The Waggon and Horses in Barnsley

I recently visited the Waggon and Horses on a Friday with my Mum for lunch and we both had the Fish and Chips. The Waggon never fails to impress the food was great and services levels top notch as usual. The old saying you get what you pay for is true in this instance the Waggon is not the cheapest but I have yet to have a bad meal there and am always impressed with the food and service given. In my opinion one of the best pubs to visit in Barnsley if you want quality food and service, I have been many times with family and friends and would highly recommend.

A lovely traditional country pub,lovely food , warm & friendly staff .

Service was good, but the fish was all batter and not much fish, chairs are not comfortable, very pricy for what it is. shame as I was looking forward to it.

Visited today to have a birthday meal for my fiance, after going out walking. The pub was lovely, the staff were friendly, helpful and gave great customer service. The food was absolutely fantastic and so flavoursome. We had one of the specials each, Steak and Salmon. Nothing was wasted. I was too full for dessert but my fiance had Mississippi Mud Pie, but I did have a bit he left. My photos haven't come out too well... but we can highly recommend and hopefully will go again soon. Thank you all.

I find it a bit difficult to review the Waggon because just about all the relevant possible superlatives have already been used. However, this place is especially deserving of a further attempt. Our last visit, my wife and myself chose the roast dinners, she went for the turkey and I picked the turkey and pork. Both plates had generous portions of the respective meats and all of them were of excellent quality and cooked to perfection. Along with the meat came seasonal vegetables, a Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and stuffing all accompanied with lashings of gorgeous gravy (See what I did there). Obviously, the main attraction for most people is the food but there's more to it at the Waggon here, you really do feel the warm, friendly atmosphere immediately you're met by any of these four lovely people :- Sam, Tony, Paul and Barry. It also must be said that the rest of the staff are no different which makes visiting here such a pleasurable experience. Other features are their specials nights and one of particular note is fish and chips night. Some time ago, I said to myself, I won't have fish and chips except from a reputable fish and chip shop that was turned on its head when I sampled the ones at the Wggon. Absolutely superb. We now live in Wakefield but that hasn't prevented us from returning, whenever we can, to this very special place.

We’ve really been enjoying our visits to the Waggon & Horses. We are welcomed into a warm pub, eat delicious meals, from Sunday Lunch to Friday Fish & Chips to A La Carte, and the service is polite, friendly and very efficient. The whole experience is a treat. Thank you.

I had the pleasure of experiencing exceptional service from Fran at the Waggon & Horses Restaurant. Her positive attitude and attention to detail elevated our dining experience. The thick and flavorful gravy added a delightful touch to the meal, showcasing the restaurant's commitment to culinary excellence. Highly commendable!

Best food in the Stocksbridge/ Barnsley area not cheap but worth every penny.

Stopped here during our walk for some drinks and a snack. Chips and Pigs in Blankets were lovely. Friendly staff too!

Have been a couple of times recently after not visiting for years. It is a bit more on the expensive side. More towards 16 per meal. Which I guess isn't all that bad. Kids menu. With entertainment pack. Friendly staff Good food. Chips are divine.

Being publicans ourselves we notice a lot of things others don't. This place serves excellent food and all the staff made us feel welcome. We had lunch today and I have to say the homemade pie was delicious, we will be back. Thankyou

On arrival we were shown to our reserved table by very pleasant staff. Our seats were comfortable, and the place was warm and welcoming. There was a very varied menu, including a la carte and specials. When the food came, in good time, it was cooked to perfection and reasonably priced. We had a wonderful visit and would recommend.

Great place and great atmosphere, will certainly be going back again

Came here for my friends birthday today, was great from start to finish very professional and couldn't do enough for you. Lots of gf options which I loved and there was a surprise for my little boy after his meal which was a lovely touch. Would love to come again!

Lovely food and wine as always. Staff were very attentive.

