The Straw Bear B&B in Fenland

We booked three rooms for a one night stay, a double and two singles, and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful and welcoming. We needed a very early breakfast and it was no issue for the cook to come in early to ensure our breakfast was ready for 7.45 instead of the normal 8.30. Our rooms were very clean and comfortable and our evening meal lovely. Such a great menu. Fantastic value

Booked for me by my work, I always give 5 stars: Generally a good stay but on the morning of my stay there was not any staff available to the business in order to provide breakfast. Although marketed as a B&B you do have to pay extra for breakfast and book in advance. The bedding and towels were a bit tired but it was a reasonably clean room. Important context: My experience was a 1 night stay and does not represent this establishment in it's entirety. No-one in hospitality sets out to provide a poor experience. Anyone can have an off day.

Fantastic Sunday lunch and service

Overnight stay en route to a funeral nearby. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Room was clean but very small. En-suite was tiny with the smallest sink I’ve ever seen. Lovely big mirror but no socket within reach for a hairdryer or straighteners. This is definitely a pub with rooms which is inexpensive.. There was a staff shortage, however, they arranged for someone, who was also friendly and welcoming, to come in to organise breakfast but it was deep fried and unappetising. We appreciated being able to remain on the premises beyond the checkout time. The staff we met are an asset.

The roast dinners were over cooked. Others had other meals and they were ok

I had an amazing dinner the other night served by an especially sweet and nice young boy who I believe is called Jack. He made sure everything with my meal was all right and could NOT ask for better service

A good lunch at a decent price. Had to wait a while but it was worth waiting for. Staff very pleasant. So would go back again.

Nice friendly staff food disappointing had the Sunday lunch. Meat dry parsnips hard would not go again on Sundays, will try the week day menu it might be better when the food is cooked to order

Great team at The Strawbear. Good menu and specials. Pub has Air Con in summer Pétanque for the local league every Tuesday April to September.

The room was comfortable and clean but a little cold at night. We were in the converted garage but the facilities were very good and clean. Food and Drink was lovely and service was friendly and good.

Cracking Sunday lunch here! They also do take away Sunday roast if you don't want to eat in. Prices good and staff friendly. Plenty of parking. Update Jan 2023 Just wanted to add about breakfast. Been a couple of times lately and to be honest it knocks every other place in Whittlesey into touch! Not only is the food good quality, cooked fresh and amount great, the prices are fantastic. £8 for full English with 2 sausage, 2 bacon, 3 hash browns, beans, tomatoes, egg, mushrooms and toast. Plus unlimited tea and coffee. You won't be disappointed.

Great food great service cnt wait to go back again

Had mixed grill asked for salad instead of chips. They brought it out with chips (I don't eat chips) sent it back. I asked for steak to be medium rare it came out well done. The wife's meal was very bland. No one came over and asked us if the meal was OK. When we paid we said about the issues they just said we will tell the owners. We certainly won't be going back. The lady at the bar did not apologise or even seem bothered!

Carvery is not always hot after being under the lamps for a time

No atmosphere, not helpful bar staff. Unkempt outside. The place was clean, especially the toilet. There was nothing to make me want to go back. It has great potential.

We booked a table today for Sunday lunch have never been before. But unfortunately my husband was ill today and I have recently had an operation on my hand so unable to do much. So when I phoned to cancel mentioning our troubles the lovely lady said she would deliver me a dinner. It was so good of her and I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner, so many thanks.

Nice pub, relaxed atmosphere and greate food

Great location for us, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful providing you don’t visit when university students are working part time there as they have no idea what to do which is not their fault as they obviously are given no training. Anyway, Good beers lagers and wine as well as super food at good prices can’t fault that at all It would be nicer if you didn’t have to look into the ladies toilet while you were eating as the door is always open, but that’s just a niggle and would never put me off going there (unless someone came out with their dress tucked into their pants).

Very good food, good serve and staff

I’ve been staying a couple of weeks and all the staff have been without exception so welcoming and the owners great making my stay comfortable. The food is great and the rooms spotless and so confortable. I’m staying here coming from Australia seeing my sick Mum and this is British hospitality at its best. I had to change my plans at short notice a few times and they have been so accomodating thank you.

Best breakfast in Whittlesey by far!!! They use quality ingredients. Staff are always lovely and polite, never feel rushed even when we are chatting away, and they want to close (sorry) won't go for breakfast anywhere else in Whittlesey now!!!

First time just went for a quick drink haven't tried the food yet but peoe say it's nice....if anything it's abit open not very cosy but nice and vlean with nice staff

We ate here last night. The tables were all reserved using cute personalised wooden signs for each couple. The meal was 2 courses for £15 & add a bottle of wine for £10. We chose steak for our main course which was cooked to perfection. The portion sizes were the same as normal regardless of the £15 deal . Service was quick and all in all a fab night. Definitely recommend.

Went in for a quick lunch as having to be somewhere, food was tasty and staff really helpful in allowing us to make the appointment. Would happily go back again atmosphere and service was good

Nice pub. Basic but very neat and tidy rooms. Really helpful and friendly staff. Stayed overnight and they really couldnt do enough for us. Brilliant. Will definitely use again when visiting my friends in Peterborough.

