The Usk and Railway Inn in Powys

I will start with the good points:The food!! The food is what is keeping this place going. All of our meals were very well presented and very tasty. The Lady serving us was very friendly and polite.The bad points:Whilst we were sat outside having our meal we were surrounded by foul mouthed, shouting and smoking punters which ruined the relaxed evening meal we were hoping for. When going inside it felt as if the whole place came to a stop and would stare. There was a little bit of a mix up with our booking for the evening meal which meant we waited a little longer than normal for our food. The photos online gave the impression it was a quite country pub but in fact you are right on the main road. Overall I would rate this 3.5 out of 5. But the food swayed it for me. Hats off to the chef, you’re keeping this place alive!

We went on a Friday evening, busy with (safe numbers of) locals and several people eating. A little bit of a wait between courses didn’t spoil the excellent food. Chicken curry was tender and tasty. Lamb chops proper. Friendly and caring owners. We will be back.

Great little inn and perfect for exploring the Brecon Beacons. Spotless clean good sized room with a very comfortable bed. Had evening emerald which was really nice and clean plates all around. Pics on street view and would recommend.

We came here for dinner to find excellent pub food, together with a great atmosphere, all in a pub garden with hillside views!

We went here for one of there new Thali curry evenings. Between us we chose the chicken, lamb and king prawn curry's. They came with all the extras you would expect nan bread, poppadoms, onion baji, mango chutney. All of the food was excellent. Very friendly staff, great service and the pub itself is spotless. We are looking forward to our next visit. Thank you Linda & Andy for an enjoyable evening.

Nothing was too much trouble for this friendly team. Lovely spotless ensuite rooms. High quality beds and linens. Excellent food. Cant wait to go back when they are fully open.

This is a lovely hotel, the owners were super friendly and made us feel very welcome.. I fell in love with Daisy the resident Border Collie, she is beautiful...The rooms were very clean, spotless to be honest, (a big thumbs up to housekeeping) The beds were super comfy, and the most amazing shower of all.. We had food in the evening and this was also delicious, breakfast too, we all really enjoyed.!! All in all I can't fault this Hotel, just wished we could of stayed longer.. We will definitely be returning...

Friendly staff, amazing food. We ate here 2 times during our stay to Sennybridge. Did book for a 3rd time but we went out for a long day and got back to late. The tables were all covered with umbrellas as it rained. Very dog Friendly. The staff were so helpful nothing was to much trouble for them. Even asked for onion rings to be added to our order and the chef happily done them for us. Would highly recommend this pub.

Booked the Usk and railway Inn for one night for my wife's birthday and Easter because it looked like the sort of place that we like. Weren't sure if we would even be able to go, thanks to the lockdown but things opened up enough. It's a lovely place and the service was excellent, especially when you consider how difficult it is with the restrictions in place. The bar and restaurant were closed but we were able to choose from the menu and eat in our rooms. They made a great effort to make sure it was as good as it could be and the food was fab.Same arrangement for breakfast and it was just as good. It is a lovely part of the world with amazing walks on the doorstep, Brecon just up the road and views in every direction. Big recommend and we will go back when things are more open and we can sit in the bar.

I've stayed at the Usk many times, & everytime it just gets better & better.. all the staff are very welcoming, The rooms are extremely comfortable everything you'd expect from a hotel room.. complementarity tea & coffee, TV little bottles of shower cream/shampoo a bar of posh soap fresh towels the showersare out of this world, they make my one at home seem inadequate they certainly give you a damn good wash! The food has always been fresh and well prepared, the breakfast is gorgeous.. the Usk is a jewel in the Welsh countryside.. I can't wait until I'm down there again.. lovely views of the countryside..

We visited and admittedly were advised a funeral wake was taking place. The service was good, Linda was excellent.I enjoyed my Whitebait, and the Chicken Breast in Creamy Leak with saute potatoes was fantastic and my wife had a spicy vegetable curry.With no disrespect to the owner or the funeral party - it was a bit loud and stopped us from staying longer for desert.I would go again though, as it was clean and tidy, good food and staff were fantastic.M!chael

Popped in for a meal this Thursday with family, excellent! Seafood Mac and Cheese isn't first thing on my mind to be honest but it was absolutely spot on . A side of chips did top it off for me . My wife and daughter's meals were equally as good Very varied menu and I had difficulty in choosing , nice problem to have I guess Local to us so a return is certain.

Delicious meal and in a Covid safe environment. It was great to go out for a meal and to feel comfortable that the management and staff had taken all the precautions to make diners and themselves safe.