We have never had a bad experience here. It is our go to place when visiting family. My daughter is coeliac, and she knows that she can trust them to serve her a gluten free meal. Food is well cooked and well presented. Sunday roasts are very generous portions. The Yorkshire puddings are very good! Staff are pleasant and efficient.

Would definitely recommend a visit here. The service was great, very warm and welcoming. Food was lovely and the pub has such a nice cosy atmosphere.

Excellent food, and excellent Service

As soon as we walked in the staff was brilliant and attentive gave us a choice of tables . The food was amazing and it was nice when I said I wanted the lamb cannon that the waiter said good choice it was his favourite too. We will be back could not fault it and highly recommend it

Found this place on trip advisor. A Gluten free heaven. Nearly every dish and all the sweets were GF. Even if you are not GF this place is superb. First the service was excellent. Paul and his team Chloe, Millie and Charlie were very friendly and always on hand. The food was first class 2 x Sunday lunches, Fish Linguini and a large battered fish and chips. All followed by a choice of 7 sweets . Sticky toffee was my choice. Although an hour away from where we live, we will certainly be back.

A very friendly laid-back place to eat

Having enjoyed our first visit so much, we took the folks out for an evening meal. Having missed out on the sponge pudding last time, there was method in not ordering starters. Two meat and potato pies and beer battered king prawns all being gluten free ordered with a non gf lasagne and garlic bread. As before the pie was delicious with chunky pieces of meat lining the bottom of the dish with a jug of thick tasty gravy to keep adding to the meal ( although I didn’t appreciate we’d paid extra for gf gravy until I looked at the bill when I was writing this ). I would have been interested to know if we hadn’t said gf, if the gravy had been free 🤔 There was a choice of mushy or garden peas and my preference having seen both was the garden variety. Finished the meal with gf cheesecake and sponge pudding with custard. Asked for an extra spoon so we could share and as such, we got lashings of custard as two little jugs appeared. Service from Paul as before was spot on and also from the lady who served the puddings although I didn’t catch her name. A really good evening with excellent food. Next visit; Sunday lunch.

Very slow service. Limited menu and priced as though something special when in reality it’s the same food as all pub restaurants. Reading through the responses it’s clear that she cannot accept constructive criticism and respect the findings of customers.

We visited for the first time yesterday for Sunday lunch on the recommendation of our friend. Just wanted to say it was delicious, the roast beef was so tender and the creamy mash was to die for. We loved it so much we’ve booked to come again. Got to say the restaurant staff were great, very attentive and friendly, nothing was too much trouble.

Lovely countryside pub. Historic building. Beautiful views. Food and service excellent. Was very busy but we were able to get a table quickly. Outdoor seating area too and ample parking spaces.

I hadn’t been to Oxspring for years, my family comes from penistone but as time goes on life happens! But my partner was researching places to go and chose the Waggon and Horses. Well, it was that good we went twice in a week! It is evident they pride themselves on excellence and customer service!! The food was nostalgically delicious and gave me all the feels of home, which is always a win! I feel in my heart we will become regulars now!

We had the Lasagne and the Haddock and Chips. The standard of the food was truly excellent. A lovely meaty lasagne and very fresh and succulent haddock, both perfectly cooked. The service was both friendly and efficient. The standard of the drinks was also excellent. A very nice Merlot, beautifully served, and whilst John Smith's is a fairly standard draught beer it was nicely chilled (for those who like it that way) and formed a nice head. The best compliment we can pay is that we thoroughly enjoyed the food and drink, and felt totally relaxed here. Well done Sam and Tony - here's to the next 25 years! Chris & Diane

Fantastic menu, delicious food, brilliant service.

Lovely lunch at this Lovely pub. We were cycling on the trans pennine trail and stopped here and had two great hot sandwiches with chips. It was a nice day so we sat outside and enjoyed the view

Sunday lunch on the 23-07-23. We are so lucky to have the Wagon and Horses close to us. We know that when we eat here we are going to be incredibly well looked after. The team are welcoming and attentive without being intrusive. The food (4 types of meats on offer, locally produced where possible) is of the highest quality and the Yorkshires great. They have a specials board and an ever changing deserts menu. I cannot recommend the Wagon and Horses highly enough. A family business which is a real credit to the patrons Tony and Sam!

