The Viking Chippy in North Ayrshire

Picked up a hamburger supper to take away…….Chips were OK but hamburger tasted awful, tried the second one and same awful taste and smell……Walked back to have exchange …..Was told as I had bit into them there was no exchange or refund ? Tearable attitude as wanted them to try and they would taste for themself .

Really disappointed, chips were greasy and soggy, They were served straight away so weren't freshly cooked , the staff were very pleasant

The price alone is dreadful £20.30 for 2 suppers and needing to pay £6.30 to add cheese and gravy to said suppers with a price like that you’d expect it to be half decent but it wasn’t my pizza crunch didn’t have any cheese or gravy on it and the chips in both suppers tasted and felt like they had been dip in the fryer was closer to mashed potatoes than chips if I’m honest would like a refund but was to busy to go back so decided just to bin the stuff instead definitely don’t recommend and won’t be back!

Had memories of this being the best place for a fish supper in Largs. Wondered why it was so quiet but took no notice as it was a warm day. Meals were just awful! Soggy batter on fish...daughter was sick later in the evening after sausage supper and all 4 grand kids left their chips. Never again.

Rancid Fish was served with a "batter" which was soaked in fat which stuck to my box lid when opened. The chips were dark,greasy and clumped together into one big block. The worrying smell of Ammonia wafted out on opening this offensive offering. Would have taken both suppers back for a refund but had to get back to Glasgow for an appointment. Without doubt the worst chippy I've had the misfortune to visit ! Absolutely shambolic !

ordered a white pudding supper and chips the white pudding was yellow inside and tasted awful and the chips wasn’t much better for the price they charge it should be quality food very disappointed much better chippers going about won’t be back

Great service if a bit rushed. Batter on the fish was not crispy at all but soggy and damp. Sausage in supper was also poor Can do much better considering location

Shocking! Having visited many times and always had great food, We were disappointed to say the least, we ordered online for collection, as it said it was a 20 mins but when I arrived staff weren't doing much, no customers in and certainly didn't look busy. When I took our food back to the car and opened it, we were shocked, a tiny fish and a handful of chips in what was meant to be a large fish supper. Although it tasted OK, Needless to say, I doubt we will be back!

Arrived at 20 to 9pm Refused to cook me what I ordered for three people as was closing early. Advertised as closing at 10pm. Won't be back.

The worst chip shop I’ve used. Soggy cold chips and an upset stomach. Plenty other nice takeaways locally so use at your peril.

Always great quality fish and chips. It’s so good we drive 18 miles and eat in car as it is far superior to any in our area. Lovely light batter and excellent fish with never any bones . The chips are delicious and never greasy . Quick friendly service every time

Just purchased one fish and chips from the Viking in Largs and when we got back to the car we were shocked to see the poor quality of the fish and chips costing £6.10. The chips were old and brown and shriveled. The fish was the smallest piece and altogether should not have been sold to us. Unfortunately, we were too far away from Largs to return the goods. Will not return.

Great value chippy, get your moneys worth after a day at the beach. Always friendly and service is quick - do expect queues though as they are a beachfront chippy and do a great supper.

Lunchtime fish & chips.. fresh and crispy batter, real chippy chips. Packed in cardbox boxes and paper. You can order 1 fish with chips or 2. We both had 2, and the portions were big enough to take left overs home. Dog loved the battered sausage. Lovely staff with peaky blinders theme uniforms. Will beback.

hubby and I popped in today for a fish supper ,The fish one fish with a generous amount of chips ,both items were delicious,we will Defo return next time we are in largs.The staff were lovely and friendly too.Well done viking

I always go here with my family when we visit Largs, the food is ALWAYS great and anyone that states otherwise has a problem with their taste buds xD Overall, great food, nice place, always clean and tidy, kind staff.

This box of overcooked breadcrumb-coated 'everything' (apart from the chips) was an absolute disgraceful excuse for a supper. The almost charred wagon-wheel size fishcake (<3% fish!) was economy/saver quality. Squid bites/rings cooked to rubber consistency; some frazzled prawns were thrown into the mix of elusive...

Visited on a Friday night for fish n chips...inside take away is pretty run down looking and one door was boarded up with various bits of wood with large nails sticking out...not attractive or very safe looking. However fish was cooked fresh when ordered and...

Needed a late lunch on a miserable afternoon so opted for fish suppers here. Drove 2 mins down road before opening them up,to find fish was very pale with incredibly soggy batter and an odd smell (not necessarily "off", but very odd - oil maybe?)....

We moved to Canada years ago and we always complained that we could never get Fish and chips as good as we did when we lived in Scotland. The Viking was always our first choice. So when we returned for a visit the Viking was our first port of call!The staff had changed but the fish and chips were still the same. Good to the last chip!

