Delightfully natural and unpretentious. We felt at ease as soon as we walked in.They took a lot of trouble getting our drinks right. I could have eaten everything on the menu. It all sounded great.I was just about able to eat 3 courses without feeling overwhelmed.A perfect balance of flavours. If you are looking for basic pub food in huge quantities don't go here..it's not for you.For us it was well worth the extra cost to be able to find something that I couldn't easily cook at home. And the remoteness of the location adds to the whole experience. Thank you.

This small, personal restaurant is in the centre of Lochaline, adjoining the Village Store. It has a very unusual & interesting menu, based around locally sourced ingredients, wholly prepared on site. The inclusion of local flowers & herbs in the dishes makes it a quite unique & intimate experience .There is a range of well chosen & unusual wines available to complement meals.Service is excellent, all food is prepped to order, so be prepared to wait, its worth it.

We had dinner here recently and the whole experience was fantastic. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly, also very professional. We opted for 4 courses on top of the amuse-bouche and were absolutely stuffed afterwards! The portions look small but they add up. Ok, visited this place much earlier than the date stated due to the limitations of the app. The visit was actually a penance, having booked a dive trip with my pals to the area then realised it clashed with my first wedding anniversary! All I can say is that I’m bless with a very tolerant and good humoured wife!Ok so the restaurant - staff are amazing, very friendly and accommodating - particularly so as we had only rocked up in the afternoon and the kind lady over at the dive school got us in there with an hours notice!Quality of the food was spectacular- my favourite was the local scallops which were somewhat on the large side!

We have visited The White House for many years. The early day enthusiasm for innovation and experimentation coupled with great skill and imaginative use of local produce has all but disappeared. Today even our welcome was muted and charmless and the kitchen urged us to get a move on to order our meal. There was a distinct atmosphere of “ let’s get the customer out ASAP”. The food was our saving grace and still retains some of the quality but not all and presentation was very reminiscent of previous years fare. Perhaps a little more enthusiasm from staff to make guests feel more welcome and a little more enterprise with the menu would help restore the praise which the White House certainly deserves.

4 of us called in here for dinner, having been several times before. If you are lucky enough to be on a boat it is not off the beaten track but right on the main drag. The evening was wonderful from start to finish. We had a warm welcome, a delicious amuse-bouche, 4 courses consisting of dishes we had not previously encountered and full of interesting flavours and two excellent bottles of wine from their unusual list. The vegetarian in our party was specially catered for and loved his separate dish. The staff were very pleasant and at the end the chef was happy to chat about what he is doing. Long may this high standard continue.

Our last day of our holiday in the Highlands and we went on our last walk to a "Cleared" village at Inniemore. Scotland decided to sprinkle some of its delightful main commodity on us during the walk. (It actually peed down and we were drenched. So wet we had to take our socks off!) It being lunchtime we thought we might find something in Lochaline just up the road. We didn't hold a lot of hope and guessed we would end up with fish and chips or a pie of some sort.

An unpreposessing, but attractive exterior hides a small, intimate restaurant of outstanding quality. The set menu...changes daily....offers sufficient choice for most and is able explained by those serving. Four courses more than satisfied us all - even my hungry husband - and provided a wonderful range of flavours, with unusual ingredients combined. Do take time to enjoy the seaweed garnishes, which were unexpectedly tasty! We were slightly disappointed by one of the sweet choices - the Border Tart had heavy pastry and harsher flavours compared to the subtle blends of the savoury courses. However this was a very minor flaw in an otherwise superb meal.

We had heard about this little gem from friends in Northampton, then heard about it again and again from anyone we spoke to in Strontian where we were staying. Luckily for us their opening for the season coincided with our 10th wedding anniversary so lunch was booked. It was amazing food, they serve a taster menu so could have anything from 2 to 7 courses. We had 3 and for lunch this was perfect. The menu is decided on the day dependant on what this amazing chef is able to source which makes this very special indeed. The scallops were amazing as were the mussels and if you don’t think you like chicory then think again! My husband loved the local venison which he said ‘melted’ in his mouth.

