The Sun Inn in Richmond upon Thames

Unfortunately me and my partner got food poising at this pub! I had a diarrhoea after the lunch (burger and halloumi fries) and my partner was feeling bloated and sick for the rest of the evening and night and couldn't sleep at all! (he had roast chicken and squid) We regret going there spontaneously without reading the reviews first!

Visited the The Sun Inn for afternoon drinks we a friend and was met with great customer service and good value for money. Plenty of seating both inside and outside, the ambience is chill and the interior decor is awesome. If you want to feel like your at the pub from kingsmen but at an affordable rate at a town near you then look no further than this place.

One of my favourite SW London pubs. Food is great, and the setting in Barnes opposite the green is very nice.Have eaten here a few times and must say that the food has been excellent and the service also. Definitely one worth checking out, eating no the front in the sun on Saturday afternoon was lovely.

The pub was busy but the new system - order via phone/app is so quickly and easy to use. Drinks came literally within 5 minutes after putting the order through. Lovely evening out . All the staff were friendly and chatty which is always nice. Can’t say the same about the manager who dismissed us at the beginning when we asked to go outside, his reply was “ just drinks yeah” , it was 8.30pm and We weren’t sure if we wanted to eat or just drinks so the 3 of us asked a waiter what time the kitchen was closing. He said 9pm so we didn’t want to be the annoying ones at the last minute and only had drinks. But needless to say, that was forgotten when we started talking to the waiter, lovely chap, he was entertaining everyone.

The Sun Inn never fails to impress but on this occasion following the ease of lockdown restrictions had certainly exceeded our expectations with well equipped pet friendly garden terrace, efficient and curteous staff and great variety of dishes bursting with flavour.

Good beer let down by poor food - burnt yet soggy truffle roast potatoes - black with no potato inside - when we complained we were told they were 'red potatoes' and supposed to be like this! How the kitchen can send out food like this is dismal - the managers attempt to say 'nothing is wrong' is worse. Avoid.

Really nice chicken caesar salad & primavera risotto - both very well done. Shared a few bar bites before which were also very good & reasonable priced for the portions. Nice wine list & sensible provisions on the Covid front. Liked it a lot.

Dos familias, nueve personas en total, se reunieron en Sun Inn para el almuerzo del domingo. El pub es espacioso y está bien equipado (¡muy diferente de cuando entré por primera vez en 1960!). Una buena variedad de cervezas y muchos vinos. La comida, que teníamos porciones de carne de res, cordero y pollo entre los nueve, era excelente. Un montón de (el pollo era masivo!) Sunday lunch at The Sun Inn was excellent! The food was amazing, I had roast chicken, he had roast beef. We were a little disappointed that there was no more lamb to be had but that will teach us to book early! The staff were very apologetic, friendly and cared that we enjoyed our meals by serving them up at the exact time we asked. Well done Sun Inn staff!

We are local and there are lots of good pubs to choose from but The Sun never disappoints. Good atmosphere, friendly service and very delicious food. We all had a different main course - roast lamb, roast chicken, fish and chips and salmon - and they were all great. Excellent.

We booked a table for 7 at 2 pm on a Sunday, only to be told after 15 minutes that there were no Sunday roasts available, just the usual pub fare of sausage and mash, fish and chips, burger etc.For a pub which prides itself on Sunday roasts this is unacceptable. We would not have booked the table, had we been aware of this situation.