Had a lunchtime meal last Monday and the staff and food was faultless. Learned they do a ‘Real East End’ Pie & Mash on Friday’s & Saturday’s so booked a meal for last night - I’m originally born in St Andrews Hospital, Bow We’ll we couldn’t fault it and looking at other non pie and mash meals they all looked great Suggest you book if you want to be sure of a table Faultless food and service. A 5 Star rating from me 👍😊

I ate here for the carvery which was delicious and value for money as a great varierty offered. This pub was different as not only did it have the usual pub expectations but it had unusually differences such as a great range of flavoured ciders and the best homemade cheesecake I've ever tasted. The pub also had plenty of seating and a large wall mounted TV for the sports etc. All the staff were friendly and helpful.

Shame the locals need better why as you have a problem with drugys as when I was out side had a problem with two of them in short what go's on out side of your pub you are part of shame when this pub open it was a very nice one as time go's by and a few owners things start to silp and in no time at all you are looking a ruff area ruff pub bad name all in all not good and then the end pub gone building ruined by vandells a mess not good for the town or the area or the population who live there shame but it's going that way clean it up now or louse it

I booked a stop over and stayed at the Straw Bear. The welcome was great. So friendly with lots of advice on where to eat as the pub wasn't serving food that night. Took a 10 minute stroll into town and found a really great curry house. Wandered back and went to my lovely room... super clean, cosy and comfortable. Also amazing value compared to the A1 national chains. Breakfast was lovely and again super friendly. Good coffee too. I will visit again because this little gem happens in just the right place in the middle of nowhere! Thank you for a great stay.

Good Local Pub, accommodation seems very popular. Wide range of Beers and Ciders. Fantastic artwork in memory our Soldiers Sailors and Airman on wall outside, Lest we forget

Stayed here whilst working in Peterborough. We arrived early and the staff member was lovely. She asked if we could wait 30 minutes for the rooms to be sorted so we went to the shop. When we came back the rooms we’re ready. We stayed in the annex and the room was great. Very clean, comfy beds and a great shower. Would stay here again next time we’re in Peterborough. The only down side is it’s a bit out of the way and ideally need a vehicle to get to the shops etc.

We have stayed at the Straw Bear before and, again it did not disappoint. The rooms are clean, the shower is to die for and the beds are super comfy. Breakfast is available but you need to pre book. Staff are really friendly and the lager was cold and tasty.

Lovely clean rooms, a shower to die for and beds you will sleep well on. We had drinks in the bar after our event, Kyle was busy ensuring all surfaces including tables and chairs were sanitised and safe for further customers but always on hand to make sure we were served in an appropriate time. We have stayed here twice before and will definitely stay here again.

No food service until prompted and then sandwiches and crisps were offered, despite it being advertised. Not great. Service was passable.

We were 11 guys going fishing Friday till Sunday. We all arrived and we’re made very welcome. We drank in the bar at our allotted tables with great service. Well done girls. Sadly the chef had gone into Covid isolation and due to circumstances beyond there control couldn’t get cover. The owner ordered a delivery of fish and chips to be brought in. I slept in one of the new rooms in the car park. Excellent quality and ultra clean. Recommend 100%

The big chains could learn a thing or two from this spot... Rooms were brilliant, en suit was immaculate, the shower was amazing. The whole place was very clean. The couple who run it are down to earth and very welcoming and easy to get on with. Fantastic place all round.

I've been stopping at the straw bear since early September last year from 5 nights a week up to 14 nights a week before I go back home up north as I'm working down here. The bar staff as well as the chef are fabulous kind helpful people they are all good crack. The owners are tip top folk. The locals are all good banter make you welcome from day one. The food as brilliant as well as the beer. The rooms are very clean indeed. Can't fault it one bit

Go in here for a drink frequently, had the carvery once before.Staff are good, the place is clean.That's the basics over.The food, The meat is carved in front of you - in between service it is kept hot in a cabinet.Choice of beef, pork, gammon or chicken breast.All from a local butcher.Plus a vegetarian options. I prefer beef rare so it was a bit too well done for me, but the other two guests were fine with it and it's a buffet, so no problem at all. To be fair it was tasty.Big Yorkshire pudding, stuffing balls and crackling .Veg was plentiful, cauliflower cheese, roast potatoes (crispy and yummy), roast parsnips (wow), broccoli, swede/ carrot.Gravy, apple sauce, horseradish etc.All was lovely, freshly cooked (not micro pinged).A very enjoyable meal at a sensible price.

We have had the Sunday carvery in this local pub. Number of times and there was three adults and a six year old for this visit - The staff are superb taking you to your table in a nice light restaurant you can have a tiered priced lunch ranging from child’s size to large (which is large) - it is a typical carvery but the meat quality sourced from a local butchers is superb and well cooked - coupled with all the trimmings you want and need - it’s great value superb service and of the highest quality!!! Pub has good parking and free WiFi and also shows sky sports - really strongly recommend
