The best pie I’ve had for a long time and the belly pork was super a proper pub 😀

Nothing to look at outside but great pub and the best food. Absolutely lovely.

Such a warm welcome! We felt welcome. The food is delicious! Loved the fried brie and bacon-wrapped chicken breast. Good selection of beers.

Really tasty food, good value and great service. Took the grandkids and in all honesty, I was expecting another so-so pub meal but it exceeded my expectations. Would certainly recommend it.

Had fish and chips £16, latte,£2.90 crispy beef and noodles £14.40 peppermint tea £2.60 . Seated quickly, very quiet on Friday. Cooked to order,short wait. Worth the wait Food was excellent, good portions. Service very good. Would I eat here again , yes

What an absolutely stunning find this pub is,great atmosphere,dog friendly,lovely home cooked food which was hot and flavoursome,sausage and mash withgravy to die for,chicken wrapped in bacon was delicious,staff made you feel so welcome.Wont be too long till we return.Thankyou

Haven't been in here for years on end and last time it was a run of the mill boozer requiring more effort. Its now a totally different place - unrecognisable. Great selection of beers, lagers, great food and friendly staff. Going back soon.

Love the Winning Post, been going since we lived opposite, over 30 years ago. The place has changed loads since then, the food is good, the function room is well setup as is the outside area. It’s still a pub though, with a bar area and some decent ales, cheers!!

We went here on Saturday, just 2 of us. Luckily we had booked as it was busy. We were seated very quickly and had drinks within 5 mins. The menu is not huge which is good and there was a good mixture of dishes + a specials board. We decided to share a starter and dessert which turned out to be a good idea. For main I went for beef bourginion and my wife had stuffed chicken, wrapped in bacon. The portions are huge!! The beef was melt in the mouth and the chicken was cooked perfectly. The only thing we noticed was maybe a slight lack of seasoning but honestly that might be just us. Starter and desserts were again really good. The service we received was the best we have had anywhere for a long time. If the managers are reading this please keep doing what you do to keep your excellent staff. So Starter, dessert, 2 mains and a couple of drinks later and the bill was about £55. We will be going again.

Had the most delicious meal from the specials board, chicken breast with pepper sauce, bacon mash and seasonal green veg. This is a proper down to earth pub with a cosy atmosphere (not a fancy expensive gastropub) and the food was amongst the best we've ever had. Highly recommended.

We popped into the Winning Post in York for lunch with our dog. From the warm welcome to the delicious homemade fresh food cooked to order we had a good experience. The staff are friendly and genuinely go out of their way to make sure everything is good. We highly recommend this great pub and will definitely be calling in again next time we visit York.

Good news. Got served a pint and before I said a word the the barman noticed it wasn’t good enough (no bubbles) and the glass needed changing. First time this has happened to us in any pub in York. Well done Winning Post.

The food was very good, with very generous portion sizes. The pub is much larger than you would initially think with lots of seating. Very friendly staff who were on hand to provide drink top ups. I would recommend booking at the weekend. We will be going back again!

Called in on the way back to York Race course and was surprised how friendly and clean the pub was. Outside look as always put us off going in. We had food and drinks and we all really enjoyed our visit.

Quiet Sunday night in this local pub. We had a great Sunday Roast and craft ale, with the dog welcomed.

Remarkable food for a wake..Well done!

When searching for a dog friendly pub to grab some lunch we came across this gem. Even though we arrived just as the kitchen was closing we were welcomed with nothing but amazing service. The dog were given treats and water. And all 9 of us had some of the best food we'd eaten in a very long time. I personally had the chicken burger which was fantastic, but had food envy over every other plate. I can not recommend this pub highly enough and look forward to a return in the future.

Absolutely incredible meal that everyone of our party enjoyed. We had a great table in the restaurant and we could see the food being prepared in the open Kitchen. Glad to see the menu the menu wasn’t massive but what was on it was exceptional. Every main course was amazing , the staff were superb and all in all a fab experience. The communication before the booking was excellent as well. Saying we were in a Friday. Night as well as a bar full of race course visitors the staff did brilliant. We ate in town on Saturday and Sunday night at two different restaurants as they were booked before our visit but they were no where as good as this place. Credit to all the staff …this place is fantastic. Next time we are in York this will be the first place we book

Two couples and a dog on a weekday evening. There was an extensive menu and food was ok but not perfect. For example, the noodles were over salted. The staff were efficient and pleasant and food came quickly. Our dog was welcomed and was brought a bowl of water. Pleasant enough but nothing special.

