Many years since we have been to this venue as illness intervened. It used to be good but we were not sure if it had changed. No problem though. The food and service were first class. Alll the vegetation etc is cooked fresh for each service - nothing is saved and warmed up. The pricing was good as well. Even with 3 large glasses of wine and desert the bill for the two of us was under £50. We would reccommend this place to anyone . Congratulations to the owners.

This is, of its type, as good as it gets. It's not trying to be a gastro pub, it's simple, very large plates of Sunday lunch, served quickly and fresh. It's well priced, particularly as many places are now £16 for lunch. You need to book to secure a table. It is understandably busy. If I was being picky, I would have liked some more crackling with my pork and the beef cooked rare. We will be back, next time we are in the area.

Maybe unfair to review somewhere that would not let us in, but really… how can you turn away a desperately hungry 90 year old man and his family just because he hadn’t made a reservation?! There were plenty of tables both inside and out, we explained that we had been turned away from 3 other locations because they were full or had stopped serving Sunday lunch by 2.30 but the obnoxious hostess refused to show us any kindness and the owner sat nearby and sarcastically wished us good luck in our attempt to find anything else! Go to the Elm Tree Inn, in Elm, instead, it’s ambience, staff and food are amazing and they are open until 3.30:)

10 of us visited to eat on a Saturday evening, the menu was varied and the food delicious. All 10 meals appeared within a few minutes of each other and every single person commented on how good they were. The food is freshly cooked and obviously hadn’t been kept hanging around waiting. The waitress was friendly and attentive, and was really surprised at the size of tip we left. Planning to call back for another Carvery sometime

There are several eating establishments in the area - not many. if any, can match The Wheel for quality, value for money and a warm, friendly atmosphere. At the moment I can't decide whether on the next occasion I'll be ordering the Foot-long Hot Dog or Bert's Burger !!

We were stopping at the Tall Trees caravan park, and eight of us decided to have a meal together for Sunday lunch. We booked the Wheel Inn for 8 people at 2pm. Arriving at 1:30 we ordered drinks in the bar - service a little slow but not unduly so, and we then went into the Resturant to our table. Well organised as the waitress called diners table by table, which meant that there was not the usual queues standing about waiting for your carvery to be dished out. Choice of Beef, Turkey and Pork. Very good choice of vegetables, well cooked and hot. Nice gardens that would be great in the summer. Overall a reasonable pub that gave good value for money. Talking of money it was a pain in this day and age to have to pay by cash, although we did know in advance that it was cash only.

Our visit here was our first. We booked 8 of us for sunday carvery and the girl on the phone managed to get us in for a 2.00 pm sitting saying they were busy. Well thank goodness she did. The food, because of these 3 sittings, 12.00, 2.00 and 4.00 pm the food was as fresh could be. Loads of meat and veg to help yourself too. Then the sweets came out which were terrific and not what some pubs do is say, "sorry the've all gone". The menu says, they have. Then to top it off the staff were great and the young we had was a bundle of fun, which is what we like. We were all camped at Tall Trees camp site and the next time we are here we are booking again. Thanks to all at The Wheel. See you again soon.

While visiting family in Wisbech we decided to go to The Wheel today for Sunday lunch. It was our first time here, but it won't be the last. From the minute we walked in, we felt welcome and the smells emanating from the kitchen were tantalising. We were not disappointed: the large plates were generously laden with our choice of succulent, tender meat and we helped ourselves to vegetables from a wide selection. Tasty gravy completed our meal and it was worth every penny. We're already looking forward to our next visit in October.

Drove out to this small local pub in Wisbech St Mary and as you approach the village from Wisbech it’s on your right . Small local car park and plenty of street parking . As you enter the pub from the door on the right of the building the bar area is immediately ahead serving good ales and usual beverages . As your enter the restaurant there is a really great carvery with lots of choices of meats and a good selection of veg . Note if you are a vegetarian it is a good idea to book in advance and order your veggie meal , although if you don’t you still have a good selection of vegetarian options including vegetarian gravy (really tasty). The pudding selection is brilliant with traditional puds to tantalise your taste buds. Expect to pay around £20 per head for drinks, carvery, puds , followed by tea and coffee . Well worth a visit . The staff are lovely and accommodating too. All round top marks from me.

