The Tailend Restaurant and Fish Bar in Fife

I thought this restaurant was overpriced but didn't realize until later that they had added a £6.69 gratuity!!!

This restaurant must be one of the best for Fish & Chips in St AndrewsOur fish (Haddock ) was one of the best we’d ever tasted it was cooked to perfection and was so fresh the chips & mushy peas were superb we were served by Amy ProvanShe really did go the extra mile to ensure everything was perfect for us she cleaned our table so throughly we felt really safe the restaurant was spotless & she was so friendly and attentive it made our day I can’t recommend this restaurant highly enough

A very busy Saturday night service but queue managed quickly and effectively. Great fish and chips - much better than other outlets we’ve been to locally.

Excellent fish and chips in a limited menu. Service was a bit distracted, maybe because the place was very full. We didn’t drink but there seem to be a wide array of beers and cocktails to choose from.

Why not cook the food a little faster? Most of the queue are looking for a fish supper so think ahead. I queued for 35 minutes while you managed half a dozen orders. There are too many staff doing hee-haw behind that counter. Invest in something more than a scrap of paper to control the orders and get employees who can think for themselves. I'm not coming back until you fix things.

Booked a table in the restaurant for 6.00pm. slow service and slow delivery of food. We seemed to be second in line to the punters on the street. Pity that the service and ambience of the restaurant did not match the fish and chips, which were the best. Disappointing that a seafood restaurant had a limited selection of seafood. Overall, somewhat disappointing.

First time here and the food was first class, my Arbroath Smokie was first class as was my parents Haddock fish and chips, would highly recommend this place and I will be back in the future.

We loved it here - the food was spectacular - so spectacular that we came back the next day for more. The service was absolutely spot on - friendly and attentive but not smothering and every dish ordered arrived at its peak of perfection.

The premises looked nice and the staff kindly gave us a table without having a booking. The noise! created from the chat of other customers was deafening and we all said it was difficult to hear. Order in and the food arrived.Not what I expected from a fish & chip restaurant. The menu is not the same as the takeaway menu. However, the food was nice but sadly over priced for what I had. Grandson took a chip and he was crying as it was far too hot. I’d recommend leaving a child’s meal to cool down a lot before even serving itI would say nice but not worth the money. Travel south to Anstruther and get a proper fish & chips in the restaurant

Had dinner with a friend during recent visit to St Andrews and highly recommend Tailend. I had the king prawn starter and grilled salmon main, my friend had fish and chips. Both were excellent, and because I had Arbroath smokies on past trips to Scotland, I ordered one here. I have to say that if you enjoy smoked fish the Arbroath smoky is hard to beat. The food was excellent and the service was fast and efficient.Highly recommended.

We like to try to eat here whenever we visit St Andrews as the food is so good. Really high quality fish cooked in modern and deliciously varied ways. This time we needed 2 high chairs for kids in our party and the staff were so accommodating; moving us to the back room when we requested so we could have a bit more space. They also brought colouring in for the kids and were really attentive during our visit despite the restaurant being busy. The music was a bit loud too and they turned it down for us so we could chat. Thank you to the staff for looking after us so well.It’s a must-go recommendation from us; try to book beforehand as it is a popular venue!

10 of us for a family occasion whilst on holiday. Fantastic food from fish and chips to plaice and Thai curry. Service lovely & friendly and super helpful with especial thanks to Mark and team for being so accommodating. All good you'll never be disappointed. All restaurants should be like this

My family loved the haddock and scampi. Chips were lovely. The service was efficient and the food wasn't overpriced. There was a bit of a queue but that's to be expected. I would recommended.

Having read various reviews we had to try Tailend during our stay in St Andrews and boy did it live up to expectations. If you are thinking of going I would recommend booking for peak time (we did) as it was busy, but you can wait for a table or get takeout if you don’t have a booking and there isn’t a table free. The staff were really friendly and helpful, they all appeared to enjoy working together which I always think creates a great atmosphere. We had scallops, monkfish skewers, battered - prawns, halibut and hake and a fish burger, oh and onion rings. Suffice we say we were all very full! The batter really is crispy and delicious and you could taste how fresh the fish is. The mushy peas and chips were yummy too. 100% recommend to anyone who loves fresh fish in a relaxed and comfy atmosphere.

