This was the first time we visited The Walnut Tree and felt very welcome as we arrived for our table booking. The choice of food was superb especially the hot stone steak. The dining area was perfect the service was friendly and very polite. Definitely recommended to anyone looking to book a meal or even just pop in for a drink. Thank you to all staff.

We travelled from our holiday park in Dymchurch to find a country pub/restaurant for an evening meal. The Walnut Tree was the first we came across after a 15 minute drive and we were pleased we did. Although the park was filled with old equipment, the kids (3 and 6) loved it while we relaxed and received excellent service from the staff. Starters are particularly good but we all enjoyed all of our food.

Decided after a drive around to call in to The Walnut Tree to get something for lunch. Had to eat outside as all I can assume is the restaurant inside was full. After being shown to our table, we were informed that there was a wait for food. We waited 30 minutes to order drinks and then had to ask for our food order to be taken after waiting for another 30 minutes. I paid for it all up front because of others joining us. We ordered 2 cokes, 1 lemonade. 1 ham, egg and chips, 1 burger and chips and 1 Beef Bourgeon with vegetables and garlic bread. We waited for well over an hour.... it arrived a huge ham, egg and chip and burger with chips. 5 mins later came, the cold beef stew, with 2 roast potatoes and a dish of dehydrated mixed vegetables overdone in the microwave. I asked the waitress if it could be heated up. 30 minutes later it came back out with the 2 roast potatoes and cold. The bill came to £43 but it was money wasted. I will be interested in seeing if the company read this and respond accordingly?

We have previously eaten dined here for Sunday roasts and have recommended to others however our experience today left us disappointed and frankly quite angry. The booking had been made over 2 weeks in advance and we had specified certain tables due to having young children, they had my contact details so if there were any changes to be made I should have been informed. On arrival we were informed that we could not have the tables we had reserved because they had someone else who had requested the tables, we were then sat at draughty tables and despite asking the waiting staff repeatedly to keep on of the doors closed this was left open causing a cold draught through the dining area which meant we had to dine wearing jackets and our food went cold very quickly. The people who had requested the tables didn't actually turn up until we were leaving which added insult to injury. The waiting staff also did not appear to be very experienced or have much training as I was asked if I wanted meat gravy with my vegetarian meal!!!I will no longer be recommending The Walnut Tree to others and will be looking for an alternate venue in the future

Having used the Walnut Tree takeaway through lockdown and found Karen to be super helpful, we thought we would visit in person once allowed and booked our table as soon as we were able to show our support. How disappointed were we to arrive for Sunday lunch (4 of us) with our email confirmation to discover there was not a table booked in the restaurant for us. We were not met with an apology just a rather indignant lady who didn't seem quite sure what to do with us. One of the younger staff stepped in and suggested they could sit us at a table which was right by the entrance where people walk through making it both cold (near door and annoying when people went by). It was my birthday and was a celebration with our daughter and her partner and was all rather disappointing. The plates are tiny but crammed with generous portions of meat so I would suggest getting some larger plates so that the vegetables could fit on the plate too. (we had the roast). Overall the food was pleasant and the puddings were tasty but the lack of apology and general feeling that we had made the mistake left us completely underwhelmed!

We Visited the Walnut tree in aldington today and wouldn’t go again, clearly a local pub where people knew each other, and the management catered to them and ignored us, 30 mins it took to get our drinks which was then wrong, as older waitress short dark hair, came over with our water I was saying it was the wrong drink, she laughed with the locals and walked off so rude, food well, the meat wasn’t off a joint very bits and pieces and no presentation at all, and meat definitely not cooked that day, it’s was warmed with gravy, which covered the plate, we wasn’t asked if we wanted gravy just poured on. The garden was full of men swearing when there were children sitting at our table and just to top it off, we had the local’s dogs running around and jumping up our table while we were eating and begging for food, some attempt from local’s calling the dogs but other then that nothing. Very disappointed as my friends used the takeaway during the lockdown and the food and service was great x I do feel for the young waitress’s as they clearly need a bit of guidance, but from the attitude at the pub I can se why they haven’t. I wouldn’t recommend.

All of the courses and meals were simply amazing. It's so nice to be able to finish the evening off in the other bar also. Food is freshly cooked and totally huge portions! Really good value for money as well. Looking forward to going again soon.

