I’ve wanted to eat here for some time, so to celebrate the end of lockdown we had dinner here with friends. The food was amazing. Summer salad with quails eggs followed by pork fillet. An amazing wine list and very good service. Easy to see why the Walnut Tree enjoys its reputation. Highly recommended.

Fantastic lunch (again...second of this year) at what must be one of the best dining venues in the UK. Coped brilliantly with the nonsensical government restrictions to deliver a faultless set lunch accompanied by some great drinks and relaxed, professional service.

Some of the best food we have every had, hands down. We went as a "Meant to be Wedding day" meal and we were not disappointed with the food or the service, Everyone was lovely and helpful and again the food was to die for. We had 3 courses and each one as good as the last. We did the typical couple thing of trying each others dish and all 5 dishes were brilliant (Desert was the same, as neither of us could resist the sound of the Chocolate and Praline Paris-Brest) The Micheline Star is well deserved!! Sorry we didn't get any photos to share with you it didn't last long enough for me to pull my phone out. Now stop thinking about making a reservation and go do it.

Been coming here for past 11 years and felt on our last 2 visits it had lost its mojo, but our visit on the 3rd December certainly impressed and we had an excellent evening. Staff provided tip top service, the cocktails were fab and the wine list provided lots of choice. We thought the Alsace was a perfect match for the John Dory (the stand out dish of the evening) and the sweetbreads and soufflé for starters great. Pork main didn’t mention black pudding accompaniment. Only criticism was the cheese, as had a better selection previously and served too cold. Yes more expensive than other restaurants in the area but haven’t been out much this year!

I had lunch here in November 2020, and really enjoyed every aspect of my meal. I ate from the set lunch menu, so my starter was pig’s head cromesqui with celeriac remoulade, which was gorgeous. (Cromesqui turned out to be like a fish-finger, only pork, so a pig finger). And the main course was hake with potato & olive cake, which was just as nice. All the food displayed a real attention to detail, and was very impressive. Finally, the staff were all taking the Covid virus seriously, and wore their masks throughout. I will definitely be going back next time I'm near Abergavenny.

We travelled the length of Wales to visit the Walnut Tree, for a belated Christmas present. Little did we know when we made the booking that this was to be the last night before a second Covid-19 Welsh lockdown. As a Michelin star restaurant with an excellent reputation, it was no surprise to find the restaurant full when we arrived, and it obviously also has a loyal local following - the two ladies on the table next to us could walk home! The ambience was comfortable and warm but never stuffy. Full Covid precautions were in place. The food was absolutely delicious. My wife stated that the tandoori monkfish was not only the best starter she’d ever had, but close to being the single best course she had ever tasted. High praise indeed! My double cheese souffle was likewise sublime. We both chose the fillet steak for our main course which was wonderfully tender and the puree heavenly! My blackberry and apple vol-au-vent was the choice of the desserts and an Irish coffee completed a wonderful meal. We will return!

We visited the Walnut Tree for lunch on Wednesday7th October. The service was friendly and courteous. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. It was being enjoyed by a real range of diners from 1 to 80 plus - who, given the cheerful buzz of conversation, seemed very content with their food. Service was attentive and prompt without in anyway being rushed. We appreciated some good quality and reasonably priced wines by the glass. It was clear that many of our fellow diners were regulars and if we lived any closer I am sure we would be too!

We had dinner at the walnut tree, the food was lovely and the staff were very nice. A couple of wine choices we made were not in stock and the venison was sold out but other than that good food all round and the replacement wines were good. Worth a visit if you are in the area. My only suggestion is that they work out the entry system, you have to stand outside and wait to be shown in, the staff don’t seem to watch this closely so you end up peering through windows whilst guests are acting trying to attract staff members, in the end, we like others walked in as we were getting very wet and cold.

After following our satnav and finding ourselves going down two lanes with signs half way down them stating "No access to the Walnut Tree" we finally arrived. I would advise using the satnav to get to the approximate area and then using your eyes, as it is on a good sized road.We were warmly greeted and while seated in the bar area to study the menus were provided with a welcome amuse-bouche.I enjoyed one of the best meals I have ever eaten, Pork Loin with Glazed Cheek, so delicious it melted in my mouth.Throughout the meal the staff could not have been more professional and attentive.