My husband and I have just returned from a 3 nights stay at this wonderful little place in the Brecons which is surrounded by beautiful views. The owners Linda and Andy are very welcoming from the moment you walk in. The room was very comfortable with everything we needed. Great breakfast with lots of choice. There’s no need to go further a field in the evening as the food and bar area has everything. Amazing food- compliments to the chef. The inn is situated close to lots going on e.g walking, pony trekking, caves etc. I will be recommending to others as it’s great value and hope to stay again in the future. Thanks to all the staff for a memorable stay which we both felt safe in during this ‘Covid’ time. It’s clear they all work very hard.

Excellent food. We loved the lamb chops and lasagne. Huge onion rings! Beautiful cheesecake. As important was the high standard of social distancing safety. The staff all wore masks. There was an effective one way system. Everything was cleaned to the highest spec. Highly recommend. We felt safe, comfortable and well fed. We will definitely return, probably tomorrow.

Lovely friendly staff, tasty food, great ale. My favourite pub ! Wish we lived closer!Very tasty beer battered cod & a beautiful special , chicken in lemon & corriander on a potato rosti, washed down with a delicious pint of Sea Fury. Mixed berry Cheesecake certainly finished the meal off nicely!

I stayed here Monday to Friday through work, the moment I walked through the door Linda and Andy made me feel welcome and more like part of the family than a guest. Breakfast orders are taken in advance and there is a fantastic choice available. While stopping here I also used the bar for my evening meals and again there is a fantastic selection to choose from including a specials board. The food is all cooked fresh and the chef was wonderful at swapping items out for me to deal with a dietary requirement. I would advise if the sticky toffee pudding is available you give it a go as I did wonder if I could steal a vat of the sauce to take home. The bar also offers a large selection of gins and I went with the barman’s choice for my time at the inn, finding the Japanese gin a particular favourite. I would advise that you book a table well in advance as the inn is very popular but definitely worth a visit.

I had a lovely lunch with a friend today. A very friendly welcome and good food with well kept real ales. The pub was absolutely spotless with good Covid safety measures in place. Would definitely go back and check out the gin list!

We stopped off on our way to New Quay, and were so glad we did. The CV19 compliant pub/restaurant was well run and friendly. We had the beef stroganoff special and cod and chips followed by a brownie and honeycomb sundae. All of it was really tasty.

This is a small family run business, the owners are very friendly and very accommodating. The rooms are clean and very comfortable! Really enjoyed our couple of days stay here! Would definitely come back and I would recommend it!

Absolutely lovely place to stop for lunch on our way through Sennybridge. What a pleasant atmosphere, warm and welcoming. Even with the covid restrictions in place they couldnt do enough for us. Even provided an off menu side! Toilets were immaculate which is always a top priority for me. Visit here, you won't be disappointed! Spectacular view from the beer garden!

We’ve been regular diners at the Usk and Railway Inn for ages and always enjoyed the food. However, tonight we were just blown away by the quality of our Valentines dinner. Fantastic new chef - can’t recommend her highly enough.

What a lovely pub/place to stay!! The Landlord and her team were so friendly and also have a tri-coloured Border Collie so ours was right at home. We had a family dinner for 11 people in the evening in the restaurant and the food and service were excellent. The bedroom was spacious, clean and comfortable with a dressing table, good size bathroom and hanging space. Breakfast was delicious and overall the stay was a lovely one. Will definitely be back.

We called in on our way to Bristol airport for lunch and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. The chef really knows what he is doing and produced exceptionally good food-perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. I had the venison and my husband had lamb cutlets. Both were excellent.The service was extremely friendly and efficient. Unfortunately the real ales were not available because the barrels needed to be changed, but we will be going back and hope to be able to try the beer then.

Booked a Sunday lunch for five adults and three children following a visit to Dan yr Ogof. The mean was excellent with very generous portions - very good selection if vegetables. The staff went out of their way to provide appropriate vegetarian dishes for three of the party. Highly recommend for the food and welcome.

Quite by chance we came across the Usk and Railway Inn whilst on a day out. We parked right outside and went to check if it was open and whether the dog could come in with us. It was and he could...in the bar. We had a lovely welcome; the ale was good and the food excellent. A really good menu with a choice of home made dishes. I had a pork and apple pie ( delicious) and my husband had surf and turf from the specials menu. Such amazing value! Perfectly cooked sirloin steak with garlic prawns on the side....in proper garlic butter. A real treat.We will be visiting again for sure on our next day trip from the Forest of Dean.