Walked down after a night out and grabbed our fish super. Loads to choose from on the menu, including mushy peas.We ordered fish suppers and they were really yummy.Went back twice more during our stay and had lunch too.The wee girls working in the restaurant are so lovely and polite.The guy who served us in the takeaway section was super friendly as well, really nice customer service.

Went in here and the young boy behind the counter was stood playing with his phone. He looked at me and went back to playing with his phone for a further 5 mins. When he finally managed to put his phone down he served me. But between taking my order. Serving the portion. And taking payment he stopped a further 3 times to check his phone. Pizza was not very hot. More like slightly warm. Very chewy. Chips were tasteless. As if theyd sat there a few hours. I wont go back. There's no shortage of chip shops in largs.

We called into this place for a Fish Supper to eat alfresco on the prom. However we saw people in front of us in the queue being given food that had been prepared earlier. The fish looked like it had been sitting under the heat for quite a while.They were like boards. On seeing this, we made our excuses and went elsewhere.

Called in for a takeaway on Saturday night. My wife had fish and chips and I had a pie supper.

Tenner for a black pudding supper and a sausage supper. Drenched in salt and vinegar and to be honest didn’t enjoy a single bite. Don’t know if it was the fat or just too much salt and vinegar but something just didn’t taste good. Only reason it’s getting 2 stars is because my partner thought hers was ok. Can’t see me going back after this visit.

Visited last night at 21.15 and ordered sausage supper and black pudding supper, what a waste of £10 , black pudding and sausage was not edible as clearly been sitting there for at least a couple of hours as both were rock hard. They obviously lack standards and customer service to think it's ok to rip there customer's off, I will never use again as I only ever get ripped off once somewhere not twice..

Called in here today with my mum,dad and sister. My mother has dementia and I was correcting her order which was fine! When I went to order the guy kept saying I had ordered the same as I was repeating my mother's order which is clearly not what I had ordered he knew what my mothers order was as in front of him I had asked my mum and dad what they wanted. His attitude was disgusting even when I tried to correct what I wanted I quietly told him my mother has dementia but this still did sway his attitude. Finally getting our order it was disgusting the chips were halve cooked and God knows what the funny taste was maybe the oil? Whatever it was by now it was right through the food not just mine but all 4 orders. The fish was cheap and too fishy. We most certainly will not be back even though I can say the price was fine.

This is a great chippy, always great service and food is delicious! Tried a spicy chicken pizza which was very good and chips were very tasty. Highly recommend!

Fritters were fresh and tasty. Batter was golden and crispy would recommend. Portion is 6 fritters. The Pickles a wee bitty small considering they are 30p each. Not value for money

If been twice food cold rushed and not nice. Which is a shame. If they cared a bit more it would be worth it.

Freshly made, 5 min wait for fish, hips plentiful and hot. Very reasonable , clean tidy and good chat.

The best chips in Largs I would say and not any dearer tha the other 5 chippies in the town can be busy and have to wait but worth it

we recently visited the Viking chip shop and the fish and chips were excellent and extremely good value. the staff were really polite and attentive. we will be back again soon.

Visited Largs with my family, nipped into choppy for a wee fish supper by the sea, staff were all over the place, one person seemed to know what he was doing, ordered fish suppers, to say it was a fish is being generous. It was more half a fish and chips, order was short and was overcharged too.

Reasonable sized portions, but not reasonably priced. Largs has many good eateries so there are plenty of alternatives available.

Popped in as I hadn't used these guys for ages and had previously enjoyed the food.

Dropped in Tuesday 29th on way through Largs. Shop was quiet only appeared to be 2 staff on. 1 was on the phone the other flitting in and out back of shop. Eventually came off the phone and took my order only for the lady at the counter to say her complete order had not yet been taken. Oh so she got to finish her order and off he went. I waited a couple of minutes for the younger guy to take my order.

Sorry but 2 stars could be a bit high. Prices are higher than average for a chippy but food is poor. Batter needs seasoning. Service needs cheating up. Prices need to go down. Quaility needs to improve. Oh and when we ask for salt on our chips we mean we would like more than a a few grains.!!!

When the Viking Chippy opened it served great fish and chips, once the got "an award", things went downhill. Small portions of frozen fish, chips pretty ordinary.

Went at dinner time on the Bank Holiday. I never expected a chippy to be our of the most basic items... No breadcrumb for the special fish so had to take the battered one, no chicken for kids box, no straws for the poor cartons of juice in the kids box and no toy for the kids box.

Great chips, one of the rare places one the west coast of Scotland that does white pudding. Good size portions and plenty of choice on the menu.

