to Brockfield Fisheries from now on

Well, this has to be the best around, huge portion of fish, lightly battered and perfectly cooked, along with the chips. Not greasy or oily at all. My wife and I had sides of curry sauce, baked beans, pickled onions and the best mushy peas according to my wife. Oh and she used to be a restaurant manager for a famous fish n chip chain in Hull. This food was far superior.Thompson is so well worth a visit. We had safe outside covered seating and it was safe inside as you place your order. Lovely friendly polite staff. Hot crispy battered juicy fish with big chips. Perfect

Had a lovely drive out to Thompson’s today. Served very promptly and politely. Excellent service. The food was flipping ace, as always: delightfully crispy batter, meaty fish and thick, fluffy chips. Looking forward to returning very soon!

Called in here today on the off chance of some gluten free to find a menu of so much choice to choose from. I went with cod chips and curry they were absolutely fantastic to top it off I was served by happy helpful staff. Given the current pandemic most people I come across are miserable it was a pleasure to be spending money in an establishment that made me feel welcome and served me outstanding food il be back next Tuesday lunch time for the same.

We always use this at least once a week. To say the food is superb it’s also very quick from ordering to receiving it. Had most things on the menu and never disappointed.

We visited Thompson's Fish Restaurant at the end of a day out walking in the freezing cold. The restaurant was warm, clean & inviting & we received a wonderful, friendly welcome from the staff. Our fish, chips, bread & butter & hot drinks were all served really quickly, piping hot & tasted delicious. Nothing was too much trouble for our lovely waitress, who looked after us so well & made our visit really special. We will definitely return next time we are over in that direction.

First of all, I can't fault the food. Stop here for takeaways and have had no problems until today. There was only one person in front of me in the queue and when that person went into the shop another couple came and came right up beside me to read the menu! Their masks were round their chins! And also smoking. They said sorry but did not move back. I managed to move sideways but they got closer and there was no more space to move, so I left. More people had arrived and were all pretty close to each other in the queue. I realise this is not the fault of Thompsons but I do think there should be 2 metre markings on the queue line. Won't be visiting again during covid

Midweek lunch between lockdowns for two. It wasn’t busy and we were shown to a nice table quickly. Everything was clean and social distancing was quite adequate. Unusual for me, I had a starter and chose the muscles. I was flabbergasted when a mountain of shells arrived in a very large dish. The portion was HUGE and I had to leave more unfinished muscles than I have been given in other restaurants. They were served in a nice broth to keep them moist along with some garlic bread. A finger bowl was supplied. My wife chose her usual Salt & Pepper Calamari and was well satisfied. We chose the Pensioners fish & chips main course thinking a small portion would be adequate after a huge starter .... Wrong! The portion of haddock and chunky fries was larger than many “ordinary” portions in other fish restaurants. The batter was just right and the fish tasted moist and fresh. An excellent meal

As always the fish and chips were perfect. Be warned this is proper Yorkshire food, no nouvelle cuisine, good honest food. Leave room for the trifle Got to be the best chip shop in the north

We are regulars here for our almost weekly takeaway and can’t fault the food. It’s consistently good. This evening we got our food home and discovered that our homemade tartare sauce, that we’d paid for, was missing. This is a part of our meal and very disappointing. Had this been a first occurrence I wouldn’t be writing this but it isn’t. We’ve had,in the past, missing chips and missing peas and only discovered on arriving home (Which I did notify them of). It’s such a shame when the food is so lovely that the staff seem to make these mistakes time and time again. It wasn’t even busy this evening. Hopefully this may prompt management to ensure that orders are checked and double checked before they are handed over.

What more can I say than all the other good reviews have already! I found the staff, polite, friendly, quick and good at their job. More than enough to eat, and the coffee and tea, which is included is good quality and also is plenty.

Fantastic service, food great and cooked fresh. We twice during our stay in Yorkshire.... Only gripe was...Theres too much, the portion size is massive haha Highly recommended.

Very impressed that the menu had things like fish pie and poached salmon as well as traditional fish n chips. Smart decor and pleasant staff. I ordered the fish pie and hubby ordered large fish n chips - which consisted of 2 large fish fillets. He said the peas were ‘proper’ mushy peas and fish was fresh. The fish pie and trimmings turned out to be quite a feast, with a lovely side salad, new potatoes and peas. The only thing I would have preferred was mash on the pie instead of sliced potatoes but overall excellent!