Went there for the first time today. Upon arrival having never been there we thought the entrance was very hidden and also not very clear where you wait. Confused us a bit. The older man at the bar today served us and there was zero customer service coming from him. He actually made me a bit uncomfortable. Didnt smile once not at all friendly. We was told we'll be called to our table when ready, our table was due2b outside. Table booked for 2 we didnt get called until 2.15 may be just after, and told to get our food but we hadnt even put our drinks on our table, we said this and the young guy said o its this one outside, why they didn't just put us there in the first place was a bit weird, made an uncomfortable wait for someone who has never been here. Glad we ate outside restraunt had the food in there carving and buffett style except meat so it was very hot, cramped and loud with staff shouting about who they had waiting to eat. All a bit caotic. Food itself was lovely no mint sauce though unless it ran out? Were very local in the next village and wanted to support local but i dont think we'll be back the unfriendlyness has just put us right off. Such a shame. Its also semi expensive for what it is compared to other places.

I attended the Sunday carvery with my family and in laws. Firstly, the place does not accept card payments. Luckily we had just enough cash between us. When we first arrived we stood by the bar for 15 minutes, waiting to get served. The room is tiny and people push past. The dining room is very cramped, with no room to push chairs out. The food was very disappointing, frozen Yorkshire’s, frozen potatoes and over cooked meat! Definitely not worth the £13. To top it off, we got charged £8 each for our twin three year olds. They ate only a few mouthfuls. Would definitely not return. I have no idea why people are praising this place - unless they usually eat microwaved meals.

The food at the pub was good and I enjoyed the Sunday carvery meal. However we were let down with the billing. Several family members were incorrectly charged with incorrect change being given. We were also asked to pay for a desert that did not exist as they had run out of spotted dick. My grandmother also asked for a child's plate as she is a vegetarian with a small appetite but was charged for an adult. We paid to avoid an argument but it left us upset at the end of our meal and we will not return. Please note they don't accept cards.

Entrance via the side door, we were greeted by very friendly staff and waited for the carvery to start in the pleasant bar. I have never seen so many horse brasses in one place!! The dining area is bright and clean looking. The carvery area was well stocked with vegetables, Yorkshire puds, roast and mash potatoes, and accompaniments. The meat was turkey and beef and a liver and bacon casserole. I had a slice of turkey and beef and was impressed at the quality of the meats.I could have had more if required. Everything was very hot and tasty. Unfortunately no room for dessert! I am not normally a fan of carvery but this was really excellent. In the area visiting my mum which I do very often and arrived at the Wheel at 6.35pm on Thursday 20th April looking for a drink and a meal. According to the notice on the building they should have been open and serving meals from 6.30pm. We waited until 6.55pm but the place was closed and no one it sight. Tried phoning the number on the board outside but got no answer. There was no note to say that they would not be open so that is why we waited so long – even a regular customer came past and could not understand why it was not open.Phoned a few days later, after we got back home, to get an explanation but the owner first insisted that it was open. I had to assured him twice that it was not as we had waited just over 30 minutes past the opening time. Instead of giving me an explanation he just said he did not know – he was in London. When I said to him that as a Landlord he should ensure that whoever is looking after the place while he is away, sticks to the opening hours or at the very least leaves a note on the outside of the building so that customers know what is happening, he put the phone down on me. This is no way to treat customers.Do not waste your time here.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

My experiences are based on the carvery at The Wheel. The food is actually good and not too expensive, but I have some comments to pass onto those thinking of visiting The Wheel.Customer service: it’s not good. I found the most helpful and friendly staff are the chefs serving the carvery, who allow you to try as much meat as you like. Unfortunately, the waiting and bar staff are rude and unwelcoming. On our most recent visit we arrived to find the bar empty so went straight through to the restaurant, to be told by a grumpy member of staff that we should’ve waited at the bar – with no apology, we were immediately made to feel in the way. The service didn’t improve from there and I felt that if I had made any complaints about the food I would’ve simply been told that it was my fault for not liking it.Vegetarian option: you MUST pre-order it, something that nobody will tell you when you book. I'm vegetarian and was unaware of this on my first visit, so all I could have was vegetables and cauliflower cheese. It seems pretty backwards to me that there’s no immediate alternative - do they really think that not eating eat meat is so unusual?Payment: the establishment has a cash only system which again nobody will tell you when you book so keep that in mind, especially if a large party of you are planning to visit. They do have a sign up that says paying by card isn’t a problem, yet we were told we could only pay by cash.Layout: the restaurant is small and feels very cramped which probably isn’t their fault but may make some people feel claustrophobic and uncomfortable when eating.Toilets: finally, there is only one ladies toilet and there’s no sanitary bin! This is bizarre and needs to change. Unless they want to receive a large plumbing bill from people flushing products down the toilet, they should invest in a proper bin.Overall my opinion is that the food is good but The Wheel needs to improve their customer service to actually make their customers feel welcome. Also, tell customers when they book about their payment system and ask whether they would like to pre-order vegetarian options.

