We booked The Tickled Trout for a party of 15 at lunch time and sent a pre order ahead of time. We were seated upstairs in the private room which is lovely and very spacious. Our drinks order was taken when we arrived and arrived quickly, the food followed shortly after. The staff were all so friendly and accommodating and the food was great. Honestly couldn't fault it at all and would definitely visit again.

Good food and service. Booked for Sunday lunch so had table reserved but I think there were a few walk-ins who were accommodated. Very popular with dog owners and most were well behaved on the whole. Recommend the roast and their Yorkshire pudding was probably best I'd had eating out.

Just had a very strange dining experience. Was really impressed when we arrived. A very warm welcome and very happy with the table. All looking good. So I ordered the crispy beef teriyaki. Really good sized portion and so tasty. I was slightly concerned that if this was the starter how big would my main be. I shouldn't have. It was really small. 1 very small fillet of sea bass for nearly £30. Don't get me wrong it was really good but it was far too small. And then my little one asked for a taste I gave her a fork full which was a quarter of my fish. So I order desert. Raspberry savarin. The savarin hadn't been soaked so was really dry and heavy. Bill came and my 2 large glassed of Rosé came to just short of £40. I clearly didn't check that properly. So it started out with much optimism and just slid away. Edit. I did raise the food issues at the time, especially about the savarin. The response was 'sorry, I'll tell the chef'. And that was that. The wine was my fault as I should have read the list properly. That's the problem of being visually impaired. I would return but would choose more carefully.

Recently retired and moved to the area and I have been trying local pub grub out. When my adult son and I were celebrating the day before Mother's Day (to avoid crowds) we booked here on impulse after a day of hiking. Oh my goodness; the food was simply amazing. What a find! It felt very 'Gastro Pub' dining and well above all the standard of previous places I have tried. My son raved about his beef starter and we also, thankfully, ordered the Tarte Tatin (needs 45 mins booking) for dessert. I loved the truffle chicken; how do you make it taste SO good? Loved the mash too. Maybe I would have liked more veggies as I was very hungry. My son loved the amazing gourmet burger and I helped him eat some of those fantastic big chips. Slightly too salty for my personal taste, but it did not stop us eating them. Back to that Tarte Tatin; simply the best ever dessert I have, honestly. The balance of caramel glaze, soft apples and buttery pastry was incredible and we loved sharing the plate. This was quite exceptional. I hope this is a regular on the menu and not just the Specials. In total, we had a celebratory meal with the best food and ambiance. Excellent and attentive service from young staff (but everyone looks young to me) and they really represented the care and attention to detail we found in the food. My son does not live in this area and commented that the food here was better than anywhere local to him in Buckinghamshire. I'd rather dine out less often and go here for a treat, It was slightly more expensive than other pub grub, but way better in so many ways that I am happy to seek out quality rather than quantity. We will return and I plan to recommend Tickled Trout to everyone I know. Really exceptional food and beautiful surroundings. I am so impressed and we have found our new favourite place to dine.

I tried to book this place a few weeks ago but their website was down. I contacted them but no one came back to me. I probably should have trusted my gut because now my guts are suffering. Not only was the customer service questionable (& by the way they make you pay for that as mandatory!) but the food was delivered quicker than my microwave pings. Whilst you could say that is a good experience, the amount of oil on my food was creating a separate gravy of its own. The drinks finally arrived to drown the taste away but the food is definitely not worth the money. Shame, as has such potential. The place was pretty empty although they’re very strict on where you can sit too. I wouldn’t normally leave a review, so please note this was for valid reasons.

Great venue, was ok but could be better. We had to pre-book as we were a party of 8, not sure of this is normal, as there is still the same amount of tables in restaurants, and do tables of two have to pre book? Anyway, we sat down, and main course came out within 10 minutes. We wasn’t asked if we wanted any starters, straight into main meal, missed out on 8 starters.! meat was perfect, but was expecting a side bowl of veg or something other than what was on our plates. and the dessert was the same, very small portion. Would have expected more for the price. Bit disappointing.

