Visited the tap House at lunch time and made very welcome, the place was very busy so was glad we prebooked our table. We chose to eat off the carvery menu (one or two courses available),4 types of meat to pick from,5different vegetables plus many more plate fillers. The main course was very enjoyable to eat and then was followed by a tasty dessert. The price for the two courses was less that €9, a very reasonable price in todays standards there is a fair range of drinks available to suite most peoples needs, a place we will be visiting again

Whilst having frequented this eatery on several occasions the food has always been very good albiet the very young slim female servers only giving you minimal portions of vegetables?? and everyone having to ask for more ( like oliver twist)But the male carvery server was extremely abrupt and disrespectful to us when we simply asked if one of his staff could kindly carry our elderly disabled mothers plate to the table for her, for he became extremely agitated and angry, snarling retortedly that his staff are busy doung other stuff!! So much for the friendly family atmospheric experience, I asked him not to speak at us in this malicious tone & at one point thought it could escalate to fisticuffs??Even if he was having a bad day you do not verbally address your customers in this manner!Needless to say how disapointing. upsetting & belittled we felt, so much so we will never darken thier doorway again.

We were going to be in this area so booked a table for last Sunday after reading good reviews about this place. Mmmmm Upon arriving in the bar area we seemed to be invisible and was not acknowledged by bar staff who seemed to be more interested in putting glasses away. After what seemed to be quite await we were served with our drinks and ushered to our table in the restaurant at the back by a lady who I think finds customers somewhat a hinderance. Not being a regular at this establishment it felt all a bit disorganized. The queue for the carvery stretches between tables of eating customers, you are served all of your food by the staff so it may as well be plated up in the kitchen and brought to your table. The food was ok, homely cooked and plenty of it. Its quite clear it's a busy place but not a place we will be returning to anytime soon.

My wife popped by here this morning. She was greeted by friendly staff and came home with two plates full of piping hot carvery food. Also, note that while we did not eat in, the place had a warm atmosphere and was very busy. The quintessential Sunday lunch venue. We had the famous steak & ale pie, along with all the trimmings including the Yorkshire pudding and gravy. The food was on a disposable platter wrapped in foil, with the gravy coming in a separate container. The portion sizes were generous and the food was delicious! So if you are out and about looking for a cosy and comforting Sunday lunch, or if you are of the opinion (like me) that carvery represents the ideal takeout, then I wholeheartedly recommend!

Wanted to visit as a large family to the pie night on a Wednesday. Half our family are either vegetarian or just prefer the healthier veggie options. I called to ask if they could accommodate I spoke to a lady who said if I called “two weeks” in advance they might be able to get a small veg pie sorted!!! I couldn’t believe it. It’s not rocket science for any half decent chef to rustle up a simple veg pie or even keep a few in the freezer. In fact it’s easier than meat ones. Very poor customer service indeed. They should accommodate everyone’s tastes I wasn’t asking for anything unusual - not these days. Their loss we won’t be visiting and will be dining elsewhere. Just about everywhere now caters for veggies. Very Poor indeed.

The staff were friendly and polite. The food was mediocre. The day we went they didn’t have chicken or turkey and the beef was pretty red. The potatoes were lumpy and just overall not a nice meal. I left over half of it. They only give you one yorky and one stuffing ball. Shame. It would have been a new favorite as it’s pretty close.

