The Taste in North Hertfordshire

1st time visit. Walked in and straight away one of the waitresses came over and asked if they could help. Ordered coffee and cakes at till and our order was bought to our table. The muffin was huge and did not disappoint. Excellent service.

After making the effort to walk to the cafe at 8:15 only to find the cafe is closed for private event. No mention on their website or facebook. And no apology! Very poor customer service.

On arrival we were immediately greeted and welcome by the team who rearranged the table and chairs so they could accommodate all 6 of us. Great range of reasonably priced food to cater for all ages and tastes which was promptly served. The milkshakes were a particular highlight and not too expensive. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a quick meal with the family or friends.

We popped in with my husband and child for a quick snack. We were amazed by the quality of the service. The lady was so attentive to everyone needs. We felt so welcomed. Many thanks !

Popped in here as nephew (12) was hungry , very friendly staff, prompt service and large portions , nephew has decided this is his 2nd favourite cafe ever as they have lots he likes on the menu and amazing milk shakes

It's not the sort of place where you'd happily hang out all morning, but then I came here because of all the rave reviews and because I really fancied an omelette! I was not disappointed, either. It came with perfect chips and a nice little mixed salad, too, which was a bonus. Very friendly service, excellent value for money.

This is a lovely cafe. We stumbled across it when wondering around Hitchin. I visited it with my 9 year old daughter and her friend. The cafe was warm and clean with very friendly helpful staff. The food was excellent, truly delicious with many options and all reasonably priced. The smoothies, milkshakes and ice creams look amazing - we had 2 smoothies, burgers and chips and ice creams and they were all excellent.

I have been coming here with my boyfriend for nearly two years. Always our cafe of choice, such welcoming friendly staff and the food is incomparable. Love love love this place and thoroughly recommend to everyone.

Usually, when we go to Elite, it's sometimes busy and packed with customers which is a good thing. The food prices are affordable, food itself is top notch, but the only negative side I have is the waitress. A few times she got our orders wrong, and she repeats the meal or drink three times, and I repeat and she shows her me the writing pad. One time I ordered a chicken wrap with no tomatoes, I repeat a few times, shows me her pad to tell you she's written down like I said before, and comes back with tomatoes in the wrap. Lucky the manager came in took the mean off my hands and was able to sort our the problem, which I couldn't be thankful for. Language barrier isn't my concern at all with the waitress, is just a lack of concentration when taking down orders that is the problem.

Wow! Tasty well cooked food. Nicely presented. Eggs cooked to perfection. Beans served in separate portion - nice touch! Bacon and sliced avocado with poached eggs on granary toast - fantastic! Full English type breakfast - amazing! This Café is a local treasure.

We ordered the number 1 and number 6 from the breakfast menu and the food turned up with tea and toast included in rapid time. Very hot food, very pleasant little cafe and friendly service too. Recommended. Visited 11th December 2020.

We are regulars in here anyway. The staff always smiling and know what we want when we sit down. So very relieved that we can still order for delivery. Well done and thank you! 🥰

Nice lunch on a rainy visit to Sainsbury’s. Very wide menu. Good Covid safe procedures. They had the QR code up for the Covid app even though it’s only last Thursday it came in. We’d mooched around Hitchin market and been round the square and Brand street and Bancroft in the rain. Many eateries closed. All the fast food places full of grammar school children queuing. Purely because we’d left the car in Sainsbury’s car park we came back and liked the look of the place. Service good, food excellent. We’ll come here again on future visits to Hitchin Market.

This is a local cafe that does a range of food - from fry ups to jacket potatoes. It's not fancy, but the food is delicious! It's so clean inside, the staff are so friendly and the portions are a decent size. I can even get a delicious gluten free sandwich to take away with a coffee for under £5 - which is certainly surprising these days! Great value for money!

