We have walked past this coffee shop numerous times but never visited until today - more fool us! Staff were very friendly and polite and coffee was fantastic, even my husband was impressed which is saying something given he is a coffee snob working in the industry himself . I would recommend giving this place a try.

This is a fantastic coffee outlet. I say outlet as post-covid, this has remained a hatch-service coffee bar. This is a tiny little coffee house open Wednesday-Sunday, 8am-2pm and is run and manned by one, locally based family. The coffee is, without doubt the best tasting one around; even the decaf tastes like real coffee. They do a selection of dairy alternatives and syrups and an excellent selection of different coffees to choose from. They sell a small selection of cakes and cookies and even offer freshly baked GF goodies on occasion - which I can thoroughly recommend. Great placement on Tanners Bank means you can pop by on your quayside walks!

The owners of this cafe are literally the kindest people on the whole world. My girlfriend and I had our first date there 2 years ago. I reached out and asked if they would open after hours especially so that I could ask my girlfriend to marry me. They did it without hesitation! It made the night so special. Oh, and she said yes. Best cake, best coffee and best people.Thanks you two!

Whenever dad and I come here we're always greeted warmly, the coffee is great and the cakes are amazing, sadly I've only been introduced to them during lockdown and haven't been able to go inside yet but I hope to do so soon!

Fantastic stop off point on a walk for a great cup of coffee and maybe a delicious local baked cake. Take away only at the moment but not long before you can sit in and talk to the very pleasant and helpful staff

Best coffee in North Tyneside here and the cakes and stuff are always nice too. You know it’s a good place when there’s always a queue outside. Staff are dead friendly too, can’t wait to be able to sit in again and enjoy coffee out of a proper mug!!

Having supported this coffee shop since it opened it was so disappointing to be unceremoniously turned away because we only had cash and not a card to pay for our takeaway coffees. You would think that businesses would be happy to take payment any way they can in these difficult times but not only was our cash refused but it was so in a particularly surly manner. Customer service skillls NIL! Needless to say we won’t be returning.

Outstanding! Service is always with a smile. Luxury hot chocolates are delicious! Have just tried a coconut and turkish delight tray bake,aero mint tray bake and peanut butter salted caramel slice and oh my god they were to die for!!! (Not all for me I may add haha) Clear markings for social distancing, card payments only and hand gel on the desk. Keep up the great work guys. Superb local business ❤

Fantastic coffee and tray bakes

Today the Wheelhouse was just serving at the front door - It was Covid opening time. Everyone having a very difficult time and it is so good to see people trying so hard. Stopped twice to have coffee and cake - Really good on both accounts and a lovely guy working so hard. When back to normal and I next visit I will certainly pop in for a meal

Hi, all you coffee lovers. This is one very warm welcoming experience, the hosts that run the Wheel House always make you welcome. The coffee is a delight also if your tempted you can eat your hearts content with an over the average slice of cake. It's only a small establishment, having said that the wife & I have managed to always find a seat, if you find yourself waiting to sit be patient as both coffee & cake are worth the wait. Very clean & tidy, decor sparse ( due to size of establishment) No easy access for lesser abbled persons, that's a shame as all should be catered for these days. To finish; the aroma as you enter is a delight, now go & visit. ENJOY.

Never even heard of the Wheel House, just passing it and decided to stop for coffee and a hot chocolate. Opened in 2018. The staff very friendly. Inside quite small but very quaint. Only here for drinks, my Husband had a Cappuccino and myself a Jot Chocolate, my Husband said the coffee was excellent as they ground the coffee there and then, the hot chocolate was lovely as well.

Update - We visit this coffee house regularly and it never disappoints. In response to a local guides comments - There is plenty of free parking with disabled bays by the old buoys turn left just past j w Turner - literally 2mins away- there are steps to the cafe but just call them and they will give you a hand. It has been mentioned the seats are uncomfortable- we have yet to find this - there are seats with and without cushions the eclectic mix is what makes this a great place. My mum and sister visited this place and (given their vast experience of sitting in coffe houses) this cane highly recommended! It completely lived up to expectations- the ginger cake was so light and beautifully baked. The coffe was absolutely delicious and hot. The place has a warm friendly vibe. It is like a tardis and so worth a visit. I think this will have to become our regular haunt.

The Wheel House is a cute, relaxing place to have a coffee, hot chocolate or tea and sumptuous home made cakes; tucked away just on Tanner’s Bank (the main drag) opposite Fish Quay public car park up a couple of steps, this idyllic hide-away is friendly, relaxing and offers freshly brewed coffee and other beverages, some of the most tempting cakes around and friendly, welcoming baristas. Dog friendly and on two levels it has two distinct seated areas and is a welcome break in close reach of Tynemouth, Fish Quay beach and North Shields. Good value for money. Drop in and let the stress disappear!

