Nice traditional pub atmosphere in a good setting on the high street. Offers usual beers and standard pub grub. Limited parking at the front. Enjoyed the pulled pork and cider pie.

I cannot stress enough do not eat here, the restaurant bar area was dirty food was awful, they advertise homemade burgers but they are clearly defrosted on site as the ping of the microwave was sounding from the kitchen, the potatoe wedges were vile and a piece of plastic found in my child's fish finger. They would be better off not serving food at all as the public is at risk.

Found the pub on-line on spec for a lunch with my wife. A great find. A variety of choice on the menu and good tasty food. The pub is rustic and old fashioned (just what we wanted) with a fantastic atmosphere. I tried the more traditional choice whilst my wife had the South African bean stew. Brilliant. Whilst we were eating four Rhodesian (Ex Pats) came in to give the pub "a once over". They were impressed as it reminded them of there time in South Africa. I had a long talk with one of them who turned out to be an ex Rhodesian fighter pilot living in Bognor and said that finding the Winterton Arms brought back a lot of happy memories of his time abroad. A really wonderful experience. And to cap it all a spitfire from Goodwood flew low over the area.

We went for lunch using a Groupon voucher and were apprehensive after reading other reviews, but we were pleasantly surprised. Had three courses, including from the South African section, and everything was good, I especially liked the meatballs, they were lovely. Service was good and the selection of Real Ales was very good. There has been a lot said about the decor, but my wife and I thought it was very nice. It has had a recent lick of paint, but it is kitted out like a traditional country pub, including wood beam ceiling and wood burning fireplace. Would recommend especially if you want something a bit different.

This was our second visit and you can see that the owners have taken on board all these comments. The pub has had a facelift and is looking fresh and clean but still keeping it as a country pub. The food was delicious and well presented, portions were very generous with hand cut chips to die for!!This pub definitely deserves a second chance.

Had a meal recently as part of a groupon deal, menu has some interesting South Africa items on it. I had a pleasant Durban Curry followed by an equally nice Sticky Date Pudding. The host/ barman/ waiter made us very welcome and was attentive. The beer is kept very well with a good selection of South African Wines. However the place was dead, empty except for us with the radio playing for company. The interior is grubby and desperately needs updating, even a deep clean and some paint might help, it is in a good position being close to the A27 has easy parking, but without upgrading the general ambiance of the place its future maybe bleak. To be in an empty Pub on a Friday Night isn’t a good indicator… Food/ service/ drinks great.. ambiance needs work. If you are going to have a South Africa feel then make it feel like a South African Pub-- make it like a Shebeen?

A Groupon voucher drew us to this country pub. Very much a 'locals' pub, nothing wrong with that, we were made to feel welcome. A couple of real ales on offer but both 'weak' in strength, i could understand one being 3.7 or 3.8 but surely, not both? The menu is heavily influenced by the South African dishes - not a bad thing as my beef casserole was tasty and wholesome. Unfortunately, my wife chose Haddock & chips, overcooked I'm afraid to say.The service throughout our evening at the pub, not in question and friendly. I appreciate these are difficult financial times for everyone but the pub needs some refurbishment, urgently for most peoples taste.

We recently wasted our money on a Groupon deal for this pub. Very grubby looking, bland food, and no atmosphere. Came here with friends and left disappointed.Everything overcooked and wished we had stayed home and cooked...at least it would all been fresh and tasty.Waste of an afternoon and our hard earned money. Even with a voucher it wasn't value for money. Our one and only bad experience using groupon for meal deals.

Attended today for a pub lunch and were a bit apprehensive after reading some of the recent reviews. However, as we were using a Dealmonster voucher we went along with an open mind. Have to say we were pleasantly surprised. Okay the pub is a little shabby, but that aside the food was good. The service was as you would expect in a country pub, but definitely not unfriendly or rude. The starter of Whitebait was served fairly quickly and arrived lovely and hot and there was certainly plenty of it. We had a fair wait for our main, but when it arrived it was certainly worth it. Unlike previous reviews we were asked during our meal if everything was okay. We would have no hesitation in returning to eat at this pub in the future.