I have eaten in Caffe Elite quite a few times pre lockdown and the food is always amazing and the staff are great and very welcoming. I have also ordered via just eat over lockdown and again food was amazing. I've also ordered and collected two afternoon teas and they were delicious and very good value at £20 for two people. The second one was for mine and Hubby's anniversary but I had forgotten to order before the day but this was no problem for the guys at Caffe Elite I ordered in the morning and it was ready to pick up at one o'clock.

All food freshly prepared, beautifully cooked and the delivery service is excellent, whatever you order it is 10/10

I discovered this lovely little cafe on facebook during the lockdown period and am gutted i didnt know about it before! The staff are all soo lovely, food is soo easy to order through facebook and the food is outstanding, theres soo much range; from breakfasts ( which are my personal favourite ) to lunch and dinners. I cant wait for the cafe to open up its seating area again so we are able to go in and eat! Would definitely recommend and will carry on ordering and eating from there even when the lockdown is over!

Ordered today nice polite staff lovely food everything perfect delivered within 25 minutes. We will be ordering every week from now on.

Me and my partner ordered through deliveroo. I had the roast dinner with chicken it was amazing such a generous portion of meat vegetables and both mash and roast potatoes love the fact the meat veg and potato comes separate from the gravy so it isn’t soggy which is what I worried about getting a takeaway roast. The delivery was fast and food was piping hot. I have returned for the lasagne which was also amazing. Will definitely return for a roast again very soon!! 5 star.

My wife regularly goes to this gem of a place. We decided to get a takeaway Sunday roast, beef and Lamb. The two meals were cooked to perfection and at a very reasonable price. The service was spot on even though it was only a pick upCarry on your fantastic service and in the friendly manner you have always done

Ordered a delivery breakfast from Caffe Elite after reading great reviews on facebook. We were not disappointed. We ordered and paid over the phone and our breakfast arrived 40minutes later. It was all brilliantly cooked, hot and delicious! Thank you for our wonderful food during these strange times! We’ll be back soon!

Lovely cafe, with a vast range of menu choices at very reasonable costs. The owners are attentive and polite and nothing is too much trouble. They obviously have their “regulars”, which I think is a good sign. The cafe is clean and spacious.

An excellent little cafe. I always have the big breakfast and can never fault it. I can’t eat certain food items, so they always replace them with something else or add an extra portion, always cooked to perfection. The staff and owners are friendly and nothing is too much of a problem - even proving open the door for me as I’m a lady of a certain age having hot flushes!! A great choice on their menus. I thoroughly recommend going.

Friendly, good value for money, massive breakfast, spot on location, only downside I found was the lack of a good instant coffee! Not keen on ‘fancy’ coffees however it’s a minor in the grand scheme of things Will definitely return

Visited for breakfast on Sunday morning after Goggling 'best breakfast in Hitchin' - which it was! Good menu selection, great food served in a spotless environment by friendly staff. Highly recommended.

Cannot say enough how fabulous a place this is to eat.....fabulous food, plenty of choice and the friendliest and most helpful staff in Hitchin! Love this place. Almost a weekly visit when taking my elderly mum shopping At Sainsbury’s. Fantastic service, very clean, food is great and very well priced.

What a lovely cafe. Spotlessly clean and shiny. Staff very friendly and attentive. Self service and waited as you like. Eat in or takeaway. Had bacon and egg sandwich. Delicious. My partner and l have eaten in this very busy cafe many times. Always met with great hospitality by the owner and served promptly even when they are busy.

Got sat down and was a bit busy but we got noticed and said he will be a minute . We ordered our drinks and got given them . We ordered our food and got too us within 20 minutes and we got our food . Well presented and enough on plate for the value I paid , it was a lovely big Jacket potato with lots of cheese and coleslaw on the side and salad . And daughter had the 8 chicken breast Bites (chefs Larder ones I presume) with Fries and a Frankfurter . In all a lovely meal. Chef brought out the meals and was very clean and tidy . Which shows they think of there presetention !