We ate here two nights in a row and there was enough choice to keep us happy for both nights. The fish starters (plaice and monkfish) are very simple presentations, but tasty and chef Shaun Hill finds that elusive second between undercooked and cooked. My beef main was really tasty too and so, I’m told, was the cod. We shared excellent puddings. On the downside, the Manager Etienne is a disgrace. When we arrived the first evening at 8pm, the restaurant was almost full. I had to ask three times for someone to take our order and then Etienne appeared he said dismissively, “Are you in a hurry?” No apology. My wife had told Etienne on the first evening that she has an onion/leek intolerance. She reminded him on the second evening. He then served her a cod main course that contained many leeks. He didn’t apologise when taking the plate away. I had to eat on alone. My main should have been taken back. After we had finished eating, I went into the kitchen to complement the chef. Etienne charged in and removed me. I did not mention anything about him to the chef. Back at the table I told him I was not happy with his behaviour and he said, “I hope you never come here again”.After we had paid (in full for everything, INCLUDING service) I asked to see Shaun Hill in the bar and reported what Etienne had said. He said nothing at the time. He aplogised in an e-mail later, but took no further action. (I had sent him this review for comments a week ago). You would have thought that with resataurants struggling, replacing a staff member that damages your hard-won reputation would be sensible.

Visited for a late lunch on a Thursday. The restaurant was busy, with plenty of professional, friendly staff. The set lunch was served quickly and efficiently but never felt rushed. An amuse bouche was a welcome surprise and the bread was lovely. Both starters and both main courses were interesting and different and there was a good choice of desserts. Only one small suggestion for improvement - an acknowledgement of a reservation beforehand would be helpful.

Went for lunch last week to celebrate my partners birthday, accompanied by his mother. There were number of elderly people in the restaurant and due to his mother's age, my partner had telephoned the day before to check on staff using PPE and arrangements in place for the restaurant to be Covid-secure and he was assured. Unfortunately the member of staff who greeted us and served on our table was wearing her visor raised with her mouth and nose fully exposed, in other words she may just have well have taken it off. It ruined our experience and we made a decision not to complain at the time due to embarrassment and there was nobody there who looked like a manager and our waitress was the most senior in terms of age, and we detected a hint of attitude at the time of arrival. The food was good not exceptional and not what I was expecting from a Michelin Star. Overall thoroughly disappointed.

We had a pleasant evening at the Walnut Tree Inn, and staff were kind, patient and reasonably attentive (though somewhat distracted at times). However, we were sadly disappointed with the food. It was unimaginatively presented and creamily boring. We’ve been to other Michelin star restaurants where the reason for the accolade is clear; it was not evident to us here, I’m afraid. Our local country pubs are better than - and half the price of - this.

I used to go regularly in the Taruschio era but, for no good reason, less frequently recently. It was good to go back. Slicker than in the old days but with at least one familiar face. The halibut that I had was exceptional and worth the trip alone. Excellent fish beautifully prepared. The other dishes that we had were good but didn’t have the same edge. I think perhaps we didn’t choose well and some of the dishes I saw on other tables looked more interesting. So we will need to go back and check. Which I will be very glad to do.

Delicious meal at the Walnut Tree this evening. First time there - two of us - food was excellent and the staff were superb. Friendly, helpful and welcoming. Would definitely go again - but would try and get a table for later in the evening when I imagine it’s more lively. We went super early - 6.30pm - and it was almost awkwardly quiet. No ambience and no music or anything - felt like we were being really loud just chatting - awks! But to reiterate- food = wonderful, and service = fantastic. Very positive overall!

We booked a table as a belated anniversary treat. On arrival we were at the bar and had our first taste of the pretentious, passive aggressive tones that unfortunately set the tone for the evening. I asked what brandy they had and was shown a bottle that they use ‘for cocktails’ I was then told they have cognac (I know to the connoisseur, brandy and cognac are different but I absolutely do not count myself in this category and didn’t need to be belittled) So a cognac was chosen and because I wanted a mixer with it you’d thought I’d asked the barman for one of his kidneys, not the best start! Oh and I make no apologies for wanting a mixer with my cognac, I will have my drinks how I LIKE THEM!

Having high expectations of this restaurant, we were very disappointed. Both our starters were delicious scallops and monkfish , however both our main meals of cod and rabbit were served cold. The cod in particular. When we mentioned this to the waiter we were made to feel uneasy. The cod was taken back and reheated but although hot when presented back was overcooked. I informed the waitress that I was disappointed and we were informed that we wouldn’t be charged for that main dish. However I felt they really missed the point! The desserts of coconut parfait and lemon tart were also delicious so it was a shame that we were not treated better over the mains.

