Went to this lovely country pub with some friends for dinner. The pub is in a perfect setting whether it is in summer in the garden or winter in the cosy dining room. I had the local venison and it was delicious; perfectly cooked. And the Sticky Toffee Pudding is to die for. If you find yourself in the area; this pub is not to be missed.

I was told this was a a delightful country pub, having grown up in the countryside and having moved to the city I thought all wonderful, friendly and welcoming pubs had vanished. This is a treasure as it is the archetypal British pub serving great food and fabulous bitter. The liver and bacon was perfectly cooked and served with nicely crisp broccoli, the service was friendly and the pub had a lovely warm atmosphere. I would recommend this pub to anyone who doesn't want plastic food served by staff with artificial smiles. I truly great British pub.

Hands down the WORST pub food I’ve had in my 57 years. I had the steak and kidney pie which arrived with a large crust, no side or bottom and a few pieces of steak and kidney. The vegetables were soggy and microwaved and my dog gratefully received the atrocious ‘meat’. My daughter’s sausage and mash tasted chemically , onions sloppy and overdone BUT the sausages were OK. T’wife had duck salad which was just thrown together with no care or presentation. Pudding of sticky toffee pudding FAR too sweet - try Cartmel- and my second lager tasted of just cleaned pipes. AND we were only brought eating irons- NO salt , pepper, brown, red, mayo. I’m still shocked at what I paid for this absurd disaster. Give me a reply and I’ll double your turnover…… Have to say I LOVE the setting and the drive there but jeeeeeeez. How hard can it be?!!!!! Brakes have a lot to answer for…..

When the owner manager is as tuned into and as motivated as the publican at the Three Horseshoes it makes a huge difference. The attention to detail in every aspect is superb. Local to the heart but welcoming to trade from outside the region this in the best pub in the South Downs. Food and drink excellent, an array of carefully selected locally artisanal food products add to the sense of this place being integral to the village and the area. If there's a pub with a better view of the Downs from the outside sitting area I'd be amazed.

The reason I am only giving two stars to this lovely pub in a great location is that they don't have vegetarian or vegan option on their menu. I just cannot understand this nowadays when everyone is eating less meat for health, animal welfare and environmental reasons. I was astounded when I looked at the menu when I arrived. My only options were a cheese ploughmans or a concoction suggested by lady behind the bar and created from an avocado and bacon starter without the bacon and a roasted peppers and duck main course without the duck but with some extra cheese. As I was hosting guests and didn't want a fuss, I just opted for the latter but the result just was a greasy mess. I felt sorry for staff as they must be asked for vegetarian food all the time. On the plus side the view from the enormous garden is terrific, the roses in the garden are georgous and well tended, there are lots of outdoor tables, the staff are friendly, the service is good and the indoor section is quaint and cosy. (and PS My meat and fish eating guests all enjoyed their main courses, thank goodness!)

Oh, this is how a pub should be, shame we live a fair distance away. Glorious views, fantastic roses this year, and tables spread out all over the place. Wonderful if you need a quiet space or have reactive dogs that don't particularly want to be near other dogs. Cannot comment on the food other than the ploughmans as that's all we ate. Just what you want from a ploughmans and an excellent sized chunk of cheese for the cheesists like me! Inside looks delightful and traditional, but again we only popped in to order and collect beers. Imagine an oval plate, approximately 25cm across. On this plate there are three withered, dry looking, miniscule lamb "cutlets". Next to them is a small heap of bland sliced potatoes with cream. The rest of it, upon this sorry plate, is a sea of rapidly cooling gravy. This is how the meal turned up. With some pretty insipid vegetables served in a side dish, presumably to give you the impression that you were getting more for your money. It cost £18. It was either for this reason, or due to the poor quality of the meal that I had a sore stomach afterwards. I suspect both. Meanwhile, my partner had a dish of overcooked sausages and lumpy mash for £12. The staff were pretty cranky, but they'd almost certainly been on their feet for far too long, with little or no respite. Not their fault. I give this place one star, but for the view, which was good, but hardly counts, as I would have happily exchanged it for a good meal that didn't feel like a rip off or mess with my guts.

I’m struggling to award one star for the attitude of the staff on duty today. A beautiful walk in the countryside ended in being made to feel like criminals as a result of their faulty card machine . Rather than them sorting this out, for the price of a pint and a spritzer we had to wait 20 minutes before being able to take a sip….. the inference being that we were without funds. We solved the issue by paying by bank transfer. I’d suggest raising their game and going on a customer facing skills course and learning to smile. Maybe find another career as they all ( with the exception of a younger colleague) appeared care worn and fed up. We will not be returning to The Three Horseshoes as a result of the surly staff and accusatory atmosphere …. There are plenty of welcoming pubs close by.