This year I have decided to try and support independent businesses instead of the big chains. I had been impressed by what I had read recently regarding their amazing work for the local community over Christmas so decided to have breakfast there, and so glad I did. The staff were very friendly and the choice on the menu was huge. Breakfast was lovely, tasty, filling and good value. Will certainly go there again.

Not knowing the area, my wife and I needed to find somewhere to eat when visiting Hitchin. We decided upon Caffe Elite, next to Sainsbury's, as it looked light and airy, clean and tidy, with a number of customers who appeared relaxed and comfortable. We were not disappointed. The café/restaurant is indeed spotlessly clean, the tables well lit, the staff attentive and friendly, and the menu wide-ranging. We were served quickly and efficiently, the food was clearly freshly cooked, the quantity was just right and it was of good quality. Fabulous carrot cake for afters too! It appears we got it right first time. The prices were reasonable and the "restrooms" were small, but clean and more than acceptable. If we are in the area again, we will not hesitate to go back.

OK, well I am not an Eccles cakes expert but these were fantastic. We only dropped in for coffee mid-morning and really enjoyed it. The ambience is a bit functional but the table service is friendly and efficient and we would definitely come back when we next return to Hitchin.

I reviewed this little place some time ago and I keep on going back whenever I'm in the area. It's my preferred place for a quick snack in Hitchin. It's situated right next to the Sainsbury's Supermarket, so there's a lot of footfall. I think it's more popular now than ever before and rightly so. The couple running this are very friendly and their service is personal and professional. The food arrives quickly and doesn't disappoint. Tables, floor and serving areas are kept very clean and tidy. There are even a couple of newspapers available for you to browse through as you wait and eat. These folks work very hard to please and provide good food and service, so please support them. I will carry on doing so.

We had breakfast on a cold Saturday morning in February (a full English and one of the healthy options of eggs with avocado) The food was fresh and tasty, the staff was very welcoming too. Let’s support our local, independent, family owned businesses!

Been here a few times now and it's always been good. The waiter is very friendly and accommodating, there's a wide range of food, and you get generous portions. Not to mention the food is delicious too! It's a great location being right next to Sainsbury's. Me and my Mum love coming here before we shop, it's our go-to cafe!

This super little cafe next to Sainsbury’s was new to me but has apparently been here a while! A very friendly greeting from the staff, very comprehensive menu and open every day. I just had delicious coffee initially but went back after for tea and cake as they were so welcoming! Sat outside in dear little courtyard in the sun to enjoy my food which I couldn’t finish and was immediately brought a take-away box - what wonderful service, will definitely be going bak soon, many thanks x

This little restaurant/coffee shop is situated right next to the entrance of the local Sainsbury's supermarket, so I guess it attracts a lot of passing traffic. It serves basic snacks and drinks, but it's done with a smile and the service is friendly and efficient. The food is well served and you really feel as if the staff care. I've been very impressed on each of the occasions I've been there and will no doubt become a regular visitor when in the town. There are numerous places to have a snack or a coffee in the town and this one is a little off the beaten track and not visible easily from the main drag. However, do take the time to find the place. You won't be disappointed.

Although they offered to make what they could of what they had - this was limited to a baked potato or chips & something. Luckily 7 yr old was happy with a bowl of chips & I had an all day breakfast, which was quite nice. Doesn't look much compared to standard pub all day breakfast, but adequately filing & tastier.

My mother always said that breakfast was the most important meal of the day, The Taste provided me with a breakfast that set me up for the day, superb quality ! Thanks to the team

Great palce for coffee and cake, breakfast rolls are really good and the lunches are very nice. The staff are always friendly even when they are run off their feet.

Me pilla un par de cafés temprano (8:00) aquí un par de veces a la semana y siempre disfrutar del gran servicio y charlar un poco de luz por la mañana. El servicio es rápido y muy amable y el lugar es siempre muy limpio y brillante. Cuando necesito una opción para llevar comida, producen sándwiches y ensaladas muy sabrosas magnífica - Precios están a la par con similares en Sainsbury's (al lado), pero la calidad es mucho mejor! También se sirven comidas y una variedad de deliciosos pasteles y dulces. Fácil de recomendar.