Living locally we have always supported our close pubs and restaurants. We have eaten in the Walnut Tree on quite a few occasions and found the food and service from adequate to good. However, on this occasion, both the service and food were less than acceptable. On arrival, my wife, son and myself were told we were half an hour late for the booking (8 pm instead of 7.30 pm - we would dispute this, however, accept that things may have been misinterpreted on the phone when booking). This did not justify the treatment we then received. Firstly, before we had been shown to a table or taken our coats off we were told if we wanted to eat we would have to order there and then standing up in the reception area. To comply, my wife and son ordered 'The Combo' and I ordered the gammon and eggs (This had to be done with the waitress standing over us). We were also asked for drinks to which I ordered two sherries and a coke. A coke and two baileys were placed on the bar for us to take back with us. Eventually, we were shown to a table and the Baileys replaced with two sherries. We were then informed there was only one 'Combo' available and we would have to order something else. My wife chose another dish and we then attempted to toast the night to find that the two sherries were 'casked' and putrid. I pointed this out to the waitress who didn't seem to believe me and went and got the bottle and placed it on the table. I again drew her attention to it and said we would prefer to have something else. Eventually, I had a coke and my wife a port (which was not really satisfactory). The waitress then came back and said the second meal my wife had ordered was not now available either. She was forced to make a third choice which was the lamb. Eventually, all three meals were served in a very rushed state. My gammon was burnt to a cinder underneath and hardly cooked on top. It was also tough. My sons 'Combo' was dry. Both meals looked as though they had been thrown together from leftovers. My wife's lamb was reasonably okay, however. By this time, the three of us had had enough and decided to leave sweets and after drinks and find somewhere else for the rest of the evening. No apology was offered for anything that had taken place. Thankfully, we had a much better evening where we ended up.

I'm a vegan while my wife is an omni. This is a pub-restaurant that is able to satisfy both lifestyle choices. I was given a choice consisting of eleven option which makes a change from most non-vegan eateries when you get a 'choice' of one or two. In addition the prices are very competitive indeed (lunch Mon-Fri). Expect to pay about £20 for two for two courses and a drink each. I've never been disappointed with the quality or amount of my meals either. I would recommend booking as it can get quite busy lunchtimes. When doing so and requiring a vegan meal please say so at the time of booking.

Visited this pub restaurant on many occasions over the past couple of years and have to say tonight was very poor. Early evening meal with family - nice table and atmosphere, good starters but main courses very sub standard. Left with all plates still on table after nearly two hours; burger all gristle, chicken pie very dry and bbq chicken with the ribs was best described as “weird” and not eaten. Nearly £90 spent and told “sorry” when discussing the standards of the meals but no discount offered. Shame but won’t be going back to eat here again.

Found this wonderful old smugglers pub a week ago with my neighbours and snuck back for a lunch today. We eat out a lot and it's hard to find home cooked food with fresh veg and great taste and decent portion size but we've found it now! Steak and Kidney as good as good as my Nan used to make served with 5 fresh tasty veg for only£9.95. Insane value. I had the steak and Kidney pudding with great chips last week and that was amazing too! My wife had the cold meat platter which was great and huge with a racking variety just like a meat lovers ploughmans. Perfect place for a large family gathering as no one will go home hungry and it won't kill your bank balance. Be back soon. Compliments to all the staff and the chef on such a hot day too. Once again my merry band of hikers have descended on a pub for a post walk lunch. This time at an old smugglers inn near Ashford Kent one Wednesday lunchtime. . Nice selection on offer as is often the case but what surprised us were the meal prices - £4.95 for a main course from the menu seemed like prices from years ago or the portions would be miniscule but...how wrong can you be, beef stew for me, lasagne for others as well as other choices and no room for a pudding. There were more expensive offerings but could find no fault with our meals at all. No wonder this is a busy pub. Also spotted on the shelf was a plaque commemorating the 'best turned round pub 2013' We will be back as the man said, hopefully our next hike won't be in thick fog.

Great family lunch at the Walnut Tree, Aldington. Of the 30 of us gathered around the table today (ranging in age from just a few months old to a [very!!] spritely lady in her 90's!!) 21 of us are descendants of the infamous Ransley smuggling gang!! The staff were extremely accommodating as the group rapidly increased from 15-20 people initially, to 29 in total (plus a tiny baby). Highchairs provided as requested, and all the food and drink orders were served exactly as requested without any problems (and none pre-ordered either!!) our waitress was polite, patient, helpful and smiling throughout, regularly checking everything was okay, and taking additional orders for drinks all with a smile. The food, as with our previous visits to the Walnut Tree was plentiful and hot, and everyone was served quickly and efficiently which was amazing given the size of the group!! This was a first time visit for the majority of the group, and all said they would definitely be back here again. Already there are plans afoot to arrange another family gathering here in the Spring!! To summarise - good food, good service from all the staff and a good time was had by all!!

We called in there yesterday and what a hidden gem this is. The Inn itself is fascinating as it dates from the 1300s and the food choice was mindboggling for the price you are expected to pay. A phenomenal main course selection for only £4.95 and it is certainly far better than any 'pub grub' I have tasted. Having said that, I opted to try the Nut roast (although I am not vegetarian) and was disappointed as it was burnt around the edges and left a charred taste in my mouth, however, my hubby had the belly pork from the Specials board and (having tasted that) I can honestly say it was 'to die for'. His meal was part of a deal giving him a Starter and Main for £12.00 it was unbelievable. For Dessert he had a huge bowl of ice cream and I had one of the lightest lemon meringues ever produced...…… I like mine warm so requested it was zapped in the microwave (it's a Yorkshire thing) which they were more than happy to do. This is a wonderful place and I for one cannot wait to return.