Fish and chips, and other fish dishes are good, but overpriced. Basic, canteen style decor. Service was fine.

What an amazing time we all had at the Tailend on Saturday 7th August 2021. We were a group of 13 celebrating a special birthday and from the moment we arrived we were treated to wonderful service by Mark who really went above and beyond to make our evening as special as it possibly could be . The food was outstanding, brilliant cocktails , wine and gin mixers and even a cake and singing of Happy Birthday to the birthday girl . Seriously can't recommend highly enough.

Popped in for a quick lunch accompanied by a hangry teenager and was pleasantly surprised by the layout and menu options. Lots of delicious fresh fish and really, really good chips in a casual environment. Will return.

I visited earlier today and had fish and chips and calamari. I was unimpressed.Fish and chips was okay, I’ve had better; it was expensive, too.The calamari was bad. The batter was soaked in oil, and it overwhelmed the flavourThe space was noisy, and it didn’t make for a good experience. I won’t return there

Dine in or take away There is no other chippy's in the area or nationally that comes close to the quality of The Tail End ! Our Favourite is Haddock and chips but we have tried most of the offerings and loved all of them .

Went and stopped by here today after reading the good reviews however we where sadly disappointed after realising you had to book prior to attending we decided we would get a takeaway a fish supper and jumbo sausage supper the portions where terrible a small handful of chips with burnt soggy sausages, for the price your paying you definitely expect higher standards. Would definitely avoid going here again.

Don’t expect a fancy restaurant as it’s not. This is the charm! It’s a popular fully functioning posh fish and chips shop with onsite restaurant. It’s busy , noisy but serves the freshest fish and chips you can get. Good range on the menu and the Arbroath Smokie was delicious. Good value and would definitely visit again .

Had a great meal with partner and mum. Highlights were the scallops and the awsome Arbroath smokie. All food was great, hot and beautifully presented by friendly staff. Top Marks.

The service and food here has always been amazing. Myself and my partner always tend to get a take away but this time decided to sit in... we were shocked that the portion size is completely different (we were both given the horrible small ends of the chips) and the fish was smaller... we also had to ask for the tartar sauce which normally comes with it. For £14 EACH.. I expected better. This won’t be stopping us from going but just something which shocked us.

Enjoyable meal. Good service & excellent choice of specials. Had the Tuna which was good. Pity no draught lager. Sells freah fish at counter. Friendly staff.

Booked the place to have some fresh fish and wasn't disappointed. Fish & chip bar out front but a nice basic restaurant out back. Fish was great. Halibut and Monkfish for me and the wife with some nice source. Chips great and the girls servi g very good and quick with order.Great place

Really fantastic fish and chip restaurant and takeaway. Amazing selection of fish and seafood offered breaded, battered or grilled. The list is too huge to mention but includes, lobster, monk fish and langoustines along with all the regular family favourites you’d expect to see! Everything cooked fresh a new to order. What more could you expect? Oh and we were served by the charming and charismatic Mark, what an asset to the business. Fabulous!

Lovely food served with a smile. Prawn starter was excellent. All fresh good quality produce. Very much enjoyed our meal. Had side order of bread an d butter so had the luxury of a wee chip price. Yum yum ,,, 😋😋😋😋😋😋

We’ve eaten here before on previous trips to St Andrews and always been happy but yesterday’s experience was poor. Chips were still good but the batter on the fish was soggy and barely cooked. Disappointing.

Some weeks prior to visiting St Andrews on a short stay I booked a table, via the web site. This was easy to do and proved to be both very reliable and a good thing to do - it proved to be very busy. The food - grilled haddock with lemon butter was very very good as was the table service. All staff were very polite and were adhering to COVID guidance. Today (Mon) as we passed the door of the shop we thought we would check to see if we could possibly book for a meal this evening. Unfortunately, it must have been an off day for the male member of staff behind the counter because I am sure he didn’t mean to be so rude. I will return for the food and I will book on line

First time we have eaten out in 14 months and decided to head to St Andrews. We ate in the restaurant and the staff adhered to all COVID Guidelines which was reassuring. The food was delicious and the staff were lovely and friendly. Well done Tailend! We will be back.