The food is great and the staff friendly and accommodating, on top of that everything is reasonably priced, the hygiene level is as good as it could be and the service second to none; what more could you ask for?

Whenever I'm visiting this area my Sister and I always make a point of visiting The Taste for breakfast. Lovely atmosphere, warm welcome, great food at very reasonable prices.There cakes are simply delicious as well for afternoon tea. Give it a try you won't be disappointed.

I normally pop in for a tea with friends due to time, this time however, I had time to stop and eat, I wasn't disappoint . The whole selection of food looked fresh and tasty it was hard to choose !! In the end I decided to have the coronation chicken sandwich and Victoria sponge cake. The sandwich was so full of chicken it was almost a meal and not a snack, and it tasted as look as it looked. The cake finished of this visit, just so fresh and tasty. The staff were so friendly and helpful, I was also given a loyalty card. I know for sure that I will be back soon. Well done The Taste. Ordered a fairly simple breakfast. Muffin with bacon and egg, muffin with bacon and mushroom, muffin with just bacon. Only 1 out of three correct! Egg on all 3. Charged for it as well and no offer to refund. Poached eggs overdone; and cooked in a gadget thing. Cheap ketchup. So many better places in Hitchin

We both had an all day breakfast, mine veggie, Hubbie thought his sausages were very bland, my veggies ones were good. Very clean and tidy.

Nice atmosphere with friendly staff and dairy free options for our daughter. Very different in style to its sister café Taste Buds but the food is really good quality and the coffee is really good too. This café is exactly what was needed in the position next to Sainsbury's providing somewhere nice to get away from the shopping.

Whilst on a business trip last week I had stopped at a pharmacy in Hitchin. On asking for a recommendation for a coffee and bite to eat at lunchtime I was directed to The Taste in a small unit behind the "high street"just by Sainsbury. It was light clean and airy and the food was excellent from freshly filled sandwiches or prepared omelettes to cake and a good range of drinks. Thoroughly recommended.

This is a bit off the beaten track in Hitchin but definitely worth seeking out. Delicious cakes and all very reasonably priced and more importantly, freshly made. So much better than the many chain coffee shops in town.

Absolutley love this place. The food is all freshly made on the premisies. One of the staff bakes the amazing cakes. Light meals are available and the tuna sandwich is just great.The staff are very nice especially the two girls that have been there since it opened, charlotte is lovely.They are happy to alter dishes to suit the individuals needs.Well worth a visit and i can recommend the TOFFEE CAKE.

My sister and I wanted a quite lunch to discuss some things. Went into a local change and the music was so loud and it was very dull inside so we left and found Taste. It was clean, quiet music and the food was all home made and "Tasty" like their name suggested. Staff were lovely and very efficient too.l Will go again.

We come here quite often. Even my 4 year old loves it. He especially loves the animal lunch boxes they have there! The staff are always friendly, and the food is really good. Find find much to fault

Visited today for breakfast. Everything freshly cooked to order and served hot. Especially tasty crispy bacon. Very good value.Staff friendly and efficient. Good to be offered tea in a pot, rather than often happens in restaurants where the only option is a teabag in a cup. Will definitely return. Probably in the afternoon as the cakes looked particularly good.

I have been having breakfast here every week for several months now,and have to say all my meals have been an excellent standard,without exception!The restaurant,cafeteria style,is super clean and fresh and the girls are great at customer service.Always smiling and asking if your meal was ok.It is situated right next door to Sainsburys,so in an ideal position for a meal,or drink before or after shopping.There is an outside terrace with tables and chairs and in a sun trap area.Lovely for people watching while enjoying something to eat or/and drinkIf you come in to Hitchin I thoroughly recommend you try it out,you wont be disappointed,I assure you.I ,for one,cant wait to return next week for breakfast before wondering around Hitchin,the Town of my birth.I wish the owners every success in the future of their business!Barrie Neville.ps.I am reliably informed that their meal of the day,bubble and squeak with a runny egg on top is to die for!!