We visited the Walnut Tree, or was it The Smugglers Inn? (Not really sure, this place seemed to be called both) for lunch while we were passing though.

We had a meal from the lunch menu on bank holiday Monday, without needing to book. The food was fantastic, the service was welcoming and attentive, and the value for money was brilliant. A thoroughly enjoyable experience. I recommend it to anyone.

This is a traditional Kentish pub with good beer. Service was very good. There was a good choice for vegetarians and the desserts were too tempting to miss out on. Very good value meal.

Popped in with an old friend and ended up having spot of lunch. And loved it, for just 12 quid you get 2 courses, and unsualy this included a rather generous rump steak, and even better this is brought to your table on a hot stone (380o hot) for you to cook to your liking. And I loved this, I always have trouble getting a perfectly cooked steak, and you get a choice of sources you can spread on the steak or use as dips. I also had the deep fried calamari which was cooked perfectly. Couple this with the friendliest staff you can meet, and this adds up to a lovely place to visit, I will definitely be back for more steak.

Please do not spend your money here. The food was absolutely disgusting. I had ribs and chicken combo. Ribs were out of a packet with just fat on. The chicken was a thigh with almost black coloured meat, and the chips were of the poorest quality and swimming in fat. My daughter and sister had a burger which was some kind of mushy meat, again the poorest quality. The pub is filthy, toilets were broken so were told to use disabled but the door lock was broken. I'm now sitting at home with a stomach ache and feeling thoroughly disappointed. The place needs shutting down.

My son and I were passing the pub looking for lunch and after a quick phone call we were immediately inside and seated. We had time to peruse the good menu but were set on a roast dinner. Our order was taken before us being shown to the table. Dinner duly arrived and what a plateful of meat we got! We chose the King and the Queen roast which at £9.95 & £8.95 we're good value for a five meat roast. The gammon and turkey were particularly tasty. Having seen a good range of puddings served up at the adjacent table I just had to have one of those too.

Although the food was good and a three course meal for two at 23 pounds is good value the whole experience was ruined because of how cold the pub was and this ruined our anniversary meal as eating in cold place was not good

The normally good reputation of the Walnut Tree was tarnished last Friday(9th Feb) by a combination of slow service, no communication and the lack of adequate heating. The restaurant was very busy but there only appeared to be 3 staff members on duty in the restaurant. We had to wait 15 minutes before someone took our order. It took 45 minutes for the meals to arrive and during this time, another table who arrived after us were served their main meals before us. No information or apologies were given as to why our food was taking so long to arrive. When our meals did arrive the roast potatoes were almost too hard to cut or chew, and the Yorkshire puddings had shrivelled virtually to nothing and lacked the usual taste and texture.

Excellent meals, deserts and drinks. Interesting room, read all about the history of the pub and the smugglers gangs that used to use the place, room was a bit cold when we had our meals but it did not stop a good visit

An excellent pub/restaurant with atmosphere aplenty. Once the haunt of smugglers and full of their history. The food is excellent and the specials menu exhaustive. Portions are very good too. Prices for the lunch menu are very affordable with starter and main for less than £8. Highly recommended.

Omg this is the place to go for a real like mum's roast dinner, all size meals just love their roast dinners, so much to eat you get so full up you can hardly move just the best. The management and staff so friendly can't do enought for you. Such a friendly pub

We were staying at Port Lympe, as the restaurant there was fully booked we did a google search and The Walnut Tree popped up. And are we glad it did. Staff brilliant! Surroundings rustic and quirky!! Food Amazing!!! There were seven of us and for food and drinks came to just over £70!!!! We tried to book for the next day but they were already fully booked!!!! Can understand why. Would definitely return here if down this way again.

Meeting a distant relative, we decided upon this remote village pub/restaurant.Menu and Dish of the day held great promise.Restaurant staff a little distracted.Bar unattended.Menu options complex (well, you can ave this off the board and that off the menu but not that off the menu and this off the board. Oh. You want a steak ? Well, No because... Yawn.Ham Egg and Chips seemed a safe option - and was absolutely delicious !

Decided to take the family to the Walnut Tree Inn PH for afternoon Sunday Lunch. They define their lunches as normal, Queen and Kingsize. Each main meal has a taste of different roast meats. No good if you are a Vegan, but there are alternatives.Lots of healthy veg. (5) plus roast potatoes, and York. Pud. Nice meaty gravy.Their puddings (sweets) looked great just no room for one. Next time I am going for a starter then a sweet. Staff were very pleasant and a nice atmosphere.

Today 23/3/2023 my partner and myself decided to have lunch at the Hare and Hounds. The time was 14:45 and I was aware that the kitchen closed at 15:00. That being said we were greated very unfriendly
