14/05/2019: We meet up with friends from time to time, and the Crown was chosen to do so. After an absence of some three years, this charming, well-established gastropub can be a little tricky to find, as the roads around Abergavenny are not very well signed, especially using the Old Hereford Road with its confusing road closure signs. Any road up, it's well worth the effort, to find the Crown in its outstandingly beautiful valley. We were warmly greeted by Cherrie who has owned the Crown for more than 15 years, and shown to a table adjacent to the interesting bar area. As we pored over the freshly prepared daily menu, another friend arrived and joined us, with Cherrie quickly reorganizing seating. Our shared starter of King Prawn salad was outstanding, with one guest enjoying garlic mushrooms. Mains were a Chef's chicken, scampi, beef rare with bubble and squeak, and my superb Italian inspired fish stew. All good. A couple of Stowford pressed ciders, NZ Savcab, and a pint of probably the best ale in the world, Bass, washed down the very good food. We noticed as we were leaving an hour later, that the Crown was quickly filling, with every table taken, so it's worth booking in advance. Bill for five of us with starters, mains, puddings and drinks came to a very reasonable £140! You do the maths.
21/04/2019: had a group of 4 visit and at first we thought this might not be for us as its very much country pub but it was friendly comfortable and the food was just wonderful . the steak so tender and cooked to perfection. Great evening .
