Collected food from here a few times. Breakfast rolls and lunches have been great! Definitely been missing them while they are closed during this lockdown!! Hopefully they will be open soon

Booked for breakfast , a wonderful experience,, Well cooked and well presented cooked breakfast ,, a nice idea that you can choose from a "select your own" 5 or 7 pieces. We both had clean plates !!! Plenty of covid restrictions in place .

Well done for improvising and doing the takeaway breakfast, they are amazing and well worth the money. Keep up.the good work

As one half of 2 couples who regularly meet for lunch and like to try new places, we read good comments about this cafe. The staff were pleasant and the service efficient but the choices are very very limited. It was busy with locals, possibly regulars, as there is no competition in the area. Be prepared to have cash as they don’t accept cards (which we discovered after we had eaten). Luckily there is a cash machine in the High Street.

I nipped into the wheelhouse cafe with my young family the other day, having never visited before. I was extremely impressed with the quality and price of the food. There was a really nice family atmosphere, we felt welcomed by the staff, despite my noisy offspring! Nice and bright interior and the chef had some excellent banter to boot! Can't be beaten if you are in the area and are looking for a quality and relaxing meal.

Lovely halloumi salad wrap bursting with fresh crunchy salad and a wee slice of homemade Malteser slice. All with a latte and a friendly welcome. Love this cafe.

Popped in for a coffee and a blackpudding roll. Staff are extremely friendly and place has a nice atmosphere. I was surprised and disappointed only to get one small slice of blackpudding in my roll. This made it poor value with too much roll and not enough filling. Most cafes offer 2 slices.

When I say that this is just the right kind of cafe for the stalwart working class residents, I say it with respect. My Dad was a Miner and, once, Newtongrange Pit employed many of them. And, even though it has now closed, this small town is well worth stopping in, for a well- 'pit stop!' The Wheelhouse Cafe provides excellent breakfasts ( which we can vouch for) with staff whose aim is to satisfy. On the menu as 'French Toast, what came was a very good imitation of 'Croque Monsieur!'- and I enjoyed my bacon roll. Not so far off, is Dalkeith (another town worth the visiting) on roads lined with trees. Get thee to them!

I have been to the wheelhouse cafe a few times and enjoyed: a panino a toastie and the soup of the day. However on my latest visit I noticed that the menu had expanded. I thoroughly enjoyed the spicy meat ball linguine on my last visit. The chef was mindful to create a dish bursting with flavour with just the right amount of heat. The quality of the Scottish beef used for the meatballs was top class. Reasonably priced and the portion size was perfect. The wheelhouse cafe is the hidden jewel in the crown of all the Midlothian eateries . Good to see that takeaway food boxes are available too, for young professionals that don't have time to cook at home; this is a perfect take away: a selection of spicy chicken with al dente broccoli and long grain rice, bacon and avocado pasta and Indian curries available. The wheelhouse mixes fancier dishes with simplicity, with a top class Scottish breakfast available. The wheelhouse cafe continues to exceed all of my expectations. If you are visiting the main tourist attraction: the Edinburgh mining museum, in Newtongrange, then a spot of lunch in the wheelhouse cafe would round of your day and us much better than the cafe in the museum.

I got a vegetarian breakfast which was nice and decently priced. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the cafe was clean and spacious. Perhaps more vegetarian options would be good. E.g. add vegetarian sausages on the breakfast. However, overall a positive experience and I would recommend!

Nice and clean. Can’t make scrambled eggs, but bacon rolls are good. Staff friendly enough. But could do with nice tables and chair. To make it less canteen like.

Nice clean, friendly and well run local cafe. Great for a quality and well priced breakfast. No bells and whistles, just does exactly what you hope for.

The Wheelhouse Cafe serves up excellent food at affordable prices.The convivial, family atmosphere only enhanced my recent visit with my wife and two kids. Eating out with two kids under six can be far from enjoyable. The Wheelhouse provides the kids with toys and crayons to keep them occupied. The chef, Bryan, who was very busy in the open plan kitchen, even came over to welcome us. This personal touch, combined with the friendly manner of the waitress immediately put everyone at ease. He told a very funny,warm and sentimental anecdote about one of Newtongranges finest:Peter Brownlee: A disabled man ;famed for packing shelves in Tesco. A regular customer, a local hero, who recently passed away. Bryan had struck up a kinship with the man and this further illustrated that the Wheelhouse Cafe really cares about establishing customer loyalty. Other businesses should take note and not treat customers like a number. The food was tremendous. I had homemade potato and leek soup and a toasted cheese and ham ciabatta with chips. My wife had a beautiful spicy chicken wrap (with homemade mayonnaise and chilli sauce) and chips. The kids loved their chicken coujons and chips. The portions were fantastic. I thought, from the standard of the food that I was dining out in some swanky west end eaterie. The chef can sure cook. It's worth noting that the chips , again homemade,are better than any you'll get from any chip shops near by. Anyone eating in Newtongrange, should avoid the fast food take aways and treat themselves to a dining experience at the Wheelhouse Cafe. I will be back with the family and when flying solo, I'll pop in for a coffee and enjoy the welcoming and friendly atmosphere 5/5.

Excellent hidden gem for breakfast or lunch, or even grabbing coffee on the go, always worth a visit if passing, I even go out of my way for their cakes! Fast, friendly service, good value money, lots of choice and always a cracking daily special,...

Visiting with friends. I had a club sandwich and cappuccino followed by a bit of home baking. Food is always delicious here. Service good. Coffee is quality and everything reasonably priced. Friends had homemade soup which was also great. Highly recommended.

A great wee find. We enjoyed a fantastic value family brunch. We thought the wee breakfast was a great idea as you could choose any 3 items and was fab value especially for kids. My wife had a good old fashioned ham eggs n chips...

Busy cafe , local location for my convenience. All cooked fresh at time of order . Fresh clean decor with a tv for the times of the local train station around the corner . Everything it need to be from a local cafe .