I hadn’t been to the Sun inn for a year or so but having congregated at the newly refurbished Red Lion and then had an excellent lunch at Church Road restaurant we all somehow ended up in the Sun. The first thing I noticed was how shabby it felt in comparison to the Red Lion. We ordered a few bottles of wine and continued our party. After an hour or so at about 6, with the pub pretty empty I went to buy another drink and was told, by a classic “escaped from Shoreditch” assistant manager that my group was being refused any further drinks. We were happy and probably loud but the place was dead, as it deserves to be with decisions like this! No explanation was given. One guest had left and in collecting a coat spilled a glass of wine. If I was the manager I’d ask if I could replace the wine and make some friends. Not this guy. Most of our party were Barnes stalwarts which made it an even worse decision. Anyway, we progressed to the Coach and Horses where the staff were very friendly. It’s not quite as fresh as the Red Lion but clearly sits above the Sun Inn in the Barnes pecking order. When I layer this experience on my memories from my last visit to the Sun Inn, for dinner, which are of mediocre food and overpriced at that, I won’t be going back any time soon. It was a unanimously held view at the end of a great day. If you want to have fun you won’t be appreciated here!

First time visit and there’s no doubt we will return. This a lovely old traditional pub serving wonderful food. All of the staff were friendly and welcoming with just the right amount of attentiveness.We went for the sharing lunch of Cote de Boeuf for two with all the usual trimmings. It was perfectly cooked with wonderful accompaniments. Big thank you to everyone.

Visited The Sun Inn with a group of friends for a drink and some food. The team was friendly and helpful in recommending us drinks from a big range of draught beers, we also saw a good wine list and lots of spirits behind the bar. We ordered food and sat in the front area of the pub for our meals which was very cosy! Food arrived in good time and was delicious, fish and chips good and crispy and nice options for my vegetarian friends as well! Moved outside after our food to the back garden which was sheltered with heaters and fairy lights! Great place will definitely come back soon, thank you!!

Having recently relocated to Barnes with hubby and two kids I discovered the Sun inn, a cozy and relaxed pub, family friendly and also very reasonable prices. My new home from Home in Barnes .

Really lovely pub overseeing Barnes pond. The wine list and food menu is very inspiring, all well presented. The staff friendly and charming.

Visited today with my parents and my two year old son. We sat at a table that we thought was free (table next to it had a reserved marker on it). Went to the bar ordered food, told him where we were sitting, no probs. Food arrives, pretty average but fine, half was through eating the waitress heads over to abruptly inform us that the whole area that we’re sat in is reserved and that we’ll have to move but they’ll help us move...after some discussion as to why the table wasn’t marked and do we really need move our two year old who’s happily eating away (answer apparently yes) we spot somewhere else, zero help from the staff to move. After managing to shift parents, toddler and buggy manager heads over to ask if we’d like a free desert - no thanks mate - what an incredibly poor show. Making matters worse the people who’d reserved the area arrived after we’d finished. Shame, prime spot pub is by far the worst in Barnes - AVOID, AVOID, AVOID!

One gin and tonic £9.70!!! Bloody expensive!! Staff are efficient and friendly. Nice atmosphere. But too pricey.

Right in the middle of Barnes opposite the pond. A lovely pub, traditional inside with good service and a good selection of food. A good regular for us.

Nos encanta el Sun Inn para un domingo asado. Pollo, cordero y ternera todo genial: verduras asadas, verduras, col roja, enormes pudines de Yorkshire, jarra de salsa, todo de primera categoría. Went to the Sun for lunch today. One of our party has severe food allergy. The staff were extremely helpful and attentive - even replaced one of the meals because we were concerned it contained an allergen. Excellent service and congratulations for taking allergy responsibilities seriously. Food excellent too!

We love this gem of a pub, perfect and generous roast dinners with real British flavours and seasonal updates to their menu. Pictured is the amazing Sharing Roast Beef and single Roast Chicken with full roasted veggies (parsnips, carrots, red cabbage, and potatoes) that made my family very happy. Followed up with teas and a lovely zesty lemon tart the perfect Sunday lunch.

Great location in the centre of Barnes. A very old inn with a quaint interior. Good food and drink. Great service and staff.

We stopped by for a Sunday roast. Very lively athmosphere, service was fast and friendy. We had beef roast at around £17 each. Although we git served a yorkshire pudding, good potatoes, vegetable and tasty gravy, our 2 beef slices were very thin and small.