There was roast beef and roast Turkey on offer and a big choice of vegetables and potatoes etc. Everyone agreed that what they ate was excellent. The quality of the meat is exceptional. My wife thinks it was a Sirloin of beef, but not an expert ....whatever it was, it was very good. I would normally have beef and I amazed my wife by choosing the turkey (I don't even eat it at Christmas) ...it just looked great and didnt disappoint when I ate it. The texture of the meat suggested to me it could have been free range. Again, I don't know.I live in Surrey so can't come up here very often. If this place was local to me I would be a regular customer. Also they do a nice local real ale which seemed well kept.

Need to book a table on Sundays as they do sittings at 2hr intervals all cooked fresh and you don't want to miss out on this Sunday lunch, being a vegetarian we was offered an alternative although chose just the veg and trimmings, great selection of vegetables, Yorkshire pudding to die for, vegetarian gravy was made for us and brought to our table. The desserts OMG everything is amazing and nice to see traditional puddings such as apple crumble and spotty dick, home made and not just taken from the box. The staff are very friendly and the service is always excellent. I have returned many times and will be back again for sure

I went to the Wheel with a group of friends from work for my leaving do - so we were quite a large party. Even though this was a Friday evening, we were seated as soon as we were ready, but we didn't feel pushed to hurry. The food was delicious; it is easily the best carvery I have had. After the meal we stayed on to have a few more drinks and it was all very relaxed; we didn't feel at any point that we had outstayed our welcome. A very enjoyable evening.

We have been coming here for over 8 years now for a Sunday lunch and it never disappoints. Staff are very friendly, great service and always a great tasty home cooked Sunday Lunch. We have bought several friends here with us and they have all loved it. We always phone and book ahead due to how busy they are to ensure we get a table. The garden is lovely in the summer, somewhere to sit after a very large meal with a glass of wine!!

My wife and myself visited this Inn today for Sunday Lunch, we had to book in advance which is understandable as we found out why. The place was very busy and we had booked for 4.00pm, and after enjoying a pint in the bar, were shown into the Restaurant which is not over large but comfortable. We were then called by table number to take a plate and for the chef to serve us our main meats, which we had a choice of beef, turkey or pork, together with sausauge and stuffing if required. You then helped yourself to a massive array of freshly cooked and prepared vegetables etc, and sauces.I can honestly say that this is one of the nicest Carvery meals that I have experienced, and we have had so many all over the World on our various Tours.Well done to the Wheel., and we shall be going back again before not too long.

We called in on the off chance Saturday evening to see if food was served. As we were early sat & had a drink of excellent Elgood ale. We were first to be called in & the food was a revelation, the best Carvary we have ever had, all the food was of the highest quality superbly cooked, hot & fresh. Even the cauliflower cheese, which is not normally a favorite of mine, was sensational & I wish I had taken more !!! Would recommend to even the most discerning diner without the slightest hesitation. We will be back...5*****

This is a nice rural pub, went for a celebration there was 11 of us. I understood the landlord had been taken ill. I felt we were hurried in eating and once we had all been served the carvery was cleared away quickly despite us asking for more yorkies.Once we had eaten we went throught the bar and had another drink again felt like they were rushing us out so they could close. Perhaps when landlord there its different Carvery very nice as was pudding and the price was really good !

