So to start I’d like to say what a great job the staff did and how well presented they were in there manners towards us and uniform etc. The food was absolutely outstanding, we had the black pudding scotch egg which was Devine with a perfect egg inside.Four of us had the fillet steak… to put it simply I haven’t ever had a steak quite like this, I had mine rare and it was absolutely perfect right the way through, the accompanying sauce was perfectly salty to complement the steak and the potato Dauphinois was the perfect side to tie it all together. The desserts were amazing! The white chocolate and baileys cheesecake was quite simply the best I’ve ever had and I’m a big fan of cheesecake. The overall atmosphere was nice and quiet perfect for a formal fine dining experience, staff were very friendly and facilities were clean and tidy. Jacob did an excellent job with wine table service, offering us a bit of the wine to taste before pouring a perfect measure in our glasses. The only pointers I could give them is that you could possibly show your staff to pour wine with the butt of the bottle and twist as they leave the glass to avoid drips on the table but that’s just me being fussy because everything was so perfect! The only bite for us was that we requested a longer wait between starters and mains but felt it was still a bit too quick! Other than that what an amazing venue with amazing food and equally amazing staff! This place deserves everyone’s visit! Prices are very well and truly justified!

Never had Sunday lunch here and what with the dreaded lock down looming we will miss eating out here for a while so decided to try it, after all, every time we visit in the evenings everything is fabulous. Social distancing and rules strictly adhered to and it wasn’t very busy so we had one of the rooms to ourselves.A larger menu than we actually expected for a Sunday as well as the traditional choice of roasts. We both had a starter, followed by roast chicken, which was lovely and came with mashed potato, roast potatoes, a selection of vegetables with a large Yorkshire pudding and gravy.Such a shame that restaurants are having to close yet again...we look forward to returning as soon as it is able o re open.

We came here as a party of 5 for a birthday/graduation meal.We wanted a laid back atmosphere but with brilliant food.I’d driven past this place for years, and then finally made the jump to try it after a recommendation.Wow definitely disappointed, even during the time after lockdown with a smaller menu the selection was still vast. Each person had a starter and main, but we were to stuffed for pudding.Be careful if you or anyone in your party is taller than 5’7, as the beams are quite low.

My friend and I dined here last night. It’s the first time that we’ve dined out since the 10pm closing time was instated. The food was absolutely delicious - one of the best meals I’ve had in a very long time (and I made the most of the ‘Eat out to help out’ campaign in the summer!) I had the white onion, cider and cheddar soup to start, my friend had the baked brie and parma ham. We both had the rump of lamb for our mains, which was a sizeable portion and cooked to perfection for us (juicy and pink but not oozing blood); we had an extra portion of potato dauphinois (a steal at £2.50!) The mains also came with an individual dish of perfectly cooked al dente vegetables each. For dessert I had the cheese board and my friend had the cheesecake. We had two bottles of the Shiraz and the bill still came in at under £100.The tables were spaced out well, the staff adhered to the wearing of face masks, and there was sanitiser for use. All common practice these days but still there feels like there is a degree of difference in how well places manage this; The White Bear, in my opinion, is one of the better places. Our waiter, Jacob, was an absolute delight; friendly and attentive without being overbearing. There were a few tears from us - it’d been a long, hard week - but Jacob discretely kept his distance while still being visible had we wanted anything else from him. Around 9.30pm the lady who appeared to be in charge, possibly the owner, checked whether we wanted any more drinks before they closed, and just before 10pm brought us the cap for the wine so that we could take it with us.All-in-all a delightful evening. There was nothing that could be improved upon and I’m sure we’ll be back again relatively soon. Thank you all at The White Bear.

Had an excellent meal at The White Bear. We had the black pudding scotch egg and the popcorn shrimp to start, belly pork and blade of beef for mains, sticky toffee pudding and chocolate orange bread and butter pudding. Came here as our first meal post lockdown, and was not disappointed. Upon entry we noticed the views from the patio seating area, which must be some of the best scenery in Derbyshire! We were greeted at the door by some splendid staff members who shown us to our table and was told the soup of the day and specials. I decided to go for the scotch egg to start (which was the best I have ever had by a country mile) and the rump of lamb for my main course. The lamb was cooked to absolute perfection, I could’ve cut it with a spoon! It was melt in the mouth and the sauce was sensational! My partner had the tiger prawns to start with chilli sauce and the fillet steak with bacon and Stilton cheese as a main course. Again, my partner said was cooked to perfection and was clearly very impressed with how fast it was gone! We was both very full following our main course but could not say no to the homemade chocolate and hazelnut parfait. This was the perfect end to our meal. We will be returning very soon, and enjoyed every moment.