My daughter booked for us to have a celebratory birthday carvery for my Sons birthday today. Table booked for 3pm, arrived at 2.50 waited in bar for the rest of our party to arrive. (Fire was roaring and absolutely jam packed, nice place I thought?)5 adults and 2 babies under a year old. 2.58 asked a waitress if our table was ready, she said we're just getting it ready now and would we like to wait in the bar for a few mins. No problem, got a drink, chatted decided we were hungry so at 3.15 we went to ask AGAIN if our table was ready. Once again told it was being prepared and could we hold on! We loittered where we were. 3.20 we were seated, waitress disappeared. We thought she had gone to get menus so we waited, 10 mins gone past and we wondered what we were supposed to do so we called a waitress over and asked, she said "oh yes, you just go up and get your carvery" oh ok, off we trot stand in queue , food looked yum but was a bit miffed that the price of the carvery was 10.95 but you couldn't help yourself good in hand sat down to eat, my partner who was served after me. His meal was tiny compared to mine but he's to polite to say anything. We all had wondered why there had been no table check and no waitress had asked if we wanted more drinks.... Hmmm finished food, two went for a smoke and one baby off for a nappy change. Just before they disappeared we asked for a pudding menu which arrived and was put on the table and told what puds were no longer available. Whilst 3 of my party were still away from the table the waitress comes back and says "are we ready to order?) I explained there was just two of us at the mo and that they would be ordering puds on their return. Waitress then tells me we would have to order puds and eat them in the bar!!!??? It's not very often I'm speechless but then I've never been chucked off a table in a restaurant before????? I asked her if she was joking to which she replied "sorry, you only get an hour an half to finish your meal" at this point I asked her what the time was, 4.20 she says. I then point out that we'd only had an hour?? She said they needed to prepare the table for the next sitting.... I'm still dumbfounded even now!!!! I asked her to call the manager please. Lady comes over, I explain all this, she seems 'SO' bothered so I ask her for the manager above her! Next, appears a waitress with the bill, we'd been charged for 7 carveries!!!! Off I go to the find the senior manager... Explain what has happened, again doesn't seem particularly bothered, I ask him to rectify the bill, taking off my partner's tiny meal!! Two attempts later they got it right. We left walking past two snickering waitresses..... You know, we read the reviews before going which were half and half but thought we'd give it a go. I would never have bothered complaining about the poor waitress service, lengthy wait to be seated, tiny main course and lack of information we would have booked later if we were told there was a time limit! Minimum amount of time we spend eating out is about two and half hours usually. None of this would have been an issue until THEY WANTED TO THROW IS OFF THE TABLE TO EAT OUR PUDDINGS IN THE BAR!!!! I've worked in hospitality and customer services for many years and wouldn't dream of treating ANYONE like this.... Needless to say we won't be returning.....

For pudding we ordered 1 cheese board (which you could of has as a main - LARGE, they will do you a doggie bag to take with you if you wish) 1 sticky toffee pudding, 1 chocolate fudge & 1 lemon cheesecake. Had a meal with friends and chose our two- course options about 6 weeks in advance, informing them one is coeliac and requesting a gluten-free carvery meal. They assured us this would be fine. On arrival checked they could do the gluten-free carvery (one hour later) and were told the chef would be informed. It turned out the gluten-free meal was just the carvery minus the interesting bits ie meat and veg. They did eventually bring some gravy to the table but we were simply told they “obviously didn’t have gluten-free Yorkshire puds / stuffing/ pigs n blankets... there was no response when they were told Tesco, m and s , Sainsbury’s etc have. It really wouldn’t be hard d to provide a full dinner - with 6 weeks notice-! - but hey you’d have to care about your customers to do that. No additional veg / discount offered. Not impressed.

I'll get the strange bit out the way first. You go up to the counter and then youre asked which meat you would like and they carve it for you. You're then asked if you want Yorkie and stuffing, mash, roast, peas, carrots cabbage, gravy. Then you take it back to your table and eat. Personally, I would have liked an extra Yorkie, more roasties, less mash and swede and the gravy not all over the Yorkie which made it all soggy. The only choice on how much you get was with the Horseradish sauce! As a first timer, I was unsure of the experience and I will know more next time. The service is excellent, the staff are friendly, the place is spotless and the food is delicious. To follow I had the salted caramel cookie dough with ice cream, served in a very hot cast iron waffle pan, looked really impressive, and tasted mmmmmmm.Good selection of beers, including their own which they brew on the premises. They also offer accommodation in a section of cottages at the rear of the pub. It's a lovely place, overlooking fields, has a big car park, and not too far from A42/M42.

I visited with my mum, my 3 and 1 year old boys for the lunch club offer. Food was very nice and it's all served up for you in the carvery. I have visited before and the portion size was bigger I think I only had about 4 carrots served to me today. My issue and the reason for the 2* rating was the 2 pudding choices I personally didn't like so I asked if I was possible to get a scoop of ice cream instead... the lady I asked said that's not available in the lunch club offer. I asked to speak to a manager about this. A different lady then came over and asked what the issue was I explained that I didn't like the pudding choices and would like a scoop of ice cream instead she said that wouldn't be possible and I would have to pay for the ice cream if that's what I wanted and I would be charged for the carvery at £8.25 instead of the offer of £7.95 and the additional cost of the ice cream! I was explaining that surely the pudding would be more expensive that 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream she didn't like this and asked me why I was shouting ( I wasn't shouting I was just stating the facts) anyway I said ok I will have custard with no spotted dick in the bowl! She then was very rude to us compared to the other customers in there. It definitely wasn't handled correctly there end and instead of just having a happy customer she was just following what I can only describe as the "lunch club offer rule book"!!!!! Such a shame as this place is local to me and the carvery is nice but how petty they made this definitely puts me off returning again!