We had a lovely fish and chips takeaway. Not expensive and social distance was adhered to. The takeaway is not far from No 1 apartments

Good takeaway which our family enjoyed. Chicken tempura and chips and cheese were particularly popular. Chips were not too oily which was good.

Visited the Tailend on 30th April the first time we had been to a restaurant since the last lockdown. We were not disappointed the food and service was fabulous and I can’t praise it enough. We have been lucky to have Tailend ready meals during lockdown and I hope they continue with these as they are such amazing value and fantastic quality. Will definitely be back again soon and will still be ordering the ready meals and fresh fish too!

We had the best fish suppers collected from the tailend in Market Street. Ordered online saved us from a long wait. The staff do seem to care about getting it right. We'll be back.

Food is ok but service is awful. Click and collect order said there was a 90 minute lead in time when I placed the order and they gave me a time to collect so I was there at my allotted time. Someone comes up behind me orders and gets her food within 10 minutes. I had to wait 30 minutes and then the order was wrong Absolute shambles.

The fish quality is excellent.I go frequently and I only have two critisms.1. They’re online menu and click/collect doesn’t make it clear when you can by the raw plain fish2. Although the fillets are good, they vary in portion and the skin removal is not very neat

Fantastic, I ordered a festive hamper for my in laws. This was delivered to Edinburgh just before Christmas. Perfect deliver, wonderful contents in hamper and great delivery deliver. Will definitely be ordering in the future, well worth the cost. The recipients were over the moon with the hamper, and the chowder is fantastic

1st time eating out since March and 1st visit to the Tailend. Service from start to finish was fantastic! It was clear that the team took the health and safety of everyone as a priority. Great value for money and hopefully will be back when we can be

This is this first time I have been to tail end I thought the atmosphere was brilliant and a beautiful place I really enjoyed my bartered fish and my son really enjoyed his I would come back again once this virus is over with with my family have a great Christmas stay safe and look after each other

I visited here as it was on my own but had had 2 small haddock and chips £10 so assumed not that dear.i ordered 1 small haddock and chips and small latte.coffee was served first and was quite cool.10 mins later fish and chips came.it was the smallest fish I've ever seen,3 bites it was gone I was charged £12.90,I would have been cheaper ordering the 2 for a tenner and leaving what I couldn't eat.shame on you tail-end.take my advice it wasn't good so don't eat here.

Beware of buying vouchers for Xmas presents this year-I bought £70 last year for a Xmas present, but despite the restaurant being open, I have had to cancel 2 bookings as I am not allowed to use the vouchers, even though they are numbered and can be redeemed without touch?? Although the expiry date has been extended, there has been no information forthcoming as to when I will be able to redeem them if ever? Just beware of wasting you’re money.

Booked here and was impressed. Decor is nice and we as we're happy with the specials we had 2 1/2 suppers for £10. We found portions really big but still managed space for the sticky toffee pudding which was yummy. Would recommend

Have visited St Andrews a few times and never made it in here. It's always busy and the menu looks good. Eventually booked for an early dinner due to the covid opening times. I had the lemon sole special, done in butter and herbs. Absolutely delicious with really good and proper chippy chips and some fresh salad. Layout of cafe quite simple, modernish and minimal. Staff friendly. Once restrictions are lifted, would certainly visit again for another great meal with plenty more courses. If you are looking for a really good fish restaurant/takeaway or fish shop, stop by here. The choice is superb and everything is fresh, delicious with honest fuss free cooking.

We have been here several times over the last 4 years and Tailend is always a highlight on our visits to St Andrews. Very high quality cooking across a range of seafood choices. Fairly basic surroundings but you only come here for the fish.

We had a takeaway evening meal ( lockdown rules) It arrived hot and swiftly after ordering - very good quality overall.