I am not a fan of taster menus but the choices I made were all superb and the balance of flavors and tastes were perfect. The mussels to start with smoked fish served with seaweed in what was almost a cullen skink type broth was to die for. Next up salmon with a perfectly crisped and salty skin served with a scallop and smoked mussels was devine. loin of lamb followed again perfectly cooked and the fresh mint leaves just complimented it perfectly and I finished with a sweet of locally picked brambles made into various items. Don't be put off by a somewhat unprepossessing exterior when visiting this restaurant. Inside it is beautifully decorated with natural colours and artefacts, all of which make for a relaxing space in which to enjoy the superb taster menu. Although a taster menu, you can have as man y courses as you wish and are not hungry at the end of it! The strength of the cooking lies in the original and interesting combinations of locally sourced ingredients - all of it beautifully presented. There were too many excellent small details to list here but of particular note was the terrine of smoked trout, haddock and slices of potato and the scallops, which were the best my partner had ever tasted. The pannacotta with cherries and chocolate covered Turkish delight squares was absolutely fantastic too. A gripe that has nothing to do with the restaurant but the laws in Scotland now is that one cannot even have one small glass of wine to accompany a meal if you are the driver. Nevertheless, if you are in Lochaline and want to enjoy really well conceived and delicious food, then when it reopens after the winter break in March/April, the Whitehouse is the place to go!

Visited this restaurant whilst having a weeks holiday staying on the very beautiful nearby Ardtornish Estate. We had the taster menu which if I remember correctly was £45 for 5 courses. The menu is short - which I like and seafood led on the night we visited with venison - loin of hind the meat option on the taster menu. The portions are smallish as they are on most taster style menus - but I think the portion sizes were about right over the courses. I certainly did not leave feeling hungry. I particularly liked the seafood courses - really beautifully presented and interesting exciting flavours. They incorporated what I imagine were foraged local sea herbs - I asked the waitress what they were - because I had never tasted them and she brought me samples from the kitchen to taste and explained what they were which I really appreciated. On that note I thought the staff and service were really good - friendly, attentive but not too 'in your face' all the time. Good reasonably priced shortish wine list. Finished off with a few cheeses - which were lovely and hallelujah they were served at room temperature. It really irritates me when restaurants serve cheese straight out the refrigerator. My only criticism was of the loin of hind - it's really delicate meat and was served beautifully blush pink which was great but I found the sauce was too sweet and seemed to entirely over power and mask the flavour of the meat. Pity because everything else was great - but maybe that is just my taste - my partner who is not a big fan of game meats liked it! Definitely would visit here again if up in that part of Scotland.

My husband and I ate at the Whitehouse for lunch. While this is normally the kind of food we would reserve fo dinner, lunch just happened to work best for our plans. There is a new menu daily. At lunch, 2 choices for starter, 2 for entree, and 2 for dessert (they also offer a cheese course) but you can do as many or as few courses as you want. We went for it and had 3 courses each since it was vacation after all but you could certainly eat lighter if you preferred. All ingredients are sourced as locally as possible, and you can tell. For example, I’m not usually a mussels fan but I ate every last one as they were so fresh and sweet. The restaurant itself is set into two smallish but bright rooms—cozy, cheerful, tastefully decorated. Good wine list, including by the glass. Highly recommend whether for lunch or dinner!

I popped in to book in advance and mentioned to the chef that my friend was vegetarian but also had some digestive problems. The chef immediately reassured me he could accommodate us and her dietary requirements...something larger restaurants with lots of food choice aren't always able to do!! When we arrived on Friday night it was warm and welcoming. The chef remembered us and presented my friend with her own handwritten personal menu but said if she didn't like it he could change things. We ordered the 4 course taster and wow! Never had food like it. The mussels were huge and the scallops were absolutely divine. You could taste the freshness and the care that had gone into presenting the best flavours. My friend wasn't sure about the puddings in case they contained gelatin...no problem, chef Mike just whipped her up a personal Bellini pudding on the spot! It was truly amazing, made us feel special but not singled out or excluded and was the perfect end to an amazing holiday. Thank you

