Hate to be the bad guy but have to say it’s a very disappointing Sunday roast. Gravy is bland. Yorkshire pudding, beef and potato unbelievably dry :( . Don’t know how long they have been left in the oven to be this dry. If they were actually kept in oven to stay hot, curious when it’s served it’s barely warm. Nice interior and friendly staff. It’s just food is giving me Sunday depression. Only good thing I could think about is that the portion is good. So you won’t be both depressed and hungry.

Lovely staff and setting. But food incredibly disappointing. Couldn’t eat the veggies as they were so hard and undercooked. Food was only just warm. have since had an lovely apology from the Manager and offer of a meal for four. So I have increased rating and hope to enjoy our meal when we go back. Linda Woodcock

I love this pub, great food and fab people. I *do* wish they’d think again very hard about the garden. It was a beautiful English pub garden for years and got the late evening sun in the summer. In the pandemic or just after someone ripped out all the trees (maybe they were a bit big, so maybe fair) and put up a massive tent thing and a load of nasty palm trees that don’t suit the pub or the area and are not well cared for so look poor. There is bare earth under the tent and it looks awful. No more evening sun. Pretty pretty please, put it back how it was and stick to lovely English plants and parasols? It’s the only thing stopping me calling this my favourite pub in St Albans!

We booked on the website for a Christmas lunch. We arrived and was told they don't do it on a sunday, which is not stated anywhere on the website. We even called up a few days before the booking and they did not mention that we couldnt get the christmas menu. We spoke to the manager and he was very abrupt and unsympathetic, bordering on rude. The female server we had was lovely. We ordered a roast which was disappointing. It looked great, but the vegetables and potatoes were rock hard and flavourless. Won't be going back again.

4.5 stars. I don't know how. Maybe a previous management? We came in for a drink and then maybe some food. We were served by a team of very young people with, it seems, no sense of guidance. They all seem too preoccupied with chatting amongst themselves and their friends than serving customers. We gave it the benefit of the doubt and after seeing some of the food coming out we decided to stay for some food. This was a mistake. Although it looked very good, well done to the chef for making it look nice, it was bland and empty. When I spoke to my server after too long a wait for a check back they suggested some spicy sauce on it. The garden is the big draw for this place, in the summer I can imagine that it will be very busy. But the way things are going this will disappear into the realm of pubs that cater for the 20's. We visited a while ago and was very happy, the name cropped up again recently so we tried it again with new people. It's sad to say that the heart and soul of the place is not there. Sad.

I've been coming to this pub for more than 10 years and have never been disappointed. I've seen it change hands multiple times and even then the quality of service, the food and drinks hadn't dropped in it's standards. Having mostly come for drinks with mates, I can confidently say this is a great local pub to socialise come rain or shine with plenty of room both indoor and outdoors. Whilst it still has that traditional pub look and feel, it's not dark and dingy like a lot of other pubs in the local vicinity. It retains a classy look and feel while maintaining the authenticity of a traditional British pub. They have also invested heavily into their beer garden which is the best thing they did as it's much more inviting than it used to be and great even when raining due to having plenty of covered space. The selection of drinks never disappoints and the staff are always friendly and have excellent banter. The food really takes it up a notch for pub grub as they have all the classics, fish and chips, burgers, pies, and a few other unique dishes too all made to an exceptional standard. I honestly couldn't recommend this pub enough and I'm hoping this review will support The White Lion in what is a turbulent time for the hospitality sector where many businesses are struggling to stay afloat. Even with all the other choices of pub in St Albans, I find myself gravitating towards White Lion for the reasons above. You can't go wrong!

First time in since the new landlords were installed a few months ago and have to say a great first impression. Service was quick (on a busy Friday night too), staff were cheerful and helpful and the food (ranging from a very nice piece of fish to a jackfruit burger to a chicken burger) was all well cooked and went down very well. The beer selection is decent too (two bitters on tap plus a good selection of ales and even lucky saint on tap). All in all, really nice to see the white lion re emerge after the unpleasant actions of the brewery chain after COVID. Will be going again!

We used to be regulars of this pub and ate here often. We hadn’t been for a while and took family here while were visiting from abroad, we weren’t told there were limited items left on the menu (on a Friday night!!) until we ordered which was disappointing. No amazing specials and the chef has defiantly changed because the food has been average. There was a huge pile of rubbish in the corner also which we were facing and something rather off putting was seeing one of the waitresses put a load of cutlery into a bowl then add boiling water and vinegar in-front of us!? We were quite embarrassed having brought family here as it was an average experience. Real shame that another great pub has lost it’s spark.

