This was my third visit to the Tudor Room at the fabulous Great Fosters; my first for lunch. From meeting and chatting with Istvan, the charismatic Hungarian manager in the bar, through to dessert, the experience was sensational. It can only be a matter of time before a second Michelin star is added. For £34 (including £10% discount for membership), you will have the best four course lunch in Surrey in one of the most beautiful locations. You will be assisted in your choice of wine by the very best sommelier - who even remembered the wine I chose on my last visit several months earlier! My choices for lunch were canapé, scallops, pork and the cheese selection (selected by Istvan), with a fabulous glass of sharp yet not too dry Vouvray. All exceptional. Make no mistake, this is Waterside Inn style fayre in a more relaxed setting. Highly recommended!

This was my third lunch within the hallowed walls of Great Fosters, with three guests. The set menu in The Tudor room, with three choices for each course, is £38 per head. An aperitif on the rear patio, with canapés was the perfect thirst quencher on a hot summer's day. Istvan, the charismatic Hungarian maître d' was quick to take our order and Norbert the equally charismatic Hungarian sommelier was on hand to recommend appropriate wines by the glass. On this occasion I had the crab hors d'ouvres with avocado, tomato and almonds – beautifully presented – and sensational. Norbert recommended an Austrian wine; sharp but not too dry. My turbot and gnocchi main course with broad beans and clams was equally good, accompanied by a fine Californian wine made from three grape varieties, full-bodied and reminiscent of a Rhône Chardonnay. Istvan made a selection of five wonderful English cheeses for me; interestingly juxtaposing a sharp Somerset cheddar with a gentler one from the Isle of Mull. I could go on! My three guests were equally thrilled by their choices. Once again, a memorable experience. Portions are small but with an emphasis on extreme flavours with perfect wine accompaniments. Service is impeccable... Norbert even remembered my choice of main course and wine from my last visit weeks before! £65 per head including wines and service charge – great value for a Michelin starred restaurant. Sadly Istvan is leaving to manage the Ocean Restaurant at the Atlantic Hotel in Jersey, but he introduced us to the new maître d', Akos, who also hails from Hungary. We wish them both great success in their new roles!

Bluebells Restaurant & Bar

22/06/2018: A lovely place for a sophisticated lunch. Great menu, ambience and staff. OK there was a large noisy and drunk Ascot party but it was still a very good lunch.
05/07/2018: This restaurant is a good place to go, particularly for the set menu as this is great value. The menu is very ambitious whereas the food didn't have the subtleties of flavour that led me to expect. The service is good and there is a nice environment, however, there is quite a pretentious feel so it is not as relaxing as it could be.

The Estate Grill at Great Fosters

15/06/2018: As occasionally regular visitors for lunch or dinner, we had the opportunity of an overnight stay so were able to enjoy both dinner and breakfast in the Estate Grill.
21/06/2018: Yet again this hotel and restaurant did not fail. Service quality of food and staff friendliness was just right. Thanks again for an amazing time.