Each dish showcases a chef who knows flavors and how to bring out the very best in every bit. I absolutely loved it. We were a table of 5 everyone enjoyed their meal. The staff were friendly and attentive. The restaurant / gastros pub has a very clean, cosy atmosphere with understated sophistication. I really am thrilled to have this gem so close to Chesterfield. I rarely review restaurants these days because we don't eat out much unless we are on holiday. Overall, the experience was good. My only real complaint was the lack of a wine list, which meant we ended up paying an expectedly large amount for 4 glasses of wine. The food was good, nearly excellent, and only missing that mark by small faults. The pizza base was doughy. It just needed a little longer cooking. Everything else was delicious and filling, but some dishes lacked refinement given the price. The fish and chips were great, especially the house made chip shop curry sauce. 😘 The halloumi starter tastes fabulous, but it was just lumped in a shallow dish with no garnish. I know this is picky, but I'm not complaining so much as suggesting improvement. The service was good and I am sad that it wasn't busier because it is one of the better places to eat in the area. Having spent two weeks in Looe, Cornwall this September, I can see what they are aspiring to be. They just aren't quite hitting the same levels. Don't not go because of this review, you will have good food, just ask about the drinks prices. 😉

Very well appointed venue - a cross between a Gastropub and restaurant. Service was excellent - attentive but not intrusive. As for the food the highlights of what we had were the spiced cod scotch egg which was absolutely fantastic (nice and spicy mayo with it) and the Derbyshire pie. I suppose the only thing I might quibble would be that the sides portions could be a bit bigger but that doesn’t detract from a lovely relaxed evening. Would go there regularly if we lived a bit closer.

Great welcome, didn't feel out of place. Prompt service and menu was well laid out. We went for scotch egg starter and halloumi starter. Both excellent. For mains the truffle chicken and special sea bream, again both perfectly cooked and very tasty. Service throughout was very good, never had to get attention of anyone as the girls were always around. We was in and out in 70 mins.. had a expresso too. First time visitors after hearing a good few things about this place Initial thoughts as we walked in was a nice clean are and restaurant, decent sized tables, chairs could do with a clean Before I continue I’ll say that I do understand the area of the place it’s situated in, however… You cannot charge £8.95 for a quarter skillet of chorizo and humous and 2 tiny pieces of bread, it’s scandalous, and simply a rip off. The pea and ham soup my friend couldn’t finish as it tasted so bad, so I tried it and had 1 mouthful and couldn’t eat anymore of it (it takes a lot for me not to eat something) The mains came and was ok, however I wouldn’t even say it was lukewarm, all mains were cold. The only thing that came hot was the pigs in blankets Moving on to the sides - £5.95 for 4 florets of cauli cheese? Come on, £2 for extra gravy? Its comical Head chef must be living in GP heaven, as a whole it all seemed a tad overpriced for what you got and not served hot. Basics in a kitchen. had better carvery’s We aren’t ones to make a fuss on check back, the waitresses were nice and service was ok, we aren’t ones to ask for items taken off of the bill etc but definitely won’t be returning.

Hi jacked when paying my bill at the bar with a 20 % service charge . Why is this not mentioned anywhere on the menu or in the pub ? . I always leave a tip of 10% . This 20% is the cost of another meal !! If you’re not making enough on your product please put the cost up ! If you’re not paying your staff enough please put their hourly rate up !! Please do not stealth tax your customers. The meals the four of us had were excellent and my pie was the best I’ve ever eaten but I will not be eating here again unless this issue is addressed. Thank you for your response to my issue .But you havent addressed the automatic adding of the charge to the bill . If we were a party of 10 then i could understand a charge and if you stated somewhere before we ordered that a 12% charge was to be added I wouldn`t have assumed with my math that it was 20% .So please see my point about the charge being a stealh tax on your food