This is an amazing place. Tucked in at the side of the road partially hidden by being on lower ground, Called in about 4 years ago for a pint after a long meeting in Clay Cross. Owned and run by a family it immediately brought to mind many of the semi rural restaurants in France. The building itself is really attractive and so it wasn't long before we went for a meal which was to be the first of many. Great creative food, faultless service makes for a special occasion. It could be so very easy to become part of the family.

Booked this restaurant for my mum's 90th birthday. As we pulled up my heart sank... what have I booked, it looked a little scruffy from the outside.Though we loved the parsley (owners might know what I mean by that, my cousin and I marvelled at how healthy it looked compared to what we grow at home.) Inside is a different story the old part of the bar is quaint with a log burner and there are newer bits to suit those that like things a bit well newer. We opted for a table by the log burner. Now I am a pretty harsh restaurant critic as you will see from some of my other reviews but this I have to rate as excellent. The food was superb, beautifully cooked, good quality ingredients and the sauces were excellent. All the food was well presented and served piping hot (makes such a change I am fed up with cold food being served elsewhere.) Two of our group started with the prawns - they were described as succulent and tasty, they must have been because no one offered to let me try one! I had the squid (I am a bit of a squid fan) and well squid is squid unless its in a stew but these were beautifully done, not greasy just lovely, tender and went down very well! Our fourth member had the black pudding scotch eggs - again I was not allowed a taste.. but he said they were excellent the yolks were perfectly cooked just runny enough to be considered "master chef." Moving on to the mains; two of us had rack of lamb in a red wine sauce - omg - tender, perfectly cooked pink, melt in your mouth lamby cream dream! My friend has a small appetite due to ill health if she hadn't been sitting too far away I would have whipped what she left! Though I haven't seen her eat so much in ages. My mum had the pork belly with sticky onion sauce well I don't think I have seen her clear a plate that quick in years! I'll come back to mum's comments. The last member of the group, Mr Grumpy, had the chicken stuffed with haggis in a whisky sauce - he loved it and trust me that is going some for him to make a good comment, he said he found the sauce a bit rich but he was in a mood so when he went outside (my instruction to him to go out and find a better mood LOL) I tried the sauce and it was excellent not too rich, he was lucky to find anything left on his plate when he came back in! Moving on .. now I don't really eat desserts but I did and had the bread and butter pudding with custard - well ring the bells of celebration it was perfect! Light, not sweet sludge like most places but delicately sweetened and not over heavy in any taste, even the custard was in my view perfect, again not over sugared. Mum had the cheesecake - white chocolate and baileys I think - she loved it. Oh I nearly forgot the home made bread with a bottle of olive oil on the table for dipping - lovely - now if there had been a pot of parmesan for me to mix with the olive oil as well I would have been in seven heaven! Too many business trips to the States I am afraid - good bread, oil, herbs and parmesan yum!Service was for me just right, it was friendly with interesting short conversations not the usual couldn't really care service platitudes. I got the feeling that there was a genuine appreciation to hear feedback there and then. The speed of service in my opinion was just right, I did not feel rushed neither did I feel slowly left too long! I had time to savour the food without seeing a rushing head popping up and down and the wait between courses gave me time to enjoy what I had just eaten, rest a bit and then be delighted to receive the next course. How this team turn out such excellent food I have no idea - very skilled and with a fine taste themselves I guess. As I previously said today was my mum's 90th birthday and she may be an old lady but as a lady who was the most fabulous cook all her life until the last 10 or so years it was always hard to find a meal that met our family standards. Today she said "I think that is the best meal I have had in 30+ years." That is a massive compliment, trust me! As a family we have eaten across the world at some of the most prestigious restaurants in the world but for where this place is and what it is I think its absolutely brilliant. Oh I nearly forgot - I am a great eavesdropper and on the table next to us who came in pretty late for lunch the plaice (I think) in lobster and prawn sauce was described as "to die for" and the Venison described as bloody good. I couldn't hear any comment from the roast chicken lady she was out of ear shot other than hearing her fret about calories!Thank you. We will deff be back and I am hoping sooner than later! Lent diet has gone out the window with a fantastic bang! Heck I am not religious so who cares about Lent thank you team White Bear for helping me break it! Now it wouldn't be me if I didn't find something to grouch about but the only thing I can find is that it was a bit cold as all old buildings are! Perhaps stick the fires on earlier? Sorry! What more to say! From a grouching person who likes to review everything from the Mandarin Oriental on the banks of the Chao Phraya to a greasy spoon in Chesterfield - well done totally recommend you.

Ate here for the first time last night. The whole experience was fantastic, the greeting we received and the service was second to none and the food, well it was absolutely gorgeous. This is a beautiful, very relaxed atmospheric little gem.