We stayed three nights. Nice room. Hot shower. Plenty of tea .coffee and biscuitsWe had food every night. there was a special on most nights and on Thursday there was a Indian buffet .Breakfast was freshly cooked and was good but with a few quirks there was preserves on table but no toast no was there fruit of any kind but I am sure if we had asked we could have had

This restaurant was a pleasant find, a little gem. The choices were varied and numerous: a specials board, a set menu or one could order off the main menu. Our main meal was well presented, it was tasty and the side dish of vegetables was gorgeous. The dessert choice was difficult but once a decision had been made it didn’t disappoint.The toilets were spotless. The waiting staff were friendly and welcoming. The total bill was a pleasant surprise. This is definitely a place which we will be returning to.

We called in on spec for a meal whilst returning from holiday. This family run pub is full of fun old railway signs which make entertaining reading! The service is warm and friendly, and the home cooked food comes in mighty big portions! Absolutely just the ticket (to continue the railway theme !).

We came for an evening meal and I'm sorry to say we will definitely not be returning. One drink was delivered to the table with a tuft of dog hairs stuck to the rim of the glass. There was a dog obviously living at the premises with apparent access to the bar area. The food was well presented but quite ordinary and bland. There was an insect floating in the vinegar bottle. Overall we left feeling a bit queasy and dissapointed. I would not recommend.

Driven past many times, finally got round to booking lunch here. A very pleasant interior and atmosphere. Spot on Sunday dinner, lovely pudding with a good choice of ales and wine. Will definitely return!

We stayed here for one night after spending 4 days on the nearby canal we were revived with a warm welcome the room was clean. We decided to eat and all the food was great and cheaper than we would normally of paid

Come across this B&B; just by chance. Called in to see if any rooms where available, Spoke to the manageress and she had a room, I promptly booked in. After settling into my room I went downstairs and booked into the restaurant. After a short wait I was shown to my table, the food I ordered was excellent as was the service. Will be going again

Had a lovely few nights stay. Staff were welcoming throughout our stay. The food was lovely and very accommodating to our food preferences. The room was a nice size and the shower was amazing!

A great pub and diner, the food really is excellent. A menu to cater for all and a specials board keeps up the variety of choices on offer. The wife had the Garlic Mushrooms for starters whilst I went for the Whitebait which were prepared in crunchy breadcrumbs , served with a small salad and a mayonaise dip. The Whitebait was so good I could have had it as a main course. The Garlic mushrooms were served in a delicious creamy sauce . Jackie had a crisp white wine and I had a pint of one of the guest ales 'Rev'(always a good selection and you can have a taste sample to help you make your mind up). For a change we both opted for the same main course and went for the Duck Breast with traditional orange, a side dish of vegetables (carrots, cauliflower and red cabbage) and also for a change , we went for chips (lovely). We didn't opt for a sweet although sorely tempted (we were full up). All reasonably priced and in a traditional, clean pub setting. Popular with the locals and definitely worth a look in if you are passing through

Found this place on the way home, lovely little find too. Staff were really friendly and welcoming, the place itself was lovely and clean. The food was all piping hot and a lot of it, couldn't finish it all even though it was lovely. Will call back here.

We stayed here for one night during our Beacons Way hike in April 2019. We had a terrible couple days weather wise and they were so flexible – we were able to check in early on the day when low clouds drove us off the hills halfway through our walk. We were wet and cold and it was lovely to be welcomed into a warm and cozy pub with amazing food! The next day the weather service was calling for hail and potential lightning on the hills so we had to skip that walking day – the owners were so flexible and happy to give us a late checkout which was very welcomed. We’d highly recommend the short (about 15 minutes) walk to visit the old yew tree – over 5,000 years old (oldest in Europe) and one of the top 50 great British trees.

A good variety of food to choose from along with a specials board. The food was very tasty and the portions were really big. Friendly service. Will definitely be back if we're passing through again.

If you like little traditional village pubs with a friendly and accommodating service then this is the place. Can be a small drive out fo your way depending where you are in Brecon but is well worth it. All the positive previous reviews are spot one.

Having descended Pen Y Fan we were seeking food to warm and fortify. This Inn was welcoming, the food was on the table quickly and the fish was perfect. Recommended!

We went for a roast at the Usk and Railway Inn loved it so much that we went back for their NYE party too!!! We felt really welcomed. The gin and local beer choices were brilliant. We didn’t book ahead but the staff managed to squeeze in thankfully!!! We had a vegan with us and the staff really went all out to ensure she had a good meal. The NYE party was great fun too!!!