We are never disappointed here. Great food and great service. Staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome. The whole table had meat and potato pies. They were delicious! An excellent lunch!

Came today for a birthday lunch and what a treat! Lovely atmosphere and welcoming. I had the lunchtine meat and potato pie with mushy peas and would definitely recommend it. The meat was tasty and succulent and lovely thick gravy. Also shared a portion of home made chips which werd also delicious. Good value too with 20% off through July!!

This place was as good as it gets but the last twice I've visited its been nothing special. Needs to up its game to visit previous high standards.

Called in for Sunday lunch today. Absolutely beautiful, couldn't fault it. Staff were so lovely and friendly. Would recommend this place to anyone. Will definitely be returning. 5* from us.

Very expensive for what you get we ordered the burger+bacon that came with just chips for £16.95 and a jacket potato for £9, the burger price is just too expensive for what it is where is the salad on the side? as for the jacket...

Brilliant experience all round. We usually pop in for their lunch menu, which is great and well priced, but I've finally had the Sunday roast (beef for me) - fabulous flavours, everything cooked to perfection. Best of all though is the service - all the staff are spot on, friendly, happy and attentive, so I expect their bosses make a working environment where all that is possible. Thoroughly recommended - and we usually try to book in advance for weekends.

Called for Sunday lunch, service was brilliant as was the food. Good sized portions too. Excellent pint of Landlord to wash it down too. Very impressed with the gluten-free options, if you've got coeliac you'll be fine here.

We ate at the wagon less than 6 months & the food was lovely & reasonably priced .. hence our return on Friday.. however although the food was very nice the ridiculous hike in the price of the food is a joke ... £25 for...

Had Sunday lunch with my husband here today & it was beautiful. I had turkey & my husband had beef. Meat was cooked to perfection, homemade Yorkshire pud, mash, roast potatoes & large variety of fresh vegetables was presented. All staff are friendly & accommodating....

Visited on Good Friday for food and drinks. The food and service was excellent, exceptional value for money with decent sized portions. Highly recommended.

Excellent food served by friendly and efficient staff in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We both had the fish and chips which were excellent. The super chocolate orange tart for pudding was amazing. Would highly recommend and will definitely return soon.

We booked for 4.45 as there was 8 of us and that was the only time they had, and they needed the table for 6.15. One of our party was 10 mins late so we ordered at 5.00. We were told when booking we would have plenty of time to eat all our food so presumably 3 course! We got our food at 5.40 all home cooked so that's fine, but the table that came in after us did get served before us. Anyway we ate, it was OK but my husband had lamb, was asked if he wanted it pink, it was overcooked. It was a good job we didn't complain about that and had to wait for another as we would have had to have it as take out! We were asked if we wanted puddings and we ordered. The lady in charge came and told us we had to leave, after we had already placed our pudding order as they needed the table, so I said does that mean we are not getting our puddings, bear in mind we had 3 children, she told me there was no need to be aggressive. I just asked about our puddings! So we said OK and started to get up. She then came back to the us saying they have jiggled things around and we could stay. We'll if you value your customers wouldn't you have done that before asking us to leave? Very bad attitude and no customer care. Wouldn't go back. This was over £150 too so it wasn't a cheap meal to be treat like we had done something wrong.

revisited again after 10 months, free wifi is working now. the 20% off the main menu during tuesday to thursday. the mushroom soup was delicious. the battered goats cheese was also tasty. the fish and chips were good. treacle sponge with custard was not too sweet. fish goujons and chips was good. booked a table for two on 1:30pm tuesday, the pub was at least half full. the special menu for two was value for money but chips did not include in price, ordered chips £3.50. the steak and ale pie was tasty and in generous portion. the smoked pepper and tomato soup and belly pork was delicious. free wifi was not available.
