The food and the service is fantastic. Front of house manager, Paula, is so friendly and welcoming, you know you are in a special place. This was our first visit and we will definitely be back.

Recently dined at a charming restaurant nestled in the heart of Leith Walk. The dishes were nothing short of spectacular, each one a delightful culinary experience. However, the only aspect that could use improvement is the waiting time between courses. Despite this, overall, it was a delightful night out, and I left feeling thoroughly satisfied.

This was a lovely little restaurant on Leith Walk. Food was superb. Service great from very helpful staff.

Sshhh! I am only sharing this with you in case I can't ever get a table at this gem of a restaurant.Three of us visited and shared everything on the menu, all excellent but don't tell anyone else.

We had been looking to go here for ages and our wait was well worth it. The food is exceptional with a constantly changing menu. I had the prawn wanton for starters, followed by the cod with celeriac puree, sea samphire and red chicory and grapes for my main. Honestly some of the best fish I've had. The flavour combination was out of this world. For dessert I just had to try their signature dish, the walnut whip, a chocolate lovers dream! Definitely going back for more!

We had a perfect two course meal for lunch. The portions were just perfect for a light meal and everything tasted fresh and sophisticated. Healthy, light, and just simply tasty! Possibly the best meal I've had in Edinburgh. Looking forward to trying out their dinner menu as soon as possible Update: there must have been a staff change during covid. Food is now heavier and saltier with far smaller portions than before.

Lovely cafe serving multi course priced meal with local ingredients. Made a lunch reservation, recommended due to limited seating and turnover. Had the lightly smoked Salmon Gravlax and North Sea Coley fish dish, both very flavorful with a couple glasses of well priced wine. Excellent service! Accessible restroom.

Wir haben in diesem kleinen Restaurant sehr lecker gegessen. Die Speisekarte ist klein aber fein. Jedes Gericht war lecker egal ob Vorspeise, Hauptgericht oder Nachspeise. Auch glutenfreie Varianten wurden angeboten bzw. abgewandelt. Und der Service war sehr sehr nett. Und dann gab es noch zu den Vorspeisen dieses unglaublich leckere Schwarzbrot.

Exceptional value for money and lovely service

Simple menu but surprises with great flavours and excellent execution. Polite and helpful staff , reasonable prices and don’t even add service charge. Grilled sea bass with artichoke purée was just heavenly. Sauvignon blanc white wine was great. But the dessert didn’t meet the same standards and was overly sweet even for a person with sweet tooth.

Lovely hole in the wall, serving great food prepared by a small team. Fish and chicken were on point, pipeing hot and delicious, as was the Walnut Whip.

Very very good restaurant. Mostly neighborhood oriented, stylish in an understated way. Innovative take on Scottish tastes and ingredients with "modern European" approach. Definitely recommend to out of town visitors. Skip the touristy traps. Seek this one out.

I have no idea why I haven't been to this restaurant before. What an absolute culinary delight. Fresh ingredients skillfully prepared and presented in a wonderfully aesthetically pleasing way. I personally feel The Walnut offers one of the best value for money for a upmarket restaurant of this calibre in the city. I was there on a Friday lunchtime and all tables were being used so I would recommend reserving.

No idea what the recent bad reviews are about but they strike me as a bit suspicious. The walnuts great. It’s not too fancy, but still delicious. not too pricey, just good quality bistro food with good portions. Been a few times and they’ve always been great, they basically shut the whole restaurant for our civil partnership lunch recently, we’re absolutely lovely and the walnut whip is in my top 3 desserts of all time.

Visited early in 2023 following numerous recommendations. The food was absolutely excellent - particularly the seabass. Pork belly was also delicious and presentation on point! Lovely wine and very friendly front of house staff. We were the last ones left in the restaurant and didn't rush us out. Can't wait to go back!

The second time I have been to the walnut and it is by far the best tasting food in edinburgh. The food is to a Micheline star standard but at a fraction of the price!

I cannot overstate how good this restaurant is. I literally can't think of a meal I've enjoyed so much. At 3 course for £32 it's also an absolute bargain. I will definitely be back.

What a lovely little gem to have discovered! All our dishes were delicious. The whipped goats cheese starter & the ginger panna cotta with rhubarb were subtle with perfect amounts of each flavour. Mains of pork belly the sea bass & the pasta were all beautifully cooked.

Lovely restaurant with delicious well presented food. Good wine selection but you also have the option to BYOB. The staff were friendly and welcoming, it was lovely to see the restaurant was full. I would definitely recommend and I will definitely be going back.

A religious experience! That's the only way I can describe the Walnut. The flavours were sublime (especially the beef cheek starter); the attention and care that were given to us by the staff truly made us feel at home; add to that an impressive wine and cocktail selection to end the evening. Do yourself a favour and book a table!

What a gem of a place! A small, quaint and beautiful restaurant with a lot to offer. Friendly service, gorgeous food, nice ambience and a reasonable price tag. Absolutely recommended, you will not regret it. One of my faves in Edinburgh.

We had a delicious dinner with the roquefort starter & ravioli, followed by the fish (sea bass) & chicken, then the "walnut whip" & affogato for dessert. I would have enjoyed a few more veg with my main. Our third diner was later than expected and the staff were very accommodating in preparing & serving the main entirely out of sync. The food is excellent but the portions aren't large (which was perfect for us). There aren't that many tables so make sure you reserve. The only tiny point for improvement is that the acoustics are less than perfect when the restaurant gets more crowded.

Situated around Leith walk, the restaurant looks promising for the cosiness and flavorful of foods. Personally, the lights inside the restaurant are a little bit dim. Each dishes are Instagrammable with the good portion. The walnut whip is my star. Other dishes are acceptable.