We booked the first table available on Sunday lunch as we had other arrangements later. We both ordered the beef. Now I’m quite a fussy eater and the beef was way to pink for my liking, my partner who isn’t fussy said it would have been to pink for her to. Her piece of beef was pretty bad, it was mainly fat and hardly any actual meat. The vegetables were solid, and the cauliflower cheese was also hard. The cheese sauce had gone all over other food items and all over the plate. The staff after being told did try to reconcile. They bought a small plate of beef to the table that had been cooked more thoroughly. Despite eating only the roast potatoes (which were good by the way) we still were asked to pay infull for both meals, but had the 2 soft drinks we had ordered removed from the bill. The only reason we even went here was due to research stating it was one of the best roast dinners in stalbans . This is not true. However the staff were attentive , the location is lovely, but they need to really work on Sunday lunch !

It serves a wide range of real ales including Woodford Wherry as a regular. It has an excellent bar menu with quirky snacks such as black pudding scotch eggs or chicken wings. If you want something more substantial we recommend the crab cakes or one of their pies. All are good value, tasty and satisfying. Decor is great, light and airy with an area more suited to the drinkers and the other for the diners. Great range of beers, ciders and lagers catering for all needs. The menu is small but should be something to tempt the taste buds of all. Personally I prefer to see a menu like this as there is a better chance that the food has been prepared and cooked on the premises and not undergone "ding" technology. We had chicken three ways which was a hit. Nicely presented with good flavours. Saw other meals come up, all looked great. The lads behind the bar were friendly and helpful. Will be back again soon

A couple of mates and I tried it out on a Monday night. Only three if the six mains were available so two of us opted for the snacking menu. It was just so-so... The crab didn't come with the promised crusty white bread but a horrid nap instead, the bubble and squeak scotch egg was under seasoned, but the piccalilli was great and punchy. We were really looking forward to it but left feeling pretty underwhelmed. It may have been a Monday night thing but I feel if you're paying the same prices, you should expect the menu to be on offer and the quality to be the same.

As noted on other post, quantity not huge but quality more than made up for it. Left room for dessert anyway. Beer was good too.

We popped in to check out the refurb and booked a table for the following Sunday for lunch. Another friend had mentioned that the portions were not huge but that suited me, for one I finished my plate

Well what a surprise this place is! Just passing and thought we would pop in as we had heard they had had a refit! We really felt welcome by the young lady behind the bar. She showed us to a table and asked if we needed anything. She had a good knowledge of the menu, drinks and was very happy to answer our questions. The food was amazing .. fresh .. tasty and loads! I could not recommended this pub enough. It is so beautiful inside, clean and very modern. There is a really nice atmosphere in here.. music not too loud but enough to enjoy but still be able to talk. I would definitely recommend you book if you won't to eat as it was getting busy as we were leaving. Definitely try the pies!

The people at this pub have done a great job of creating a cosy and warm place to eat, drink and chill. Love the snacking menu as I like to try lots of different things and the range of vodka, gins and wine will keep me coming back! Boyfriend is also happy as they have so many beers to choose from. Service is great, relaxed and attentive and was made to feel really welcome.Thank you!

Hidden away in the back streets of St Albans, you'll find a pub that transports guests back to the Victorian era. Think nooks, crannies, and cozy corners, a roaring real fire, and a great pint of real ale - plus the lost commodity of good Old Fashioned service. The Garibaldi is a Fuller's pub that serves real ales. Their menu is small but perfectly formed, offering traditional pub classics and delicious daily specials. Sunday roasts and regular curry nights are the highlights of the week for many. If you visit, make sure to arrive nice and early to guarantee yourself a table. With regular guest ales to complement a great range of Fuller's favorites, The Garibaldi is a beer lover's dream pub. They also have a lovely family garden, perfect for al fresco drinks or a relaxed meal with your loved ones during the blissful summer months. Fresh food, fresh beer, and fresh air await you at The Garibaldi! 🍻🌞

The Skew Bridge is a great asset to Harpenden, centrally located next to the Common, and popular with the locals. I have been to several enjoyable social gatherings there and the landlords go to a lot of trouble to make sure everyone’s needs are met. They are particularly hot on making sure that any customers with special dietary requirements are specifically catered for. Unusually for a pub they allow it to be used during the day for local activities such as a mother and baby group, IT courses and discussion groups, making it a valuable community space.

We went for a Sunday roast and was not disappointed, crispy roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, roast parsnips and carrots, Yorkshire pud and delicious lamb. Definitely one of the best roast in St Albans. We will be back. Thank you, Charlotte and your team. Betty