Great staff, lovely building, good atmosphere, beautiful setting. And the food was incredible BUT we ordered three sandwiches and waited over 1 hour for them. The food and staff were good enough to gloss over this fact but if you're tying it in with say, a visit to Charnwood Alpacas you will need to leave enough time as we ended up being late. I had the cod goujon sandwich and the batter was really light and dry; incredible as were the cheesy chips we ordered; proper chunky chips with strong mature cheddar. Yum! Recommended.

Having been given the task of choosing a lunch venue for our party of 4 in an area to the north-west of Leicester on Monday 20 March, I was delighted to find the Trip Advisor listing for the Tap House Bar & Restaurant at Smisby, offering a Carvery Lunch between 12:00 noon and 2:30 p.m. daily. Looking forward to “quality service, food and an atmosphere that will keep you coming back” we arrived within the appointed time, but were told that not only was the Carvery unavailable but that no food of any type could be offered due to “a deep clean being carried out” and there being no chef on duty.Whilst recognising the need for routine maintenance, what a pity that the planning did not extend to informing prospective customers by means of the website.(Thankfully, the Beeches is less than 1 mile away. They extended a warm welcome and provided a Carvery Meal with a special Monday offer of a free starter or dessert)

Plates full of delicious home cooked food. Glasses full of home brewed beer. Three customers on a business lunch enjoying a very nice and unbusiness like meal. This place does not do posh, but it does do excellent full plates of scrumptious. If more pubs served food like this I would get fatter than I already am.Lovely service today for lunch - in and out in reasonable time and well catered for along the way by attentive and personable staff.I really could not ask for anything more at this price point - Well done.

This bar/restaurant is simply divine. Every meal excels itself with a variety to suit all tastes. Pie night is delicious and mighty reasonable too. The carvery is very generous and all homemade including yorkshire puddings... The bar has a wide range of ales due to it's own attached brewery so worth a try. Nothing is ever too much trouble and the staff are incredibly friendly and attentive.

Arrived after the dinner time rush and the carvery looked like it was all over but as I asked for the main menu they brought out a joint of beef and was going to top up on the veg. We were asked if we wanted any new potatoes or chips, which we would have to wait for, but they were waited for. My friend wanted the steak and ale pie with the freshly cooked chips and peas with gravy. My cousin and I had the beef. We were carved 4 big slices. The veg was lovely and we shared our new potatoes. We all had a pudding my friend asked for ice cream which isn't on the menu and she was given a good dish full. I have the key lime pie and my cousin had the same. Could have licked the plate clean! Everything was delicious and the staff were very friendly and gave great customer service.Definitely a return visit is required.

My wife and i visited the Tap House for a spur of the moment Sunday dinner, we hadn't booked in advance and fortunately we were lucky enough to get a table. When we asked if a table was available we were shown to a table pretty quickly even though the place was pretty full. We were asked what drinks we wanted and then told that when we were ready we could go up to the carvery and get served. The guys who were serving the carvery were very polite and very helpful as were all of the staff there. After choosing what we wanted i have to say the food looked really good and i have to say it tasted as good as it looked. You could tell it was all freshly cooked food and good quality produce. All in all i would have to say as a last minute decision and for the price i would definately recommend the Tap House for a good quality Sunday dinner, the only thing i would say though is that even though we got lucky with a table being available i would definately phone ahead and make a reservation the next time and i would advise anyone planning to visit there on a Sunday to do the same just in case as i can tell it is a very popular place for people to visit.

The Tap House is halfway between our family in Hampshire and us in Yorkshire. We met for Sunday lunch. Long way to go but it was worth it. The carvery was really good . Carveries tend not to be great for vegetarians but they supplied vege gravy for the vegetarian in the group - this was a surprise but thoughtful. Staff were welcoming and professional. A busy place but well organised. Will use it again.

The Tap House has to be one of the best reasonably priced, consistently good quality, eating establishments in the Derbyshire area. If you haven't discovered it yet... then you have a lot to look forward to. We have visited many times and always found friendly, helpful staff and excellent food, reasonably priced wine, not to mention the beer!! Whether you eat from the carvery or menu, I am sure you will not be disappointed. Give it a try.