We had lunch and both enjoyed it. We had the seared tuna and fish and chips, all was very good. There is a great choice of draught beer. Staff very welcoming too. We will definitely come back.

Stopped in for a quick lunch, went up to the bar, ordered a couple of pints, then went and sat at a table to have a read through of the menu to see what we fancied, noticed a great lunchtime sandwich special, choose a sandwich and a pint of Camden’s Hell for just £9.50. We both thought perfect as we’d just got the Camden’s Hell so pay the extra to have the sandwich, but no, the tills won’t allow them to add the sandwiches and take the difference, we would either have to have sandwich and another pint or pay £8.00 for just the sandwich, although there were no actually individual prices on the menu. We tried to explain that most people would order a drink first, go to a table have a read of the menu, decide what to eat, go to the bar and order, also there were no menus on the bar, so the first anyone would know about the special is once they’ve got a drink and sat down. Nope nothing he could do, the tills wouldn’t allow him, so we ask for the manager, he comes and we explain the logic to him, but no still couldn’t do the offer unless we bought another pint with the sandwich as tills won’t allow it. I cannot believe the pub has never had to issue a refund for incorrect or bad food before, or that the tills did not have a refund button? As we suggested why not offer a refund on the pints they’d already given to us and then ring them through again with the sandwich deal, then the problem would be they’d have to put down a reason why they had to give refund, simple, customers were unaware of specials offer when first arrived. So instead of making a little bit of effort and making happy two customers, they’ve left the two of us not wanting to go back and disgusted at customer service. I hasten to add the pub was hardly busy. May have only been a couple of sandwiches, but shouldn’t really matter, we won’t go back and now forced to write a negative review on here, where other people may think twice about going.

Nice enough staff but several items including the famed 21 day aged sirloin steak weren't available. This was on a quiet Tuesday evening. The steaks we were offered instead were tough as old boots and inedible (we saved them for the dog). The "balsamic & tomato tarte tatin on rocket salad" had overdone the balsamic and had too much rocket. Horrible. Does anyone really like that stuff? The tuna main had to be taken away and warmed. The menu also differed substantially from that advertised. If you have low expectations then you won't be disappointed at the Sun.

My wife and I - together with 2 visiting family members - had lunch today at the well-known Sun Inn which occupies a prime position overlooking Barnes Pond.It was not overly busy and we found ourselves an excellent table in one of the alcoves - which effectively gave us our own private dining area. We were promptly served by a most welcoming waitress. The menu itself was an interesting one with a good range of choices but - as we found out later - it would have been good to have also been briefed about the 'Daily Specials' on offer!No matter - and although not all our party agreed - I enjoyed both my Butterscotch soup and the Atlantic Cod. I do, however, think it would have been good to have seen a few more scallops on the starter option.Service throughout the meal was very good and the menu was certainly competitively priced. Well worth a visit by anyone passing through Barnes where good pubs are becoming increasingly hard to find!

The pub itself is nice and characterful with a good choice of gins but I'm not sure I would return for the food. Mine was underseasoned and didn't really taste of much. The seared tuna was ok but very small amount of fish in relation to the beans, tomatoes and olives which were too much and quite tedious to eat after a while. The others had the roast beef which they seemed to enjoy and the portions were huge.As others have mentioned, there was a smell of chlorine/bleach when the door leading outside past the men's toilet opened!

Having not been here for several months we came back to the Sun for a Friday night out with some friends. It was a lovely evening and thankfully we were able to sit outside. Although relatively low key, the food was delicious, good value and served quickly despite an enormously busy pub. Will definitely be back soon

Dropped in for a weekday lunch. Liked the venue, staff were helpful, but unfortunately the fish and chips tasted like frozen thawed out fried fish! Not very nice at all.

The Sun Inn is a lovely little pup right in the heart of Barnes just a minute away from the main highstreet and just down the road from The Olympic cinema, more shops and the Wetlands.Just opposite the pub is Barnes Pond. You can sit outside this pub on a summers day and enjoy the wildlife.