Saturday 21st December 2019 - lunch for a family of 5 (ages 21 to 64). Just perfect. It was busy - of course what else should one expect of such a great restaurant, but service was still very friendly and brisk. There is a decent amount of choice on the menu. We had a variety of meat and fish dishes, and not a dud to be seen - all excellent. There's plenty of choice on the wine list too, and prices are very fair - unlike many other restaurants of a similar standard which charge outrageous mark ups - not here! Our youngest used to be a very "picky" eater, but experiences like this have really developed her taste buds...she loved her lunch here. All in all a really excellent lunch. It was Saturday evening and it was fully booked but when paying close to £100pp it would be nice to have a bit more space and some linen or curtains to absorb some of the noise. We are (very) local and used to eat here regularly until 2006. We gave the restaurant a try in 2009, but suffered poor service and salty cooking, so had not returned for a decade. Given the restaurant still has ia star, we thought we should try it again... On the positive side, the service was very good, the wine (my choice) was excellent and the cheese dish satisfying. Unfortunately it ended there: Steak Tartare pulluted by onion or similar vegetable - returned substantially uneaten. Issues were pointed out to the very nice waitrss, but remained unaddressed. Chef - you are in Monmouthshire, the local meat is awesome, display it but don't mess with it and if you do please explain in your menu so that people know not to order. Veal Kidney starter - kidney cooked to perfecion but covered in totally oversalted sauce. Rabbit loin and trimmings again well cooked, but swimming in a wildly oversalted gruel - complete with a spoon to eat it with - Seriously Chef??? Venison dish - relief only mildy overseasoned (maybe I was lucky). White chocolate and caranmel fondant, again well cooked but fool that I am I should have guessed - nt caramel but wildly oversalted salt caramel. Needless to say, this restaurant won't be getting another visit

What a wonderful time we had at the Walnut Tree celebrating our wedding anniversary. Having never been to a Michelin star restaurant before, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the food was delicious and the service was friendly and polite without being stuffy. The portions are small but exquisitely presented and if you eat meat and fish, there is a great choice of food. My husband opted for monkfish and deep fried mussels as a starter and had fillet of beef with ox cheek as his main. He loved both and having never eaten ox cheek before, said it melted in his mouth. As a vegetarian, there was only one main course option and if I’m honest, I found the mushroom tart a little underwhelming. My starter of Jerusalem artichokes with pasta was inventive and interesting and my fondant dessert was just divine.

We were a family of five visiting the local area. The location is good, the buildings welcoming, and the service efficient. If only there was a view of the Skirrid in silhouette...it would be perfect, albeit a field of cows worked. Most importantly, the menu had great choices, and the food was wonderful - both starters and mains. The service was generally great - we interacted with 5 or so staff - and they were very professional, friendly and attentive. The only negative item of note - was the demeanour of what seemed to be a head waiter (the one with tattoos down the neck) - who seemed unlike the other front of house - it jarred - he seemed rushed, unfriendly, perhaps even contemptuous? & took no attempt to engage. We put it down to an off night - but it didn't spoil a great occasion.

The lighter part of the rabbit was tasteless and the jous just was to strong as with my grouse. So, so excited when I saw grouse was on the menu I had no hesitation in ordering as it is my favourate game meal. Unfortunately it was really not the standard of it's star rating. , We have eaten all over the world in many 3 Star restaurants. Paragela in Rome, Arkaz Sansabastian, The Berkeley London, Reymond Blonc A Le Monoir, 4 of Gordon Ramsey, Fat Duck and Michel Roux in Bray. So, as this was my 75th birthday and they were told, my husband did expect at least one candle.

This was a really good place for a reasonably priced lunch. Interesting well cooked food. I particularly liked the fact that you could have carafes of wine, which made it easy for a small group to habe both white and red.

Went here as a treat for my 'foodie' partner having never experienced Michelin Star before. Impeccable service, excellent food, great wine selection and well priced. My partner loved the menu and struggled to select what to order due to her love of all that was on offer.

Had dinner at The Walnut Tree last night with my son and girlfriend. Everything was perfect so I really don't understand some of the negative reviews it has received on this site. The staff were welcoming and friendly and gave us a s much time as we liked to choose from food and drinks menu. All our meals, amuse bouche and breads were all stunning. Wine list was comprehensive but not overwhelming and catered for all tastes and price brackets. Service was efficient and friendly and not stuffy or pretentious as we have experienced in other Michelin starred establishments. All in all a lovely experience. We stayed in one of the cottages too which was gorgeous with plenty of delicious provisions for breakfast and a complimentary bottle of wine. Would highly recommend a visit. We will certainly be returning and recommending to friends.

Prebooked dinner here to avoid disappointment. Arrived, greeted warmly by smiling & friendly staff. The barman took our order of drinks and asked if we wanted to go straight through. The room was busy but not crowded. We noticed we were the youngest couple in the restaurant and WE aren't that young! We were served a delicious appetizer while waiting to order. Its always a good sign when you can't decide what to order off the menu. After some musing & deliberation I ordered the cod on a bed of tomatoes, chili and ginger to start. For main I went for the turbot served with sweetcorn type sauce and for dessert the hungarian trifle. My partner opted for the meatier dishes which he enjoyed.

