The Victoria is no longer a bar or restaurant, it just offers rooms, which was all we wanted. The lad that runs the place was very friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and tidy, and the beds were really comfortable.

Attempted to eat here on a Wednesday evening for 2 adults and 2 kids. Told just to pick a table ourselves then waited a long time for menus. After selecting we were told we had the wrong menus and were given more menus. After 45 minutes we had drinks but still no food order. During this time we saw a few other tables return almost every dish to the kitchen. One man described the place as fawlty towers! We gave up and paid for our drinks and left. The place needs a good clean especially the dated and smelly toilets!

This place had some very poor reviews in the past, but put that behind you. The new management (owners) have worked hard to bring this place back to life. Can't speak for the hotel part but the restaurant is now well worth a visit, even if only to see the wonderful quirky furniture. The menu is fairly basic, but should appeal to most people because it is not overloaded with exotic fare. Sea food fresh and well cooked. Bar appears to be well stocked. Service pleasant and friendly. There is also an outside patio for those fine weather days. Views of the harbour are outstanding. Toilets are clean, but rather basic - I think they are a work in progress. Well worth a visit to support this new beginning. Good luck to them.

As they say, the joint was jumping on the Saturday and Sunday, great to see the place back in action. The restaurant has had a change of ownership earlier this year. The new management seems to have quite a bit of work ahead of them (painting / refurnishing etc.). Our first impression was not too positive as the entrance area is rather untidy. However, when we proceeded into the conservatory restaurant area, the impression changed. The staff was very friendly and the view over the marina and Tarbert Bay was spectacular. Though the chairs were a bit heavy, they were comfortable and we did not have to wait long for the menus and drinks (Hobgoblin ruby beer <3).On the menu, there were local and pub food-like dishes like Haggis (deep fried), burgers, steak pie, mac & cheese etc. The quality of the ordered dishes was excellent!!! The quantity was generous, enough to feed a man after a hard day's work, definitely too much for a "standard eater". The prices were very moderate, both for food and drinks. In the bar area, there is a pool table and some tables.I can only recommend everyone to ignore the untidy entrance area and try the food!

First impressions of The Victoria Hotel were not good. The exterior is extremely scruffy and badly in need of a fresh coat of paint. The bar area was untidy and cleaning products/equipment were lying around. We were greeted by a staff member inappropriately dressed in a track suit and on being seated in the conservatory reataurant we were given menus and informed no draught beer was available. Having made food choices we were then informed that 2 out of 4 meals were not available. The menu is not extensive and it was difficult to make alternative choices. The service wasn't great and the waitress could do with some customer service training and not just repeatedly say "no problem" when clearly this establishment does indeed have its fair share of problems. The furniture in the restaurant would do with a good going over with the cleaning products being stored in the bar! On the positive side, the food when it arrived was edible but it is not really possible to expand on this view. This place could be so much better situated where it is overlooking Tarbert Harbour. But given that our party and another couple were the only people in the place, it looks like the "new management" as advertised at the entrance have some way to go in order to improve this place.

The first thing that you will see when arriving to the hotel is a sign that tells you it is an award winning chef. There can't be unless we talk about an award from kindergarten. I had fish and chips and the fish was absolutely tasteless and was served with a tartar sauce from Heinz in small plastic wrappings. My boyfriend had meat which he said was very good, however the potatoes was uncocked. The room was facing the back and dark and chilly. I could not open the bathroom door because the bed was in the way. It was clean though and we had a good nights sleep. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the hotel is not pricy in any way.

Unfortunately we were only here for three nights, and would have stayed an extra night if the hotel hadn't been fully booked. The 50 mile day trip to Oban was wasted as the rain fell all day, some eight weeks worth we were reliably told by a number of shop keepers who seemed glad of it. The extra day would have been a bonus for us, more time to enjoy the gastronomic wizardry in the the hotel restaurant. The food was superb. The Langoustines brought to the table demonstrated a display of genius, and tasted exquisite, even if the waiting time was overly long.Another favourite, the mushroom soup, was full of consistency and served in an insanely large soup bowl with side order of French bread, a definite crowd pleaser. The mains too were on the money, the deserts looked and tasted fantastic, my wife can vouch for these, on plates that could have served for trays.Breakfast was full to brimming; melon, cereals, cakes, juices, toast on demand, and the cooked Scottish filler a must on least one morning. The others to try are haddock and poached egg, or melted cheese and ham in a baguette. Excellent! The accommodation is comfortable, our double room with its tiny ensuite, modern furniture, and an extremely comfy bed, hasn't been redecorated since the current owners took over but it is front facing and quiet, despite overlooking the main road. The new sash windows pretty much take care of the noise and the décor is inoffensive. All told this is a hotel full of different interior styles sitting side by side, providing a querky look at the past and an insight into what was fashionable in the day, an enjoyable and welcoming change from the clinical boxed alternatives.

