Hmm. The Sun Inn used to be pretty reliable for good gastropub grub. Not sure what’s happened? Massively reduced menu, with above average prices, and a fairly limited menu for Sunday lunch. We had mussels (good), scallops from the specials menu (ok) and the Sunday roast which was a (big) bit disappointing. Pre-plated, just about lukewarm- and all a bit bland. The cauliflower cheese was actually room temperature. Like a pretty rubbish school dinner. The main part of the inn is ? being refurbished. The barn extension is utterly lacking in atmosphere. Service was ok, but not great. Not sure we’ll be back any time soon.

Booked not believing the reviews.. disappointed. Not sure if the place is trying to take on a new direction or has been chain bought, but it's certainly not the award winning gastro pub it was a few years ago. On arrival we were taken into an empty dining room and sat bang in the middle on the smallest table available. Within 10 minutes another couple were shown in and sat on the nearest table to us which was a 5 seater, the couple had 2 old dogs with them and whilst I have absolutely no problem with dogs, unfortunately they were a bit stinky and were constantly scratching and shaking their coats, which would probably send less dog friendly folk than us into a unpleasant situation. The menu is vastly reduced and disappointing from previous visits, and portions were not impressive for the price charged. It's like over priced basic pub grub. As it was a birthday meal I opted for cocktails, mojito and daqueri were faultless however a signature espresso martini was disappointing. Overall for 2 starters and mains, 2 lagers and 3 cocktails it was well over £100. Unfortunately we won't be back until the reviews get better. The sun inn...Please go back to what you done best a few years ago. Potential customers.. save your money try the dean tavern up the road.

Not a regular visitor to The Sun Inn, but my husband got a voucher for his birthday. After reading mixed reviews, I was sceptical however, we were not disappointed. The staff were very pleasant & the food delicious, starters were pate & 4 slices of toast & trio of fishcakes both delicious, for mains we both had the steak that was cooked to our request, dessert was sticky toffee pudding & cheesecake again delicious. If I had to be really picky some dining chairs needed recovering, but that's just wear & tear that should get addressed.

A touch disappointed on our recent visit as this was Sunday lunch fav for many years. The starters were very slow to arrive and very salty. The Sunday roast was OK without being it's usual standard. Staff were attentive but got the drinks and food order slightly wrong. Will give it a miss for a bit.

Been before and enjoyed the food very much with excellent service. This visit, not at all. The menu seemed limited this time. it took ages to have someone take our order and even longer for the food to arrive. Stew in a dish with a pastry lid, does not make a steak pie. At £19 they wanted another £5 for a vegetable! My fish and chips were tasteless and served with a substance purporting to be tartare sauce, which reeked of garlic? The soft drinks arrived with the young waiter carrying all the glasses in one hand, with his fingers inside the glasses. Our waitress had food spilled down the front of her apron and legs of her jeans. The tray bake was hard and dry. To add insult to injury, they added a service charge of more than £9 taking the final bill to over £100. Give it a miss!

Used to be one of the best places in Midlothian. Now it’s one of the worst. Went for Sunday lunch and the roast beef was basically a lump of gristle. Steak pie is not a pie. It’s a casserole disk with a lid. Not shortcrust pastry as the menu claimed. Was very expensive as well. The quality of food does not justify these prices. Service was ok but very robotic with no real warmth or friendliness. The Paper Mill, GiGis, the Corobation Inn and the Junioer Lee Inn are in a different league to the Sun Inn now. The setting is absolutely fantastic but it hasn’t got the quality food it used to have. Please fo better because it used be a brilluant place to go.

We are house hunting in the area and called in for lunch with our daughter who lives about 40 minutes drive from Newtongrange. We all thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of our lunch. We were warmly welcomed and the table supplied with menus and water immediately. The decor and atmosphere was really lovely and we felt very comfortable. Our daughter had the Wagyu burger, which she pronounced divine. My husband had the haddock and chips. He is notoriously picky and can be difficult to please, but he said his meal was first class. I had the open prawn sandwich, an enormous stack of large, juicy prawns on toasted sourdough, with Marie Rose sauce and tomatoes and lettuce. Absolutely gorgeous. We all enjoyed a half of “Bitter and Twisted” beer which was excellent. On paying the bill, my husband tried to leave a tip for the staff, but they were adamant that service charge was included and wouldn’t hear of him leaving extra. We’d all return in a heartbeat, and if we do have our offer on a nearby property accepted, we will count ourselves very lucky to have The Sun Inn as our local!