We regularly visit The Tap House and usually it's for a carvery. It is by far the best carvery we've had and that's why we always go there now. The food is freshly cooked and locally sourced, no frozen roasties or yorkies to be found here. Staff are friendly, helpful and attentive. Gluten free gravy available on request, just order when you go to your table. Excellent selection of drinks and of course the beer is brewed on site! Lovely puddings available too and the Salted Caramel Cookie Dough hot dessert is to die for. They also do takeaway carvery too.

Without any expectation, my wife and I along with our 8 year old pulled in for an evening meal. There were just 2 blokes sat at the bar as well as ourselves. OK I thought, it's early, it will pick up. It didn't really but in a way I'm glad it didn't. At 6pm on the dot, we sat at a table. At 6.01pm we had menus and drinks offered. At 6.05pm we had drinks in hand. Felt sorry for the menu as one look at the carvery did it for us. What a plate full ! Quality beef, pork and chicken, loads of veg, massive yorkshires and a gravy so addictive they could sell it on the streets! Dessert (not that we needed one) was equally as indulgent. A melt in the mouth chocolate pud and a cookie dough special still in the hot pan were just tops. The two lads (Niall plus one, sorry didn't get his name) serving were friendly, knowledgable and enthusiastic. Well worth a visit, honestly. There was a sign on the wall to the effect of "No parties of 9+ on a Sunday after 2.30pm" I can understand why with such good honest food at a very reasonable price. I imagine it's crazy Sunday afternoons but if you time it right, you won't go wrong.

I went there for carvery lunch. The food was excellent but it was spoiled a bit by slow service and barely warm plates. This resulted in food that should have been hotter. It was ok but I felt I needed to eat quickly in order to get it before it went cold. We eventually cleared out own table after 15 minutes looking at our empty plates and no-one came to ask if everything was ok, just a detail but one that shows they actually give a toss. It's just poor staff training that could easily be put right just like having to wait at the bar for almost 5mins to get coffee before anyone asked if I was being attended to. As I say, the food was very good but hot plates are essential, and allowing self service at the veg station would speed things up.

We stopped here for a quick lunch on our way through Ashby. The pub looked clean and welcoming. We gave our drinks order which the young girl behind the bar got wrong. Once seated we had to wait 10 minutes to give our food order. We only had sandwiches, burgers and baguettes but we had to wait between 30-45 minutes for our food. When our food did come, it came in dribs and drabs having to wait for our side orders and chips. I was not sure what the delay was as there was only 2 other occupied tables. The food was average, slightly bland and the burgers were quite charred! I believe the carvery does well but I think the rest of the food and service needs attention.

I can only review the bar as I didn't eat at the Tap House on this occasion, but understand the Sunday Carvery to be the best around ! The beer is kept to a very high standard, the bar is very clean and the staff polite and helpful. Quiet TV in the corner set to a News channel keeps you in touch with outside world whilst looking out over the fields in the middle of a farming community. Try the Tap House Gold... an extremely hoppy, fresh ale, brewed just a few feet away on the other side of the car park. Excellent !

The Tap was recommended by a friend who had celebrated her birthday here and I'm glad to say we were not disappointed. Met with a smile and a greeting of welcome by the young lad behind the bar. The carvery looked inviting and tasted even better. Pork was succulent and full of taste, crackling was spot on, in fact I would go as far to say it was scrumptious! Vegetables were all fresh (no frozen produce here other than the garden peas). Serving staff were friendly and helpful, waitresses whilst being attentive but not intrusive asking if everything was OK with the meal showed attention to detail. All in all it finished off what has been a very memorable week celebrating my 70th birthday. Needless to say we will be back next Sunday!

Several people in our lunch group had the carvery option. A good variety of fresh, hot vegetables to go with the homecooked pie and roasts. Everyone praised the meals, whether carvery or menu options. We will certainly put this on our list of places to eat. Good value at a good price.Only constructive criticism was the design of the cups for coffee or tea. The handles were very small and I was unable to put my finger through the microscopic hole and hold the cup properly. The coffee was lovely and hot and so therefore was the cup and handle. I say this as at a previous establishment my friend had a mug of hot chocolate with a similar design of handle. She was unable to hold it properly and spilt the full mug of hot chocolate all over her and the seating. A possible health and safety issue.