Although the Victoria couldn't accommodate us they rang around the other hotels and b&bs for us and found us a place to stay. The waiter was lovely- really friendly and helpful but what should have been a very simple dish for a seafood chef to do well (fish and chips) was dreadful. The fish was completely tasteless, obviously not haddock which is what we ordered, the tartare sauce was dire and the salad dressing tasted old which made the salad inedible. The position of the restaurant is lovely but it felt grimy. It's not an experience we would rush to repeat

We have eaten here twice now, once last year on my partners birthday in August and again last week. Both visits have been excellent. We stayed on our boat in the nearby marina which is just a short walk along a brand new promenade. The restaurant has great views of the working fishing harbour and is light, airy and comfortable. The menu is varied and has something for all tastes. To start we shared the King scallops (1 each) in garlic and herb butter. They were delicious and we were served fresh, warm bread also. My partner then had steamed chicken breast stuffed with haggis in Tarragon sauce, and I had the home made chicken curry. Both dishes were generous portions, cooked well and full of flavour. The service from a young waiter and waitress was friendly and efficient. We will be returning again!

On arrival we waited at least 10 minutes at the bar while the flustered but pleasant and helpful barman sorted us a table and we stood politely waiting. Had I known my companion better, instead of politely waiting, I would have suggested finding another restaurant. Had I realised that this was an indication of the slow and rather chaotic / shortstaffed style I would have said to the staff that we needed to eat in the next hour as we were going to see a film. Once in the delightful conservatory dining area we were able to order drinks and our meal. Our waitress seemed flustered and out of her depth, needing help to understand and then spell our food order. Our langoustines starter took 40 minutes to arrive - in fact they were squat lobsters with a small dish of crab meat. I'm sure the chef knows the difference but maybe he assumes his customers don't. They were beautifully presented and delicious. We realised with the slowness of the service that unless our main courses were served immediately, we were going to be late for the film, so explained the situation to our waitress. After a few more minutes we asked for the bill which the barman tried to sort out for us at the bar. The chef/ owner came out of the kitchen and in front of his staff and other customers gave us a demonstration of his passionate approach to life, he was offensive and rude, suggesting that we should have known how long it took to eat langoustines and that we should have gone to a fast food place. So it was all our fault then. The barman mouthed "sorry" behind him. I understand their disappointment that our main course was wasted but a little humility from the owner would have gone a long way. I misjudged this restaurant and would possibly go back for a gourmet meal when I have the whole evening for the experience. Pasqual - given the number of similar negative comments on Trip Advisor on a similar theme, a note on the menu to say that "everything is freshly prepared to order and that some delays are therefore inevitable" would set the scene for the slow food that is, for many, a delight. It was a great pity that this meal ended on a sour note for the customer, being flambeed by the chef. The film was good btw.

This hotel is in a lovely position overlooking the harbour. The starters and mains we ordered were well presented, well cooked and couldn't fault them. However when you have to wait an hour for each course you begin to get a tad frustrated. Between courses we were asked if we would like more drinks.... these never turned up. So when it came to ordering dessert out patience had somewhat diminshed. It was unfortunate therefore that it took 1 hour 20 minutes for 2 desserts to reach our table from the time our order was taken. I went to ask the barman why the service was so poor and ask him for the second time where our bill was, he apologised and explained he was the only one on the bar that night and was overwhelmed, so i asked to speak to his manager. When I explained to him the service was rather poor I got a mouthful of abuse saying i was a liar. He was shouting so loud that by this point the entire bar was watching as he repeatedly called me dishonest and a liar and that I am no longer welcome in his restaurant. The overwhelmed barman apologised profusely which made the experience somewhat bearable. I recommend unless you want to wait for hours and are content with no table service whatsoever then you give this restaurant a miss.