Great team behind the bar. Large selection of drinks for all tastes and the food is excellent too with the menu changing regularly. The atmosphere is laid back and the layout is intimate yet spacious. There is seating outside in front of the pub where you can watch the people go by and look over at Barnes Pond, plus plenty of seating out the back. IMNHO this is the best of the local pubs/restaurants.

It wasn't very busy compared to some other pubs in Riverside suburbs. Can't u derstand why as the food and service we're very good.

A bit surprised to see some muddling reviews here. I've been in every couple of months and always find it friendly, knowledgable staff and good food. Suitably informal and maybe a bit tired....I like pubs to be eclectic and more vintage than brand new out of the theme pub catalogue.

I have visited twice recently for Sunday lunch and on both occasions it was disappointing. On the first visit the lamb was good and the beef was very tough. The second visit with a friend and partner, all the food was below par, chicken, beef and lamb all tough or overcooked. The only reason I returned the second time was all the other pubs in the area were very busy. I would not bother to go for food on a third occasion. Nice for a drink on a sunny day though.

I've always loved The Sun Inn. Perched on the idyllic location of Barnes Pond - it has a unique English country village vibe - but its in London. The beer is good, the staff are lovely the food is Ok.There's just one problem - it smells of drains. It didn't used to smell of drains but for the last two years they have drain issues. And everyone I know who dines there agrees. People are calling it The Drain Inn.The Mgmt are clearly aware of this because they've tried to mask the stink with cleaning products. So on top of the drain vibe it has that over-sanitised Monday morning school smell too. And this rather kills the eating and drinking experience. If it's a warm day and you're outside in the sunshine with a pint of ale in hand it's truly one of the greatest pubs south of the river. If you're going to be indoors take a clothes peg. (Unless you like the smell of drains)

What a shame such a wonderful pub has been let down by poor service, bad food and a foul smell. The location of the pub is perfect, but they seem not to make an effort to make it nice in there. I had been in about 6 months before and the same smell of bleach was there but i thought it was a one off clean. however when i went back the smell was still there. this pub could be a winner if someone actually cared about it.

Tired pub in need of a refurb. Unpleasant smell, cold and expensive. Didn't eat so can't comment on the food. Won't be returning in a hurry.

Go in for a pint, food or just a coffee and catch up with friends. If this was in the country it would be called the village hub.It is a very busy place with limited space outside, so head there early when the sun shines!Food is good pub food classics, with Battered Fish & Chips and the Burger or Steaks of note.Good ale served by friendly staff who are always busy, so don't expect them to chat.

Whilst having a lovely river walk on a sunny afternoon my friends and I decided to meet in the Sun for Sunday lunch. We had no reservation and the pub was rather busy however, the staff were very welcoming and attentive, they quickly found a table for us. I can honestly say we all had a fantastic time, staff were always on hand to ensure we had everything we needed. The roast dinners were superb, I even got extra crackling which I cheekily asked for and, my friends dog got his own bowl of treats and water so he wasn't left out, thank you!Gorgeous pub, warm welcome, great ambience, food and drinks superb. Staff wonderful.Will be back very soon.

Had booked 10 for late Sunday lunch at 5 o'clock .Those requiring the Sunday roast had to reserve a roast in advance 6 had done this .I had reserved a Roast Beef Sunday Roast .....bad choice ....better suited to shoe leather comes to mind . Meal was changed by waiter but second effort was equally tough .Very disappointed as cooking Roast Beef is not an art , the quality of the joint is paramount .Can easily say it was probably the worst Roast Beef dinner I had ever had .....still charged for it !!!!!!!