Came on a Friday lunchtime, this was the nearest Fish and Chips to Pocklington. Service was very quick for one Gluten Free and one 'normal' , the GF came from a different direction so looked well-segregated. Covid precautions were also perfect.20 minute drive home as the weather wasn't really good for using the picnic tables provided. Both servings were lovely, we will come back .

We arrived and straight away we were greeted by a member of staff who showed us to a table and took our contact detalis, we all ordered fish and chips with bread and butter. Within a few moments of ordering our food arrived and yet again it was perfection on a plate! Fresh fish with perfect batter and proper chips and yet again clean plates all round !! Lovely friendly chatty staff, everywhere was spotless and hand sanitise was available and visable everywhere... All worked like clockwork.

Family of 4 visiting from Scotland. We tried a few restaurants around the area & this was by far the best. Lovely staff, clean restaurant, social distancing in place , great atmosphere & fantastic food (portion sizes were great). Would 100% recommend!

As always the fish and chips were lovely but the service was awful!Firstly got told off for moving a few inches over the 'wait here line' to try and get out of the rain. I can understand them asking but to be spoken to like I was at school was not necessary. Secondly the lady who took us to our table was awful. So unfriendly. Didn't even look at us as she sat us down. The young blonde girl that took our order was actually quite pleasant and I can't fault her but the rest of the staff left a lot to be desired as far as friendliness was concerned. When we left, the misery that sat us down said good bye, again without eye contact or any kind of glance our way. (I think she may have been the manager, not sure but she was older than the other young girls).Once again, can't fault the food but your staff certainly let you down on this occasion!

Whenstuck in slow moving traffic on the A64 heading home to Filey I can personally recommend stopping here and watch the traffic slowly disperse.Covod friendly, quick, efficient and friendly.Haddock (huge!) Chips and mushy peas for me. This place is just consistent! Consistently great in terms of service and quality of product! Yes its a Fish & Chip Restaurant and Takeaway, how hard can it be? Well based on there being so many bad ones its obviously quite difficult and these guys just smash it!

We often plan our journeys to coincide with calling at our favourite fish restaurant. The food is always lovely and even a small portion is huge. The tables were well spaced out which made us feel safe.

This is a fish restaurant (inside) with a fish and chip take away on the A64 York to Malton road.Although 'take away' there are picnic tables available to sit at. We had knives and forks in the car which proved useful.Our haddock and chips were large hot and fresh and were very tasty.Covid-19 arrangements were OK.

Visited for tea on Saturday evening. We got haddock, chips and peas to eat outside. The food was absolutely delicious - fresh, juicy fish in light crispy batter. The chips were perfectly cooked and the mushy peas were just right. Yum! The shop was well organised taking into account Covid restrictions. Everything felt safe and was clean. The staff were very welcoming and cheerful. The service was efficient. The queue moved quickly. There were a number of tables spread out across the parking area for takeaway customers. It’s not a quiet, relaxing space but what else can you expect next to the main road? Anyway, the food more than made up for that. Can’t wait to go back. Thank you!

We have been half a dozen times over the last couple of years. Lovely and clean. Friendly and helpful staff. The food is wow. Great food and massive size and platefuls. Great value for money. Definitely worth a visit.

We have visited Thompsons many times over the years, try to come at least once a year when coming back from the east coast. Was not sure how it would be this year during the covid 19 restrictions but was keen to come. Checked the website before hand & it gave all the precautions they had I place . Visited on the Tuesday after the bank holiday. We were met by a member of staff at the door & shown to a table. Not very busy so felt very safe. We both had the prawn & cod fishcakes with chips peas & parsley sauce & also salad. Massive plateful for £9.95. As always fantastic & worth it. Waited all year to come back, so pleased we were able, Thank you Thompsons keep up the good work.

Our family of 6 had dinner at Thompsons while on holiday and everyone of us totally loved the delicious food. I had the fish pie and it was amazing. The staff are very friendly and the service was spot on

Called on a Tuesday evening, it’s always busy here but because of the government scheme it was exceptionally busy, we waited 5 minutes for our table, food was served like magic - imaculately presented, within 10 minutes of ordering! The staff were working their socks off, what an amazing place! Job well done.Well done to you all.

The value for money is second to none ,a tempting plateful of appetising food cooked to perfection ,costing much less than expected ,,the atmosphere was good and the staff friendly ,we enjoyed it very much and will be returning even when the government funding is finished .,the Wi-fi isn’t important to us we like to converse with each other not stare at a phone. ,they should be banned in restaurants.!