Since this is one of our favourite places to eat, our friends were keen to try it...and they were not disappointed. Everything was excellent. We had the French onion soup, salted squid and Brie for starters. For the main; duck breast, steaks and the cod, only 2 managed a pud!

We visited on a Saturday evening for a Mother’s Day Treat and booked in advance. We had tempura prawns to begin with and then Seabass, Cod and Steak for our mains. They were all delicious and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We loved the cosy feel to the pub and would definitely come back. I would say that the outside of the pub does not do the pub justice at all as it is lovely inside!

Visited here on numerous occasions and keep forgetting to review this gem of a restaurant. We love the food and service at this family run establishment. Having tried a number of starters, main and deserts I would say you are safe to try anything you fancy on the blackboard menu.

Very warm welcome.....lovely rustic restaurant, delicious food and great service. I always have the duck breast with peas and panchetta when we visited previously and had the same again...never disappoints. Hubby had the fillet steak which he thoroughly enjoyed. Well worth paying that bit extra for!

My partner and friend went to the restaurant last night 13/10/17. It s the first time we d been for a year as we recently moved away. As soon as we walked in we were welcomed as tho we’d been there last week, not only did the host remember us but remembered what drinks we had previously, a very welcoming personal touch thank you. The food was INCREDIBLE, we had the Brie starter, I had the Pork Belly, and my partner the Monkfish special for main, beautifully presented, and we both agreed we d order the same again. Thank you for a lovely evening. Highly recommend anyone to go and experience the hospitality and delightful food.

Having eaten here twice in the evening off the a la Carte menu and been happy with the food, I was extremely disappointed with their Sun lunch. For £12.50 I had a tiny chicken portion, 3 roast potatoes (no mash or new potatoes), some soggy stuffing and a bit of veg! Not a Yorkshire pud in sight. All very bland and rather boring. When I mentioned this to our waitress (older lady in charge) she was very dismissive and non apologetic. Just said we should have ordered off the other menu! That's not really the point of the right attitude. It was poor value for money. As we were still hungry we decided to have a dessert. I had the chocolate parfait at £5.50 which came with no cream or ice cream so I asked if I could have some ice cream with it - to be then charged an extra £1.25 for 1 scoop of cheap vanilla ice cream! When the waitress was challenged as to why someone in the restaurant had had cheesecake and theirs came with ice cream, she just said that the parfait was expensive to make! What?! We were not given any money off the bill nor a free tea or coffee! Shocking customer service. I WILL NOT BE RETURNING AND SPENDING MY MONEY THERE AGAIN.

Used to go here a lot but haven't been in over a decade until a recent Sunday lunch. Lovely roast dinner. However, only a few prawns on starter dish and one piece of focaccia bread way ahead of soup arriving. Seems a bit tired. Lovely staff but dated/tired decor & furnishings in places. Outside could be much nicer too with that wonderful view. Lots of cleaning products visible on a shelf near chalk board (but I prefer to get away from seeing those when I dine out!). Could've done with some music and a bit of character (in terms of makeover) to add to to the charm of what could be a great pub if modernised slightly while retaining character features.

Dined here with friends on a Saturday evening for dinner. Excellent food with enthusiastic service. Tempura prawns with sweet chilli perfect as was my wife's baked Brie wrapped in Parma ham. Homemade Foccacia very good quality. My duck breast was tasty, cooked really well, pink inside with crispy skin. Excellent jus. Vegetables al dente. All very tasty. In the South East, this meal would have been at least 25% more expensive. Was not expecting to find this place just off the main road. Beautiful views to boot. Highly recommended.

Currently on a motorcycle holiday making our way up to Scotland. Stopped en route near our first night's hotel at this quaint little gastro pub as I had seen other reviews when I did a Trip Advisor search. We didn't book in advance, but thankfully they were able to squeeze the 6 of us in ( would highly recommend booking to be certain you will get a table). The ambiance is just lovely, lots of original features, very authentic decor - would be great for a date night! Despite being soaking wet (and bikers!) we were given a warm welcome. We were cold and hungry and anything hot would have made us happy, but the food was just incredible. They have a very talented and creative chef. Between us we had 12 dishes and not one moan or whinge from anybody. I had baked brie wrapped in Parma ham, followed by the chicken stuffed with haggis in a whisky sauce - both were sublime. If it had been a nicer day we would have sat outside, as the views are stunning. Ample parking, easy to find, will definitely make return visit whenever we are in or near the Peak District.