Love this Cafe, I use whenever I'm passing through after visiting Family. The Staff always greet you with a smile, there courteous, friendly and the food freshly prepared every time and so tasty, fabulous choice to. Being next to Sainsburys is great, easy parking, great for picking up essentials after eating, before continuing my journey home back to Notts. Do try you will not be disappointed, if your looking for good fast service, great food at very reasonable prices then this is the place, trust me.

I had heard many good things about this cafe so decided to try it myself.It's located right by Sainsburys so is probably popular with shoppers. It is clean , spacious and easily accessible with a buggy or disabled walker. The food is freshly cooked to order and it's seems that breakfasts are a speciality. I have to say I probably wouldn't go back as I found it lacking in atmosphere. But that is just my opinion and I know there are many who would disagree.

I eat here several times a week with work colleagues. Staff are fabulous, always friendly and happy to help. Food is delish. This has to be one of my favourite places to eat in Hitchin.

I have been eating at this delightful restaurant over the last several months on my bi-weekly visits to Hitchin.The restaurant is pristine clean and the food served is freshly prepared,delicious and so very reasonably priced.I have to say I have NEVER been disappointed in any meal I have had.I note the restaurant now opens at 7am,which for me is great as I am a very early visitor.I commend this restaurant to everyone,you definitely wont be disappointed!

Great cake always available. As a mum in Hitchin it is always nice to find clean changing facilities with lots of space. Staff are always friendly and help out with carrying teas etc when juggling a pushchair.

I was out in Hitchin and so decided to give The Taste a go after seeing the Facebook post about Charlotte & her team! I was not disappointed! I went for there All Day Breakfast and at £4.75 it was great value for money and delicious! I will definetly be back as I didn't quite have room to try there coffee and cake deal! I'll definetly be recommending The Taste

We visited the taste for breakfast yesterday, and I have to say, it was outstanding. Breakfast freshly cooked and served hot by our waitress Bronagh who's smile and attention is a credit to her. Compliments to the chef, we enjoyed every bite and could not find fault with cooking or service or indeed the pricing, very good value for money. Keep up the good work, we will definitely visit again. A big THANK YOU.

Visited last week with daughter and small grandchildren. Good children's menu with flexibility. They enjoyed their food. My daughter and I had the all day breakfasts. Lovely scrambled eggs. Bacon cooked well as neither under nor overcooked. I couldn't finish. We enjoyed it. Helpful pleasant staff. During our meal, they came and checked all ok which it was. The interior had previously put me off as more supermarket cafe style but will visit again as lovely food, cooked and presented well. Only issue, please offer an apple juice option. Not everyone can drink orange.

Have visited a number of times (in a group, with family and as a couple). The food is always consistently amazing and such reasonable prices. The staff are friendly and helpful. Service is very good - checking how the meal is and efficiently clearing tables. Have always ordered the all day breakfast which is fantastic and good quality. Being next to Sainsburys, it is easy to park nice and close. A great place to go.

Came here for a mid afternoon drink and cake with my mum and I was impressed. Very clean, friendly staff and love the location and how the shop opens up onto a terrace area! The prices were competitive too. The clotted cream had a 'skin' on top due to not being fresh and store brought but was thats the only negative. I would come back here. Well Done The Taste!!

Since its opening The Taste is the only cafe/restaurant in Hitchin that I visit on my trips to Hitchin; the food is delicious, very reasonable priced and the Service is excellent, Lovely friendly atmosphere I've had the pleasure of some lovely lunches and also afternoon teas with a great selection of homemade cakes, and snacks.Would highly recommend it to anyone passing through or visiting Hitchin you will not be disappointed. Without a doubt has to be the best cafe in Hitchin I wish everybody involved with this brilliant place every success.