We went to the tap house on 3rd October for a spur of the moment celebratory meal as i had just accepted a new job offer. We didn't fancy the carvery so we opted for the al a carte menu. Which we were told there would be a 40 minute wait for this. Seemed a bit excessive as the restaurant wasn't that busy but decided to order and asked for some crusty bread and butter to eat whilst we were waiting. It took around 30 minutes for the bread to come out which the waitress apologised for and gave us a little extra. It then took another 30 minutes until the waitress came over and told us that the chef was just plating our meals and they would just be 1 minute. Another 10 minutes and our daughter finally got her mushroom risotto. Another 5 minutes and my husband and I received our haddock risotto. We were supposed to have a poached egg on top so i mentioned this to the waitress and she took our plates back into the kitchen only to be bought straight back out and be told the chef has advised that he would have to wait for the water to boil and it would take too long. I have eaten smoked haddock risotto quite a few times but this is the worst I've ever had. The fish was abysmal. I do not expect to go to a restaurant and be served a piece of fish that you wouldn't even consider buying yourself at the local supermarket. Smoked haddock risotto with poached egg, parmesan and lemon oil??? No egg, no parmesan and no lemon oil. Just half a bag of rocket leaves covering a tasteless risotto with a balsamic drizzle. We complained to the waitress who was very apologetic and informed us that they had been left in the lurch and it was a new chef. She offered us free deserts, which we declined but she did take the 2 risottos off the bill, which I wouldn't have paid for anyway. And also the mushroom risotto was the same as our risotto with just a few mushrooms stirred through, so not even a proper mushroom risotto. We were thinking of going to the pie night but unfortunately we'll never go back to this restaurant again. Lovely waitress though, stayed calm even though she looked stressed.

I usually meet up with my brother and a mate for a chat once a month or so and we try to vary our meeting places. This time he chose the Tap House from a book on good food at Pubs. I do not know the name of the book, but if this standard is maintained I shall get my own copy. I am giving the benefit of doubt with service as when we entered there was only one person serving and they were half way through plating up a table of 7 or 8. After 5 minutes or so we were served and shown our table. The eating area is fairly large and towards the back of the pub. They have an extensive menu, however we all opted fr the carvery with a beef pie - other meats were available. At £8.95 it is quite expensive for a carvery, you are not allowed to help yourself to veg, or go for a second helping, having said that the plates are big and the portions plentiful, so I doubt many would be able to have a second helping!!The food was superb. Well presented and tasted so fresh, not a hint of tinned or processed food anywhere. We all agreed that the pie had been prepared and cooked to the highest standard and the mashed potatoes and veg succulent. The roast potatoes were not as good as my mum used to make, but tbh that might just be my memory playing tricks. It is a little off the beaten track (which is great as some may not find this treasure) but well worth searching out. Over a 100 mile round trip for me, so will not be going every week, but this one will be revisited before Xmas, and that is a promise.

We had been advised by a friend to check out this eating house/pub/ brewery and I have to say we were not disappointed. We chose to go on a Saturday night, not realising that they were hosting a Beer Festival, to promote their own brewery, but luckily we had booked a table earlier in the day. We arrived to discover the Festival in full swing with outside bar and Live Music.... Very lively despite the rain. My husband being an avid Real Ale drinker was soon sampling the delights on offer at the outside bar. However as every available seat outside was 'taken', and I knew there was a table awaiting us 'inside'' I proposed that we go through to the Restaurant, which we did. Not unexpectantly, the Pub/Restaurant was just as busy inside, but once we had approached the bar and given our name to the very friendly waitress, we were immediately shown to our table. The place was bursting at the seams and there were three large parties already seated. Both my husband and I feared we would have a long wait. Not so, the very friendly waitress seemed to estimate how long it would take us to peruse the menu & make our choice, for just as we put the menus down on the table she was there to take our order. It was probably a good decision to have the Carvery, given that there were so many people all eagerly waiting for their dinner. As we were not having a 'Starter' we were told that we could go immediately to the Carvery, which we did, where we were served from a mouthwatering array of meats and vegetables. As Carvery's go I would give them 8 out of 10 (as I never award anyone top marks, this is a high score) Everything looked and tasted very fresh, not sad and tired as many Carvery's can be. My husband, being an out and out Carnivore, had to have the Beef and the Pork and remarked on the delicious flavour of both.....And the crackling really was! I had the turkey which was beautifully moist and flavoursome. Throughout our meal the staff were attentive, without being a nuisance, ensuring we were never without a drink, even going outside to bring my husband's chosen tiple from the Festival Bar and despite the 'Full House', appeared to satisfy the needs of all their diners. We applauded their friendly attention to detail and obvious pride in their work, carried out in what could have been difficult circumstances, given the large numbers both in and outside of this establishment. A very enjoyable experience and we will definitely be returning. Oh and the prices were very reasonable BTW.