The whole family enjoyed take away fish and chips from the Tailend in St Andrews. There was huge care taken over my gluten free fish supper order, right down to the vinegar being dispensed. Absolutely delicious and wouldn’t go anywhere else in St Andrews for a chippy!

We've eaten here twice in the last week. Food was delicious, freshly cooked and in my children's words 'anyone that can make peas taste good are amazing'. Today's visit was spoiled by the rude customer who was so rude when asked to wear a mask around the restaurant. I felt so sorry for the waitress, it was completely uncalled for. Great restaurant and great staff.

Lunch whilst in St Andrews on business - delicious fish supper! Excellent fresh fish, lovely batter and crispy, fluffy chips. Good service too. Still the best chip shop in town!

We had two fish suppers and a thai seafood curry. They all tasted great, the fish suppers are really nice, tasty batter, perfectly cooked fish. A good portion of nice chips too. The fish curry is full of different fish, salmon, scallops, prawns - very nice indeed. The mains were very good.We had three puddings and at £5+ seemed a bit pricey. The sticky toffee pudding was nice with ice cream, your standard kind of traditional pudding. The brownie was ok, but would have been better serviced warm with the nice cold ice cream. The cranachan Sunday was confusing, it missed all the textures of cranachan and was just a sunday with raspberry sauce and oats on top - would much prefer a cranachan or soemthing that allows the texture of cranachan fo come through. The service was quick and efficient, but perhaps lacking in warmth.Overal a nice meal and better than you would get in many places.

We only had take away but I would say best fish I've ever had. Chips could be slightly better but still really good. If in the area you must try next time we will have a sit in and let you know.

This chippy, right in the heart of St Andrew, has them queuing down the street. Those not queuing are eating for they queued for, if that makes sense.I have been here many times, and it never disappoints. The fish (and there is a decent assortment) is as fresh as daisies, batter is light and not greasy. Great chips, crispy with soft centres. No trip to St Andrews is complete without standing in the street eating Tailend fish and chips.

A worthwhile place to relax with food and escape the tourist trap that is St Andrews. The arbroath smokie i had was my first but if you like smoked fish I would heartily recommend. Portion are generous and you will be satisfied. Plenty of choice but not too much to overwhelm you. Extras all very good too and well catered for gluton free and allergies.

The family had lunch there- we tasted everythng from the mussels, battered fish and grilled hake. All were fantastic quality, the fish really tasty and well cooked, the chips were amazing too! Finished every morsel. And the coffee is pretty good also to finish off our meal.

We had a fish supper from here on a day trip to St Andrews and it was honestly one of the best fish suppers I've ever had.Batter and fish were perfect .Chips were great too but we had a lot of bits of chip crisps with no potato inside.Little tub of tartar sauce was £1.20 and I've had nicer tartar sauce for a lot cheaper but I would travel back to St Andrews for another fish supper from the tailend.

given covid restrictions we were well looked after by some great staff, the crispy battered tiger prawns starter were delightful and the haddock to follow was cooked perfectly, we had both battered and grilled, equally delicious with good chips and peas to the side

Andrews en ambas ocasiones nuestra comida era fabulosa, el pescado sabía tan fresco que ambos comimos atún la primera visita y en la segunda mi marido comió bacalao y yo comí limón, todos eran excelentes y sabían muy frescos. ¿El final de la cola acertamos con la limpieza y te hicimos sentir muy seguro?

Este maravilloso restaurante contribuyó a un hermoso día en la calle. Andrews. El pescado (muy fresco) y patatas fritas fue probablemente el mejor que he probado, mi esposa también disfrutó inmensamente de su pescado a la parrilla. Personal encantador y un bar de pescado muy acogedor cerca de la entrada. Definitivamente visitaría de nuevo.

Tanto es así que estuve muy enfermo un par de horas después de comer en este restaurante.Para un restaurante de mariscos no había muchos mariscos en el menú y mi esposo y yo realmente luchamos para elegir algo.Estaba muy decepcionado porque estaba muy emocionado de comer en este restaurante con todas las buenas críticas.Nunca volveré a comer en este restaurante.