Stopped off on the way to the coast as it was tea time, ordered fish and chips, they had been cooked in that much oil that the oil came through the wrapper paper, once opened the fish was so soggy that the batter had come away from the fish, took it back and got another one from the hot counter which was exactly the same, soggy and greasy! Sausage and chips was ok nothing special! The woman’s attitude behind the counter was uninviting, the phone rang whilst I was there, she was rolling her eyes and huffing and puffing when they simply asked what time they closed! Won’t be returning here again ( well only if you want soggy greasy fish )

Visited after a long break. The fish and chips were yummy, crispy batter and tasty chips. The Gluten free fish and chips were back to being wonderful, back to being cooked in beef dripping again after a spell of being cooked in vegetable oil ( not nice at all ). The staff as always friendly lovely people.

Well, the resturant was well controlled and staff were lovely. We we sested and served drinks in a timely manner. Wr ordered our food. Fish and chips (wife) and a mixed platter (for me). Well the batter was light, non greasy and very crispy. The fish was a big fillet (medium was ordered) massive in fact. I had mussels, tampura prawns, fish bites, calamari and a fab salad plus chips. Piping hot and tasted fabulous. I have to say I'm fussy with f&c ad usually get heartburn, not this time. There was losds too. Various sauces available, tea, coffee and b&b. Reasonably prices, great car park too with plenty of spaces. Will definately re-visit. Loved it.

We always try to eat here whenever we go past but this was the first time we'd visited since lockdown. I was surprised and pleased to find only 1 person in the queue in front of us to eat inside on Thursday 30 July at about 5.30pm, though the queue for take-away was much longer. We were very pleased to see how well spaced apart the tables are. We were served quickly by a friendly waitress and greatly enjoyed our usual fish & chip supper (him) and prawn salad (me). I've yet to find a better prawn salad this side of Scarborough (the only rival is at Trenchers in Whitby). Why anyone would get take-away fish and chips when they could eat inside beats me!

I was a bit worried about using this take-away, having read some of the recent reviews, but need not have concerned myself. As we wanted food for 10 we ordered our meal by phone & then went to collect it. The ladies behind the counter were helpful, cheerful, and efficient. When we got back to base we all enjoyed a first=rate "fish supper" with good sized portions of excellent quality.

Visited en route to Whitby,which was a perfect stop off.We had a huge portion of ribs,lovely scampi and crab salad.The chef also made a vegan option ,even though there wasn’t one on the menu ! Thank you

First of all asked for 2 kids fish and chips (5pm) but they don’t do kids meals after 4 pm which is the strangest thing I’ve ever heard considering the queue was full of families.So got 2 large fish and chips and split them up, the girl put that much salt and vinegar on that it was inedible. Everything went soggy and the salt was just too sickly! Such a shame as it looked so nice. Spent £20 and it just got wasted!

Called yesterday on the way back from Whitby. Fish good as usual although by the time the rude girl that served me put so much vinegar on it the batter was soggy. The staff are usually so lovely. What's happened. We hope when the restaurant opens these girls won't be serving or we won't be bothering again. The manager is such a lovely lady. These lot are not a credit to her. Especially when they worked so hard to open takeaway during this covid pandemic.

We arrived to no queue so we were straight in and ordered our food. Upon arrival to the counter the woman who served us was very rude and not very welcoming- it was like non of the workers wanted to work there. There was not atmosphere when ordering the food and nobody spoke to us so it made us feel unwelcomed. We normally rate the fish and chips, we barely had any fish and it was mostly batter. Just an overall bad experience!

First time I have ventured out for something to eat since the start of lockdown. We decided on a takeout from Thompson’s, travelled from Bridlington and was not disappointed. Keep up the good work......

Home cooking is going fine during lockdown but what a treat to have Fish and Chips takeaway from Thompson’s. Very convenient social distancing measures in place and the speedy and efficient service for payment and wrap fro.m friendly staff makes the short wait ok. These past weeks with sunshine has helped, of course. The same high quality of fish and chips we are used to at the restaurant, there is a spacious car park and there are sitting out facilities with shade for al fresco dining. I look forward to at least a once a week treat until normal service can resume.

Driven past many times, so we thought we’d treat ourselves today. Got there for 11.30am on a Sunday for opening. Both had haddock & chips - huge portions - cooked fresh - superb. Social Distancing measures are in place - which work very well. Staff were very friendly. We will definitely be back.