Brecon has gone terrible for decent places to eat and we always struggle when we go home to visit family. We happened to mention this when we called in an ice cream parlour for an ice cream and the lady serving said that if we didn't mind travelling 15 mins out of town she could highly recommend this place and so glad she did. The food was excellent we both had starters and mains and each dish was faultless. The pub had a lovely homely feel to it with quite a few locals at the bar. Good choice of beers with decent prices on both food and drink. Service was friendly and efficient. This will be a regular place for us now every time we are back in Brecon - only shame that it isn't in Brecon itself.

We stopped unexpectedly at The Usk on a long and tedious drive from Cardiff to Manchester. Mr B had Roast beef and Yorkshire Pud whilst I had the Dover Sole. Lovely vegetables and great portions. The chef at The Usk really knows his stuff and when we do this journey again next year we will be going back.

We visited this pub twice over a rainy weekend and were very impressed with the food and the service and the friendly atmosphere.

We ended up here twice after camping nearby in the rain! The welcome and service could not be faulted, nothing was too much. Our dog was allowed in the bar, which was also fine for eating. The range on the menu was good with normal pub food as well as some slightly different dishes. Food was fast and for most of the dishes incredibly good. I would most definitely recommend this place to eat.

Friendly polite chatty staff spotlessly clean, we had beef dinner Yorkshire pud and all the trimmings plenty of veg all fresh, gravy which is my thing was plentiful and A* so nice to have proper gravy. Everything was well presented and hot. I had dark choclate tarte and cream just gorgeous for afters. Choclate kick just perfect. Would highly recommend paying a visit. Price very reasonable good choice of 1 course, 2 courses or all 3 excellent will be returning soon to try out week menu.

A group of 15 went for a meal and all had great meals. Nothing was too much trouble for them, the food was excellent and the atmosphere was very friendly. Great night had by all. Would call in again.

A place with a warm and all the persons serving have always a smile on their faces. The food is delicious, freshly made and reasonably priced. The bar is well stocked and they do real good deals on single malts.

Been here a few times now and no drop in customer service. Owner is very friendly and is always ready to have chat with you. Staff very friendly and the service was prompt. Food was of the usual very good standard.

I have been in a few times in the past and have always had a very tasty meal and this time was no exception. We were greeted as we walked in the door and the pleasantries carried on throughout our entire visit. We asked for the music volume to be reduced as one member of the group finds it difficult to hear with a lot of background noise and that was done immediately, so thank you for that, saying that the music brought back a lot of memories, at least the first CD did, not quite so keen on the more modern music!! All in all the whole meal was very enjoyable and plenty of food. Yes the Hot chocolate, my friend said was very delicious and knocked spots off her previous top of the pile and that was just the no frills chocolate! We will be back!!

Beautiful Sunday lunch. Cheesy leeks, carrots and sweet pots mixed with white pots. I had the beef with huge Yorkshire pud and the gravy was to die for. Stunning. And the dessert was excellent had the apple and blueberries crumble with hot custard. Stunning and would recommend to everyone. Have already. We will be back. 10/10

We have eaten here several times before and always enjoyed the food. Arrived Wednesday evening and both ordered a chicken balti half and half. You could smell the stale oil that the chips were cooked in before the meal arrived. Tasteless chicken and very greasy poppadoms. The meal arrived very quickly was the "curry" frozen and defrosted, very watery. Not an enjoyable experience. The only plus the staff were friendly.

Welcoming pub (one of the locals was so friendly it was getting irritating, but that's not a fault if the pub). Dog welcome in the smallish bar area. Food was okay, nice gins available, but only one bottle of ginger ale.

After a long journey from Liverpool we arrived late and were in search of some food. Originally we were headed for another place (recommended by our host) but after finding it was closed we found the Usk & Railway and what a find this was! As soon as we entered we were met with a really friendly, warm welcome. There was plenty to choose from on the menu and specials board, including a few veggie options too. We were told all the food is homemade and when it arrived we were impressed - it was a good portion size and really tasty! We would happily recommend a visit here.

What looks like just a nice pub on the outside turns out to serve great traditional food as well. Friendly welcome and fast service with a menu that would suit everybody.

We popped in for food after a day on-the-road and had not only a very warm welcome, but a fantastic meal to boot. Delicious, home-cooked pub food was just what we needed. Good-sized servings at a reasonable price.