Would have easily scored a 5 as food was delicious. However we did have to wait over 1 hour to get our food - we had been told about 40 minutes. The table beside us got their order taken before us despite us being there first. Was busy however communication could be better and the waitress was very busy

Great place just outside the city centre but we’ll worth the walk. Decent selection of both keg and cask beer and the food was absolutely amazing, well above standard pub food, all fresh and great value. Service was spot on couldn’t fault anything, we will be back

This is one of our GREAT local establishments. Perfect beer garden. Lovely staff. But I’m really disappointed today. Myself, my husband and my daughter. Two Sunday dinners for £15 per person.Home made goats cheese arancini for £6.50. 2 drinks each about £30. Then (mic drop) a request for skinny fries instead of big fatties. Request was met with a NO because the chips have been portioned and ONLY come with beef brisket. Bear in mind this Sunday the pub was absolutely dead (I’ll post some photos) and highly unlikely that anyone would order the beef brisket when it’s Sunday, 26 degrees and most folks will order Sunday lunch or something light (like arancini!!!). You’d think they’d be able to say ‘aw go on then. Some skinny fries aren’t too much trouble. PLUS you’re locals, PLUS you’re spending about £60 in total on pints and food’. Did they take this sympathetic approach? Nope. We ordered anyway but FFS Winning Post. This is really absolutely shoddy. Big fat disappointing review for one of our favourite (up until now) local pubs. How hard can it be to give us some skinny fries? Anyway, meal arrived, decent portions but the beef was so pale it looked like turkey. I’m not even sure it was beef (check the photos). It was very tasty but looked anaemic. Arancini was 10/10 according to daughter but experience as a whole was incredibly disappointing.

Great service and knowledge and welcoming staff. Reasonable price and lovely food. Very knowledge about my dietary restrictions without give explanation. Loses 1 star for having no gluten free waffles in stock at the time of our visit

This is the first time I’ve been to the winning post and there was a table of 8 of us. The food is immense. The pie I had was just so good. My girlfriend had the chicken strips and they were fabulous. The service was faultless and it’s just a great place to be. Well done guys we will be back

Stopped here en route to York with family, 6 adults and two children. We had pre booked and the table was ready, lovely food and varied menu, highlight for my neice and I was the amazin mixed fruits crumble sundae! I am a wheelchair user and a ramp was provided to allow access and we were seated close to the disabled loo, little things like this mean a lot. I would definitely go back and recommend highly

We went on a Tuesday lunch time, we chose here as it is dog friendly and has decent reviews on here. It was not busy, just a handful of people in. Staff were friendly. I had the Massaman curry with prawns and my husband had the roast chicken. Both meals were delicious. Our dog was given a little pet, a treat and a bowl of fresh water (which was good as he is fussy not drinking out of communal dog bowls) . I would definitely return!

It's called The Winning Post and yet on York Race Day no coverage of any racing on any of the TV's....seemingly they are only used for BINGO & Quizzes. Hardly anybody in and the very rude female member of staff asked us to keep our noise down whilst watching a Race on a Mobile Phone. We certainly won't be going again👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽 Following the reply from the 'hosts'. Firstly, we did go to York Races and were infact watching a Race from another Race Course on a Mobile. Secondly, four men rooting for a horse on a mobile phone is hardly 'raucous' Finally, you didn't ask us to leave, we were leaving your virtually empty Pub ourselves due to our disappointment at the facilities available.

Just popped in after a pleasant afternoon in Rowntree Park, had a great meal, prompt and friendly service, they have an excellent menu of freshly prepared local produce and wide range of craft ales, can definitely recommend them.

Top notch food. We went for Sunday lunch, and chose from the weekly menu (although the Roasts being served all looked very good). We shared the Tempura Harrisa Cauliflower for starters which was excellent. We had Cod from the specials menu (bang on), and the Beetroot and Leek Risotto with grilled Goats Cheese for mains, and shared a Banoffee Pie for dessert. Top quality food, great range of craft ales and spirits, friendly staff, and good value for money. Would highly recommend as a great place for a meal out.

Four of us had a really nice meal cooked really well cooked, big pieces of home made chicken goujon starter, the chicken burger main was a proper big piece of chicken breast fillet not something bought from a supermarket, great steak burger and proper home cooked chips. Lovely piece of raspberry and chocolate brownie for dessert. Great staff, prompt service. Only reason not 5 stars is its only a small menu choice but everything we got was lovely.

Really tasty food: crispy fish and chips and sunday special- sausage pork. Nice staff. 10 minutes walking from the crowded city center. Highly raccomanded.

Friendly place great value food

Amazing pub, worth every penny on the food the pub has to offer you don’t leave disappointed. Then it’s worth to mention the lovely team that is working at the pub, nothing seems too much trouble for them and they all look like they enjoy working at the pub which is of course a good sign.

Booked here for somewhere to eat with family the night before our wedding because it's family and dog friendly. It did not disappoint. Best food I've had in a long time, not too expensive and the staff were lovely. Great atmosphere too. Highly recommend.

So glad we found this gem of a place on our last night whilst visiting York for a few days. Amazing food and great presentation too, truly a professional kitchen. Huge portions, great value. Gravy in the jug and these were my leftover chips which were so good.

Steak and ale pie is amazing. Very friendly staff and a good selection of beers makes for a very good pub dinner. Greatly recommended for a pub meal