This white jewel snuggles in what passes for the heart of Lochaline, just up the hill from the ferry and hard against the compendious village shop and community filling station. It is open from broadly Easter to October and in late summer Mull was serving her Scottish Weather Tasting Menu. Only snow was off, and as the showers blew across the Sound we arrived on foot dripping gently. I was a little surprised that our coats were not taken, nor was there anywhere to hang them, save the backs of our chairs. However my mild irritation evaporated as fast as the steam from clothes hung in front of a good fire, as we were promptly led (as soon as our very necessary reservation had been checked) into the small dining room. I say the dining room, but it is in reality two adjacent rooms with the intervening wall breached by sort of gun ports, giving intriguing glimpses of the other diners and the windows beyond. Whitewashed stone and pastel blues, and a strip wood floor that terminated short of the outside walls in a kind of stone-chip French drain that spoke perhaps to the owners having had at one time more than enough of their own damp problems to overcome. Whatever the reason, the overall effect is delightful, set off by end walls covered in a shoal of plaster mackerel purposefully swimming south. The kitchen is open to one of the dining rooms.

We visited with a recommendation from friends who assured us we wouldn’t be disappointed. Sadly we didn’t book so the evening was out but we waited for lunch the next day for a tasting menu. We were not in anyway disappointed. It was quite simply magical. That’s how the Pouilly Fume 2017 was billed and it suited our taster lunch too perfection. I won’t try to describe the food more than to say it was simply beautiful. My daughter a vegetarian was fed a salad that she billed as the very best she’d ever eaten. I’ve taken pictures here in provided. The service was exemplary and fun not in any way snooty and I’m not saying you should expect it but when your eating fine food like this certainly is it can sometimes be that way. I’m sure we all have experienced such. We caught the ferry from Mull for a birthday lunch and it is hard to see how it could have been bettered. Ingredients fresh and beautiful, the naturally tender left to speak for themselves, with other things (I’m thinking venison shoulder) cooked low and slow until they melt deliciously. Several ideas will be duly stolen when I get home, including the very simple layering of botanic gin, sorbet and spuma that slid down so well when I had no space left. And I don’t often bother to mention coffee, but that was one of the best espressos ever.

The very best of locally sourced ingredients cooked in a simple but sympathetic style and beautifully presented. We decided on a standard starter, main and dessert with a shared cheese board. We have eaten in AA Rosette and Michelin starred restaurants and this was comparable to any. It was my wife's birthday and she really enjoyed her special birthday meal. It is fine dining but we thought the price was very reasonable for what we ate. Highly recommended.

The smallest portions I have ever come across, what a rip off ! My meal could have fitted on a serving spoon . It was embarrassing that I ate it in 3 mouthfuls. If I had not been with my wife l would have taken one look and walked out.As it was she gave me the don't say anything look. What a rip off.

High-end casual fine dining at it's best. Any 4-6 courses from a daily menu of 6+ small-plate courses (broadly 2 meat, 2 fish and desserts). Not cheap, but appropriate for the quality of food and service. Good keenly priced wine list. Can't recommend highly enough for the foodies out there. Will return again and again.

What a surprise to find food of such a high standard in the middle of very beautiful nowhere! I echo previous reviewer's comment as 'just about the best food offered anywhere' and in of all places so far off the beaten track. Excellent friendly service and the best food eaten for many a year. Artistry of a very high order.

So who would know? We sail all round the Western Isles and revisit this restaurant after several years. Food has changed and for the better. Emphasis on fresh local food is a good start. Add in a limited menu if two starters, two mains and two desserts with optional cheese course. You can have 3,4,5,6, courses and priced accordingly.Very good cooking and attractive modern style presentation with decor of garden edible flowers.Good wines, beers etc at competitive prices. Friendly efficient service.Frequented mainly by sailing types like us.

This was the second time that we had been this year for their taster menu and it was just outstanding. The plates are a work of art and they taste just as good. This is by far the best restaurant in the area with fantastic friendly staff.