We stopped off for food after a long day at work. The staff were very friendly and hospitable. I had lasagne and my husband had pie of the week. Both our meals were delicious and we were so full we didn’t need a dessert. Highly recommend for quality and price

This was were we ate for the time we stayed in Wales which was 3 nights, the food here was lovely and the bar staff and there customers were very friendly and were very willing to help you, the pub it's self was very relaxing with a wood burning fire in the corner, we talked to some of the locals about the surrounding areas. Very friendly bunch of people would highly recommend eating here as the food was A1.

We had contacted the pub ahead of time and we were glad to find out that they are dog friendly. But when we arrived, we were told that our dog couldn't enter into the restaurant and we had to stay at the tiny bar area which had 6 tiny tables, all were occupied. So we had to go elsewhere. I find it quite hard understand why dogs are aloud in the bar but not in the restaurant when the exact same food is being served and it's all in the same area. Unfortunately they lost out on our custom of at least £40, which we spent elsewhere.

Had a one night stay here and had a comfortable relaxing time. Owners and staff very hospitable, good selection of food at reasonable prices and didn't disappoint. Room was very clean and comfortable. Hearty breakfast.

Have been going past this place for a long time travelling from Wolverhampton and decided to stop for Sunday Lunch today .

Sublime flavors blend, fresh and local ingredients, warm and juicy melt in your mouth feel, we were smiling and closing eyes as we savored our meals! Amazing tastes, artfully displayed, fresh cut edible flowers decorating, what more can we say. We were delighted that Jeff Fry the cook secured mussels for us at lunch as a special treat, and even more surprised that he prepared a special appetizer of cockles to start the feast. Thank you so much.

Después de visitar el pub regularmente en el pasado nos inclinábamos para usarla de nuevo con nuevos propietarios a cargo. Por desgracia, a pesar de comprobar reserva para 8 no tenían constancia cuando nos presentamos y tuvimos que esperar a ser clasificados de una mesa. Intentaron servir la comida equivocada dos veces antes de hacerlo bien y luego el salmón estaba recocida. No tarde en el Usk peasterrible y ferrocarril en Sennybridge. Uno de nuestro grupo se hizo enfermos después de parte de un desierto servidos con crema. Otra cena tenía la misma budín pero con helado y no sufrieron efectos perniciosos.

Stayed here following a trip to the wonderful Penderyn Distillery; before a hike the next day in the Brecon Beacons. It is well located for access to walking and the nearby attractions. Located in a small attractive village nestled by the river - the pub itself from the outside does not ooze charm but once inside it reveals itself. Open plan - with a snug bar and large restaurant. Very welcoming owner keen to ensure we had a restful and enjoyable stay. Extensive menu - home made curries, grilled meats and generous portions. Good quality beer selection. Wine selection more limited but good value. Accommodation was spotless. Rooms were a good size and recently renovated. Clean and modern. Beds incredibly comfy. Couldn't fault it.

Randomly stopped at this pub for lunch whilst passing by on our journey to Snowdonia and it was well worth the visit.The pub itself is lovely. Has a warm, welcoming and typical country pub atmosphere to it. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Unfortunately I cannot remember the name of the lady that waited our table, but I do remember her saying that she was originally from my home town of Bath, England! She was very friendly and gave us some great advice regarding local places to visit. The menu itself was what you would normally expect to see in a pub, which was exactly what we wanted anyway! The food was well cooked and decent sized portions provided. If I am ever in the area again I will certainly be stopping by again.I would definitely recommend.

We arrived early to get drinks and were told our table was ready when we were which was great, no waiting around! When we got to our table I was a little bit surprised at how close it was to another table which was occupied, I felt like I was sat with the other couple! The selection of main courses was generally what you see in most pubs, I went for the lasagne which was delicious. Unfortunately the dessert menu wasn't very diverse, I'd say 90% of what was on there was chocolatey, which is great if you're a lover of chocolate like I am, however not everyone at my table liked chocolate, so there was very little to choose from after ruling out all the chocolatey desserts. We weren't waiting long for our food considering it was a busy evening. The staff were friendly and very accommodating.

My family and I visited this Inn for a meal.Good menu for adults and children. Very pleasant staff. The Landlord greeted us and made us feel welcome. The Landlady was very pleasant. The meals were great, as were the portion sizes. In my opinion the prices are fair.If we visit Sennybridge again will will most certainly re-visit the restaurant here.

Stopped off here randomly while exploring Brecon today. Amazing service, food and atmosphere. We were offered a seat outside, in the restaurant or bar.I'm not a big fan of Sunday roasts but this was amazing. Lots of mouth watering beef with just the most beautifully cooked veg.Honeycomb Sundae for desert was the best! Very reasonable prices.