I always read reviews now before I book or buy anything and having read most of the reviews for this eatery, good and bad, the good outweighed the bad. We had a forty minute drive from Ely with the father in law so we were hoping it was going to be good. It's a lovely restaurant with a pretty garden and the interior Wow! I'm not an elderly person but I appreciated the hundreds of horse brasses that decorated this very clean and bright interior ( not modern though) with tables nicely set out. We had a drink in the small bar while we were waiting for our table and then we were shown to our table (I managed to reserve the last one) by the bar in the dining area. It isn't a free for all and a stampede to the counter to grab your food while it's there. They wait until everyone who has booked is seated and then the waitress tells you when it's your turn to go up. Watching all the food being piled high made me more hungry than ever and I almost got impatient waiting for my turn. I had the turkey and pork ( massive plates by the way!) then proceeded to pile my plate high, knowing I probably wouldn't eat it all but being greedy for all the lovely looking food. The roast potatoes were impressive, quite large and still crunchy, Yorkshire puds, fresh carrots, peas, cabbage, mash and cauliflower cheese with a lovely gravy. The food was lovely and although you don't get a huge amount of meat, by the time I had ploughed my way through everything else I actually left some of the turkey. They are big plates and unless you have a big appetite don't pile it high as it's too much! After dinner had gone down (slightly) the father in law had cherry cheesecake with ice cream and I had the house special banana split. When this turned up I almost gasped out loud. No way could I eat all that ( I offered my hubby a share but he declined) so I bravely ploughed through the cream, ice cream and banana and almost ate it all. Needless to say I felt like I was going to explode but I enjoyed every mouthful and all three plates were emptied and all desserts thoroughly enjoyed. My hubby had an Irish whiskey floater coffee, which he said was wonderful. Father in law treated us and he said it was a very reasonable bill ( just over £60 or so). Thoroughly enjoyed the meal, excellent service and am looking forward to going back.

Decided to go after reading lots of very positive reviews. We were a party of 9, 4 adults and 5 children aged under 10. Place is easy to find, plenty of parking and a lovely beer garden. Old style pub split in two parts, one part the bar area and the other part the restaurant which seats about 45. The carvery is EXCELLENT, great value, all cooked fresh. I went with the pie and it was just what was needed on a wet evening!Staff and the chef were very polite and welcoming. So for a superb value for money carvery .... go there! So definitely recommended.

The Woodmans Cotagelocation-icon90 High RoadBritish

having not been to the Woodmans for quite some time to eat, but many times to drink. Our “eating” experience was very disappointing from ordering the food to having it delivered to the table. The appearance alone followed by the flavour pallet was absolutely awful. To start the garlic bread was served on sourdough bread, the cheese overcooked and burnt & because it was served on sourdough bread, the flavour pallet was totally an utterly incompatible with the “garlic bread” Now referring to the visual impact of the garlic bread, once placed upon the plate and delivered the table. It resembled something that my dog would excrete after a really rather large meal & was totally & utterly un pleasing to the eye & smelt revolting. We now turn to the main course, my wife ordered Hunters chicken and again the visual impact on the plate was equally as bad as the garlic bread. It looked like something My daughter would’ve excreted in her nappy. When she was a baby the chicken breast was soggy. the bacon was overcooked & burnt, the sauce was bitter and the oval appearance was absolutely disgusting. My wife had one mouthful and that was enough I had the gammon which because it was so dry and overcooked the chef had to soak & smother it in maple syrup to give it a modicum of moisture, the texture and flavour, was utterly revolting. Upon requesting to speak to the Owner, who was in the bar & making himself very obvious to other customers, & also seeing the chef pop out & looking in our direction, I then requested to the server that I may speak to the Owner or the chef to discuss these matters, but neither of them had the courage to come and speak to me in regards to the above matters & I speak from a point of view of being the son of an Owner of a very successful pub for some 25 years, they didn’t have the courage of the convictions to come & speak to a customer about the revolting & disgusting food that they placed in front of us. Also to add insult to injury, they had the total and utter audacity to want to charge us for this revolting assault on our culinary and visual senses. The only plus point of the evening was the servicing staff, I can’t say that of the management they’re just cowardly, but the serving staff were utterly professional. Very kind, warm and welcoming.

Excellent, intelligent service in a pleasant and spotless environment. So why only 'average'? Becase we dropped in for Sunday lunch and I'm sorry but the food was airline standard. Roast potatoes and veg were fine but the meat was this cut and overdone. Smacked of a production line. Pity because I imagine if we'd ordered other dishes which were less 'mass produced' they'd have been much better. And sadly we were in the back room which was a bit sterile.