Fantastic place, having had a flat in Edinburgh and been a regular at Tailend Leith Walk it was fantastic to find the St Andrews version to be equally superb.

We got a takeaway and took it to the beach. Really tasty fish and chips, and a generous portion in my opinion.

Hay algunas ofertas especiales, pero el simple abadejo y las patatas fritas es extremadamente bueno. Es bueno tener la opción de medias raciones. Servicio amigable.

Esperé mucho tiempo por mi comida. Mientras esperaba, entró una señora para devolver sus patatas fritas mientras se las entregaban. Mis patatas fritas venían dentro del tenedor tradicional y estaban demasiado cocidas. Más espeso que el chip. Perdí la trama, una vez un gran lugar para comer.

Just had a takeaway from here and we’re very disappointed. The fish and chips were very greasy and tasteless. Ordered regular portion and the fish was quite small. There seemed to be more batter than fish. The chips were more scrappy small bits than decent sized chips. One of the worst fish suppers I’ve ever had. Poor quality and expensive. Do not recommend at all.

Had a great meal here as well as a take away on another night as the chips were so good!! Fish was exceptional especially the prawns and scallops. Very busy restaurant - you need to book few days before.

Are here one evening as they were able to fit us in at short notice. Pleased we did. The fish dishes that we all had were good quality and it was a busy little place with a decent atmosphere.

Best take-away fish and chips I have had in many years. Still crisp and hot even after a walk back to the place we were staying - 4 adults and 3 kids all happy - and reasonably priced. Covid-secure operations working well - don’t let the lengthy queues put you off; it moved quickly and efficiently. Only downside is they have some specials which you only see once you are inside and have already ordered....will just have to go back

Great fish and chips at reasonable prices in this family friendly fish and chip restaurant. Good service and really good quality product made this an enjoyable meal. Very Covid aware and good social distancing was observed.

My family ate here our first night on holiday in St Andrews after hearing its reputation. However in our personal opinions we found that reputation to not entirely be deserved. This was SLIGHTLY better than your standard chippie food for not being quite as greasy, however for a place that trades in a seaside town the quality and taste of the fish was pretty standard stuff clearly not as fresh as it could be and should be in a place like this. I had the haggis supper which was okay- haggis wasn’t the spiciest or tastiest or best quality but was good enough chippie food- all the portions of chips we got were good quality although with an uneven ratio of actual big chips to little chips. To sum up, This place is fine if slightly overpriced. It markets itself more as a seafood oriented upmarket chippie which it isn’t particularly. Trades on its location and premise a bit.

Cela manquait de beurre (pour les français : ne vous attendez surtout pas à un beurre blanc).Mon ami a pris le "battered" haddock, qui était classique, sans plus.Les frites étaient également bonnes, sûrement des surgelées frites de nouveaux sur place.Enfin, pour 15£ par assiette, je pense qu'on peut s'attendre à une qualité supérieure.

Best chippy I’ve ever had. Had the fish supper and special fish supper. Chips weren’t greasy at all and everything was really tasty. Would definitely recommend.

We dined here very shortly after restaurants in Scotland opened after Covid lockdown.We were glad we’d booked as it’s clearly a very popular establishment, as demonstrated by the long queues for the takeaway!Everything was set up to ensure distancing and safety for customers, service was friendly and efficient and the food delicious.We’ll definitely return next time we visit St Andrews.

My partner and I went for takeaway during covid measures. Distanced queuing and max 5 people inside to collect food. They also send someone for your order and to take payment while you queue to keep things moving. Chips are cooked in palm oil (not beef dripping) so vegetarian but less eco than other vegetable oils. Food was very nice and would go again!