We booked our lunch for 1pm on Sunday 22nd September. We arrived at 1pm and were shown to our seats near the clock at Table no.3. As our table was a good arms length away from our seat, and we were on a bench seat my son and myself decided to pull the heavy table nearer to us. I didn't expect furniture removal was part of a meal these days. Anyway sooon a waitress served us with drinks and took our meal order. We then seemingly went invisible. The people at the next table, who came after us, were served, and had virtually finished their meal, and still we remained invisible, other people were also being served. We were still invisible. About 40 minutes passed and I called over a waitress. She said they were very busy and that the people next to us had just ordered a main meal. But we didn't argue, and mention others who had arrived later, and also been served well before us. Eventually, we were served a starter at 1.50pm. The main meal came and my wife remarked that her Roast Beef was not very warm. I had the Roast Pork and included on my plate was the most liquid mashed potato I have ever seen, it looked like some form of sauce. The Pork was not as tender as it should be, and the Bowl of Roasts was a misnomer, not only tiny, a Very Small Bowl would be a better description, and it contained what appeared to be scrapings from the bottom of a roast pan and broken potatoes. The green vegetables were properly cooked. The gravy was very heavily salted. So after our experience we decided....Not to stay for the sweet course. I'm afraid your standards are just not good enough. Finally: How can you justify charging £4.50 for a glass of still water? Yes it had ice in it, but it was water. LP

Last minute booking, but they were able to accommodate us, food excellent, good value for money with lovely friendly staff. Wee bit of a wait, but not excessive. Lounge area dog friendly, even for my giant boy and waitress brought Sam his own water bowl and offered us free dog biscuits from the jars by the dog water station. Woukd definitely visut again next time we're in the area

We turned up just after 12 on Saturday to a reasonably quiet restaurant, so thought great not too busy. Well that’s where our particular experience ended, grabbed our drink at bar and went to sit down, menus brought over and that’s it. Waited a good...

We were out walking and decided to stop here for a rekkie and a small simple sandwich or similar. Unfortunately, because it was Sunday, the menu was built around roast dinners etc and we couldn't get what we hoped for. It does all look very clean and nice, the atmosphere is very informal compared to , for instance, the nearby Peacock. The small dining room is in a conservatory / orangery. I was surprised to see that on a hot day, direct access from the bar to the picnic benches outside was through a patio door that a table for two was directly just inside of. The poor lady sat with her back in the open doorway must have felt quite exposed and getting too much closely passing foot traffic. I noticed they had gone later, and I hadn't seen any food arrive so I wouldn't be surprised if they'd gone somewhere with nicer tables available. The outdoor seating is picnic benches on uneven flooring cordoned off from the car park. They don't have a garden area. I think this would be a lovely place on a cooler day for a hot meal, and it was very nice for a casual drink.

Service impeccable, my wife's food very good indeed. My chicken burger, well could be renamed as salt, salt and more salt chicken burger. I have eaten chicken burgers world wide, NEVER had one so salty.

Went here for my monthly treat after fasting for 4 days so was expecting a lovely fish to wake me up. I didn’t realise my fish was going to be dryer than the seats when the beer I ordered spilt all over the table and chair! Ended up with a beer battered fish after that. The interior looks like the inside of a fishing boat which adds to the atmosphere of the establishment, too bad it also stank of fish.

Chris and his team run an excellent gastro pub. Great service and top notch food. We had the blade of beef and a chicken dish with truffle. Both dishes were excellent with well thought out accompaniments and flavours. Ingredients are well sourced from ‘food hero’ mostly local suppliers (the fish comes up daily from Cornwall). really good wine list too with the Coravin system which enables the Tickled Trout to serve some superior wines by the glass. We will be back when in this part of the world.

My husband and I called and had a bite to eat on Wed 16th Aug. The food was fantastic, the staff were amazing, nothing was too much trouble. So very pleasant and welcoming. This used to be my Auntie and Uncles pub many years ago, so it was great to see it being so successful. The prices were really good and as for the service charge, they all deserved every penny. Thankyou for such a fantastic experience.