Right where do I start.... Once arriving at the pub sat down to look at the menu...I Previously viewed the menu online so I knew exactly what I wanted... There too find a white sticker put over 5 special dishes which were 'new to 2014' so my only other option I liked was a ribeye steak... The gentleman then said to me that the only thing they were out if was the fillet... So I replied that's fine as I'm only interested in the ribeye... He then continued saying well I'm not sure if we have those either... So I asked if he could find out which he didn't bother too. Anyway once going to order asking again if he had any ribeye he said let me check.... Then errr yes yes we have those... So we ordered two ribeye steaks both medium rare... Our steaks come out both well done... And as thin as a frying steak! Immediately asking them to look at the steak agreeing in was well done... He took the steaks away then come back saying sorry we don't have any more... They were the last two.....What do u want me to do... Seeing in his face that he wasn't happy ... I said were both have the porterhouse then, then he replied... Err well, wait one moment... Going back into the kitchen and promptly coming out saying yes yes we've found another two??? We thought it was rather strange... Then come out our steaks, he then followed on to tell me if I wanted a medium rare steak I should always ask for a rare????? I don't think so, if I want a medium rate steak then I should get a medium rare steak shorly!! Considering this steak £17.99 normally. Anyhow cutting into this steak for the second time the steak was rare... Mooing... No seasoning on the steak.. And a foul smell like the steak was off... The sauce came in a paper cup placed on the plate so once trying to get the sauce out the cup was disintegrating whilst eating it... The chips had been refried and the onion rings we ordered separately re warmed in the microwave!! Thank god for the taste card because I can't justify how they get away with serving such foul food to the public for that price... With a chef that obviously doesn't have a clue how to cook, buying the cheapest cut of ribeye ever! Worst meal out ever!!!!!!

Our experience here unfortunately was not good in the slightest.on arrival we were told where our table was (not shown to it). We waited a while before the landlady took our orders. First impressions go a long way and even though its a country pub its not ideal being served by someone with muddy shoes and a very scruffy jumper! It doesn't give confidence when she is in and out of the kitchen! Our meal started off promising as our starters were lovely. We then waited an HOUR for our mains. Its not as if they were busy. There was one other family in our part of the pub and they were given the wrong food which was rectified surprisingly quickly. they had waited as long as we had but the replacement dinner came out in five minutes flat? The landlady asked the gentleman if all was ok with their meal and he very politely replied that no, it was not. The landlady went into a rude rant which was shocking. How the customer kept his cool I do not know. He said that she had asked and he had given his honest opinion. A lot of food had been left by the family so he was totally justified in his opinion. The landlady then put her hand up and said "WHATEVER!" and carried her rant on in the kitchen.totally shocking and unprofessional. Our main meal was terrible. The lamb was overcooked, tough and difficult to swallow. Shrivelled up new (or old!?) potatoes and frozen (or tinned veg) It justified a complaint to be honest but we could not risk having the landlady rant at us.... we just wanted to pay and leave.I agree with other reviewers about feeling awkward. Service is slow and dreadful. You are not made to feel like a paying customer. We ended up going to the bar to pay after sitting for 15 minutes at our table after our meal finished. Mix up with bill topped the experience off.this landlady needs some guidance in customer service. Sometimes you will get negative as well as positive feedback and you need to take it on the chin, be polite and professional and realise that you got a negative for a very good reason and try and improve upon it.

Must be noted that we were lured to this place by groupon vouchers and the attraction of the South African experience. On arrival we had to run the gauntlet through the smokers at the doorway. Having made it inside we were finally informed where our table was having been ignored at the bar for a while. It was an area which perhaps previously had been a storeroom and was Africanised with a flag and a few pictures of the big five animals which I'm sure used to be at my mums house in the 70's. A mishmash of tables and chairs " informally arranged. ) It took ages for someone to take our drinks order but eventually we were being served by the landlady of the establishment. She blew hot and cold explaining the menu but then huffing when a diet coke was requested and wrong food was served at the table.Various staff came and served us during the evening which probably helped towards the disjointed evening and bill confusion . It was very much a locals pub crossed between League of Gentleman and Fawlty Towers with warmth provided by 2 paraffin heaters. We felt we were an inconvenience. We would not re-attend. One bright spot was the young lady who was cooking and being a waitress and probably not being paid enough.

First thing that hit me was the smell of the toilets. Stood for a while waiting to be seated (awkward). Was made to feel like I'd changed the entire menu because I wanted normal mayo with my starter although the waiter/landlord/lost child did make a joke about it. Food was ok but I wouldn't recommend it if I'm honest. Camping table in middle of the pub with a few candles dose not a good evening make. However we liked the fire. Asked about pudding but waiter/landlord/lost child didn't really know about them,so we left. However the Nelson Mandela calendar made us laugh ( see picture)

Thank you Groupon for helping us find this pub - the offer was good and the food very good. It was nice to see something different on an English Pub menu, and all home cooked. Good sized portions, reasonably priced, and a friendly landlord who was happy to pass over his recipe for the Durban Curry Powder he makes made for a very pleasant evening. Landlord has taken something of a gamble, as it is not the easiest place to find in the dark, but he deserves every success.