A group of 4 of us came for a meal and some drinks, after being seated and the bar staff being snotty, we looked at the menu and nearly passed out at the prices! When we said 'we're sorry but we're going to go elsewhere' we didn't expect the staff to be happy, but they were extremely rude, also one of the staff said I'll tell the chef, tell him what we hadn't ordered anything! All in all, if you want overpriced food, rude staff, and an overrated establishment, this is the place to be!

This is the first time we have visited The White Bear, and very pleased we did! The exterior of the building doesn't look dramatically appealing, but inside it is a rather quaint little place. The lady who served us was really lovely, and was very attentive. The food; perfect! We had starters and mains, both were fantastic - the chef knew how to cook a fillet steak to perfection! Glad we found The White Bear, will definitely return in the future!

Please DO NOT judge from the outside! What a fantastic little pub/restaurant!.Rustic decor, lovely calm ambiance quite quirky really.Lovely friendly staff. We were greeted on arrival by the landlady, friendly and polite .Great choice of wines.Amazing choice of food venison, steak, lamb, salmon etc.. all cooked in a delectable way so difficult to choose!!.We had a calamari as starters and was offered a choice of bread ( rosemary and basil or cherry tomato) we opted for the rosemary and basil which was very nice.Main course. My husband chose the venison.I chose the fillet steak cooked in port with stilton and wrapped in bacon. We both were given seasonal vegetables on a side dish which were included. And also a side dish of dauphanese potato with the steak. The meats were both cooked to perfection ( medium rare) beautiful and tender. The whole experience created a wonderful plesent evening. This is our only day off being in the profession also ( of a similar nature)So it's imperative we enjoy our dining experience. We shall definatly return! And shall highly recommend. Thank you to all staff.

As a party of seven of us we're leaving the pub, I made a comment to one of the waiting staff that the meal was not good and we would not be returning for second helpings. As we arrived home my husbands mobile was ringing. He passed his mobile to me to answer. It was the White Bear. The chef asked me why I had made the complaint. I proceeded to tell him------the venison tasteless -----the monkfish tough-----the steak not cooked to requirement ( we sent the steak back but they brought it back and said there was nothing wrong with it!!!!!! The chef then said to me "Obviously this is not your type of pub". To which I said, " Obviously not", and switched the phone off!!

The White Bear is a real find. This was our first visit here. We had a really warm welcome. The menu and specials were fully explained and whilst we sat in the bar area with our drinks our order was taken. We had the lamb kleftika and the salmon and monkfish. The surroundings are so lovely and quaint but mind your head if you're on the tall side. We could sit were we wanted (we had an early booking) so we plumped for the table next to the gorgeous log burner - so cosy. The food was absolutely delicious, packed full of flavour, piping hot and nicely presented. Portion sizes were excellent. The puds were also well presented and tasty. We felt really comfortable, unrushed and well fed. We shall return!

This pub looks very ordinary from the outside but the inside is homely and the food is fresh, well cooked, tasty and served hot. Strangely the menu is on a blackboard which isn't obvious when you first walk in. You need to book and it's better to be seated in the bar area which is cosier and more atmospheric than the very bright annex/extension. Wine by the glass was good, food couldn't be faulted, albeit slightly slow in coming out from the kitchen, but well worth the wait. Great meal for 2 was approx £65, we shared dessert, definitely worth a visit.

Me and my husband go here regularly...probably once a month...For a night out...meal and plenty of drinks!!!! The service is always fantastic...and I've experienced shocking service and been a waitress myself!!! I love the blackboard menu and have sampled a large selection from it...and we have never had a bad meal....It is always delicious ....The wine is gorgeous and a great selection!!! I think it is very unfair to call this 'just pub grub'.....It is far more than that...If you want 'just pub grub' you can go to a brewers fayre or any other chain establishment....For which there is a large marked difference!!!!! Try the Greyhound down the road....but if you don't mind...I won't!!!! I have read some of the negative reviews and find them hard to swallow....especially when the grammar and spelling is especially bad...I like that the dessert menu is small and succinct....It makes choosing easier....and the chocolate & orange bread & butter pudding is to die for!!!! This is a great restaurant or 'gastro pub'....I don't care what they call it.....The food is delicious...The service and hospitality fantastic...and we shall definitely be going again.....soon!!!!!!!!!!

Our family group of 8, went for Sunday lunch, to celebrate my mother's 80th birthday at The White Bear - somewhere we have been to many times before. The food was excellent (as usual) and without exception, everyone in our party enjoyed what they had - Pork belly x3, Rack of Lamb x2, Fish, Turkey & 1 other.Having requested a dairy-free meal when we booked, it was reassuring to find that the staff were careful to identify who in the party required that option. The relatively recent addition of some more comfortable dining chairs is a very welcome change from the previously un-padded ones they had before.