Excellent food and great service a must for everyone

Good neighborhood restaurant which used to allow BYO wine but has now decided not to do so. This is a real shame and, I think, a big mistake. I fear it could struggle to retain many of the loyal regulars at this price point, without the BYO. Much better imo would have been an increase in (even a doubling of) the corkage charge.

A tailored small-scale experience including a hand-written receipt. Tasteful use of texture variance and everything else that makes your taste buds go overdrive. Fantastic, thanks.

Delicious food. Great service. The menu is limited, but you won't be disappointed. I will definitely return. Critical point: It can get loud! The space is small, so with two large parties (6 & 8) on a Friday night, there was a lot of shouting. The staff apologized without a comment from us. It's a place to be merry! But if you want a chill dinner experience, maybe try a weekday or an earlier time before the olds get themselves sloshed.

What a lovely find on Leith Walk! Super cosy venue, lovely staff and excellent food! 3 choices from each course keeps it simple but each course was well presented, tasty and a good portion size. Staff super friendly. Look forward to returning.

Wonderful dining experience at The Walnut! Even though the menu was limited his turned out to not be an issue as more care and attention was put into making every dish exceptional in their flavour and presentation. We would be back again regularly if we lived anywhere near Edinburgh

Food was out of this world, Breaded Cod tartlet was flavoursome. Pork fillet was beautifully presented and had great flavour the chorizo & black pudding croquet was the best I've ever tasted. And to finish the Walnut Whip was to die for. Chefs really know what food is about and have so much passion for it.

Lovely humans work there. Phoned from Texas to buy some surprise champagne a few minutes before my brother arrived for his dinner reservation. The girl/lady took my details and even drew some bday artwork for him to go along with the fizz. 5 stars

Had a great time at the Walnut. Both the food and service was excellent. Pleasantly surprised by the generous portion sizes. Booking is essential especially on busy days and times. There was great vegetarian options available and the staff were conscious of the fact that we were after halal food so made care to mention which dishes had alcohol in them. Look forward to going back.

Fantastic little gem of a restaurant in Leith Walk.

Amazing place we went to on our honeymoon. Staff were attentive and very friendly (and gave us some great tips for places to go out afterwards). Best of all was the food. Generous portions, delicious 3 course meal with fresh bread, not very expensive. The best combination you could ask for. When we go back to Edinburgh I will not hesitate in returning.

Lovely cozy restaurant on Leith walk. We went for dinner, a small and reasonably priced 2 or 3 course menu. Staff were lovely and food had by all four of us was delicious. I would highly recommend a visit to Walnut.

Stunning meal in gorgeous surroundings, served by very friendly staff. The 4 people in our party had different starters, mains and desserts and they were all absolutely amazing. Can't recommend this bistro highly enough!

Been meaning to try this place again for a while after enjoying a Christmas lunch at Walnut a few years ago. Really enjoyable experience from start to finish, was just the right level of busy for a pleasant atmosphere. Good background music, staff are friendly and attentive. Relaxing minimalist decor with a clean and spacious restroom. The menu is very limited but it actually felt nice to not be overwhelmed by choice- and all the available options sounded delicious. We had the three course lunch and were not disappointed once with any of our choices, the food was utterly sublime! I especially loved the fig tartan with pecan ice-cream, such a warming spicy and sweet treat. What a wonderful midweek piece of decadence.

Lovely delicious food freshly made with excellent service

Ok easily the best meal I’ve eaten in months.. that includes many places in London.. the host Christopher was super charming, the food was beautiful, delicious, surprising, filling, elegant and well priced. The ambience is quaint and comfortable and not snobby or rundown. This place is an easy 5/5 and I wouldn’t come to Edinburgh without stopping here. It’s a MUST.

We really enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. Your service was informal, but nevertheless friendly, personable and service-oriented. The food was delicious, not standard and a feast for the taste. If we are ever in Edinburgh again we will definitely visit The Walnut again.

This is a very special place serving delicious food that is beautifully presented. The service is friendly, relaxed and they check in that your meal is okay, which I think is very important. The restaurant has a cosy bistro vibe and serves Pilot beer. The set menu was perfect, and outstanding value at £25 PP. Out of all the brilliant places to eat in Leith, this is now my favourite.

Wonderful lunch at this little Leith gem - being full at lunchtime is always a sign that a place is doing something right. Faultless, interesting and stylish food with bags of flavour. Small but perfectly formed menu and wine list - all well priced. Front of house bang on too. Go.

I’ve eaten at The Walnut twice, several years apart. Both times the food and service were faultless. Every single dish was peak deliciousness. Including the amuse-bouche and the passion fruit jelly they gave us with the bill. 100% would eat here every week if I could afford it.

Had the lunch menu for £25. Every dish was excellent. The walnut whip is one of the best desserts I've had.

This place is brilliant. The manager Chris was very welcoming and friendly, although it was just him out front, he was on top of everything on every table and made everyone feels special not just my table, from what I could see. Chef Byron works wonders with his food, every dish was well thought out and tasted excellent. My partner loved the walnut whip and I loved the lamb especially. Highly recommend and will be going back.

Absolutely fantastic evening! I came because of the BYO wine policy but the food is amazing - the presentation of dishes is Michelin star class and the balance of flavour is perfect. I'm reluctant to post this because it's a cosy space and I really want to be able to get a table next time!!

Amazing meal! Menu is exquisite with fabulous attention to detail. Chef Byron cooks up a storm and Chris does a wonderful job ensuring every customer is made to feel very special. Highly recommend, but booking is necessary as there was not a spare seat in the restaurant and rightly so.