If the interior was a little smarter I would have given this place 5 stars.The food is excellent. Fresh fish and the chips really good.Service was fine and the interior ok.Good for a fun informal meal but not a special occasion. You have the option of grilled or breaded fish which was a nice change from the usual fried in batter. Liked it very much!!!Would definitely visit again as the food hit the spot

My partner went to pick us up a Tailend tonight, we were expecting a long wait because we’d seen the new queuing system etc down to Covid (rightly so).My partner was an hour in total waiting for the food (not complaining about that, these are unprecedented times), the order was taken about half an hour in as she stood in the queue. When she got to the till (an hour after she started queuing and half an hour after the order was taken) she was told they were out of haggis and that they’d put a black pudding in instead as it was “similar” and “the same price” my partner told the staff member that neither of us particularly liked black pudding and asked for an alternative, she was told that if she ordered an alternative then her order would go to the back of the queue. Not one to cause a scene, she paid and left.This restaurant has clearly got far too much custom to care about their customers any more, our family visits the Tailend many times a year and we were really taken aback by this, even more so when we read recent reviews and realised we weren’t alone. How terrible to have at least half an hour to give somebody an alternative option and just not bother. Maybe not as bad as the man six in front who got to the till to be told “no cash” to be turned away to return to his family who had been waiting outside for an hour, but bad enough. The food has dipped in standard too, very greasy and flavourless. Think the Tailend needs some tips from friendly Ayrshire chippies!!!And before anyone wades in with a brutal response, this isn’t aimed at anyone, it’s an honest review of the business.

We were looking forward to some lovely seafood but on arrival were advised that they are not currently doing any Specials of the day so had to settle for fish and chips, which was just ok, nothing special. Felt that the website could have highlighted the reduced menu options for we could have been made aware when booking.

Just had lovely meal. Both food and service excellent. Would definitely recommend. Managed the covid situation really well.

We’d booked somewhere for dinner whilst on a golf trip. I had teriyaki tuna salad followed by haddock and chips. Both were excellent and the fish was a generous size. Service was good and the staff very friendly. The menu is a bit limited at the moment due to having no specials with the restaurant having only just reopened. That didn’t detract from what was a most enjoyable evening.

The best fish and chips in town. Battered or breaded is a hard decision, both are amazing. After trying Tailend and Anstruther a few days apart, I think Tailend has the edge. Both are very good.

We visited their St. Andrews restaurant for my nieces 3rd birthday on 21/07/2020. We had booked a table for 9 people which was our first restaurant visit for us all to be together since COVID-19 started.We sat down at a nice table at the back of the restaurant which had a lovely glass roof and we had our order taken fairly quick as you would expect, When taking the order, 7 out of 9 people wanted a starter and one person in our group who didn’t have a stater needed to leave earlier than the rest of us so we asked if we could have his main course with our starters so he could leave, to which we got the reply “we can just bring everything out together” which is not what we had asked. We wanted our starters first and mains after with only 1 main course to come with the starters to which the waitress replied “ok, I understand now, that’s fine”45 minutes went by without having any food after ordering. When the food finally arrived the starters came out... followed by the mains all at the same time. We told another waitress that we had asked for starters together and then mains after so they took the other 8 main courses back and sat them on the pass which we could clearly see from our table. Half way through enjoying our starters the original waitress who took our order called Morvin came up to our table and said this... “I am going to have to bring you your main courses as they are on the pass and we don’t have enough room for all the plates to be sat there and they are going cold.” We replied saying “we did ask for them to come separately” “starters first then main courses after” to which the very rude waitress just said “I apologise It’s my fault as I didn’t write it on the order but I can either bring them now or bring them in 25 minutes for you when they are cold.” My jaw dropped to the floor and I couldn’t believe what she had said. Never had we been spoken to like this at a restaurant before. We were not even given the option to have them remade or kept warm while we ate our starters, we ended up letting them bring all the mains out and be at the side if us while we finished our starters so the mains were going cold anyway. We asked morvin to speak to a manager.The manager came up to our table mid way though our main courses and we explained the situation to her, she agreed that what Morvin had said was not right and offered us all free desserts, coffee and 10% off the bill which was very kind of her and it did make us enjoy it a lot more as many of us were not going to have desserts as it’s fairly expensive for fish and chips anyway.I wasn’t going to write a review at all following the managers actions in this instance but then I remembered how many people are sat at home without jobs due to COVID-19 who are very eager to get back to work and would bend over backwards for customers and then you have this young girl who could potentially be loosing this restaurant business after they have been closed for the best part of 3 months. It’s just not fair.