Very good service from friendly staff, handy location and clean surroundings. However, my bacon sandwich seemed sparce of bacon, only two rashers were found and these were very very crispy. Perhaps for the price (the granary bread was lovely) three bacon rashers would be feasible and nice moist bacon to enjoy?

The Taste has become my twice weekly breakfast fix on my trips to Hitchin,the Town of my birth!Be it the breakfast sandwich,the scrambled eggs on granary toast with two rashers of best back bacon,of the all day brunch,all meals are cooked freshly by Charlotte or Bronagh,with impeccable customer service.This is a new venture for the owners,Charlotte and Charlton,but they have got it spot on!!The food is delicious as well as the espressos!!I wish them every success in the future of this delightful restaurant!I will be back on Friday for my next breakfast fix!

Clean and airy atmosphere. Good choice of food; not just tea and cake but breakfasts, lunches (hot and cold food). Courtyard is a suntrap so fantastic to sit in shirtsleeves in early March. The owner Charlton is ex army logistics so knows a thing or two about producing good tasty food! My cafe of choice in Hitchin!

Had a breakfast sandwich. I thought I had to choose between sausage, bacon or egg, but no, you get all 3 in your choice of white or granary bread and for the bargain price of £2.75. OK, cafeteria style isn't really my thing, but I can't fault the service or the food for the money.

My first review, in December, 2014, seems to have got ‘frozen’ and I cannot get it past my ‘pending’ list.It was titled : “The Taste: Excellent food and service in good town centre location.”Therefore, I was pleased to have to return recently, and start again.I cannot recall the details of my previous visit, but I am delighted to give ‘The Taste’ another excellent review again.These premises are fairly new to this historic market town, and ideally situated just through a covered walkway from one of the town’s major roads, towards a large supermarket which has its own large parking area.‘The Taste’ is bright, airy and spacious, with gentle background music.The menu (including children’s) and price list is clearly displayed outside.Service is quick and efficient from the very pleasant staff, and the hot meals and other hot and cold snacks are delicious.Access is safe and easy through wide glass side doors; ideal for those using wheelchairs or having children in pushchairs, etc.There are plenty of tables inside, (about 12 seating ‘four’ and two seating ‘two’) and a few tables for ‘four’ outside, for when the weather becomes warmer !An ideal place to relax and refresh after a busy hour or two ‘supermarket’ shopping.

Popped in for lunch. Between the four of us we ordered soup, a breakfast sandwich and a Big Brunch.The meal arrived quickly and everybody enjoyed their food. The coffee was excellent!The staff are very friendly and always happy to help.

I've had the pleasure of visiting this gem of a place a few times and each time although busy the Service is excellent as is the food and very reasonable priced. A great variety of homemade cakes, good selection of snacks and the meals are all freshly cooked. Lovely friendly atmosphere created by the owner Charlotte and her girls. Nothing is too much trouble we hope to visit again when in the area. Would highly recommend to anyone passing through Hitchin you will not be disappointed and it's easy to find, right next door to Sainsburys and good parking very close by.

My partner and I have visited here a couple of times for lunch during the week when we've been lucky to have a joint day off, and I must say the food is really tasty! The portion sizes are great, and the food has been great.The service is amazing, Both times we have been served by a lovely young lady with dark hair, who when we came back remembered us, and what we had before, She is very polite and made sure to check how our food was. Also the decoration is nice, and very clean.Be sure to check out this little hidden gem!

I have been using this restaurant for breakfast over the past few months,and have to say it has been a delightful experience!The food is freshly cooked by the co-owner,Charlotte and is so very reasonably priced! Very near the Sainsburys ,so is also good for people watching.I wish them every success in the future!!

This little gem is tucked away near Sainsburys and is well worth a visit. A warm welcome is given by the owner Charlotte, very good customer service, very clean and well laid out. The food is delicious and VERY COMPETITIVELY PRICED. Would recommend to all my friends.