It has been a while since I went to the Sun Inn and used to love going there. I was so disappointed that standards have seemed to drop since I was last there. There were plenty of staff, but there were dirty tables in the extension, our own table was sticky, and one of the water glasses still had the remains of a past user lipstick. Service was okay, but with no real warmth that I used to expect. Food; Mussels - good Pate - didn't have and too late noticed it was still charged for Cauli fondue - good but unsure if it was supposed to be a cold dish Steak Pie - average Fish and chips - poor Steak - over cooked and over seasoned Desserts - average Good pub grub is based on value. This time, the value was not there. Shame as I used to like the place. Also, outside at back is bit of a mess - clean it up or close it off to customers

The food here is absolutely phenomenal. The staff were so accommodating for example I asked if my coconut monkfish curry could be made with more spice, and it came out with the most beautiful kick to it. The food was genuinely 5*. At first we thought the service was a little slow but as soon as we even tasted our starters we all agreed it surpassed expectations and was well worth the wait. The steaks were melt in the mouth, cooked to perfection, and the tomato kids pasta was stunning. My 4yo had wanted to meet the chef to say thanks for her pasta and he happily came out..nothing was too much trouble. Fine dining quality with a homely atmosphere.

For over 12 years, the Sun Inn has been our favorite restaurant in the Edinburgh area. The food was always something a wee bit special. Unfortunately, last nite was not the case. There’s been a significant change in the menu, and not for the better. My partner and I had the soup, which to be honest was good. However my Daughter had the crispy cauliflower which was a complete disaster. From then on it went downhill, two of us had the steak pie, Fray Bentos make better! I’ll stress that we had no issues with the waiting staff, and I felt guilty having to voice my concerns about our experience. We only had four alcoholic drinks, three starters, and three mains. The bill after deductions was still £129! In essence a complete disaster, and having read other recent reviews on here, there does seem to be “issues.” My partner and Daughter have always raved The Sun Inn, and I’m gutted having to write this review……..

I stayed the night here recently as I was attending a function with my Brass Band (The Newtongrange Silver Band) at The Dean Tavern, Newtongrange. I was allocated Room 1 which was huge and looks out onto the railway viaduct that the Waverley Line (Edinburgh to Carlisle) used until it was axed in 1969 by Dr Beeching and his report and is now used by the Borders Railway (Edinburgh to Galashiels/Tweedbank) opened in 2015. After the event and a very comfortable night's sleep, I went down for Breakfast quite early and the Staff were busy getting sorted and laying a large fire. I was provided with Fresh Orange Juice and Tea and I ordered a cooked breakfast of Bacon, Lorne Sausage, Tattie Scone, Tomato, Haggis, Black Pudding and a poached Egg which soon arrived. The whole breakfast was exceptional, special mention to whoever cooked it, and my Server Niamh who was pleasant, helpful and a credit to the establishment. It rates as one of the best cooked breakfasts that I've had over the years, and I must award it 10/10. If you are coming along the A7 near Newtongrange this place is excellent and pretty close to Edinburgh City Centre.

Warm and cosy but very smokey from the open fire. The fish and chips were unremarkable with the batter was very oily. As I cut it you could see the oil being squeezed out of the batter. The knickerbocker glory was far from glorious and at £9 it was over priced. Supposed to have fruit and a flake. A half strawberry on the top was the fruit offering and the flake was no where to be seen. Such a shame as I really enjoyed going there with friends but will now look elsewhere. It was expensive for what we got. 10% added to the bill.I prefer to tip my server personally.

The Sun has been very popular for quite some time and you can see why. Good traditional dishes, with lots of locally sourced produce. Good choices if you’re a seafood lover, or prefer something from the land. Vegan choices were a bit weird, not listed on the menu but they would do a vegan version of some mains if you asked. Better to be more explicit if you ask me. Decent price. Service was mixed, we had to chase once or twice.

We arrived for afternoon tea which was delicious and plenty of it. Soup, tomato and basil oil was lovely. Freshly made sandwiches, pork pies, sausage rolls and scotch eggs. Beautiful scones with clotted cream and jam. Brownies and Eton mess. We have all eaten here before and it has been good. The one thing that let this experience down was the cocktails. We were told there was no cocktail menu as they were waiting on them coming back from the printers but assured they could make anything. My daughter and I decided to have a mojito and a raspberry mojito. They were disgusting. I have never had a mojito made with peppermint cordial, no crushed mint or ice and no sugar syrup. Never have I tasted anything like it. After the young man bragging that he could make anything and they were not cheap. Even the mocktails were just pure sugar.