Driving along the A27, we spotted a hand written sign for this pub in the hedge (the sign, not the pub....!). It's just off the main road, in what looks like a small hamlet. As others have written, it's a quirky place with something to look at in every corner. Plus, an open fire and friendly owners. We loved it!Food was freshly cooked and arrived hot. Can recommend the roast potatoes - proper ones, crispy and tasty. Definitely worth finding and would recommend.

A groupon offer lead us to this pub offering a South Africa meets UK MenuThis very traditional pub hidden away in the countryside near Chichester is literally 30 seconds from the a27. The pub itself is authentic country inn, no fake beams. A real old fashioned pub with Mismatched furniture, tables and sofas. We had a corner of the bar to ourselves with a table laid ready and waiting.Taking two South African friends, ourselves and a daughter apiece made for a party of six.We were warmly welcomed by the staff, but stared at a bit by the few locals around the bar. We got drinks and made ourselves at home. From the UK sided and South African sided menu we ordered two courses initially. The adults going for the South African side of the menu the Kids sticking firmly with the stuff they know from the UK side.We ate Peri Peri Chicken livers which were superb and served with French Toast, a butternut Squash Soup also described as delicious The kids had Southern Fried Chicken Strips which were homemade, served with garlic mayo and were very good. Well I had to sample one! My friend’s wife had whitebait, she enjoyed this as well although a declined to sample these as they remind me of the stickleback fish caught at the local pond when we were kids. For a main course I had a Rump steak with Monkey Gland sauce (a fruit bbq style sauce) served on the side with Chips – Home made chips which would be worth a second visit just for the chips!A Bunny Chow Chicken curry served in a hollowed out bread loaf was described as completely authentic as was a Cape Malay curry. My wife ate a Boerie Burger– A burger made with South African Spices and also served with al Monkey Gland Sauce and those amazing chips. The kids had Fish and Chips and Ham Egg and Chips respectively, both being unable to finish their plates but still managing to eat masses of ice-cream for dessert. The adults had Peppermint and Caramel Mint tart which was terrible! Don’t buy it!Leave the whole thing for me; I want the world supply of this pie, or at least the recipe. This mint tart was superb, really, really good and complemented by simple vanilla ice cream it was perfect. We also had a Cape fruit cake with brandy sauce which was also very nice, but not as good as the mint tart! The service was friendly pub style the food was served well and appropriately timed. A good selection of beers and ales is available alongside a number of South African imported drinksWe enjoyed our extended lunch at this nice pub; it is well worth a visit if you fancy eating something not currently available in many areas. My true SA friends described the place as awesome and are planning a number of return visitsGive the Winnie a try...

This pub, just off the A27, was due to be closed, but the enterprising new owners have started to build up the business again. The Scottish chef's cooking is influenced to a degree by his S African wife, so there are some interesting variations on the menu, as well as standard pub fare. They are clearly focussed on building the business up, & deserve to succeed. When cashflow permits, I'm sure they will be able to improve the rather basic decor in the restaurant. The food was interesting and good value.

I arrived at the upstairs bar and grill at around 5.15pm. It was half empty and I was approached by a man who I assume was the manager. I asked for a table for two, of which there were plenty. In a rather condescending tone he informed me that they were fully booked. I drew his attention to all the empty tables and was told rather abruptly and unapologetically that they would be occupied later. As it was not yet 5.30pm I think it would have been polite of him to perhaps have said, 'We are expecting a rush at about six o' clock, but you are welcome to a table until then'. After all they serve only drinks and snacks.

We arrived at around 2 ish on 6th April 2023. Our first impression was that they were closed it was very dark and quiet. We did some some other people sitting at tables so we waited by the sign that said "Please wait here to be seated"... And we waited, and we waited, and we waited... At last, a staff member came into view from behind the bar. He then diligently avoided eye contact and proceeded to completely ignore us. He disappeared back into the kitchen. That's OK I thought, he's probably telling somebody that there are customers waiting to be seated. The same staff member made another brief appearance behind the bar and once again ignored us. Game over, we left and went on to have a fantastic meal at a restaurant called "Bill's" just around the corner. Rule 1, page 1: Even if you're busy, do not ignore customers ever! "Apologies for the delay folks, somebody will be with you very shortly" is all he needed to say in order for you to keep a customer and avoid a scathing review. What you have done is loose me as a customer, not just in Chichester, but nationwide, forever. Which is a shame because I really like your food.