We made a special trip from Oban to have dinner here since we enjoyed a superb meal here last year. But upon our return we found that the menu has now been replaced by a taster menu. 4 starter-like portions for £45 a head or 6 for £65.Now I am not a lover of the taster menus- too many flavours crammed into a dinner and not really letting the ingredients do the talking. I am all for accomplished cooking but cramming 10 to 12 different ingredients onto 1 plate is too excessive for me. We will not return to the Whitehouse if the taster menu is going to be a regular feature. Too pricey and too pretentious and not exceptional.

Wow, what a great little place to eat. The quality of the food is superb. I'm no food critic by any means but this place clearly is a cut above. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming and the kitchen banter is relaxed with no yelling I noticed. Price wise, well you get what you pay for. We had the 4 courses, 2 starters and 2 mains. I had a glass of house red and my wife house white. There's also an appetiser course. Total bill £112. Worth every penny. A cheery wave 'bye from the chef and excellent service. All in all a lovely night out. Looking forward to going back on our next trip to the area.

My wife and I had previously eaten here on a cycling holiday and thought it was very good but this time we sailed into the new marina and were delighted to have been able to book a table for that evening. All four of us eat out a lot and all 4 of us that ought that this was one of the best meals we had ever had. The menu had changed dramatically from previously and is now a form of tasting menu offering a minimum of 4 courses with additional amuse bouches. Although the number of choices was fairly limited, each one was crafted so carefully with numerous locally sourced ingredients. They all looked great on the plate and tasted even better. The wine list was extensive and contained some very reasonably priced wines and we were able to enjoy an excellent white burgundy, a cotes du rhone and a monbazillac, none of which were over-priced. The service was great, friendly and relaxed and very understated. We all agreed that we had eaten in several restaurants with Michelin stars that were inferior to the Whitehouse. Get there quickly before it becomes too crowded...you won't regret it

We made the trip from Kilberry via Mull especially to visit The Whitehouse, following the reading of glowing reviews. Although the atmosphere could have been improved by the presence of more diners, the set menu could not easily have been improved upon. The service was great, as was the value for money. This is a wonderful place to dine in simple unpretentious surroundings and very much worth the journey to beautiful Lochaline. We will make the journey again before summer's out.

I am not usually a fan of fine dining, as I usually find the atmosphere intimidating and I leave hungry. However, the Whitehouse has a very informal feel to it, and as long as you follow the waitress recommendations of having at least four courses, you get enough to eat. The taster menu means you don't have to make many choices, you just have a little of everything on your plate. A good idea for someone like me who likes most things, but a fussy eater would maybe struggle. The quality of the cuisine was truly exceptional. I usually find beautifully presented food a bit pretentious, but as it was tasty and actually filled me up, even I was impressed. The waitress was very helpful and made sure we knew what was on our plate each time, which we appreciated. One of the most expensive meals I have had, but also one of the best.

We stayed at Lochaline for 3 nights and perhaps eccentrically booked to eat at 'The Whitehouse' each night given that the food was from the same menu each night. However, we had 3 different 'the same' meals - each was unique and highly enjoyable. You could have either a four course or a six course meal (choosing from 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 puddings) - the portion sizes were not huge but 4 courses was a good quantity for us. High spots of the menu were salt and pepper squid on a squid ink risotto, Minch beach (the fish main) with Hake, an oyster and scallops and some of the most flavoursome beef in the form of steak with a braised shin 'bolognese'. All food looked attractive and was seasoned with foraged flowers and other vegetation. Wine was also excellent - high spots from a spanish organic producer. Our waitress (all 3 nights) was lovely - friendly, helpful and efficient, big thanks to Mike the chef for his helpful advice about sourcing seafood to take to inland relatives

Coming from London with its myriad choices for dining, I wasn't expecting much. From the outside, this place looks like a dive. Peering in, there's nothing special about the furniture or layout. But do not be fooled! The tasting menu, full of fresh ingredients placed lovingly on each plate, was an absolute delight. I can't choose a favourite dish - they were all delicious. Despite being the only table booked for the night, we had no trouble enjoying a meal which has been one of the best I've ever had.