Great position overlooking the harbour. Felt like an useasy co-existence between locals and visitors. I was directed away from the restaurant area towards the bar for my meal with no explanation as to why. One hapless teenager was left to serve at the bar and dash into the restaurant to wait at tables, whilst the new French owner put in the occasional token appearance. The lad warmed to his task as the evening went on, however, and ended up as a star-turn multi-tasker! The food was excellent value and the plate came piled high with veg of all descriptions. Clearly not intended to be completed, as the ubiquitous staff member looked shocked at an empty plate! I had to cycle to Oban the next day so it was superb. One thing - the French onion soup may have been authentic but it was not what I would call "traditional" in UK terms (cloudy brown and salty)!

Went to the Vic last night to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Sat in restaurant for first time (normally we prefer eating in the bar) and enjoyed the views across the harbour. The service was very good. Our Waiter had just started that day. He was clearly enjoying his work, had a good sense of humour and we really enjoyed his service. The Sole and Smoked Salmon Roulade with sweet pepper beurre blanc starter was cooked so that it was still moist in the middle and the sauce was subtle, dry to taste and complemented the fish well. The Cajun Chicken and Crispy Bacon and Cheese Salad was pleasantly spicy but not enough to kill your palate for the rest of the meal. The poached Smoked Haddock was again cooked spot on. it was served on a bed of saute potatoes, topped with pleasantly runny yolked poached egg and served with a sweet pepper cream. It really made a cracking mixture of tastes and textures. I opted out of the "haute cuisine" and went for a simple Grilled Gammon steak with Fried Egg, chips, mushrooms and provencale herb topped grilled tomatoes. Seriously unhealthy and seriously enjoyable. It also came with a dressed salad which looked fresh and well dressed, but I don't do salad. The puddings were Breton specialities - a warm caramelised apple delice with vanilla ice cream, and gratin of fresh fruits with a Cinnamon Sabayon. Both of us cleared our plates in record time. The bill for all of this came to £61.00 including a few beers and glasses of the very acceptable house Chardonnay. It made for a surprisingly inexpensive night and enjoyable night out.

Had been 4 years since visiting Tarbert and in the past the food at the Victoria had been very good. 4 of us sat down and the place was busy as the Music Festival was taking place. 4 starters arrived promptly. 2 cullen skenk, one carrot and coriander soup(my wife said delightful) and my bland chicken and black pudding terrine. Now the bad news the mains. My friend ordered langoustines and prawns served on a salad with garlic sauce dressing. He found this woeful, salad soaked in an overpowering sauce or as he described a plate of mush. My fish pie was not much better, extremely small and pretty tasteless. My Friends partner described her gratin as pityful and again a portion that would not fill a child. My wife had scampi which you cant really go wrong with, accompanied with hard as rock dry chips. The waitress brought across a dish of vegetables that she said were for the table? 4 pieces of cauliflower, half a dozen green beans and something else that I cant remember. My main on the menu said accompanied by potatoes and vegetables but nothing else arrived!. We always tip but not on this occasion. £71.20 for not a lot. Really disapointing meal

After venturing south on the Kintyre Peninsula to Campbeltown along the west coast and then driving along the west coast back to Tarbert, I was definitely ready for a refreshing drink and a rewarding meal. The Victoria Hotel did not disappoint. I wanted to make certain that I tried as much local seafood as possible and that I did. My compliments again to the chef - the King Scallops were wonderful and the mussels were done perfectly in a yummy broth. Prices in my opinion were very reasonable for the quality of food that was presented to us. Despite the rain the atmosphere was lovely and warm and the service was very welcoming on a cool, damp day. I realise that seafood is the staple in Tarbert, but restaurants must realise that not everyone eats this and in this day and age they need to offer far more interesting food for vegetarians than this. Very disappointed!

Fantastic staff and lovely steak pie. Compliments to Jay the waiter for his welcoming manner and communication skills and one of the chefs Martyn for asking me if my meal was satisfactory. It was. More than.

CaleDonia Coffeehouse and Bistrolocation-icon31 Marine RoadFrench

Had a wonderful dinner here on September 15th. The bistro is lovely, the staff was excellent. The real prize here is the food though! A small but diverse menu where every meal and dessert is delicious. The owner/chef has incredible culinary skills and deserves high praise! One warning though...If you are interested in trying this place out MAKE A RESERVATION! It's small, fills quickly and with good reason.

Lovely fresh food served by friendly, helpful staff. Great gluten free options available and staff showed good understanding of food allergy/intolerance issues.