Always full, it is a treat to eat here. The dishes are modern British with excellent flavours, and the cooking very precise.

This is our second visit to The Walnut Tree. We were going to pass it on our way home so thought, why not, and booked the day before. The staff were friendly and helpful as before. The atmosphere is ordinary but we were there for the food. We had an enjoyable meal but nothing special, we have had better at local restaurants. Don't get me wrong it was very good but I want 'fab, different, great, memorable' not just 'nice' from a restaurant of this standard. We do like their lunchtime menu though and at £35 for three courses feel it is good value. But we will not go back.

This was our second visit to The Walnut Tree Inn. The first was for lunch, but on this occasion we attended for Dinner. The Inn has several cottages which can be hired, but we chose to stay at The Angel Hotel in Abergavenny which is under the same ownership (see my separate review of the Angel Hotel). It is worth noting that the Angel Hotel provides a complimentary taxi service to and from the Walnut Tree Inn for those staying in Superior or Deluxe rooms and Suites.

Just came back from our meal and would highly recommend here. From the initial entry we were made to feel welcome and staff couldn't do enough for us. I didnt have a clue as to what some of the menu was and the one man on the bar was very helpful! We ordered drinks and was brought an appetiser which tasted amazing! When then ordered and was taken to our table. Nothing felt rushed and staff were friendly and happy to help. Food was delicious and the staff put a candle in my desert to wish me a happy birthday. The bill wasnt too bad either. We were that pleased we booked online for next month to have another meal.

This was a birthday treat which was very underwhelming compared to other one star restaurants visited for special occasions. No atmosphere and very rushed. Food was pleasant but not up to the high standard you expect for a £200 meal. The waiter knew nothing about their wine list and was inattentive. We made several attempts to grab waiting staff attention in a room that wasn’t packed. Very disappointing.

Having dined at the Walnut Tree last year, when we visited the area again this year, it was a certainty that we would return. It didn’t disappoint. Along with the attentive and friendly staff, one of the things we like about the Walnut Tree is that the menu often offers a diversion from the mainstream. We both had fish for our main courses; tasty and well presented. The wine list too provides some interesting options. On our previous visit we tried a splendid Spanish Godello, and this time a delicious Californian Chenin Blanc.

My husband and I decided to visit the Walnut tree for our wedding anniversary. Being fairy local I'd been looking forward to visiting for a while. As well as a very strange layout to the building, we were rushed through our meal and the food was incredibally dull.

We visited this restaurant to celebrate my wife’s 50th birthday this week. All the staff were helpful, knowledgeable and welcoming. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed all our food and wine. We both chose different dishes from the menu and they were all cooked to perfection for us. We hope to return soon and we thank the team at the Walnut Tree for making our evening so enjoyable. We had a fab night!

Definitely not a Michelin Star Restaurant, maybe it was a long time ago but not anymore! Food lacks flavour, aroma and presentation. The flavours are non existent the Cheese Soufflé just tasted like mustard and the Skate dish the most flavour that it had was the fried potatoes, the desert was not intended to be sweet I understand but the only flavour that you have is the 70% chocolate that they use. The dishes are badly plated and presented just look at pictures there’s no love or passion in this dishes, guests before they taste the food they eat with their eyes and nose and there’s nothing there to look or smell. I know that Michelin doesn’t care that much about service at the one star level but the plates are dropped on the table without even a brief description, and they come out of the kitchen at the speed of light like if they are already pre-made and you only need to warm up. I’ve worked in plenty of Michelin restaurants and I don’t feel it’s fair for their Star to be put at the same level that the Walnut Tree Star, it’s not even a Bib Gourmand! If this one as 1 Star please give 2 or 3 to all the other ones around it!

Yes, as other reviewers have said, it's not cheap (though I'd love to know if they have been to a Michelin starred restaurant that is...) but it is wonderful. I wanted to try multiple things on the menu and was not disappointed with what I chose- absolutely delicious and well washed down with champagne. The service was very attentive, but not fussy in as much as our glasses were always full and meals were served promptly, but without the fuss of pulling out chairs and putting napkins on laps which I tend to find uncomfortable. I would definitely return.

This was my first trip to La Ribera and it was very enjoyable. Friendly staff, amazing food (I had the Brazilian chicken). Crisp, tasty beer and real Italian Gelato too. Food was great value for money and such a welcome change from the plastic pre-packed food served in so many pubs and bars these days.