Came in at 12.30 for Sunday lunch with the family. We had two chicken roasts and the kids had fish and chips. We weren't expecting table service but the staff were amazingly accommodating and gave us full service for drinks and food. The roasts were excellent and the children were very happy too. I can't praise the staff enough for the excellent service they delivered , as well as offering good advice on the wines! Really great visit , will be booking again for next Sunday !

What a disappointment. I wouldn't normally write a negative review but I have been so moved by the behaviour I feel compelled to share our experience.We booked lunch for 12.30 our party consisted of 4 adults, 2 x under 6 and a 9 month toddler. We were handed the lunch time menu but when we ordered, we learnt they had already run out of children's food. When i asked if the chef could cook pasta without the meat balls for the children but they said no as all the food is prepared in advance.When asked for the children's food to be ordered first they said no. Although the children wanted pasta the only food available was the Sunday roast which we ordered but they didn't eat. We waited for just over an hour and strangely received only half of the ingredients expected on the dish. On the whole the service was less than poor. after two hours they hadn't removed our plates, we had requested the desert menu twice and had only been served drinks once when taking our seats. In the end we gave up and queued and paid at the bar. 'Im a single parent and keeping two young children entertained for two hours is difficult enough. I'm sad to say as an old local I won't be returning anytime soon. N

We'd booked a table for a 5.30pm dinner. Turned up to find no table reserved in our name (as they said they weren't busy), so they showed us to the free tables at the back of the pub, near the Kitchen and ever banging Staff Exit door. How to make you feel a valued customer - NOT! Ordered 2 pork roasts and a roast Duck special. Post ordering staff came back and said only 1 portion of pork left/available. Friend changed their order to chicken, but wish I'd done the same and left the pork alone - it was dry and hard. (Possibly because it was kept warm after the lunch service and dried out?). It only softened with gravy, and had to ask if there was any apple sauce (no, just jelly). Duck dish looked very uninspiring and served with strange shredded potato bits - for £16 it was very over-priced. Bar-staff tried hard but very inexperienced - didn't know the name of the beer ordered (London Pride) and confused the rest of the drinks order. Will I be going back? No. There's plenty of other eateries in Barnes to enjoy better food and service than here. Sad because we've been in the past and had good food and much better dining experiences.

Great atmosphere,very tasty pan-fried prawns chorizo,delicious burger and big range of beers and ciders!!

Nice hot burger, tasty cheese and big portion of fresh crispy fries with cold beer - it is just perfect !! Something you can not miss when you around.

Great food, professionally managed, friendly staff and music on point. Perfect atmosphere for any occasion.

My last review of this pub – a favourite for me – criticized the food offering. Sadly, I have to repeat my criticism. We visited again in mid-January for lunch. Scotch egg, one of the better dishes, was out of stock, so I risked the scallops (again). I was presented with a plate of perhaps three (or two?) minute scallops, the remainder of the plate being covered with pieces of cauliflower (which I initially thought were scallops). They were grossly overcooked and cold. I paid over GBP8.00 for this plate – a complete disgrace. I suggest this item be removed from the menu if the chef is unable to cook them properly. In mitigation, my friend's chicken wings looked rather good.My other comment is the shortage of serving staff. With two sides to the bar, one invariably has to wait for some time to get any service. On this occasion, I simply went behind the bar and helped myself to wine glasses. I didn't have the nerve to pour myself a beer or glass of wine, which I could probably have got away with, given the staff situation!

Just couldn't ask for a better day spent with friends. The Sun Inn is very cosy and welcoming. I think I can speak for my friends group as we really felt a warm atmosphere. It was like an extension of our own house. The staff made sure that we were part of the "family". Even thought we weren't planning to have dinner we stayed until the very last minute.Planning the next visit. Thanks a lot :)

If you don't mind waiting for ever to be served and don't mind your roast chicken tasting of some weird 'smoked' taste that was vaguely reminiscent of the disinfectant smell in the toilets then you could possibly do worse than The Sun.

Great drinks. Good food. Wonderful and friendly management and staff. Great for a drink, a meal or a big event.