Poor surroundings and uncomfortable chairs,not for the elderly or impaired mobility. Large step together inside,no rail either side,poor parking availability.

A year to the day that I walked into the wheelhouse I reviewed it then under the title of ‘coffee heaven’ and today It still is worthy of that description , but more over for me it’s a nice social space where because of it I have met ( and so have many regulars I gather ) some smashing people, from day one whether Leigh Aaron,Julie or Mark know your name or not your or not your always greeted with a hello. It truly serves the best coffee in Tyneside let alone N Shields, it truly is a great place to sit and have a coffee/ drink Congratulations on running a top notch superb venue

Almost a year since my first visit and I tell you from a regular , every day is a delight Leigh and Aaron run the best , friendliest coffee houses in the north east , let alone North Shields , Lovely venue, lovely coffee and YES home made cakes delivered daily And best of all dogs welcome , great for those walks just yards from a beach that dogs are welcome all year round

Super impressed that The Wheelhouse offers three milk alternatives (soya, oat and almond milk) Had the best non-dairy flat white ever - made with Tynemouth Coffee Co beans. Also impressed to see a vegan cake on offer which looked great (didn't try it but did have one of the slices - mmmmm!) It is small inside but the styling is perfect with a relaxed, friendly vibe (tiny niggle... music a bit loud when there are only a few people in and you're sitting under the speaker). It's great to see a new place opening in the Fish Quay area, away from overcrowded Tynemouth. I hope you do well. Two well meant suggestions: something savoury on offer (a quirky cheese scone....stilton & chive?) and an option to order a large flat white. The cups are quite small and mine didn't last me through a slice of cake but I didn't want another full cup of coffee. Will definitely keep on visiting and recommending to other coffee lovers!

Great place to go for a coffee and chat. They also sell the most amazing cake. Small but popular. Staff were very friendly. Outside area to sit in the sun. Some street parking available. We had no probs finding a spot. Definitely worth a visit.

A small but good cafe set back a little bit from the main quay area. I hope it gets noticed by the C2C cyclists. It sells a nice range of cakes (the chocalate cake was yummy) and tray bakes and a good range of coffees and teas, both "normal" and different. I had the turmeric gold tea. Prices ok and staff friendly and efficient. A couple of small tables outside. Recommended.

Met with my brother at this venue. Easy to find and parking on street available plus a pay and display approx 200 metres away. Coffee ok Served in a mug👍 Good variety of cakes available 👍 I found it quaint and comfortable but a bit noisy. Question is would I use again and the answer is yes.

Fantastic place for a delicious coffee or tea and cake, friendly and professional staff and good value....quite small and cosy but unfortunatey losing custom because of a lack of seating.....the mezzanine level could easily be rearranged to accommodate 2 or 3 more tables perhaps....but our favourite place for a coffee when heading to the Fish Quay.

On a recent early morning dog down at the North Shields Fish Quay (a very much up and coming foodie area) stumbled across this gem on Tanners Bank. It is almost innocuous given as it is a small whitewashed building. But step inside and it is so homely and comfortable. It offers a great away baked cakey treats and hot drinks. I plumped for a warming hot chocolate and very tasty orange and almond flapjack. The flapjack was massive and the hot chocolate so rich. Better than anything Costa can offer up. Well worth a visit if in need of a warming drink at a decent price and good cake. Support a local business. Highly recommended

Cosy, good coffees and incredible cakes, what's more to say?

A quaint little café with a chilled atmosphere, a homely aesthetic, friendly staff and great service. Because of being an independant café, the atmosphere and mood of The Wheel House is familiar, it's nostalgic, it feels comforting which is something you don't often get from a franchise or chain coffee shop. The crockery and tableware match and complete the homely aesthetic. The coffee is good, I only ever opt for Americano so can't really offer a full review but there are a fair range of drinks available. I love tea but many cafés just don't put as much effort into their tea as they do their coffee, the same is the case with The Wheel House. Pukka is an okay brand and there is a fair selection but introducing loose leaf tea would take this café to the next level for me. They could also diversify their coffee too, being an independant café, they could really get creative and offer something totally unique. I've visited quite a few times and will visit again, even though the café is quite small, only seating perhaps fifteen to twenty people, me and my partner have always been able to find a seat. The prices are fair considering the location, service and quality of goods. Dogs are allowed in here too, just incase for some reason that bothers you. The café offers homemade baked sweet treats which change from time to time and they help set this place apart. The café has character, it shines in a lot of places and it still has a lot more potential. It's my go-to coffee spot on the weekend.