One of the worst meals, and worst dining experiences, I’ve ever had. We booked for our family and in-laws (2 families of 4, 2 adults, 2 kids) to have dinner for Mother’s Day. So many issues: - we weren’t told there was a set menu...

Itison 4 course tasting - don’t waste your money, tiny portions of bland food! Sun Inn should be embarrassed to serve this as a meal! Toasted bread with what appeared to be tinned chopped tomatoes with mixed herbs (this was best of the whole meal)...

Greeted by Surly McSurly. Took order, but never came. Had to ask again. Pity we did. The most idescribably awful, dense, dree-as-dust, indigestible scone in the Universe - not just the Solar System. Plus rather rancid coffee, fortunately rather little. Price was astronomical however. Feedback...

I don't understand the negative reviews. We were a Table of 3 using ITISON vouchers for a small fish n chips each last night and we were all delighted with our plates. Decent sized battered fish, chips (not wedges !), tartar sauce and 'mushy peas'...

When did fish and chips become fish and burnt potato wedges? Although on offer at £5 fish and chips should be fish and chips (unburnt)! The "chef" asked to look at my plate and returned it via the lovely waiter to explain the potatoes are...

We recently spent a night at this Inn on a bed, breakfast and evening meal basis. Our initial impression was poor. This is based on the fairly worn and dirty stairwell. The carpet in the room was seriously marked and worn. and generally needed updated....

I must say I am very confused by the large amount of low scoring reviews on here. We visited on 01/12, the restaurant was beautifully decorated and very clean. There was no staff to greet us at the door therefore we did have to speak...

I would like to see a reply from The Sun Inn management to this, and other reviews, which highlight the same issues. 1. Remove the service charge. The food and drinks are expensive, in my opinion, not value for money. To then have a service...

I volunteer here once a week but also go to the Wednesday community lunch where a set 3 course meal is served at 12.30. Open to all, you pay by donation but there is no obligation. Lentil soup with sourdough bread, vegetarian lasagne with garlic toast , coffee and chocolate hazelnut cake was yesterday's delicious meal. There's a friendly atmosphere and willing service. The Storehouse also supports several young vulnerable adults who help to serve and to clear tables - always with a smile. I feel really lucky and proud to have the Storehouse in my town. I hesitated to write this review because I volunteer in the shop but I am also a café customer.

There have been many changes since we last visited Whitmuir pre-pandemic. The farm food shop has gone and has been replaced by Junkshop Antiques (which used to operate from smaller premises on the site); The Dancing Light gallery apparently moved online some time ago and the vacant unit they previously occupied was due to be re-launched as a (Christmas) shop when we were there in November 2022. The café looks the same as before (minus the gallery’s paintings) but opened again under new ownership in September 2022 and now trades simply as Whitmuir Cafe. I’m glad to see the log burner remains in place as it is needed to try to keep this cavernous place warm at this time of year. Quercus Garden Plants still operate on the site however when we visited garden plants were not something we were looking to explore. At the time of our lunch visit there was a slow, steady flow of customers but these are large premises to fill so it lacked atmosphere. The menu choice is modest and we ordered up their Toastie of the Day, which was ham and cheese, served with house salad and dressing £6.95). My wife’s request to replace the sourdough bread with brown bread was met. I ordered a Bagel with chicken & lemon mayonnaise, also served with house salad and dressing (£6.25). We both enjoyed our lunch - the chicken was plentiful and tasty with the mayo, the toastie filling good quality and we both rated the house salad and dressing very highly. The only criticism was that the cutlery knives seemed blunt. The coffee we had along with the food was very good - Flat white (£2.95) and Americano (£2.60) - so we ordered another to go along with the home bakes both of which happened to be gluten free. My wife requested the smaller of the large looking slices of Treacle and Lemon tart on display, which turned out to be wise since she was unable to finish it; and I had an Almond slice which I too was unable to finish. Verdict on the cakes was “okay” however we have only rarely found a gluten free cake which we could say we really enjoyed so that is probably just our taste. Overall cost of lunch was just over £29 which we thought was good value. Staff were friendly and efficient. It’s early days for the revised format and not as attractive an overall destination for us however we wish them well. Check opening hours if travelling - seems to be Wednesday to Sunday, 10.00am until 4.00pm at present.

Inexplicably just stopped being a restaurant. Can't find anything about it online. Open but for what purpose I don't know. Now the guests at the associated premier inn next door have nowhere to eat. We were regulars and it was great to have somewhere affordable and reliable to get a meal. We are owed an explanation.

Worst experience we have encountered. shabby establishment. Dirty tables and floor. Standard of food the lowest we have encountered ever. Carvery very limited and quite frankly disgusting.