Lovely fish. They generate a roaring trade from locals and passers by on the a64. So extremely frustrating that they would increase their prices during COVID19!!

Having been regular and enthusiastic restaurant visitors to Thompsons, the withdrawal symptoms were starting to bite when we found out that the takeaway was open again. There's no compromising standards here, the food is as good as always and I cannot speak highly enough of the homemade steak, mushroom and ale pie. The genuine article with plenty of lean chunks of steak.Despite the adequate and well organised Covid 19 precautions, service was quick and courteous, as always from Thompsons.

My husband and I had been waiting for Thompson’s to open for several weeks and yesterday we made our first visit and we were not disappointed How they have worked things is fantastic there one in one out policy works a treat and social distancing was been done When we arrived it didn’t take us long to be served by a very efficient friendly team Now to the fish and chips FANTASTIC THE BEST EVER and I did note there prices had stayed the same not like a lot of other places that have we had our fish and chips outside on the very clean table and chairs (social distancing again been thought off)This now will become a weekly event WELL DONE THOMPSONS

At Thompsons, you can either eat in or use the general "chippie" for take away fish and chips. We all decided to eat in the restaurant which was packed, a sign of how good it was. We were quickly shown to our table by a friendly and efficient waitress. The menu is reasonably varied but obviously mainly fish and chips and there is a pensioners option if you want it. Once ordered, it didn't take long to come. The fish was ample size and there were plenty of chips with either mushy or general peas. There was a choice of white or brown bread. Unlike some restaurants, the coffee and tea came in pots with extra water for plenty of cups.Nothing was too much for our waitress who fulfilled our requests efficiently. The cost isn't cheap but reflects what you get. We left feeling very satisfied with everything and will return soon.

Have been here numerous times, went today and yes the fish and chips were just as tasty fresh and hot. The fish tastes as though it has just come out of the sea and the batter is lovely and light. Chips fresh and hot just how I like them. Staff very polite and welcoming and very nice clean toilets with proper hand wash. Absolutely recommend this Fish Restaurant.

The most professional and amazing fish and chips restaurant in the world in my opinion. A must try for everyone.

We were not able to reserve in advance but there was plenty of capacity when we arrived on a cold wintry Saturday evening. The menu was quite extensive, meat dishes as well as a selection of fish dishes. We opted for good old fish and chips which were delicious and more than we could eat. The desserts looked good but no room left. The Staff was polite, helpful and efficient. We would highly recommend you visit if you are looking for a quick meal.

Great service, lovely clean restaurant. Beautiful Cod but some of the chips we found were gritty! A shame really because everything else was good.

I don’t normally write reviews but feel on this occasion it was must!! We called in tonight (Monday) to be greeted by a happy smileing young lady who made us feel so welcome sat us down and our order taken the food was absolutely fantastic this is a place not to miss it was our first visit but certainly not the last!! To enjoy food to that standard accompanied by the cheerful sweetness of our waitress is somewhat hard to find these days cannot recommend this place enough thank you see you again very soon!!!!

Well I have wrote about Thompson’s in the past but needed to tell people again how consistently good this place is theirs no up and down in service and the quality of the food served here, never by no means small portions and if you do have space left the desserts are fab too my all time favourite is cheesecake it alters every so often but each one is lovely such a varied menu it caters for all we rarely miss a week and if I do I crave to go that’s how good it is, and tbh I am fussy with quality and service in restaurants and quick to complain if something is not up to standard this I have never had to do here not once

Went in the takeaway and sat in the takeaway seating area. Large cod cooked to order and was gorgeous. Best fish & chips in the North of England by far!

We were en route from Lincoln to Pickering, avoiding the Humber bridge due to high winds. Then suddenly, not even in a town, this place came up. It has a to go section and a restaurant- it was too early for us to eat but many were having fish n chips - portions looked huge and food looked great. We had drinks, used the nice clean toilets, and headed out - but this is a lovely place!

Not the best food but it is alright would like it to be better next time I go there apparently the restaurant is better than the takeaway

I cannot rate our experience at Thompsons on a busy Valentine's evening high enough. I had thought being a highly rated fish restaurant, the other options, of which there was plenty, might be a little second rate. How wrong we were. I had gammon which was succulent and tender, cooked to perfection and 2 of our party had the fish pie which was loaded and creamy and complemented with new potatoes and a beautiful salad. The fish n chips were excellent too and how we managed it after the huge main portion sizes, I have no idea, but we all had a dessert. The full menu including desserts was varied with a good choice of fish, meat and vegetarian dishes plus sides and daily specials.