We arrived in Lochaline at the start of a diving trip and myself and a clubmate went round to The Whitehouse to see if we could get an early dinner at 18:20. Inside, the restaurant was empty and someone was lighting the candles on the tables. We went in and asked if we could have a table for two so she went through to the kitchen, came out and said "no". Not "sorry but we are fully booked", "sorry but we don't have a free table until midnight", "we can only offer you a table if you are finished by 8", etc., etc. Just "no". It was the first time I could not get a table somewhere where they didn't even bother to give an explanation why. I have eaten there before and I remember the food to be nice and I don't remember any issues with the service, so it must have been unremarkable at worst. Maybe the service has gone downhill since ... I don't think I'll try again!

My daughter and I had been told by our b&b hostess that we should try the Whitehouse. We were not disappointed, we chose the full 6 course taster menu - which with little extra additions turned into 9 courses, every single course a piece of art which tasted wonderfully. My fave was the Chook apple - yummy and the toasted brioche just complemented the pate and jelly perfectly. We had a nice bottle of organic bubbly to go with the meal. Perfect. We can not wait to be back, this was some of the best food we have had, and the link to the local producers and the locality was perfect. The waitress was a lovely lady who managed to present the dishes perfectly and still made you feel in a relaxed atmosphere.

We were expecting a lovely meal focused on top quality local ingredients, but not the joy of the beauty of the food as well as its flavour! We also loved the innovative wine list and service was excellent too. The taster menu followed by a shared cheese plate was just right so we could all sample the full range of dishes. We loved the chef's inventiveness, the pairing of elements within dishes and the use of edible flowers.

I had an amazing meal here. For 2017 they have introduced a gastronomic menu. You can have four courses for £40 or six for £60. I had the six consisting of two starters, two mains and two desserts. With a spritzer and a glass of house red to drink my bill came to £71 which for the quality of the meal I thought was fabulous value. It is well worth the long journey to Lochaline to sample this restaurant. The food is all locally sourced and so very fresh either from the sea outside the door or the local Estates. The food is also very inventive but not wackily so. The most amazing dish I had was described as 'Hens liver parfait, granny smith apple and shallot jam, shaved cured stag, roasted hazelnuts and walnuts'. The amazing thing about this delicious dish was the 'apple' which was a fake apple made out of some sort of granny smith 'jelly', but it looked like an apple and it was stuffed with the hens liver parfait, but there were no signs of a join or any seams as to how the apple mould was put together. I enjoyed every course and they were more than nouveau 'taster' like courses. Being really pernickety the odd course suffered from being perhaps a tad 'too clever'. The Morvern smoked haddock could have done without one of the ingredients - either the 'sand' or the 'powdered bladderwrack' - I was unsure which was which, but the relevant ingredient seemed to add nothing to the dish and just clogged my mouth up. My only other very minor quibble was that my heather infused rump of black faced lamb needed a steak knife to cut into it because of sinews I could not cut. This did not detract from the taste. I cannot wait to return when I next visit Lochaline. It would even be worth the 40 odd mile journey from Fort William to come here for dinner. Really excellent.

We're just back from an evening at The Whitehouse, having enjoyed one of the best meals out we've ever had. They've gone for a taster menu this season, but don't expect tiny portions! We opted for the 6-course version (which turned into 8 with the appetiser and the sorbet), and it was difficult to rank one dish above another. The service was friendly and relaxed, but please don't read that as a euphemism for slow - the timing between courses was spot on. The presentation was exquisite, and every dish was inventive without being pretentious, some with really subtle flavours and some that were just taste explosions. If you're in the area, don't miss out. In fact, if you're not in the area, find some accommodation right now! We're off to bed now, to groan quietly and to dream of the return visit.

Fabulous evening meal at The White House. It was the last evening of our stay at the Ardtornish estate where there is very little around in the way of pubs or restaurants so this is a little jewel. The restaurant now offers a taster menu of which we chose the reasonably priced 4 courses although this was in fact a 5 course one as they give you a complimentary course to try. Each course was bursting with flavours and colours. Each bite was a revelation to the taste buds ! Whilst we won't be returning to this part of the world again we most certainly will remember our visit here. A must do if you're ever there