This has always been a favourite of mine on any visit to Largs but not anymore! Fish supper treat wasn’t up to standard. Chips were just OKAY and fish was the SOGGIEST batter I’ve ever encountered. We won’t be back until it improves!

We had a fantastic dinner from here. Five piping hot, fresh fish suppers. Ate far more than was good for us as it was just too moreish. Really friendly staff too. Engaging, conversational and good with the kids too!

Been a couple of times because it is very close to where I live.the food has been good and staff pleasant.the problem is it's about £1 a supper to expensive, I mean £5 for a sausage supper ???? .not a bad chippie but ginos is definitely better.i will go again but purely for conscience but will not be ordering sausage supper.also why close so early friday/Saturday night when you got 4 pubs within 1 minute walk from you?????

We took our grandson for a fish tea and it was really disappointing. The bread wasn't fresh and the fish was soggy. Chips were ok.

We got a bag of chips which came in a box, fare enough good packaging, but shame about the product inside ie, chips they were soggy and back hett, also got a single fish and thats all it was , a wee skimpy fish, when we go for a single fish we always get 2 fish from any other chippy, it looked liked the 2nd bit of fish from the single fish,

Visited for a late lunch after a day at the seaside. Prime seafront location car park across the road £1 per hour and a pound shop a few doors away so you can buy a drink of pop to go with your take-out as to keep the costs down.

This is a good chippy. Not the cheapest in the world but great chips. You can't beat eating chips at the seafront in Largs and these are good chips !!!

Fish and chips by the sea really tasty great staff and exceptional views to sit and eat, a great meal after a day out open till late so very handy if just coming off train or ferry.

This is on the main street of Largs..next to the pier..There was lots of customers waiting for food but the queue went quickly..as it was rush hour..We got a large amount of chips which was good..and tasted fab too..

We always go to the Viking for there chips so tasty especially when eating outdoors in the sunshine.

after waiting 1hr 30mins and two phone calls later my delivery arrived frozen despite being told an hour into the wait the driver had got lost and that they would be told to come back to the shop and a fresh hot meal would be made to replace the current one, well this clearly didn't happen and to be honest anywhere that does deliveries of hot food should be able to get the meal to the customer in a warm edible state which this order clearly wasn't, also the phone manner and customer service could be addressed like answering the phone with just a hello is piss poor effort, all drivers should have GPS and the shop was clearly told where I live house has been here for over two years, defo won't be back or for deliveries again.

This place used to be good, but it's gone right downhill! Cheeky, grumpy and surly staff. Tried it a few times to get "special" fish and everytime they've "nae breadcrumbs, mate!" A shop, with a supermarket across the street and they've got no breadcrumbs? lol So, we tried the battered fish once, and that was a mistake. Dripping with grease! The chips were OK, but they were also greasy because there were under the greasy fish.

I stopped by the Viking for Lunch. It's definitely not the best Fish &amp; Chips in Largs. I have a holiday home in Largs so I try to go around and try the different restaurants in Largs. This was very average and that is being kind. Don't get me wrong it is cheaper them most of the other chippies in Largs but not the same quality as the new place that opened up The Fish Works. Everyone says that the Viking use to be the best but after trying all of the Fish &amp; Chips places in Largs I would say that the Viking needs to really up their game if they don't want to lose business to the The Fish Works or Blue Lagoon. Not even close to being on the same level.

We had fish suppers and you had to wait to get them cooked fresh which i didnt mind and the staff are very friendly in every way.They were chatting away untill they were ready which i thought was very nice of them to talk away with you all the time.

No pakora sauce (which I have always received into the past) No fried onions (which were paid for) Food arrived 10 min after stated delivery time

2nd time having been to this chippy while on a wee trip to Largs, both times the food and chips have been fab! Both times long queue and waits - however this proves how good it is.

Day out in Largs, opted for takeaway fish and chips from the Viking for lunch. We were not disappointed. The service from the gentleman who served us was really welcoming and friendly, the fish was freshly cooked and the chips were lovely. In short, ten out of ten. Would definitely recommend.

Pizza borderline burnt and much thicker than normal - nowhere near normal quality. Chips were good though.

Great Pizza as always I had one only a few days before this order. Sadly when I opened the Pizza box my paid for double toppings were not there. Not much chicken, mushrooms and onions.

Would give 0 if could for restaurant service as I had to phone up after my delivery got delivered as I had ordered a pizza that had American sausage in it and it doesn't say anywhere on the website that it had BBQ sauce on it , so I was phoning up to actually order a different one and just thought I would mention to the staff that it didn't say on the website , and this was met with a rude response. The girl on the phone was so rude... and I ordered another one anyway received no apologies and they charged me again full price and delivery for a muck up on their end! I also order from here quite often and this had never happened.