The food here has to be the best fish and chips in the country. There is a huge selection of alternatives, but the fish, and the batter!! here is just amazing.

Oh my gosh, I'm back again. When you tell yourself that this year,you will be good, you won't indulge in treats... then you pass Thompsons! If you aren't sure whether to try the takeaway or the restaurant, just try both, just not on the same day... unless you want to.

Like most of the adult population, I have been on a healthy eating mission since the new year, and have only lapsed a couple of times, (give or take...) so when Mr M suggested a ride out to Thompsons, quite frankly, i was horrified: I knew it would be the start of a slippery slope, starting with fish and chips, and culminating in complete lack of willpower - think White Goodman in the closing scene from 'Dodegball: A True Underdog Story'. Mr M was clearly prepared and thrust the online menu under my nose, pointing out that I could always have a salad. I wouldn't even travel to my own kitchen to have a salad in the middle of winter, let alone drive an hour!

Went for tea last night and the food was amazing And the quality of service was fabulous Will be returning 5 stars don’t do it justice

Amazing food in large portions and small prices, would recommend anything on the menu, although lasagne is one of my favourites as well as the gammon. Never have room for a pudding though!!!

I have never tasted fis, chips and curry sauce like this anywhere that I have been before, the portion was plentiful, looked very apertising and tasted even better, the staff were very friendly and service was prompt, I would recommend a visit to Thompsons Fish Restaurant as soon as you can

As a family we call at Thompson’s on a monthly basis usually on a Monday or Tuesday night .

VEGAN choices but couldn't have chips -they cook them in BEEF DRIPPING - left without ordering. This place is NOT suitable for vegans -the owners are just following the fad, not the serious issue of those who cannot have any meat product, including those of us who cannot because of serious dietary issues!

First visit after being recommended, and can’t fault anything. Best fish (cod) and chips I can remember having. Others had grilled cod cooked well, with a freshly dressed mixed salad. Overall fantastic food , will be back!

It was very busy when we came but the wait was worth it. Fish and Chips tasted great and the sticky toffee pudding here is the best I've ever tasted! Hope to be back 😀👍🏼

I had a fabulous dinner here with my grandchildren! My grandson has a nut allergy and the chef was so kind and helpful -nothing was too much trouble!

Thompson’s always seems to be busy. More than likely a good sign. The portions are generous and the chips are incredibly crispy. The restaurant looks lovely, but I’d recommend buying from the adjacent fish bar and taking them home, for that nostalgic authenticity.

Have to set some things straight after the awful review . I have worked at Thompsons for over 10years and have eaten there many times. Even though I left 6months ago I can assure you that the food is always cooked to order. It is always fresh and does not sit out for hours on end. The staff is amazing. They work very hard and have long days but are always friendly . Some people have nothing better to do than moan and should stay at home.

Over once more in England from Ireland, we always visit Thompsons, I dream of these fish and chips. My dreams came true, they were once again magnificent, the staff could not do enough for us, just gorgeous.

Entro en Thompsons en alguna ocasión si paso. Por lo general, me conformo con eglefino y papas fritas, con su mezcla crujiente ligera, chips frescos y suaves y guisantes blandos. Muy abundante, debo decir, todo recién preparado. El personal es muy amable y dispuesto a conversar un poco mientras espera.

Having been here many times for takeaway fish and chips the standard has remained great over the years.Great service and generous portions.some items have to be cooked to order as haddock is the main fish here.Large car park off A64 but as i have said on many of my recommendation it is best to approach Thompsons from York as trying to cross the A64 is not only hazardous but very dangerous even in a car.

This is a Fish & Chip restaurant. It offers alternatives but its prime asset is a well-deserved reputation for great, simple, fish and chips meals. Service is friendly and quick. Food is excellent and very reasonably priced. Decor is uninspiring but you don't go for the atmosphere or the furnishings - it's straight-forward great British food. It is highly recommended nationally as one of the top chippies in England, deservedly so. They also offer take-aways but I'd recommend a restaurant visit to sample a disappearing English favourite, the Fish and Chip Restaurant.

Had a particularly stressful and long journey on the way for various reasons, but we eventually turned up towards end of service on a Saturday night.

Great place to get excellent food the service was excellent and matched by the food. It’s also one of the best take away shops around as well.
